IBook Space Bar

I have a refurbished iBook G4 with a space bar that is not responding when pressed on either end, although it does work when pressed in the center. Is this just wear on a key that is weighted from the center or is this typical of the keyboard.

Hi,
Welcome to the Discussions.
The key should respond when pressed on at any point. It's probably defective. If you contact Apple or visit an Apple Store they'll send you one or replace it.

  • IBook Space Bar not working

Anyone know if this involves merely a keyboard cleaning or something else?
This just started yesterday, and I shut down rather than put it to sleep, and then re-started, thinking it was just some electronic glitch. Still dealing with it today.
Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated, since Apple repair is 100 miles away!
    Cheers -

Hey Nathan and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Yes you should have started a new thread because the one you're at the bottom off has nothing to do with your problem. So repost and start a new thread with the proper title. I think this would be of interest to people in the same boat.
    That said, look here:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=16690
    click on the:
"Click to download Key Installation Instructions (1.4MB)"
to download a .pdf on how the keys attach and especially how the scissors mechanism works.
    Then look here:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=iBookSpac ebardetail.jpg
Which is a detail of the spacebar itself. It's the right side and it's flipped back so the top is the bottom as it installs on the keyboard.
The left side is the mirror image of this side.
Those two metal bars must be attached as shown and be intact otherwise you'll need a new spacebar. (Power Book Medic as above)
So basically you slide the "scissor guides" over the bottom of the nibs on the bottom part of the scissors ( Again study the pic of the scissors mechanism closely. If any of those nibs are broken or missing you'll need a new mechanism.)
Both side at the same time and push down hard. The top of the scissors mechanism will snap in place (Scissors clips) and at the same time the stabilizer bars (those two metal bars) will also snap in place.
    Good luck.

  • My iBook's Keyboard Space Bar, right and F5 buttons not working...

Yesterday I cleaned up my iBook's keyboard. Everything was working fine until I left my computer idle, even backlight of the display was dimmed. Then I noticed that my display was lit again, like if I had pressed a button on the keyboard, but I was away of my computer, I was on bed. Suddenly the keyboard started acting weird like if it had the command key pressed, so i disconected all power supplies and let the computer opened on my desk. I suspected that the keyboard somehow got wet, but I doubt it.
Today everything seem to be working fine, until I tried to type something and noticed that the space bar, F5 and the right arrow (also end) don´t work :S
I need help of what can be causing this, i already tried reseting the PMU, removing all power sources, checking preferences and even repaired permisions and noting seems to work. I just hope that my keyboard is not defective since my iBook just lost warranty past august :S

I cleaned it with a mild soap and a clean cloth. Both were damp. I have cleaned it like this before and had no problems.

    Walloon,
I have an A1048 here w/ the spacebar off and it's identical to the A1044.
I have tried poking at the silicone activator with the end of a pen and with the end of a letter opener,
So if you feel that silicone dome go all the way down and bottom out and nothing happens then indeed some water must have gotten in there.
I thought I was being careful when cleaning the base board with a soapy cotton swab,
    Ah hah!
Here's some pics I took of corrosion on an iBook actuator membrane. The A1048 works exactly the same way:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=iBookkeyb oardtracecorrosion.jpg&newest=1
This was a beer spill as I remember. So see the part I call the "overlay mask" it's thin plastic over another thin plastic sheet that has those conductive traces painted on it. Liquid instantly wicks between the two sheets and takes forever to dry out.
It is possible to take the entire keyboard apart and repair the damaged trace w/ rear window heater paint but it's a massive pain. Every one of those keys has a tiny silicone dome underneath it and when you take it apart they go flying everywhere. I'm still finding them on the floor of my shop.
It might just dry out and start working after a few days. Otherwise new/ used keyboard.

  • Space Bar Issues

For the last several months I've noticed that my space bar when pressed won't respond unless I almost bang on it. I've tried cleaning under the key, and increading keyboard sensitivity via the system preferences. Does anyone have any other ideas that would help? It drives me crazy to have to double back and put spaces between words when I've done a substantial amount of typing. PLEASE HELP!!!
    Shakira
P.S. I'm not 100% sure my iBook has Mac OSX (10.4), it may be a little higher or lower. Unfortunately I'm not at my home computer right now to check.

    hi Shakira-
this could be caused by a software problem. when you get to your computer again find your install disks for the current operating system (make sure it is whatever it says in the system profiler) and run a disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. if this isn't helpful, then create a new user in system preferences > accounts by clicking the plus sign above the lock. test the keyboard in the new user to see if there is any difference. as well, try resetting the pmu on your ibook. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449. • Space Bar Help

I have an IBook G4. When I hit the space bar the computer beeps and the space ba r doesn't work. However, when I hold down the alt/option key and hit the spaceba r it works. How do I fix this?

Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and check whether either the listening key or the speech key has become set to the space bar; if so, change the setting.

  • Hitting space bar  scrolls safari or other programs twice

when i hit space bar safari or programs that accepts space bar for scrolling, twice as much as one hit happens. touch space but n twice scrolling happens. not sure why this is happening any help please? 1.42 ghz powerpc g4 512 mb built in

Hi, Natasha. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. Check the settings in the System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab. You might try setting a slower the Key Repeat Rate or a longer Delay Until Repeat.
    2. If you're using an external keyboard with your iBook, try a different keyboard.
    3. If the Space Bar is sticking in other uses, e.g. normal typing, there may be a problem with the keyboard itself.
    4. What changes did you make to your Mac before this problem arose? If the problem arose after making a change, it's possible the change is the cause.
    Good luck!

  • Upgraded to snow leopard, now safari scrolls a page down when space bar is hit and sometimes crashes.  Any ideas for a fix?

I just upgraded to the new snow leopard, now my Safari is acting loopy.  At times, the page will scroll down when I hit the space bar.  As I type this discussion the screen isn't paging down, but if I go to the tab where I have facebook loaded and hit the space bar, it acts as a page down key.  I've had safari crash about 5 times tonight for no apparent reason.  The delete key sometimes will act as a page back key.  I really have no idea whats going on.
I've had keyboards go wacko on me before due to something being spilled on them or a wireless problem, but this keyboard is a wired keyboard and nothing was spilled on it.  It's rather new and I'm quite certain it's not a keyboard issue.
No settings have been changed on the computer.  The only thing different today from yesterday, is the fact that I upgraded to snow leopard.
    Help would be pretty sweet.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Why do none of the links that I put in my outgoing yahoo emails no longer underline themselves and become live when I finish typing them and hit the space bar?

Previously, when I typed my email address in an outgoing email or cut and pasted a link from my browser bar the link would become 'live' when I hit the space bar or 'enter' key. The link would turn blue and underline itself and the person receiving the email could just click on that live link and be taken to the site. Now the link does not turn blue or underline itself and the receiver must cut and paste the link into their browser bar to use it.
Why? I did not change anything in Yahoo or Mozilla.
I have deleted and reinstalled Java to no effect. I am using html in Yahoo.

As it turns out, many others have been having similar issues on other browsers. It seems that maybe Yahoo! is taking a much longer time to load or something like that. Either way, its been working on and off all week, and the same issue even showed up yesterday with IE 8 instead of FF. It still loads faster than IE 8, but again is spotty. Some people think the issue may be with mail.yimg.com or s.yimg.com, which I could see was the loading url in the left corner whenever Yahoo! Mail was refusing to work. A couple of people said blocking it caused the issue. Alternatively, some people suggested blocking it to solve the problem. Does anyone have any information on that? Again, I have no add-ons that would be blocking any urls, and my firewall hasn't any records of it. I really don't want to do anything to mess up my browsers more than they may have already been. Thanks for all of your help so far!

  • What key(s) do i type to change language from english to other? i am writing s story in dual languages. i was told to click command and space bar together but it is not working.

what key(s) do it type to change language from english to other? i am writing a story in dual languages. I was told to click command and space bar together but it is not working.

Command Spacebar opens Spotlight as you have found out. If you want to change languages you need to say what app you are using to write the story in, I'm guessing you are using Pages or MS Word. If that's the case
Pages: Open Inspector - Click the T tab - Click Language and change your language.
MS Word: Tools Menu - Language - Choose your language.

Have yo tried the standard fixes:

  • How to make the words show up without me prompting by tapping space bar?

Now that I have gotten all the text on the front page to appearall together and not one line at a time, each line prompted by me hitting the Space bar, how do I get the words to appear all on their own without me tapping the space bar? This will be exported as a video to Youtube so the viewer won't be able to tap the space bar to make the video progress.
Isn't there something called ”automatic”? I want to just click the “Play” button and have the text just appar all on its own.
Mireille, thanks for telling me about that Build feature. It worked nicely. I chose “iris.”
    ~ Lorna in Southern California

Oh now I see! It was in that hidden drawer, and to see that drawer you had to click Other Options. Ok. So now I set it to Automatic! Merci, Mereille. ~Lorna

  • I want to always be able to page down using space bar, but some web pages seem to disable this.

I often use the space bar to page down in web pages rather than scrolling with the mouse or arrow keys, but in the last few months I've encountered a number of pages that don't seem to allow this browser feature to work. For instance, space bar doesn't page down on https://medium.com/about-work/65d4740f7a2f, although it works fine on mozilla.org and nearly all other sites. The problem is specific to particular pages, so I think it's unlikely to be an add-on problem, and it's certainly not that I've turned on caret browsing. As far as I've tested, the arrow keys still work to scroll such pages, and the mouse always works, so it seems as if space bar has been specifically disabled. (Generally the pages on which space doesn't work seem to be specialized for phones, judging by layout and font size.) Is it possible to reject whatever code is disabling my browser so that my space bar always works?

Another possibility would be a userscript. A userscript is generally written to work on a particular site, although it also can be made to work globally on all pages.
To run a userscript, you require either the Greasemonkey extension or the Scriptish extension.
And somebody to write the script! You can propose a new userscript to the community and see whether anyone is willing to create it for you.
Ideas and Script Requests forum: http://userscripts.org/forums/2
(I searched briefly on userscripts.org but didn't see a script for this purpose posted there. Please be careful in testing scripts from the site as many recently posted scripts mess with your Facebook account when you visit FB.)

  • Space bar leaves ghost spaces after reboot???

    This is STRANGE.
Not sure if this is the right forum thread.
I have a USB Apple Keyboard (aluminum) I bought in March 2009 for my MBP 15" (C2D, late 2006, 2.33MhZ). It has worked fabulously (I had to get used to it; I used to like the MBP keyboard for typing, but now I hate it!). Suddenly today, the *space bar* on the USB kb just doesn't work anymore. I typed in Safari, Nisus Writer Pro, but the space bar on the USB kb will not work (all other keys work, and the spacebar on my MBP works). When I fixed permissions (the keyboard is immaculately clean), and rebooted, nada. When I tried to reset the PRAM (googled), nada. However, right after reboot, when I opened safari, and clicked in the search field, *all the spaces I tried to type BEFORE the reboot appeared*! Like a player piano, the spaces were being typed out, the spaces that I *had already typed*—but which never appeared—until now, AFTER the reboot. I can stop it by hitting any other key,
I can repeat this strange behavior. Does anyone have ANY advice on this?
I have latest snow leopard 10.6.1, 3g RAM (4 in slots).
    Thank you, Richard
UPDATE: It actually seems like there is something LAYING on the space bar instead. I tried to type 5 spaces, but when I rebooted, the spaces kept being typed for about 30 seconds, and then stopped. There is nothing on the space bar, however.

Actually, now it's also some other keys plus the shift key. Shift-V doesn't work, neither does Shift-Left Curly Bracket.
    There is something really wrong!
Off to apple store equivalent (no Apple store yet in Paris)
thanks, and if anyone has any other advice

  • I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function works

I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function, render workspace function, export file are still operational. How can I fix it so I may complete my assignment?
Besides DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite 6 is the only software on the machine. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Operating System on AMD FX 6100 six-Core Processor at 3.31gHz and 32 GB RAM memory. There are two SLI-bridged GTX680 NVidia cards.
The software was very stable for the last six months, working with 720P proxy files from 2.5K masters (Blackmagic Design Camera). I am working on a feature-length project that exceeds 1000 edits. I have broken the file into 2 one hour segments.
I have deactivated the software before reinstalling the entire OS from scratch. PP6 was very stable for 48 hours. Then the freezing space bar returns. After a dozen strokes into the project, same problem.  I have made cache files store next to originals, I have deleted preview files if they were corrupted and causing instability. Am I missing something?
I have Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection. I double checked the memory for damage/defect. Nothing says that the motherboard or other components are damaged.
I am in film competition overseas and need to have deliverables in less than a month's time.  I lost the last two weeks troubleshooting and this crisis came at an inopportune moment of the project.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Still getting software freezes but found a way to mitigate for the mean time.
Upon launching Adobe Premiere Pro, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to launch TaskManager as well.
You will want to highlight Adobe QT32 Server.exe
Right click and select "End Process Tree"
You will get considerable stability in the program, long enough to get timing of cuts done. Be sure to save often.
If the program freezes, do not hit Save. You definitely want to avoid saving the corruption into your TimeLine
CTRL-ALT-DEL to relaunch the TaskManager and highlight Adobe Premiere Pro.exe
    Right-click to "End Process"
No need to reboot the whole system; just launch Premiere Pro again and continue with the session. Note that your work reverted to Last Save.
Hope this helps until the bug is fixed.
