Ibook started on fire

Well after a good 5 years my ibook has died. Today when I tried to turn it on I saw a bunch of sparks under the case by the power button and then I saw smoke and could smell the burning plastic. I bought my self a new PC so I'm happy it could hold out that long for me. My question is, sometime ago my CD drive stopped working. I can still turn it on for small amounts of time. How do I go about getting all my info and important files off of the MAC and onto my new PC. Mainly pictures, music, and documents. Is there a way to link them without using a network?

My recommendation would be to buy an inexpensive 2.5" USB enclosure, and get your old hard drive out of that iBook and into the enclosure. That way you're not risking further calamity to yourself or the files!

I just started using fire fox and I can't figure out how to add a new folder to my bookmarks.
Can anybody explain how in detail (I'm bad with computers so I need real detail)
    Please and thank you. :)

If you use extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) like <i>Adblock Plus</i> or <i>NoScript</i> or <i>Flash Block</i> that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>Safe mode</u>:
*On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
*On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
*Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
If it works in Firefox Safe-mode then disable all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • G5 started on fire tonight

Our G5 popped and started on fire tonight. The whole room was filled with smoke. I am glad we were home. This is a serious problem. I was wondering if anyone else has had this type of problem??
I am going to take the machine to the apple store in the morning. I am worried that this might happen to others and they may not be as fortunate as we were tonight.
    Has anyone had this problem.

This is very rare, however, if the liquid cooling system (links to G5 models with liquid cooling) started to fail, it might have been a reason for that to happen. The other reasons this might happen are:
    1. Improper grounding of your electrical, and touching your computer keyboard while conencted immediately after walking across a wet rug. I did this once to a PC and it blew a capacitor.
    2. Power surges that happen because of electrical storm, or bad electricity in the home. Have an electrician check for this.
    3. Some PowerMac G5s have an Exchange/repair program for power supply issues.
    4. iMac G5s have a history of issues with capacitors for which an exchange/repair program has been instituted.
    5. Improper ventilation of the computer whether by:
    - placing it in direct sunlight any time during the day.
    - placing the computer directly on a carpeted floor.
    - placing the computer with the vents against a wall or desk with no clearence. Feel the back of the vents for hot air. If it isn't allowed to escape a far enough distance to the point the air becomes a normal temperature you may create a situation where the computer could overheat.
    6. A fan issue happens with the computer. This often can be detected by the hardware test that shipped with the computer new:

If you don't have those discs and purchased it used, get the person you bought it from to give you the discs, as they aren't their's to keep. If they lost them, have them call AppleCare for them. Otherwise if you bought the machine new, call AppleCare yourself for them. If AppleCare doesn't have the discs anymore, I would periodically have the machine checked by a service center to make sure the fans are in good working order.
    7. Also any Mac that is 4 or more years old should get its clock battery replaced every 4 years if it has one. That shouldn't cause the machine to overheat, still it is important to do.

  • My charger started on fire? I wasn't even using my phone while charging it.

My charger just started on fire and I wasn't even using my phone while it was charging.

If you do not live near an apple retail store, you should call applecare as soon as possible.  They may request photos of the area after the incident.

My charger had a melt down and nearly started a fire in the house.  Has this happen to anyone else?

Does not matter if it happened to anyone.  The fact of the matter is that it happened to YOU!
You need to report this (call) to Apple asap!!!!!

light on iphone4 flash will not turn off even when phone is powered down, now it is overheated and says not usable till cooled, but it won't cool.  I'm afraid it will start a fire.  Aside from breaking it, putting in in a metal pail in the yard, or putting it in a bucket of water, what can be done to keep it from setting a fire.  It is so hot it burns my skin if i touch it, so bright, it hurts to look at, so hot there is now a warning that it is not usable till it cools down, but there is no way to cool it down.

more info, this happened after update to 7.0.2, and also wifi will no longer turn on since update.  I took it in to apple store, it had one month left on warrenty, and they said that it would have had to get wet for this to happen.  I thought that maybe it got wet through my jeans pocket in the rain or something so I didn't pursue it.  Now of course, it is out of warranty by a month.

  • Ibook start up help please

My ibook started to go mad today! I used it for a few hours, worked fine, put it to sleep, then later picked it up, logged in fine, it worked for a few seconds and then the screen went dark blue! I could hear the fan going but nothing on display! I had to do a hard shut down a few times, did PRAM and PMU reset, fsck , same thing kept happening.
I managed to put an Tiger install disc and it started fine from it, did a disk repair - told me no repairs were necessary, repaired disk permissions, restarted, logged in, went to do a disk utility to check the permissions (just in case), then I MOVED the ibook a tiny bit and the whole screen went weird, was filled with coloured vertical lines! I just about managed to shut it down and since then I kind of start it and either get a flashing apple start up screen or no joy at all! I can hear the fan going and my Tiger disc spinning (still stuck inside and can't get it out). I tried booting every possible way, no battery just power, battery only, power and battery and got the same results.
I also tried to reinstall OSX using archive and install and the screen went blank mid installation. I was also going to do apple hardware test but could not get a Tiger disc out to try that!
Does anyone know what could be the problem?
My ibook is out of warranty and I sadly have no apple care. I got my ibook in September 2005.

A dead hard drive would be better than a fried logic board. You could replace the hard drive yourself if you had the tiny screwdrivers and a lot of patience.
I'm on the second hard drive with my iBook G4, and that one is dying now.
However, the symptoms you were describing sound a lot more serious than a dead hard drive - unfortunately....
The good news is that the MacBook is a lot more durable than the iBooks were. My son has had his since they came out, and he's dropped it on the floor from his bed. The case is chipped a bit and there's a big space on the case, where there shouldn't be. He takes it to his friend's house without protection, in the rain and snow... just tucks it under his arm. He leaves it on his bed, where the cats take naps on top of it. He tosses it into his bookbag with the rest of his college textbooks and throws the bookbag into the back seat of his car. I can't believe it's still working!
I baby my iBook G4 and have nothing but trouble with it. Go figure!

  • HT5071 Exported iBook starting page?

When I export my ebook from iBooks Author and open it on my iPad, it starts on a random page instead of the first page.  Any idea how to fix this?

An ibook file, of your design via IBA, when previewed and then used, will open to either the beginning or the last page you were on.
Is that not what you're seeing?

  • Why has my iBook started to completely shuts down when power runs out?

I purchased my iBook G4 in early 2006 (OSX 10.4.11)
Until last week, I would regularly use my laptop until the battery charge was used up. I would get a low charge warning and it would automatically sleep. I could then plug it in to charge. When it was plugged in, I could touch the track pad or power button and all of the programs that were open when the power ran out would be there, just as I left them.
This has recently changed. Now when the power runs out, I receive the same low charge message, but instead of sleeping, my computer completely shuts down. When I press the power button to reboot, everything starts back up fine, but I get a message that my date and time are off and need to be reset. I then go to the Date and Time menu, which automatically updates through my wireless connection.
    My questions are:
    1. Why is it shutting down instead of sleeping?
    2. Why is my date and time reseting to an incorrect date and time?

The difference is that in the past, your battery shut the computer down when their was enough juice to safely sleep the machine. Now it thinks it has enough juice, but it's truly running out. The battery is necessary to maintain the date and time in the computer.
Your battery needs to be calibrated. You should follow the instructions at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1959.html
This will allow the battery to truly know how much juice it has left.

  • IBook start up problems

My ibook (2001, 15" screen,) has problems starting up.
I am I am travelling at the moment, so I don't have access to the OS X CD's.
Is there anyway I can download/get a copy of OS X disk utility cd's online. I am UK/London based.

I ran disk utility, but I think I need to run repair from the OS X CD's.
At startup/use I have the following problems, which are intermittent:
    1. screen doesn't start up, although all the correct startup noises happen
    2. screen starts up, but only as far as the grey screen and then freezes
    3. screen freezes once started up and logged in, after 30 mins use
I'm not sure if this is an OS problem, or not....I bought a new HD for the iBook about 5 months ago.
I seemed to somehow get rid of the initial total freeze by holding down apple V once I had hit the power button, where I got a whole load of screen text, but then this froze as well. However when I then restarted it did actually start up and enable me to use the computer fairly normally for a while

  • Ibook - Start up problem at spining wheel

I have seen several posts on this issue but im still having problems. The problem I believe occured during the update of OS X (100+mb file) I think the 10.3.4 , all of a sudden the screen went crazy and was showing colorful horizontal lines. I went ahead and re started, the display turned on just fine but it is stuck on the spinning wheel. I ran the first aid app. and it said it repaired it but it is still stuck on the wheel. I saw on another post to boot in safe mode, but it doesnt allow me to do that either. Is there a fix for this? Is there a way to back up all my important info and software? Thanks in advanced...

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of last year. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.

  • IBook start-up issues

First, our iBook hit the floor hard and I had to restart a couple of times before it would function properly. It was fine for a week or so, then just froze up one morning. I shut down via the power key and restarted. It seemed fine, but then my wife called and said it was frozen again. When I shut it down and restarted, it wouldn't make it past the screen with the Apple logo. Tried holding the shift key down while starting and it made it to the desktop before locking up. Now the weird part. The longer it sits with the power off. the longer it will run when I power it up. Overnight is best, I can get 3-4 minutes of use before the whole thing locks up. If I shut it down and then immediately try to start again, it will not make it past the logo screen or the next one "Starting Mac OS". Booting from the DVD drive does not make any difference. I have rescued some files from it. but the bigger ones are too large to complete a transfer before it locks up. Any ideas out there? At the very least I would like to get all of our iPhoto pics out, but there are too many to do before it freezes. It would be great to get it working again, but I'm not sure it will happen.

I can't offer you a lot of help, but thought I could offer you some hope. Mine has taken three (if you can believe it) hard falls and survived. I did have to take it in one time and have it repaired, but it still works. I did want to suggest a couple of things: open it up and make sure the Ram did not dislodge. Then try connecting it to another computer with a firewire cable and starting it in Target mode. That's what I did and I was able to get everything off. Good luck!

  • IBook starts up with a beep, no video

    Hello,
I recently encountered another problem with my iBook G3. A few days ago it stopped showing video and now starts up with a single beep I take to mean "no RAM installed" from the support page. Luckily it came back to life briefly after I reset the parameter RAM so I was able to back up most of my stuff. Now, nothing is working from the Apple help for no video (resetting the PMU, starting up from disc, external screen, removing the RAM I installed). I will try contacting Apple again, but this computer is well out of the 3-year Applecare I bought. I had the logic board replaced about a year and a half ago, but this beep thing is worrying. Does this sound like the typical logic board problem again or perhaps a dead hard drive?
    Thanks for your help!
    iBook 800 MHz G3 w/serial number of death   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Ronda,
Thanks very much for your reply. I explained my problem and everything I did to try to fix it to Applecare US on Sunday, and they authorized an extention to my warranty to make the repair. I am counting my lucky stars about now. Yeah Apple! Hopefully this fix will last awhile, but in the meantime I will back up regularly and starting saving my pennies for a new iBook!
    Cheers,
    Brenda
Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is not the fault in the logic board that was
    covered by the iBook
Logic Board Repair Extension Program. However, it
does sound like the memory that is soldered to the
logic board has failed. This means you will need a
    new logic board.
Here in the United States, I know of places that will
repair it for $195 plus shipping, but I don't know of
any inexpensive repair places in the UK.
Your "serial number of death" isn't, really. The
program was gradually expanded to include all the
Dual USB G3 iBooks, so every serial number is
    included in the program.
If it turns out to be an expensive repair, maybe the
money would be better spent on a new iBook?
