IBook Shuts Down When Try To Wake From Sleep

I have an iBook 300 that will work perfectly fine while you use it. When you put it to sleep, it sleeps normally, but when I try to wake it the sleep light goes out, nothing shows on screen, I can hear the hard drive spinning and then it shuts down. When I turn it back on, it works normally until I try to put it to sleep. Any idea what is wrong and how I could fix it? Thanks
iBook Clamshell 300   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

When you put it to sleep, it sleeps normally...
Is this by closing the lid? How about when you choose 'Sleep' from the menu and then close the lid? How about when just choosing 'Sleep' from the menu and waking it by pressing any key?
If the problems occur only with the lid then it may be a glitch in the lid mechanism ...if otherwise then it may be a system error. If you're running Tiger then it may be a little difficult to source any support for your ibook as Tiger is officially not to be run on it.
Maybe you can live with it the way it is?

  • My computer shuts down when I put it to sleep

Ever since I used some of those auto-download upgrades my Mac shuts down when I put it to sleep. What's wrong?

Hi gazebo, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

    Hi,
How do you wake up your computer, pressing FN? How long it takes to wake up from sleep?
I suspect that your computer unexpected shut down when you put it into Sleep.
Please run SFC /scan command to check if there is any error or corrupted files which may cause the issue.
Would you please also check if there is any minidump created after sleep?
To ensure minidumps are enabled, refer to the step “Configure the dump type” in following article:
How to read the small memory dump file that is created by Windows if a crash occurs

If there it is, please help to upload it here for our research.

  • When the mac wakes from sleep, the wireless icon disappears

Hi All, I have a third party wireless PCI card in the PowerMac G4 MDD which works fantastically. The only issue I have is when the machine wakes from sleep, the wireless icon disappears from the top menu and the machine freezes and I have to force shut down.....
    Any ideas?
    I am running 10.5.8....

    Hi, Garry -
It seems some PCI cards don't handle sleep well; sometimes they exhibit behavior such as you've noted, sometimes they just prevent the machine from entering sleep.
In many cases the solution can be to sleep only the monitor; in the Sleep prefs pane, set the sliders for System and Hard Drive to "never", and the one for the monitor to your choice of delay. This arrangement also means waking from sleep is faster.

  • Ibook shuts down when moved

When moving it will sometimes shut down when put down ever so gently. Any suggestions?

Hey chaz and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
When moving it will sometimes shut down when put down ever so gently
It would help to know exactly which iBook we're talking about here, speed and size.
In general, if you're only on battery power when this happens, I would check the battery lock they can get loose and need tightning. Dirt/corrosion there can also cause this symptom.
Also the battery interconnect board, Corey Arnold problem U28, possible short in the inverter cable.
Do some more diagnostics; move the display, leave it on with the display flat on the table an the lower section up, pull the power lead and try to disturb just the battery.
    Post back.

  • New Mac Pro shuts down when I put it to sleep?

I go to click my mouse of keyboard and nothing happens. I click the power button the back lights up and turns on as if it were off, what gives? This is brand new 64gb ram, 12 core, didn't even do a migration so it's all new stuff on here.

    Hello Chief Sneed,
It sounds like your computer is going to sleep but when you later go to wake it up it will not turn on unless you press the power button and it looks to have shutdown at some point. I recommend checking to see if the computer is scheduled to shutdown at a certain time with the following article:
OS X Mavericks: Schedule your Mac to shut down or go to sleep automatically
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13914
Schedule your Mac to turn on, turn off, go to sleep, or wake from sleep at specified times. You might do this if you want to be sure your Mac turns off when you aren’t working and turns on before you come to work.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Energy Saver.
Click Schedule, then select the options you want to use.
To schedule a startup or wake time for your Mac, select the “Start up or wake” checkbox. Choose a day or group of days from the pop-up menu, then enter a time.
To schedule a shutdown, sleep, or restart time for your Mac, select the bottom checkbox and choose the appropriate option from the pop-up menu. Choose a day or group of days from the pop-up menu, then enter a time.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Computer shuts down when it's supposed to sleep

My computer is set in power saver preferences for display to sleep after 30 minutes and computer to sleep after 1 hour. Since installing 10.4.3 and the java update, the computer shuts down instead of sleeping. In the morning I have to push the power button several times to get it to start up. Very annoying. Any ideas?

In Energy Saver preferences, click the Schedule button and make sure you didn't accidentally set the computer to shut down.
The power button is not normally used to wake a sleeping computer. All you have to do is move or click the mouse, or press a button on the keyboard. My guess is that your computer is not shut down. I bet it's sleeping and you just don't know how to tell.
Most modern Macs have a small light on the front. If the light is off, the computer is shut down. If the light is pulsing, the computer is sleeping.

Since the 10.5.8 update my Macbook wont wake from sleep and i have restart it with the power button. The Macbook is totally frozen: the keyboard doesnt respond (caps button light wont go on and etc.) and my external monitor wont come on either.
    What I've tried:
-Install combo update 10.5.8 (i did normal update first time)
-Started up with all the magic keys combos (PRAM and SCM or whatever)
-Tried the fix where you need to (re)enable the ethernet port
    -Set sleephibernate mode to 0
Can anyone help me with this?

  • Mac pro shuts off when I try to wake from sleep

    Hello mac gurus.
I've a problem that is slowly getting more and more frequent.
    Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    OSX 10.5.6
    4 gig ram
When I leave work I let the computer go to sleep automatically. (I think I have it set for one hour of inactivity).
In the morning when I arrive at work, the LED power button is pulsing like it should. But... When I hit the space bar to wake the computer, I hear a clicking noise (from inside the computer), and the power button goes dark (ie: it shuts down completely). I then have to push the power button to restart and login as usual and all is fine.
This doesn't happen every time. But lately it seems to happen about 2-3 times a week.
I tried searching the message boards, but nothing seemed to describe my issue exactly. I'm suspecting an SMC reset might help, but again, that doesn't seem to be what's happening.
    Thoughts? Help?
    Thanks!
    Cyen

    Thanks Dale,
No I had not tried it, because I was unsure if the SMC reset was my problem or not. Since your post, I just did the reset this morning. I'll see if this fixed the problem, and I'll post an update in a few days (with hopefully positive results).
Note: I was expecting some sort of acknowledgment from the computer that the reset was successful, and there was none. So I hope I did it right.
(For those wondering, the SMC reset is simple. Shut down your computer. Unplug the power cord. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Plug it back in, and restart.)

  • ITunes shuts down when trying to import from CD

I have changed every setting and gone through every help file and uninstalled/reinstalled, etc and no matter what I do, when I try to import songs from a CD to iTunes, I get the message that iTunes has encountered an error and will be shut down at which point I have the option to send or not send the error report.
Why is this happening to me? I bought an iPod for my sister for a gift last night and loved it so much I went out and bought one for myself today and now I'm a little upset the only songs I can put on them are ones I buy from the iTunes music store

  • Audition shuts down when dragging in files from different folders.

Whenever I try to drag in music files (in WAV format) from two separate files, Audition shuts down. It stops responding. How do I fix this?

I suspect changing the audio driver won't make a difference, though it's certainly worth a shot.  Generally, when something like this occurs in certain editing modes, but not others, it's related to the Workspaces documents.<br /><br />It's pretty simple to verify:  Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Audition\3.0\ and move or rename the two Workspaces folders.  (Note: AppData may not be visible by default depending on your configuration, but you can manually append it to the location bar and it should become visible.)<br /><br />After moving these folders, launch Audition.  Audition will rebuild them to the defaults.  Let us know if the problem still occurs.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Durin

  • HELP Program shuts down when try to capture video

Every time I click on capture the program shuts down. I've used this program many times with no problem but now it won't even reconize my camera. And when I try to capture it shuts down completely. Anyone know what to do?

There is nothing wrong with FCE 2 as a program - it should not be necessary to upgrade it.
Have you tried plugging and unplugging the FireWire cable from both the computer and the camera.
Also see if iMovie will recognise the camera. if it won't you will know the problem is probably not the fault of FCE.
It is also possible that FCE may be corrupted in which case you should re-install it after having first uninstalled it by deleting ALL the files listed in this article:-

  • IMac shuts down when trying to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard

My iMac, purchased in November of '07, came installed with Tiger but also came with a Leopard OS update disk. When trying to upgrade to Leopard last week, every time I rebooted off the disk the computer would run for a minute in the gray screen and then suddenly shut off with no warning message. I checked HD in disk utilities, repaired my permissions and tried again with the same results. I've got 30 gigs of free space and 4 gigs of RAM which should be plenty. I talked to Apple support who walked me through the installation procedure with the same results and ended up shipping me a new install disk which came today. I am getting the same shut down on reboot with their replacement disk. Apple actually sent me two white disks. The first is labeled "For Mac Computers, Mac OSX Install disc 1" The second is labeled "MacBook, Mac OSX Install Disc 2" Since the second disc is label "MacBook" is it possible they sent me the wrong set of discs?
    Thanks

    rk87,
Thanks for replying. I have a 500 gig hard drive which yields a 465gig usable capacity, so, at 30 Gigs available, I don't have 10% of the drive free. This may be an issue, but my more immediate problem is that I can't get the install disk to boot up at all.
I called apple support again see what I could find out about the install disks which wouldn't work. The support guy seemed like he had a lot of knowledge about the system and suggested trying the Tiger install disk (that came with the machine) to see if it would boot up, which it did. After that success, I tried the Leopard update disk in another iMac I have at home and it worked as it should. Since the disk worked fine on the other mac, the guy at tech support speculated that there is some sort of hardware issue causing the install shut down on the computer in question.
His speculation was about the memory installed in the machine which might be the issue. I had bought the computer from an Apple Authorized store here in town who upgraded the RAM to 4GIGs using third-party memory. Even though the memory seems to have functioned properly for the past year, apple support says that there could be some sort of incompatibility with the third party product causing the install disk not to work.
Apple support told me about running a memory diagnostic off of the Tiger install disk by rebooting with the disk in the computer and hold down the "D" key. After I got off the phone I ran the test which turned out to take an hour in its long version. The test indicated no problems, but apple had told me that it might not be totally conclusive. At this point, I'm taking the computer back to the store where I bought it and will let them figure it out.

  • Unexpected shut down when trying to start from a osx cd or dvd

I cant startup from an osx cd or dvd. Ive even tried a norton utilities disk and I can boot in 9 but not osx. i have both original panther cds and tiger dvd. the machine has 9.2 and 10.1 and runs fine on both systems. but i cant get the install cds or dvd to work. When booting of the cd/dvd i get the gray scree with the apple and then the blue screenwith the spinning cursor the the computer shuts down. The shutdown is the fastest with the tiger dvd and longest with the panther cd.

    As for firmware, check http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117.
Reset the machine's defaults. Restart the machine booting into Open Firmware (holding down these keys until you get a text screen: OPT+ CMD + O + F). Then, enter these commands, following each with hitting the return key:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
For details, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60285. Note that, although the article is an overview for network servers, "most of the information included applies broadly to all PCI Macintosh systems" and is, IMHO, their definitive guide to Open Firmware and I recommend its perusal.
If that works, you might have to reset some System Preferences.

  • Shuts down when try to export

I have Xcelsius Engage 2008 and had no problems until recently.  When I try to export to Powerpoint (2003), Powerpoint opens but immediately Xcelsuis shuts down...I get a box saying Xcelsius must shut down.  Nothing is exported.  My dashboard has one chart with 4 combo boxes.  I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the software but it does the same thing.  I'm desperate, help!

    Hi Rebecca
What has changed on your pc/laptop recently?
A workaround is to export your dashboard to .swf and manually insert the file into Powerpoint:
    1. Right Click on your Powerpoint toolbar and select Control Toolbox
    2. Click on the More Controls Icon
    3. Select Shockwave Flash Object
    4. Right Click on the object and select Properties
    5. In the Movie or MovieData (cannot remember which) properties paste in the full path of your saved swf file
    6. Change the EmbedMovie property to True
Remember though that the dashboard will only show/work when you run the presentation.
    Regards
    Charles
