IBook slowing down...

for some reason over the past week or so, my iBook has been slowing down, taking more and more time to do things (even the simple ones, suchas open finder...)
This pretty much all started when updated to 10.4.4, updated itunes and so on, and installed Google earth (love this thing i have to say!! ;)) Anyway, repaired permissions a couple of times, ran MacJanitor, am only using 70% of my 60Gb, have 512Mb of RAM..., and checked the CPU usage, and nothing is "pumping" all of the power... it should all run fine. but the spinning wheel appears more and more, and it's getting on my nerves!... Any ideas on what i should/could do to get it running smoothly again?
Thanx in advance
Charles

boy you were fast on this one, as you advised i downloaded cocktail, and did what you advised. I also verified my disc and here is what i got (sorry it's in french... don't know if you'll understand)
Le volume The volume needs to be repaired.
Erreur : La tâche sous-jacente a signalé un échec à la fermeture
1 volume HFS vérifié
Le volume nécessite des réparations
The last sentence is "the disk needs to be repaired", and a few lines above it says minor reparations...
Now i'd be glad to do so, but of course i left my cds in paris, i am now in Boston, so any idea on how i could do this, it does not seem too bad, but i'd like to get it right
Thanx for being soooooooo quick
regards

  • URGENT!- ibook slowing down, NEED HELP BADLY

    Good day.
When I bought my ibook, i upgraded the RAM of this right away. i added a 512MB RAM. I was happy with the way it was performing. After a few months, i decided to buy an externat 40GB hard drive because i found the internal hard drive too small and love downloading song and shows over the internet. after a few months, i noticed that my ibook slowed down. before, the "beachball " would seldom appear. now it appears alot. i just noticed that my ibook has really slowed down. i admit, i download a lot. but all these downloads go straight to the external hard drive. the files that i save in the internal hard drive are only excel, word, and pwerpoint files. very small. anyone can help me? is there something that i can use to speed up my ibooks performance? what should i do? is there such a thing as defragment (just like the one of a pc).

    Hi Michaelgnm,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Try verifying and repairing permissions (Knowledge Base Document #106712 on Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X). Do you notice you slow during certain times. An example would be working an file from your external hard or using iPhoto. How much hard drive space do you have on your internal hard drive? You may want try deleting programs that you don't use (on my iBook I don't use Garage Band, iDVD, etc). Maybe freeing up some space can help speed things up.
A great program to show you exactly what is on your computer is WhatSize.
If you are going to use WhatSize to delete any files/programs/applications, please be careful and make sure you know exactly what you are deleting and if there are any repercussions. WhatSize will show you files that you would not normally see; they are referred to as "invisible files". These invisible files are hidden from the users view because they would clutter the desktop and they hold vital information that if corrupted or deleted may cause problems. Please make sure you know what you are doing!
Have you deleted files that you don't use; like for my iBook, GarageBand. I use GarageBand on my iMac because it is much easier and faster, so I deleted it on my iBook. Have you tried the "erase install method"? The reason for doing this is because Mac OS X installs all the necessary fonts, languages, drivers, etc that people all over the world my need, by default. This tends to take up some room that you might want to get rid of (make sure first what you don't need and need). You erase and install your system software (Knowledge Base Document 301270 About Install Options w/ Mac OS X 10.4), and when installing, do a custom install. This way you can install the languages, drivers, and applications you want. The same technique can be done with iLife.
Do you using any "pro" applications (Adobe Photo CS, Aperture, etc)? You may want to try using a program like OnyX to run some maintenance scripts.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • IBook slowing down (or so it seems...)

    Hi Everyone,
I have had my iBook for just over a year, and recently I have been experiencing some slow down in opening documents, Camino, Word, Excel and other apps. I normally have 1 or 2 (or up to 4) apps open, but recently I will have 2 apps "Not Responding" and I have been getting the Beachball much more often than I have in the past. Any ideas/remedies or solution would be welcome.
    Best Regards,
    Michael Barney

When I have Activity Monitor, iTunes and Camino it would vary from 6% usage to 51%. Then when I would connect to a webiste or a song would change it would spike up. My ram would vary from around 75 to 85 MB of my 512 free.
I think I am getting frustrated with my school's crappy internet and I am not sure if that has something to do with it.
I was having problems connecting to these discussion boards. Then I quit out of Camino and I reloaded it all and it worked...
I think my computer is possesed.

  • Why has ibooks slowed down on my iPad 2 since the iOS 8 download?

SInce my iOS 8 download on my iPad 2 device, the system drags through every move. Pages turn slowly, highlighting drags through the process, etc. it was very good before the download. My wife who has an Ipad 2 along with many other friends are having the same issue with ibooks. Can we expect a fix soon?

I have the exact same problem on my iPad mini.  There is so much lag in iBooks after the iOS 8 upgrade that it's barely tolerable.  It used to be that pages turned smoothly, books opened & closed smoothly, etc., but not anymore.  I often find myself flipping accidentally through several pages because there is such a slow response time to my taps for advancing pages.  In other words, I'll tap the screen to turn a page, nothing happens, so I tap again, & then suddenly iBooks will finally respond and 2 or 3 pages will flip.  It's extremely frustrating.
Their is also some other general glitchiness (for lack of a better) word that I've been experiencing, but I'll try to observe it a little longer so I can better define what's happening.

  • 10.4.5 slows down PB a lot!

I just installed 10.4.5 on my Aluminium Powerbook (15") and it has slowed down like crazy. I think its something to do with the graphic drivers or engine. Some examples of slow down or screw up I have observed are:-
    1. This morning I tried to get the computer out of the screensaver (the RSS feed). usually it takes a second if that. But today, after the update, it took 2-3 minutes to get out of the screensaver.
2.) When opening the laptop after it was in sleep, the graphics across the menu bar at the top were very messed (i.e. instead of showing the percentage battery left like "(64%)" all it showed was "("
3.) Other slow downs are in programs like Camino 1.0. I installed it yesterday before the update, and found it very fast and smooth scrolling. Now however, there is noticable lag in scrolling and loading and reacting to mouse clicks.
Any one else having similar issues?? Better yet, anyone have solutions?
(I know my friend who has the titanium 15" PB is also experiencing the same/very similar issues with 10.4.5)

    You are correct. It does.
My little brothers Ibook slowed down tremendiously after the 10.4.5 combo update from 10.4.4 .
He then tried disk utility + repair etc. and then Onyx and alos optimize.
Did it fix the slowness ??
Yes it did and now it is faster than 10.4.4 on his Ibook.
PS: I bought him some 1gb SAMSUNG pc2700 ram and after replacing his Nanya 1gb ram with the Samsung he had a 200% speed increase on his 1.25ghz 14" Ibook while on 10.4.4 .
We suspect the Nanya was unhappy / defective.
My suggestion to anyone outhere is to disk repair or ONYX+Optimize as this will likely fix it.
    Hope this helps.

  • A lot of us have iBooks that are slowing down.

What iBook do you have? Memory? CPU usage? OS? Etc.
I purchased my iBook in January of this year. 1.42, 14", 512 memory.
It ran so fast. Faster than my 1.25 Power PC G4 at work! I installed Tiger a few month or so ago and now it's running much slower than it did. I've reinstalled the OS, removed CS2 and Dreamweaver (since they were the last installed), verified and repaired disks.
After updating to 10.4,2, system profiler now says "CPU Speed 1.33" even though it is 1.42. ???
    CPU
Photoshop has 32.80, Safari has 3.5, Itunes 1.9
    147mb of inactive memory.
    I have 44.05g free on a 80g hard drive.
Only thing connected is a bluetooth mouse.
I'm going back to the Genius Bar tomorrow. I'm extremely upset that my iBook is running so slow.

I purchased my iBook in January of this year. 1.42, 14", 512 memory.
If you purchased your ibook in January your CPU speed is in fact 1.33ghz. The latest speed bumps from 1.33ghz to 1.42ghz on the 14" happened in July of 2005. Try repairing disk permissions and optimizing the disk to see if that helps. (Run a program like Onyx, Cocktail, or MacJanitor to do this or do it manually) Another user went as far as purchasing DiskWarrior (which is not a bad idea) to repair and optimize his HD and found that the 'peppiness' returned.
With 512mb of ram you will probably notice a larger slow down than on a machine with 1g. 512mb is the minimum amount of ram that is recommended for running OSX.

  • IBook G3 Slowing Down Considerably

My old iBook G3 has slowed down a lot, especially since I upgraded to Tiger. I am planning to increase the RAM but, I was also wondering if it might be that I am reaching the point of filling the hard drive.
Question : will adding an external HD help speed up things or would I need to change the internal HD with bigger capacity ?

I'd definitely recommend upgrading the RAM with a 512 MB module.

  • IBook G4 slowing down -- Archive & Install question

    Hello,
I have an iBook G4, that I bought I believe back in late 2004. It's been slowing down quite a bit and I'm thinking about performing an Archive & Install, which a guy at the Genius Bar recommended would make my performance much quicker and less spinning beachballs.
I have an Airport, through which I access my internet wirelessly, and printer wirelessly. After performing an Archive & Install, will I need to re-setup my wireless internet and ability to print wirelessly? It's been a long time since I set these up the first time, and kind of dread relearning the process.
    Thanks,
    Ben

You could try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
(In the future, you may want to post in the iBook G4 Forum. You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum.)

  • Imovie slows down then freezes while importing from camera

I am trying to import a movie from my canon hv10. I've never had problem the last 2 movies I did. but this time around it starts importing, and a few clips later, slows down to 1/8th time. then freezes. The camera is still playing but it has stopped importing. I have tried to pause it to let it catch up. Restarting it numerous times. It is being imported into my 500 GB hard drive. I have 400 GB available. It's worked before in HD. Any ideas? anything would be helpful, I've searched every single message board so far. thanks.

I had a smilar problem. it came up when I changed OS to Leopard OS X 10.5.
My Imovie HD 5 had been working fine until then under earlier OS versions, both in LP as well as in normal mode. Then all of a sudden importing stopped eery few seconds.
I checked many discussions in this forum and tried a lot of suggested solutions, to no avail. I have now come to realise that Leopard is the problem, not the camera, the cable, or preferences or good old iMovie HD.
I simply went back to an older laptop (iBook) running OS 10.3.9 and iMovie 3 . No problem whatsoever importing clips (just had to start a new project about every 20 minutes of clip import). Then attached my external harddrive via firewire, copied the projects to the Hard Disk and then opened them with iMovie HD 5 and bingo: the project was OK and could be further worked on.
So that does not solve the basic problem, but is not too complicated as workaround.

  • Internet speed in Snow Leopard slows down because of connected External HDD

I have two external Iomega harddrives that I connect through FireWire 800 to my MacBook Pro 17".
I noticed, when the harddrives are plugged in, safari lags and slows down tremendously. As I eject my harddrives from my MacBook Pro, the internet miraculously comes back at normal speed. The harddrives are just mounted, no data is being transferred.
I am not sure why this is, or why external harddrives would bother my internet connection. I am connected through my Airport wirelessly to my home router. Other computers get wireless internet fine as I notice this problem with my MacBook Pro.
Anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it? I notice restarting sometimes helps, but this problem comes back after awhile.
Also while I am mentioning this, I also notice the internet slow down when the MacBook Pro runs on battery. Anyone know why this is, and how to fix it as well?
Thank you, and Happy Holidays to all!

I do not notice any connection between my external harddrives being connected and internet connection no more. So that is good.
What I have been noticing though, is my MacBook Pro at some points loosing connection to the internet. The Airport icon in the menu bar says it is connected to my wireless internet at full reception. But at times Safari and Firefox are just not working. I try reseting my internet routers and the problem still exists. It comes down to me having to restart my MacBook Pro, which seems to fix the issue.
I have a iBook G3 with Tiger, and a Dell laptop with XP, and they both receive wireless internet fine when in use. And this is while my MacBook Pro is not.
I am not sure what the issue is now. Right now I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to fix this besides contacting apple and using my applecare.
Is there any internet connection problems similar to what I just described I should be aware of? Thanks in advance!

  • Airport slows down after the latest update !

I have a ibook running the latest version of the masOs . After doing a automatic software update ( if I recollect it did a MacOs and Airport update - the computer has slowed down and access the wireless networks with great difficulty ! How do we resolve this problem or go back to the earlier version ?

What kind of difficulty accessing wireless networks?
    I've experienced no such problems.
Did you quit all running applications before installing the 10.4.6 update? I always quit all running applications before installing any OS, Software or Security updates.
Before installing a major OS Update such as 10.4.6, I always check my hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from my Tiger install disc.
As a first step, I suggest Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
To revert to an earlier 10.4 x version such as 10.4.5 will require re-installing 10.4 via your 10.4 install package (archive & install selecting preserve user and network settings) and then update to the chosen version only.

  • My Hard Drive Won't Slow Down! please help

    Hi everyone,
I just got my B&W powermac up and running again after some upgrades: a radeon 7000, 500 Mhz Sonnet G4, 1gig of RAM... Well all of a sudden my hard drive just spun all the way up and will not slow down no matter what. I went to system preferences and checked "put discs to sleep when possible" - Nothing. I ran Onyx and cleared all my caches and what not - Nothing. I have restarted, reset my PRAM, pressed the CUDA button... I'm out of ideas. And my hard drive is raging like it is booting up or something so I don't know what to think. Please help me slow my hard drive down. It is a WD Caviar 40G, and I am running OS 10.3.9 and it is totally up to date. Thanks so much for any suggestions!
    -Kurt

I don't think it's a ribbon issue. I checked it out. As for the jumpers, I'm not really sure exactly what to look for. I have only messed with jumpers one time and I was following a chart to set up a slave drive on a Dell and it was a long time ago... On My B&W, what exactly would I looking for if it was a jumper problem?
    Thanks again, in advance!
    -Kurt

  • Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING)  is slowing down...

    Hey everyone,
So I've had my G4 iBook for about a year and a half now and everything is slowing down. And I mean, EVERYTHING! When I click an icon on the dock, it takes almost two full seconds before it starts to bounce and load up. When I'm loading a web page and then open a new application, I get the spinning color wheel for about 15-30 seconds before something responds.
Anytime I seem to give it multiple, simple tasks, it starts to freeze up and give the spinning wheel for a bit before everything starts responding again.
I have already wiped the drive and tried reinstalling Tiger. And I have no third party RAM in there. I've reset the PRAM as well.
My optical drive also makes very loud noises, and appears to be working although that seems slow, too. (Maybe it's having trouble reading discs?) For example, when I was coping some files from CD to my hard drive, copying went at a rate at about 1 MB per second, which seems much slower to me than usual. And after I wiped the drive, it took about 7 hrs. to reinstall Tiger completely off the DVD. Is that normal?
Could this be the processor or motherboard? This is my second iBook (the first was replaced by Apple after about 6 major repairs to the motherboard in two years.) I love my iBook and I don't think I'm INCREDIBLY hard on it, so I don't know why I'd be having these kind of problems... any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Doug,
I have 768 MB of RAM. And weird thing, I did try booting off the hardware test disc, and it rejected it, saying it wasn't compatible... but it is the iBook Hardware Test disc, the one that came with the computer... any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Making my ibook slower

    Hi
I am running 10.1 on an ibook 600. Right now, I get about two hours of battery on automac. I only use this laptop for typing/email. I was wondering if there is a program that can slow down the clock speed of my ibook becides the system prefs.
    Thanks!

Why would you want to do that? If you are thinking you will increase your battery time, it's doubtful that would do much.
If you are running from the original battery, two hours of battery time is very good for a battery that has an average lifespan of two to three years.
If you need more battery time, you may want to consider ordering an extra battery.

  • My iMac 8.1 was slowing down and had permissions problems. I backed everything up, and then re-installed. Now all I get is a black screen. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: HDD-1336. Help!

My iMac 8.1 (10.6.8 ) was slowing down and had recurrent permissions problems, mostly with Java. I backed everything up, and then re-installed from time machine. Now all I get is a black screen which says I need to reboot. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: 4 MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1336 or HDD-1327. When I reboot from the OSX CD and start disc utilities everything checks out OK. When I reload 10.5.2 from the OSX CD everything seems to work OK and no more permissions problems. But then I loose all my email and safari stuff. Anyone have any ideas short of going back to my old PC?

    Cheers. Don
No unfortunatley it's too old, you are referring to Target Display Mode which became avialble in 2009, your 2008 needs to have the HD replaced. I'd still do that if everything else is OK or you can simply buy a new MM and display or even a new iMac  or an Apple refurbished iMac to save money.
