Ibook sparks when plugged in

My Ibook sparks inside the case when the power supply gets plugged in. I am using a power supply from Macally. The power supply from my Dad's G3 Ibook also sparked when I tried that one. By sparking I mean that I can see blue light in the corner of the Ibook the instant it gets plugged in the power supply. The original power supply died when I accidently tripped over it and ripped one of the cords off the power brick. The Ibook is long off of Apple Care and has been replaced with a Macbook Pro. So my question is what do I do about the sparking? Also, no sparks actually leave the computer, there is just lots of blue light when the power supply is plugged into it.

I'd be really concerned about this, Aaron, and I guess maybe you are, since you're posting here.
Often when someone trips over an adapter and pulls the plug from the iBook, it damages the internal power input (DC-in) board (the part of the iBook that houses the adapter port). Usually, this results in an iBook that won't charge the battery and won't run from the power adapter. Once the battery is depleted, you have to recharge the battery with an external battery charger or another iBook.
It could be that yours is damaged (hence the sparks), but hasn't entirely failed. I think you should get it repaired before it starts a fire. That could happen.

  • Sparks when plugging into wall

Has anyone else ever noticed that the Powerbook AC adapter tends to spark when plugging it into the wall? Every now and then when plugging it in you will see and hear a spark pop right between the prongs and the wall outlet. Both of my Powerbooks have done this off and on since I got my first one a couple years ago. Not really a problem, just always kinda wondered why it does this. Anyone know the answer?

My experience with the adapter didn't go as well as the rest of you... A few weeks ago those harmless sparks fired my PowerBook. There was a ground in the adapter that would often prevent charging but that day it did more. there was a larger than normal spark and then a humming coming from the connection to the computer. when i tried to turn it on nothing happened even with 30% battery.
Anyway, when I got it back from repair they had replaced the motherboard, sound card and battery. Suprisingly Apple didn't replace my adapter, I had to call and remind them why they did all the work in the first place. The new adapter doesn't spark (yet).
Moral of the story; never connect the power cord to your computer before pluging it into the socket. My 2 cents.

  • Left USB Sparking when plugged in.

    Hi there,
The left side USB on my PB has started sparking when I plug a usb cable in. It feels magnatized when it does, and at the exact same time my power plug turns off (ie the yellow or orange light turns off and the power stops working.). The USB then doesn't work and I have to wait about 10 minutes before putting the power back in and it starts working again.
The USB on the right side does not do it, and works fine.
    Could someone please help me.
    Regards.

I don't know about the magnetized feel, but either one of the pins in the USB connector is bent up or there's something wrong with the board that the left USB connection sits on. Your best bet would be to have it looked at by your nearest Apple repair center (if it's under warranty)

  • Sparks when plugging external monitor in

Slightly worried, just connected my Dell monitor via DVI to my macbook pro and noticed a small spark each time the adapter touched the port. This only happens when the display is powered.
Should i be worried, is this normal?
    thanks.

In addition to the other suggestion, I recently went through this and the problem ultimately required rewiring of the service to my house. There was a poor earth-neutral bond.
If the 3-prong adapter doesn't do it, I strongly recommend that you have an electrician check things out as this could be a potentially hazardous situation.

  • Short/Sparks When Plugging in Airport Extreme

Just unboxed my new Airport Extreme to set up a streaming audio link from iTunes and sparks flew from the unit as I plugged it into a socket...The unit is slightly melted and burned and I got a tiny burn on my fingers pulling the unit from the wall. Yikes. Obviously I'm returning it to CompUSA tomorrow but has anyone has this trouble before??

  • Sparks when plugging in ... :/

Hallo, I have had my Mac since January and since the first days every time I plug it in (either direct on the wall plug or in a extention cord) it sparkles! We thought it was the building (because it is an old building) and maybe that was the reason. But recently I plugged it in in another building (pretty new) and it still sparkles! It even damages a bit the two metal sticks (:S ) Does anybody knows the reason?
    Thanks!

I'd suggest taking advice from the guy above you horizonsites. Try plugging the charger into the wall, and then into the computer. It obviously will not spark anymore, and will not damage the plug. I do not have this problem, however I have been plugging the charger into the wall first and then into the MacBook since the day I bought it.

  • Sparks when plugging in a USB plug

I removed a USB plug from the back of my iMac to allow me to plug in my Camera USB card reader, and as the metal part of each plug touched the metal case of the iMac, there were several small sparks. My machine is connected to Earth via the mains plug. Sparks near electronic stuff is not good.
    Any ideas please?

  • Sparks when plugging in or unplugging hi-fi from wall outlet

Whenever I plug or unplug my apple hi-fi into an A/C wall outlet, there's a spark. So far, this hasn't fried my hi-fi or caused any other problems that I can detect. But it's pretty disconcerting.
I thought I would consult the collective wisdom of the ipod user community to see if any of you have thoughts, comments, or suggestions. Should I just stop worrying and learn to enjoy the little light show? Should I put a surge protector between my hi-fi and the wall outlet? Any other thoughts?
    Thanks!

Should I put a surge protector between my hi-fi and the wall outlet
My suggest is rather not, as a poor surge protector will only brings bad side effect.
I have seen this quite often in audiophile field.

  • Mag Safe power cord sparks when connected or disconnected--whereupon the MacBook Pro 13'' dumps date and time, and all passwords, plus any/all unsaved information.

I purchased my MacBook Pro 13" from the Apple Store in Tucson, AZ, in mid-January. Since then, every time the Mag-Safe cord is jostled, not even disconnected, sparks fly from the power terminal on the computer, the computer shuts down, and dumps its passwords, as well as the date and time.
Any work in progress is also lost.
I work overseas, and Apple's advice was to give them my credit card number, await shipment of a new power supply and cord, and then, when I return the old power supply and cord, i'd receive a credit. That won't work, as packages from the US to my location take weeks if they arrive at all. There is no Apple Store within a reasonable distance. Or, Apple suggests, when I'm home on leave in mid-June, I should bring the computer to the Apple Store for repair--I have only days in which to do that, but I suppose I'll need to try. My concern is that I'll need to return overseas without my computer and won't be able to retrieve it for months, until my next leave.
This issue shows up elsewhere online. Is there a short in the power terminal in the computer, or on the Mag-Safe power cord, or within the computer itself? It's a known issue, thus I wonder why it hasn't been fixed.

    Hi Lemenos,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Do you have any "hacks" installed your iBook? Try going to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter (next to Settings For:) > Processor Performance > Try faster or reduced and see if one works better. What are you doing when this happens? Do you notice any patterns? You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #17228 on Portables: Jumpy or Erratic Trackpad Operation and Knowledge Base Document #58389 on Your PowerBook and iBook's trackpad doesn't respond. Is the wall socket grounded? How can you tell if its electrical or static? What does it feel like? Try touching something metal to ground yourself before touching (bed frame) and see if you still get a shock. You should not get an electric shock from the button, if you do stop touching it. Bring it to your local Apple Store/Reseller.

  • Anyone else have iBooks crash when changing to PDF library?

Since upgrading to iOS 7, iBooks consistently crashes when I try to view my PDF collection. Books all open fine. I have restarted my iPhone, reinstalled iBooks. Has anyone else had similar trouble and, more importantly, found a solution?

I called Apple Support and they helped me resolve the issue. What needed to be done was to reinstall iOS 7 and set it up as a new iPad, do not restore from previous back-up, and then re download the iBooks App from the App Store, then go to your iTunes on your Mac or PC and go to preferences / devices - and check the box that says prevent ipods, iphones, ipad from syncing automatically. Then plug in your iPad, and when your in iTunes go to your books and check the box that says to sync selected books, and check off your PDF's you want to sync with your iPad, and then sync. The iBooks App doesn't crash anymore!!!
According to the Tech there is a glitch with the iBooks App when upgrading to iOS7.
I hope this helps and I hope I made myself clear enough. I have never responded with answers before.

  • Shutting off....only when plugged in.

I know there are a lot of posts out there about the ibook shutting off, but mine has some peculiarities I didn't see in others, so before I take my computer apart as was the conclusion here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1082138&tstart=0, I'll give this a shot.
My ibook randomly (when in use mostly but sometimes not) shuts down, though I don't think all the way. The screen goes black, and it is quieter, but there is still some sound, indicating it is on somehow. I remove the battery, unplug, wait a bit, put it back in, sometimes this works fine. Sometimes I have to repeat the process.
I should note a few things:
This ONLY happens when the power cord is plugged in.
The power cord is not made by apple, it is a replacement cord.
This started happening after buying and using a different replacement cord than the one I am currently using. This particular cord actually died on me. It still had some power, but not enough to power my ibook.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Even just what to ask if I take it to a mac place?

Do you happen to have iStatPro? It is a widget available from the Apple Web Site. I am wondering if the whirring noise you hear is your fan? Intensive applications tend to raise the temperature of everything and cause the fan to come on.
You might also put activity monitor in your dock and check the CPU usage during some of these big applications. I'm wondering if you are running it almost at its limits and it might be getting overheated and shutting down for that reason. I am not a gamer, but possibly some other member of the forum is and has experienced this phenomonon. I'm not sure of this, but I think the iBook is designed to shut itself off before incurring damage from overheating. I don't know what HD, processor, or RAM you have, but it might be helpful to post that. And also, how much free space there is on your HD. I probably can't help any more, but it might give another gamer enough information to confirm or refute my guess.
    Good luck!

  • Ethernet never works when plugged in

Ever since I got my ibook in 1/06 my ethernet has never worked when plugging in with a cable. I have tried several different cables/boxes/etc and it shows that it is connected with an IP address (when checking network status), but I cannot get on the internet. It has never been a problem before because I just use wireless instead, but now at my job my only option is plugging in. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
...but now at my job my only option is plugging in.
Does your work have a proxy server in place? If so, you may need to adjust your Network System Preferences to reflect this setting. You'll have to ask as network administrator there if this is the case and to find out what the name of the proxy server is. The Network System Preferences may very well say you have an IP address, but without the proxy settings you won't get outside of your network to the Internet.
