IBook Shuts Down at Gray Apple

I have a 12" iBook 700, 384mb RAM, panther. Everything fine on it, except the DC in jack is non-functional. I've been charging the battery externally and that's worked great until yesterday.
So, here's what happens:
• I hit POWER
• iBook powers up, I hear all the drives etc
• I see the gray apple for Approximately 5 seconds
• The iBook shuts down.
It actually reminds me of trying to boot with a dead battery (which mine is not)
Here's what I've tried:
Reset PRAM
Reset PMU (many many times, varying lengths)
Booting from OSX CD (OS 9, 10.2, 10.3)
Booting from FW hard drive
Pulled extra ram.
Swapped in alternate ram
All of these result in the shut down after 5 seconds.
If I boot with OPTION held I can see the available drives and let it sit like that till the cows come home. No shut down.
If I boot into Target Disk mode, it mounts and acts perfectly on the other mac.
BUT, if I boot with an OS 9 CD it gets all the way past the OS 9 screen before shut down, like 20-45 seconds.
And if I boot with an NON Mac OS (Ubuntu, or YD linux) it works just fine, no shut down. So I don't think it's the Logic Board, right?
I'm confused. Could this still be tied to the DC board? Maybe it's getting a signal that it has no battery power somehow? I tried disconnecting the board from the Logic board completely, but problem persists. Could just having the board missing cause this? I ordered a replacement for a minimal amount, just in case.
What else could it be? Could the MB ram have gone bad or something?
It doesn't seem to fit the motherboard video problem that used to be so popular. Any ideas?

I only just came across this thread, so I'm too late to the party to be of any help, I think.
But I've noted - on a variety of Macs from G3 PowerBooks onwards - that if a battery is too deeply discharged it may tell the system (..but I don't know which bit of the system; obviously a bit of system software..) that it cannot be charged. At that point the system closes down.
The DC input may also be notified that the battery is "unchargeable", and therefore some software control appears to fail to charge it.
It often happens - or has happened to me - that if the problem battery is put in a different Mac it may accept a bit of charge, at which point the "won't work" signal is revoked, and it will work OK in its usual device.
I've sometimes applied a charge directly to a recalcitrant battery from a desktop variable low voltage power supply (..you know: those boxes with knobs and an ammeter and voltmeter on the front..)
..and that's "kickstarted" the battery enough for it then to behave properly again.
Er, sorry not to have replied sooner..

  • IBook shuts down without warning with 3rd party battery.

Can you iBook G4 folks with battery savvy please check out my iBook G3 question:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1743983&tstart=0
To summarize, my brand new 3rd party battery causes the battery icon to go red after 3.5 hours run time with 1 hour left (23%). The iBook shuts down with 13 minutes left (4%) but doesn't get to 10 minutes so no warning message.
The distributor said some G4 iBook owners also reported the same strange behaviour.
Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone else experienced this? Yes I reset the PMU - no difference.
    Mrs H

All the literature from Nu Power says I should get the warning - it's just that the battery shuts down before it gets to 10 minutes left when the warning SHOULD (they say) appear. Another conversation with the techies confirms that the message should appear.
I have recalibrated it thrice, each time it runs a little closer to the 10 minute mark for time left. I'll keep trying.
Trouble is we are leaving for a trip very shortly and don't have time to return this 2nd Nu Power and try for another brand.
I get about 5 hours of run time when trying to discharge the battery fully as quickly as possible by having screen at its brightest, while running iTunes with visualizer on and receiving a radio broadcast.
How much time do you get on your new Apple battery? (on a G4?) We are going places where we will be without electricity for a day or so and the long charge and run time are our prime necessities.
    Thanks for your reply,

My girlfriends Macbook Pro shuts down at the Apple Logo....
    1)I start the computer
2)It loads to the apple logo
3)A progress bar shows and loads about 5% then it dissappears and a few seconds later the macbook pro shuts down.
    Any solutions?
If not, is there any way for me to reinstall the os without losing any files such as(any of her pictures, music, etc)?

    Hi S,
See if you can run Repair Disk: Boot frominstall disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key andkeep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screenselect the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in themenu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the leftside> click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’thappen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directoryis damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damagedHD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HDitself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, andrestart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > DiskUtility and run Repair Permissions.

  • My iMac G5 1.6 Ghz Won't Boot. Shuts Down at Gray Screen. HELP!

Hi guys. I need some help. I have an iMac G5 that seems to be having some serious problems. It is a 17" 1.6 Ghz w/ 1GB of RAM.
    The problem:
    • When I press the power button, I get the beautiful Mac chime, and the LCD turns on to the gray apple screen. I get the spinning gray bars below the apple, and then...it shuts down. Sometimes it doesn't even make it to the gray screen and it shuts down.
    What I have done recently/tried.
    • I installed iLife '06 and all the updates a day or two before this began.
    • I reset the PRAM.
    • I tried booting in safe-mode...no luck.
    • I tried starting from the factory CD. The drive begins to spin, and then it shuts down.
When this first happened (yesterday), I started it in safe-mode, and everything looked ok. I zapped the PRAM, and then started it up, and once again, everything looked ok. That was last night. When I got home from work tonight, none of those things worked, and I am now looking for some help from you guys. Any suggestions? Thanks, in advance, for the help.
BTW, I think I'm running 10.4, but I'm not certain because I can't start it up to tell.

See if your machine falls under the parameters of power supply or video and power issues.
Please post back and let us know,

  • Mac OS X Leopard - iBook shuts down at 20% with no warning

Since I installed Leopard, my iBook's battery lasts for only 1 hour, compared to the 2 hours (or more) it used to last using Tiger. As if It wasn't enough, it shuts down with no warning at 20%, losing date & time settings and wireless networks passwords. Does anyone know what's causing the problem? Is Apple planing to solve it? Thanks

  • IBook shuts down after upgrading from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9

Hi...I tried upgrading an old iBook G3 700 MHz from OS X 10.3.3 to 10.3.9 (combo). Now it won't finish
starting up. I press power, I do hear the chime and get to the point where the first screen with
the simple apple logo shows, but then after 5 seconds it shuts down again. I do hear the disk
    going briefly during this time.
I booted with the hardware diagnostics CD that came with the machine, and all tests passed OK
    - both the quick tests and the extended tests.
Wanted to just try reinstalling from the Panther CD set that I have, but I've found that I can't
boot from those CDs - does the same thing, shows the apple logo, then shuts down after 5 seconds.
I tried restarting in single user mode, it doesn't seem to get very far - I get the black screen, it
prints about 5 lines of information, then one line saying "Using 983 buffer headers..." and then
it shuts down. Seems like it's not getting far at all into the boot process.
Any thought's on what to try next? Wish I could just reinstall, wiping the slate clean, but even
    that doesn't work!
Thanks in advance for any help...
    - Bruce

    Success! This is so bizarre...
I have two Mac laptops, the iBook 700 MHz that's having the problem, and a newer
PowerBook G4. A few days ago I wanted to recharge the iBook...I've been very diligent
up to this point to use the correct charger with each laptop, the one that each came
    with.
I got lazy this last time...plugged the charger for the newer PowerBook into the
older iBook. Then I did the upgrade, and then I shut down the machine. It was after
that that I had problems restarting.
I got suspicious just now and looked at each charger. Thought they would be
interchangeable, but on looking at them the charger for the older iBook says output
is 24v 1.875A, while the one for the PowerBook is 24v 2.65A.
Knowing that there's a PMU (Power Management Unit) in these machines and that it
has settable parameters, I thought, what the heck, plug the correct charger back into
the iBook, just to see what happens. Voila, it started up OK!!!
    What the heck ?!?!
I'm pretty well versed in computers (work with Unix and Linux regularly, love the
Mac OS X command line!), just don't understand everything that goes on under the
hood with the Macs these days.
Just to get some final closure on this problem, can anyone explain why doing what
I did resolved the issue? I'd really like to learn from my mistakes.
Thanks to Rhonda and S.U. who responded so quickly for my plea for help!

  • IBook shuts down unexpectedly

    This just started yesterday....
The iBook just shut itself down without warning like the battery had died or power disconneted.
I could not power up w/o the ac adaptor.
The date/time was 1969 so I reset the PMU or believe I did. I started up and disconnected the ac adaptor and about 30 seconds after the computer shut down.
When I touch the battery power button, all the lights are green and the ac adapotor light is also green which I take to mean the battery had a full charge.
Am I not resetting the PMU correctly.. I followed the instructions from Apple.
This is also a new(er) battery which I bought a year ago.
    Any thoughts?
    John

Instructions for resetting the PMU can be found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Yours is likely the Late 2001 model, necessitating using the physical reset button to reset the PMU.
The green light on the adapter only means that the battery is not charging. When things are working properly, this means that it is fully charged. But that is not necessarily the case when things aren't working right.
With the four lights showing on the battery, it does seem that the battery is charged, however. What does the battery status indicator say about the battery's charge status?
There is a chance that there is a problem with the logic board if the adapter and battery are not the problem.

  • 800Mhz g3 12" ibook  shuts down and won't restart

I have a 12" ibook that started shutting down on its own then that stopped but now at random i'll shut it down and it won't restart. I reset the PMU with no change. If i let it sit for about a week or two it will turn back on and run fine for a while again. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check?
    Thanks

It is not unusual for an iBook with the known _logic board problem_ to start up from time to time, but not reliably.
It sounds as though that is probably the problem.
After leaving it sit overnight, does squeezing the case to the left of the trackpad allow you to start up and work for a bit as long as you keep the pressure on it there? If so, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.
    John Sawyer
    CJS Macintosh Repair
Instructions for removing the lower case:
    iFixit.com
If the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT&T Services in Fremont, California offers one of the cheapest repairs I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner alone can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
If you can afford it, the money may be better spent by putting it toward a new (or used) MacBook. I really love mine. It is a spectacular upgrade over the iBook G3, provided that you don't need OS 9 for anything.
Good luck with whatever course of action you decide upon.

Every time I start my iMac G5, I hear the chime and then see the gray screen Apple with the spinning wheel, but then it shuts down, never making it to the blue screen and desktop.

  • Ibook shuts down after closing lid

So over the weekend my ibook g4 has shut down randomly after shutting the lid and going to sleep. When I open the lid the screen is black and nothing is happening. I cannot turn it on from the power button until after taking the battery out and putting it back in. this has happened maybe 3 or 4 times in just a couple of days.
any ideas of what this could be and how to fix it?
    thank you

When you shut the lid on your laptop, what does the sleep light do? if it comes on and blinks then its sleeping, and not waking up properly. However, if it isnt coming on, its not sleeping, its just crashing. Sometimes, they just have issues with sleeping. I'm going to recomend that you try installing a program called sleepless. what sleepless does is well stop your computer from sleeping. I used it on my iBook because i had the same problem, Here this is sleepless now after you install you need to choose the "prevent sleep with lid closed" keep in mind that you need to be an administrator to do this function. Doing this when you are running programs can sometimes result in overheating, but usually nothing serous, as long as you don't have anything running, and it takes more battery power to do this. so if your on battery power you can still put it to sleep manually (in the apple menu) and close the lid.
