IBook suddenly won't work on battery

My iBook has suddenly stopped working on its battery.
Whilst switched off, the battery catch opened and the battery slipped out. I put it back and tightened the catch. From that point on, the computer has refused to start up unless the power adaptor is plugged in.
The battery indicator bar on the Desktop constantly displays the word "Calculating", but never comes up with a charge time. The battery itself is fully charged, as all the LEDs are lighting up when the battery charge button in depressed. If I take the power lead out when the computer is up and running, the computer shuts down instantly.
I have tried resetting the Power Management Unit, but it has made no difference.
Any help would be much appreciated to fix what has been up until now a flawless computer....
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB RAM (factory fitted)/Battery replaced under iBook battery replacement scheme

Hi, Dean. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I've been visiting Apple Discussions for over three years now, and every update brings a few people here to say, "The update hosed my battery." It's nearly always just a coincidence. The battery was probably ready to go.
According to the Washington Post, the typical lifespan of a lithium-ion battery is two to three years (whether it is used or not). Apple warranties the battery for one year.
The following comes from an old Apple Knowledge Base article regarding an X through the battery icon in PowerBooks. I've adapted it a bit to try it on an iBook. It probably won't help, but it shouldn't hurt to try:
In some cases, the battery has gone into a deep discharge state. This situation may arise if the battery has been left in the computer for an extended period of time without AC power. The battery can discharge to a point where it is no longer recognized by the PowerBook as evidenced by the red X through the battery icon in the menu bar.
To help prevent this situation, try these suggestions:
Recharge the battery when only one of the four green LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) on the battery is on, or shows one green LED blinking.
If the PowerBook is not going to be used for an extended period of time, fully charge the battery and then remove it from the PowerBook for storage.
If you have a battery that is not recognized in the menu bar while inserted, the following steps provide sufficient charge to the battery to restore normal operation.
1. Insert the battery and leave it there for approximately 30 seconds.
2. After 30 seconds, remove the battery.
3. Leave the battery out for several seconds then reinsert it for another 30 second interval.
Depending on the charge level of the battery, you may need to reinsert the battery 10 to 12 times. If this corrects the problem so that the X no longer appears in the menu bar with the battery inserted, allow the battery to fully charge.
Good luck.

  • My iphone 4 'phone app' suddenly won't work

My iphone 4 'phone app' suddenly won't work. It's not a microphone or other hardware problem because I can use viber normally. I have already upgraded to iOs 6.1.2 from a 5.1 (when the problem started), and even after the restore it still won't work.

This is asked and answered multiple times daily.
If you've tried a restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new as recommended in the User Guide and this fails to solve your problem, then you have a hardware failure and will need to bring your phone into Apple for replacement.

  • ITunes search function suddenly won't work, pending iTunes upgrade.

I have an old (2002) 16-bit PC, which won't support an iTunes upgrade. I've tried to upgrade (from 7.1) before, but it crashed the machine (and I lost ALL my music), so I've stayed with 7.1 and until now everything -- including the iTunes store and the search function -- has worked just fine.  But suddenly, when I go to the iTunes store to buy new music, it presents an "Upgrade to iTunes 10" screen, and the search function won't work at all.  I'm locked out until I upgrade, but I can't upgrade.  Help?

Your QT may work fine but is it the most current v7.1.3? This is not to say that this will resolve your problem. You might try to d/l the 10.4.6 combo update and reinstall the upgrade to the system. That might resolve the problem.
I would wait until the new year and then upgrade to iLife07. No sense in buying 06 if 07 is around the corner.
You can downgrade to an earlier version of an app. To downgrade iTunes you would need to remove the receipt from HD>Library>Receipts>iTunesX.pkg. You will also need the .dmg of the version you want to reinstall. Old iTune versions are avalable at http://www.oldapps.com/downloadiTunesmac.php
You can get old iPhoto at http://www.oldapps.com/iPhoto.php - instructions here http://www.oldapps.com/forum/showthread.php?p=545
To downgrade your OS you will need to reload the original OS from the system disks that you have then upgrade to the level that you want.
    As always b/u before proceeding.

  • Sudden shutdown when working on battery mode, clock reset

    Hi
i am running windows 7 32 bit on an HP dv6970ej (dv6000) and my problem is sudden power failures when working on battery.
my first battery was worn out a few months ago and so I replaced it (with an HP original). it worked fine for a while but lately when I am working on battery mode the system shuts down with no warning.
the thing is that when I plug it back to the AC the battery is almost full - 85%-90% charged.
also - the last few times the power went down the clock was reset. i replaced the BIOS little battery but that didn't seem to make much difference.
i also tried to update the BIOS, didn't change anything.
the main issue of course is the system shutting down unexpectedly, while the battery is obviously still holding charge.
    any suggestions?

the clock reset is just a side effect of the main issue - system power failure. as long as there are no sudden shutdowns the clock is saved. plus i guess i am not gonna replace the whole motherboard so that's why i am less concerned about that.
what really bugs me is not having the ability to disconnect the computer from the AC for more that a few minutes. sometimes it shuts down after two minutes, sometimes after 10-15 min.
i am thinking- maybe it has anything to do with voltage drops or something like that or incorrect reading of the battery, because as i said - when i plug it back in - in indicates 80%-90% charge level.
I also ran a diagnostic on the battery's wear level. the old battery was definitely worn out, but the current one seems to be OK on that aspect.

  • Brand new macbook air charger suddenly won't work

I bought a new macbook about four weeks ago. Everything is in great shape, inlcuding the charger. It suddenly didn't work yesterday. I've tried some of the troubleshooting stuff, nothing is working. Any ideas?

Failure to wake from sleep is not normal regardless of the Energy Saver settings.
The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • 3rd party apps suddenly won't work

This happened to me before but it was a long time ago and I don't remember what the fix was. Suddenly all my 3rd party apps refuse to run. They come up for a second then quit. I tried a hard reset but no luck. Anybody got any ideas. I'm still on OS 3.1

I installed an update for one of my apps from the app store and suddenly everything's working again.

  • Jbuilder suddenly won't work

    Hello,
After using Jbuilder X Foundation happily for several weeks it suddenly refused to work this afternoon. The problem seems to be that it can no longer open/display files. When launched from the command prompt, a number of NullPointerExeptions occur. These are in the form
    "Null pointerExeption at com.borland.primetime......"
I haven't listed the whole thing as I've already searched pretty hard on the www, and this string seems not to appear any where obvious. (or not obvious as it goes)
Initially I thought it was something silly that I did, and have tried pretty much everything I can think of. New install of both JBXF and the SDK from sun, even update install of Windows. But no, what to do?
If anyone here has experience of this or ideally a sollution, I'd be greatfull.
Yours kindly (with a classpath intact)
    Adam Green

    Nope, it's not having it...
Instead, I've switched to JBuilder 9 personal, and it's fine.

  • Ipod suddenly won't work with an FM transmitter

I have an iTrip that I used successfully plenty of times with my nano. I haven't used it in a year or so, but now when I plugged it into my ipod, the ipod says "FireWire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided. Press Center to dismiss."
In the year or so that I didn't use the iTrip, my ipod froze and I had to reset it, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Anyone know why I'm getting that message now saying my iTrip won't work, when it did before? Thanks much!

If that doesn't work try this it just worked for me as i was having the same issue.
    1) Plug the Nano into the airplay and tune to the station
    2) When everything is set up, reset the Nano (hold down Menu and Select at the same time until it reboots)
    3) enjoy the music

  • Nano Suddenly Won't Work.

My iPod Nano (7th gen.) won't connect to iTunes anymore. I just started having this problem last week. A message pops up saying that an unrecognized iPod has been found. Please unplug it and plug back in. If it continues, to uninstall iTunes and reinstall. I did all that, and it still continued. So I searched on here for some other things and found to do something in my control panel. I tried that and it still won't work. I've added new music and like to use my iPod everywhere. The only way to listen to the newer music is by my laptop now. Also was wondering if it had anything to do with the Windows 8.1 update? Because it wasn't synced to my laptop since January. I tried last week (which was soon after my laptop had updated 8.1) and then it did this? Is it not supported or what? Please help!!!

You might need to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service, as described in ituem #3 at the bottom of this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538.  If that doesn't resolve it, try uninstalling iTunes and all of its components as by following this guide exactly: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923, then reinstall iTunes.  You must follow this guide exactly or it will not be successful.  Note: uninstalling iTunes will only remove the application; it will not touch your iTunes library or data.

  • Won't work without battery?

If my battery drains during sleep, it won't power up until the battery regains sufficient charge. Even if I remove the battery and try to run on AC alone, it still won't power up.
Once it's working, I can remove the battery while it's running and use AC alone.
Is this typical of a Mac?

    jjooee wrote:

I've definitely seen machines where if the battery is depleted (or near depleted) they wouldn't power on until a couple minutes worth of charge was sent through the battery cells. I've seen Windows laptops (Dell, Toshiba, Acer) do the same thing.
However, if you remove the battery and the machine is capable of being run without a battery installed (which is 99% of most modern portables), then there should be no problems starting up. Unless of course the issue with your portable is related to a low level power management function (namely related to the SMC). You can try resetting that (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964), otherwise I suspect there might be a hardware issue involved.

  • Reader X suddenly won't work

Suddenly, Reader X (10.1.2) does not work on my XP-Pro SP3 machine (it worked fine until today). I have uninstalled Reader, downloaded and reinstalled it from your site: same issue. I can open the program (interestingly, task manager shows two lines saying AcroRd32.exe, one using 7Mb memory, the other at 16Mb). But when I open a file from the program, or if I start the program by selecting a .pdf file, I get the “Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close” message.  My .pdf files seem to correctly associate themselves to the Reader program. I have “repaired” the program from the Help tab. What to do next?

You may want to try running this fix from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall and uninstall all traces of any versions of Reader. If you want to reinstall Reader, download its full installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

  • Images in slideshow became BROKEN CHAINS. Suddenly won't work. Please Help!

I need to give this iDVD to my friend who's leaving the country TODAY. Your help is much appreciated:
I made the DVD and it was all running smoothly and seemed to burn OK, but when it was done burning most of the pictures (but not all) in the slideshows turned into a broken chain with black and yellow stripes on the top and bottom. Why did this happen?? I don't know why they became this, there was no problem before. Some of the pictures are OK, seems random.
If you could tell me how to get my pictures back to replace these broken chains so I can reburn the DVD where all the pictures work. Please Help!

Yeah I realized I had moved images to a different folder. I moved them back and am burning a new DVD right now. Thanks for the quick response & have a great day! :]

  • IPod 80GB buttons suddenly won't work

iPod only 2-1/2 years old, and all of a sudden, the menu, select and play buttons don't do anything. The click wheel still spins up and down song list though.
It seems to be only any button that needs to press down that isn't working.

    Hello Jerry,
So you are unable to try and do a simple reset of the device? To do this, toggle the *Hold Switch* on and off. Then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Otherwise, i would try connecting your iPod to your computer where you can try and do a full restore of it via iTunes.
