IBook sleeping weird

I recently changed out my harddrive on my 800mgz G4 ibook. All went smoothly. Although, now when I shut the lid on the ibook it doesn't sleep. It will sleep for one second then the Apple logo will light up. It also makes the noise like its starting up while the logo lights up.
Any ideas?
Thanx

Hi Francis,
Did you remove the top case when replacing the drive? There's a small magnet on the bottom of the top case that controls the sleep reed switch. It's pretty common for it to be displaced when the computer is opened.

  • Indigo ibook sleep mystery

Hi gang, i know this has been discussed here before, but i couldn't find a solution that worked.
i have an insomniac indigo iBook (FireWire). It has the latest firmware installed. It is loaded with OS 9.1 and OSX 10.4.6 (via Xpostfacto).
When running on battery power, the ibook operates normally. Closing the lid puts it to sleep as expected. However, on AC power the machine will sleep only a moment when the lid is closed, then it wakes for a moment, sleeps for a moment, wakes, on and on. This will also occur if the machine is on battery power, sleeping with the lid closed, and is then plugged in. It wakes immediately and begins the sleep/wake cycle. There are no USB devices attached at all. I have checked the aiport card and keyboard to make sure they are seated properly. I have cleared the NVRAM, PRAM, and OS X pref files mentioned in another post here.
Note that the symptoms are the same when i boot into OS 9! ***?

I had the same problem with my 1st generation
clamshell running os 9. I finally took it apart and
found that the charger board cable was slightly
loose. I am still not sure if the problem was fixed
by not having power to the motherboard for a day and
a half, or by the loose cable. Taking all power from
the iBook for a few hours might not be enough because
it has an electrolyte capacitor that retains power
    for hours.
First I would try to take power away for a day or two
and see if that helps. The reason the connection on
mine was loose is probably because someone dropped it
down 2 flights of stairs (the iBook was fine, I
can't say as much for the person who dropped it :~)

    Thank you Sir!
It would appear that the power board was the culprit. I removed the keyboard and top casing, but not all the way down to the power board. I removed the screw above it, pushed down firmly on the area, replaced the screw and tightened it all up.
Since reassmebly, the iBook sleeps normally when closed under AC power! The only caveat is that it sometimes wakes when jostled (again, under AC) but it goes back to sleep normally immediately. These symptoms provide more evidence of an AC board issue. I know a lot of folks have had issues with this board over the years.
    Thanks again!

  • Waking while closed and charging... every 15 seconds? iBook Sleep Apnea?

    Ok, here's a weird one...
When my iBook is closed and charging, every 15 secs or so, it tries to wake up (you hear the drive engage and the apple logo lights up) for 1/2 second and then goes to sleep... and the repeats over and over again. If it's shutdown this doesn't happen but only if it's closed and "sleeping".
And speaking of sleeping... it doesn't seem to want to sleep either... If the power cord is not plugged in and I go away, it does not go into auto-sleep and eventually the battery dies. (The screen dims but that's it.)
I've tried the PMU reset (cntrl-command-option-shift-power) but I am not sure how to tell if that worked, other than the clock being reset.
Any other ideas? It's quite odd and can't be healthy for the machine.

  • IBook sleeps immediately and doesn't respond

    Hello all,
I'm having some trouble with my iBook G4 and I was hoping someone could help. Here's the scoop:
I've had the computer for about a year and a half and it's been functioning quite well for the duration of my ownership (purchased new). Unfortunately, as with many laptops I have come across, the hard drive recently began to slow down and so I made the decisions to upgrade to a new / bigger disk.
Cut to the chase -> I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive to an image on a G4 Tower and installed the new hard drive following these directions:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/83.14.0.html
The new hard drive appears to function with no difficulties and it's initialized, formatted, etc. All the information was successfully copied back using Carbon Copy Cloner.
After installation I went ahead and reset the NVRAM and zapped the PRAM (might have made my mistake here) afterwhich I've been experiencing my problem (I didn't try a normal boot before this). The iBook will boot up to the login screen, at which time I have no control over the trackpad and keyboard, and then it will immediately enter sleep mode and not awaken. Here's the troubleshooting I've tried so far:
    - Resetting the NVRAM via Apple + Option + N + V at boot.
    - Zapping the PRAM via Apple + Option + P + R at boot.
    - Entering the Open Firmware via Apple + Option + O + F and entering nvram-reset, set-default, & reset-all.
    - Booting with the installation DVD and verifying / repairing both the permissions and the drive.
    Interestingly:
If I boot with the battery removed (using only the power cord) I regain function of the trackpad and keyboard. The system will allow me to login to OS X but it will enter the "eternal sleepmode" in about 15 seconds.
Also, If I boot with no battery as mentioned above but then connect the battery, it will immediately enter sleep mode.
Sometimes I'm seeing the screen dim with visible graphics before it enters sleep mode. Additionally, the grey Apple logo is failing to appear upon boot and the first image I see is the loading / login screen. I'm pretty lost here so if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. Otherwise I'm off to the Apple Store either tomorrow or Tuesday.
    Thanks in advance!

    Brent,
Hm...unfortunately I didn't try running the machine without first transferring the old information back. I was trying to get everything the same as it was in the past (OS, Apps, etc.) so I left the HD blank until the transfer.
I forgot to mention that when I was moving material back to the iBook after the hard drive upgrade (in Target Disk mode), the firewise screensaver dimmed and froze. The transfer was still successful but the screen symptoms were very similar to what I'm experiencing now (no sleep mode though).
I'm going to run the hardware test now and post the results. Thanks for the reply.

  • How to make iBook sleep automaticlly when power button is pressed?

I have an iBook G4. It had Tiger on it, then I took it apart to replace the hard drive and ram, and put Leopard on the new hard drive.
Now, it doesn't sleep when I close the lid. I can't find a setting that changes this, so I'm assuming something happened when I took it apart.
But also, now when I press the power button, it brings up a prompt that asks if I want to sleep, shut down, or restart. It's pesky because what used to be just closing the lid is now a button push, pointing, clicking, and then closing the lid.  When I had Tiger it would just sleep automaticlly when I pushed the power button.  Is there any way to get it to do this again? Or perhaps something I overlooked that changes what happens when I close the lid?

    Hello,
Check you have the correct options set in system preferences under 'Energy saver'.
Just make sure it's not set to sleep 'Never'
Seeming this iBook has been opened, it could be a problem with the magnet used to trigger sleep mode when the lid is shut.
Regards to setting the options for the power button, this is defined by the version of OS you have installed.
From what I recall, the screen options were available from Mac OS X 10.5 when you pressed the power button.

  • IBook making weird noise - think it's the fan

Hi, I've had this iBook for just over two years now, and lately it's been making a weird noise. Every so often something inside - I think it's the fan - will start making this sort of high whining whirring sound, then quiet down after a few minutes. It's not particularly tied to anything I'm doing, and will sometimes happen when I'm not doing anything. Also, I am using the computer on a normal desk, not in any situation which could lead to overheating, and the computer doesn't feel any hotter than usual.
I think the problem is getting more frequent over the past few months. I originally had 10.2 and I installed 10.4 when it came out, but I think the noise had already happened once before then, so I can't directly blame that. The computer has been running a little slower since I installed, though, and the trackpad has stopped working a few times lately.
Anyone have any suggestions what could be causing this, and is it just a nuisance or is it the first sign of the computer breaking down? If it needs repairing, where do I start? I'm very ignorant about hardware, so please try to explain simply! I do have a friend who can help me if at-home repairs are all that's needed, though.

    Esther,
Have you ever done an Archive and Install of your OS? If so, you may have a Previous System folder on your hard drive taking up a lot of space. This can safely be deleted.
Some folks delete files regularly, but forget to empty the trash. It isn't gone (and doesn't free up space) until you empty the trash.
You may want to download Monolingual, which will allow you to remove unnecessary languages and foreign fonts. Most people recommend keeping around 5 gigs free to allow for smooth operating in Tiger.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up, restart normally, and go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair permissions on the hard drive, as Barry has instructed above. (After repairing my hard drive via Safe Mode, I always repair permissions, even if I have done so recently.)
Hope you are on your way to a happier, quieter hard drive.

  • IBook Sleep/airport problems

I'm having some problems with the sleep function on my iBook since updating to Tiger. I am currently running 10.4.2, and neither of the updates has fixed it.
    Here is what's happening:
When running on battery, it will go to sleep normally, both by closing the lid and by by using the apple menu. It wakes from sleep fine and connects to my airport normally.
The problem comes when running off the power adapter.
The machine will not go to sleep, either by closing the lid or using the apple menu. The screen will go black, the pulsing light next to the lid latch will come on for a second, then i hear the drive starting back up, and the light stops pulsing and the screen comes back on.
The main problem is that when this happens, my airport will not come back on. when i try to mouse over the menu bar icon, i get an endless spinning beachball. Try to go to network preferences, same thing.
Everything else works and runs fine. The only way to fix the airport problem is with a restart (sometimes taking a "hard" restart of holding down the power button).
I've only had this problem since upgrading to tiger, and have tried changing the pwer management settings around, but i still get the same thing.
    any help?
    thanks
    r.

well, after doing a huge search for it, for the past few months, i've been unable to come up with a solution. it's rather frustrating, as i use my iBook as my main machine, complete with iCurve stand and Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for easier portability. I'd like to put the thing to sleep when i'm not around, and have everything work when i open it back up.
I finally, today, did something that seems to have fixed it. After trying multiple things such as moving the systemconfig folder and repairing permissions, nadda.
Then i tried to figure out what might be keeping the machine active when i tried to put it to sleep. i checked all of the running processes, and the only thing that i could come up with was my BT keyboard and mouse.
I went into the bluetooth preference pane and unchecked the "allow devices to wake machine".
this seems to have solved my problem, as i've closed the lid, put the iBook to sleep, and woke it up all without airport or other problems since.
    i'm a very happy camper.
I don't know why this just started happening since updating to tiger, and i don't know why it wasn't a problem when running off the battery, but it's fixed now.
I don't know if you use BT stuff on your G5, but it's worth a shot.

  • MacBook Pro overheating when monitor is in sleep [weird]

    Hello everybody,
this is my first post here but I am a long time Apple user (from 1995 until today).
Last summer, in August, I bought my new MBP 15" with non-Retina display, mid-2012 series which presents a very strange issue.
I investigated a lot on the problem, trying everything, without coming to a solution, unfortunately.
I think I will contact Apple also via Bug Report website, because I think it's a software bug. I'd like to hearing from you, as well.
Users' experiences are often more useful.
The thing is quite simple to reproduce: when I put the monitor(s) to sleep, doesn't matter if only the integrated one or using also the external display attached to the Mac, the GPU becomes HOT, let's say hotter than when using the Mac normally. Isn't it strange?
How do I measure the temperature?
There are many softwares. I use two: Temperature Monitor and iStat Pro, which is a widget for the Dashboard.
    I also use my hand!
If I go away from my desktop and leave the display going to sleep, or if I put it to sleep manually using a hot corner (it's the same, no difference), when I come back and touch the top case in the zone corresponding to the processor and the GPUs, it is uncomfortably hot.
When I use the MBP normally, like now, writing this post, with fifteen applications open (among which Photoshop) in the background the GPU is at only 48° and the top case slightly warm.
When I come back from sleep the sensors display temperatures that go from 60°C to 80°C !!!
It's absurd. Everybody knows that high temperatures are not healthy for electronic components and batteries.
I decided to investigate deeply, looking also into the logs, and I found, in /var/log/system.log the following excerpt just after coming back from sleep mode with the GPU working in some mysterious way:

Then I booked an appointment to the Genius Bar, in my nearest Apple Store in Rome.
First time, after explaining the issue, they changed the fans (...).
No way, it didn't work (I had my doubts from the beginning it should do, anyway).
Second time I booked, they resetted SMC and PRAM (NVRAM), and gave me the MacBook Pro back.
It didn't work. I did the reset before going to the AS, by myself, at home.
Third time I booked, suspecting a hardware problem, they changed the whole logic board.
    It didn't solve the problem.
I tested and reproduced the issue with the lastest release of Mac OSX, 10.8.3, with a clean install and no third party softwares installed. It happens not everytime the display goes to sleep, but almost everytime.
I also have done all the firmware updates, every time they came along in Software Update application from August 2012 since today.
I really don't know what else I can do, except writing to Apple Bug Reports and hope they read me and work on this.
Moreover, to understand if it's an issue related to the Intel HD Graphics 4000 card or to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M one I found and installed a simple software, gfxCardStatus, which allows you to bypass Apple automatic switch feature and choose manually which card to use.
I noticed that only using the most powerful card, the NVIDIA GeForce, the MacBook Pro becomes hot when the display is left alone and goes to sleep after the interval set in Energy Savings options.
Disabling the screensaver doesn't change anything.
Changing the period after which user's password is asked after waking the Mac from sleep changes nothing as well.
Useless to say, I need to leave my Mac turned on, because sometimes I have to access to it from another machine, and I also want to save energy and the life of my monitors putting them to sleep when I don't use them.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your attention so far.
    Daniele

The Zendock simply bunches the different normal plugs together. So there's no way for the MacBook to detect that it's being used.
I don't think I've seen a dock in recent times that does what you want it to do.

  • Ibook g4 weirdness

ibook will not charge battery. Running Tiger with 768 ram 14.1 GHz, Ibook just stopped chargng the battery. Then it would not start up with the power cord. So i bought a new power cord, and a new battery. Ibook started up and run perfect off the new battery, but would not charge the battery or run the ibook alone. So i replaced the DC board, reset the pram and reset the power management. And it still will not charge the battery or power on. But, will run great off the battery. The new battery life is down to 18 percent so I only have a few more restarts to try anything you suggest.
    thanks

  • IBook Will Not Automatically Sleep

Lately I have had a problem with my iBook G4 not automatically going to sleep after the specified period of time. Obviously this is a problem when running on battery power! I usually have it set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity to save the battery, but it will not go to sleep. I'll come back a few hours later to a dead battery. It does sleep when I shut the lid, and it goes to sleep fine when I select Sleep from the  menu. It will also go to sleep when the battery is low (about 2%). It just will not sleep after the interval that I set.
    I have tried the following:
Deleted the powermanagement.plist file then rebooted.
Verified the HD and repaired disk permissions both from disk utility and install disk.
Tried the cmd-shift-option-power reset option after shutting down, still the same...the iBook will not go to sleep on its own.
No software is running, no additional RAM has been installed, and this happens on both battery and AC power. Any thoughts?
    iBook G4, 12" 1.33 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Restart and hold down on the "shift" key until you see the spinning gear icon. This will startup the iBook in "safe" mode. Test to see if the iBook sleeps normally now. If it does, then you have some kind of third-party software conflict. If it doesn't, then you might consider resetting the Power Management Unit:

"cmd-shift-option-power" is not the same thing as "control-shift-option-power"...

  • Help!!! ibook automatic sleeping after startup

my ibook fell down from the desk, the display is broken, so i remove the display and all the cable of the display. then i connect another LCD. the ibook sleeping after startup. so what's wrong with it? anybody can give a solution?

It could be that you've damaged the system which checks whether the laptop lid is closed; whatever the cause of the problem is, it sounds like you need to get it repaired if it's fallen off a desk and the display is broken!

  • Sleeping iBook, instead of waking when opened, "died."

Overnight last night I let my iBook sleep as I have done many other times instead of turning it off. This morning I opened the laptop and, for half a second it seemed the screen was on, then it went black and the computer would not respond. I pressed the power button and it started right up. I remember waking up in the middle of the night and noticing how bright the iBook's little light seemed to be in the dark room and am wondering if the screen could have been on while the computer was "asleep".
Everything seems alright. I am wondering if anyone else has ever had this situation and if it means anything ominous?

Mine has done this from time to time since i got it. never seemed to be a problem

  • Sleep and the Power Adapter...

I have been having iBook sleep problems and here is an example. working on ibook with power adapter in. i close the lid and it goes to sleep but wakes up and goes back to sleep then finally its asleep. ok i click on my mouse and it wakes up. another would be i manually go and click on the sleep option and while the lid is open it sleeps wakes sleeps wakes...finally sleeps. i close the lid click the mouse it wakes up... so i decided to reset the PMU and everything and did the same test and the same things happend. then for some reason i said let me try this with the power adapter unplugged. so i tried it and now the sleep function is perfect. i put it to sleep without the adapter and i press on the mouse and it stays asleep untilll i open it...weird but does anyone know what i could do to fix this when its plugged in? anyone else have this problem? thank you.
    iBook G4 14 inch. & Imac G4 15 Inch   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Hello Steven,
I think the reason this is happening is just because of the mouse that is connected to the ibook. I have an external mouse that I connect to mine. When the ibook is connected to the power adapter, it will wake up if the mouse is clicked, because it is getting a signal, and therefore wakes up, then goes back to sleep (when closed) because of the switch inside the computer telling it to sleep. This also happens if you connect something to a USB port. I don't know exactly why this doesn't happen when it is not connected to the power adapter (Maybe to conserve battery power?), all I know is that it just doesn't happen.

  • Slow to sleep

I've recently upgraded from a late G3 iBook to a new White Santa Rosa MacBook, with which I'm having some sleep issues.
Firstly, the MacBook will not sleep if inactive. I've set it to go to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, but this does not happen. The screen goes to sleep, but the hard disk does not.
Secondly, if I close the lid or select 'sleep' from the menu, the hard disk does go to sleep but it takes about 30 seconds. The screen sleeps immediately, but the hard disk remains awake for a further half-minute or so. This is a bit annoying, as I'm used to the iBook sleeping instantaneously, and I'm loath to leave the MacBook with the lid closed and the hard disk active, for fear that it won't sleep and will fry itself.
I've tried resetting the PRAM and the PMU, but to no avail.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Thanks for your response.
I didn't know about 'safe sleeping' - thanks for that. I just tried restarting. Then, with no applications running, I closed the lid; sleep came more quickly - in 15 seconds, rather than 30 seconds when a few apps are open. Still, 15-30 seconds seems like a long time to me. Is that abnormal? A friend who is also running a MacBook (admittedly, an older version) says that his machine sleeps (hard disk asleep, pulsing LED) virtually instantaneously...
As for my energy saver settings: yes the computer is set to sleep after 10 minutes, not just the screen. And the 'Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible' box is checked, so that shouldn't be the issue.
    Any other ideas? Thanks.

  • Can ibook with built in airport detect a private wpa secure network?

I have an ibook g4 with built-in airport. My home supports a d-link wirless router on private broadcast and wpa-psk security. The ibook has no problems linking to the router and the network but when the ibook goes to sleep or is shut down, it drops the connection. When I awaken the ibook or turn the ibook back on, I have to enter the SSID and the password every time. Is this normal for airport?
If not, what would be the problem?
My airport is set to join prefered networks by default and the only prefered network listed is the private network on the d-link router.
I also have a wirless laptop PC and it is able to pick-up and join the network without prompting though it sometimes has a hard time obtaining an IP address.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

This started to happen to me just recently as well. The iBook was having no problem maintaining the connection with the wireless network. Over the past few days, the connection drops whenever the iBook sleeps or I restart. I have to reenter all the information.
I don't recall any sort of updates being installed, but it's very confusing.
