IBook suffering from 'insomnia'

My iBook is no longer going to sleep when the lid is closed. I haven't changed any settings on my computer...the latch is still working on the lid... It just happened yesterday for the first time so I turned it off before bed, hoping the reset would help. But alas, today still no luck...
IBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Katherine,
It sounds like your reed switch isn't working. If you'd like to read more about the reed switch, check out this link:

  • My i7 macbook pro suffers from insomnia

My old C2D macbook never slept, although I had the energy settings set to sleep after 10min of inactivity.
I recently bought a new i7 macbook pro and used the migration assistant to transfer the settings to my new laptop. I soon realized that it also suffers from the same disease, so I guess there is a setting or preference that was transferred and is causing the problem.
I originally suspected that dropbox is the problem, but I have the same symptom, even when dropbox is not running.
Can anybody help me identify what the problem is?
    Thanks a lot!

Have you called Apple technical help? I had a few issues recently that didn't even involve Apple but it was software allowing me to use external hard drives with no partitions on Mac and PC. It was 3rd party software and they figured it out as well as giving me all the sites I needed to get it all working. I have had other questions as well and they seem to work on it until it is figured out.

  • Help! powerbook won't go to sleep...suffering from insomnia

    Hey all,
recently i noticed my powerbook has not been going to sleep. i've reset pram, nvram, open firmware, repaired disk permissions, ran cron scripts the whole 9 yards. I checked system logs and i get this:
    Description: System events log
    Size: 86 bytes
    Last Modified: 12/8/05 9:37 AM
    Location: /var/log/system.log
Recent Contents: Dec 8 09:37:20 P12 cp: error processing extended attributes: Operation not permitted
it seems the powerbook does try to go to sleep but Tiger won't allow it, anyone know whats going on?. Any help is appreciated, thanx in advance

Well, if you are sure its a warranty issue they will not charge you once the issue is resolved. But from what you have said it seems to be software related. I am at a loss what to suggest (sorry). The only last thing I'd say to check is the following:
    1) Make sure your folder actions are off in the Finder. Control click on desktop and the menu should read "Enable Folder Actions." If it says Disable I'd say try it.
    2) Try logging into a new "clean" new user account (after logging out of yours) and see if the machine will sleep then. If it does look at the StartUp items for your user.

I think the McAfee suite will do the trick when I pay them a one-time fee of $69 or $179 for a year for unlimited support.
Your call of course but IMO a waste of money. Please read this first:
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac has NOT been infected by a virus, it may have another security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • Is there a way to prevent ibooks author from shutting down after just one or two uses of the alpha tool?

Is there a way to prevent ibooks author from shutting down after just one or two uses of the alpha tool?

Hello One Job at a time,
Deleting the application will not delete your projects.
Normally I keep all my work files on a separate drive.
If you command click on the title name of your project you will get a drop down path to show you the location of your book project.
or you can click on the drop down triangle beside its name to duplicate.
Just remember where you saved the file too.
In your applications folder on your computer select the iBA icon and press delete and also erase / empty the trash can.
You can then go back to the APP STORE and install iBA from new again.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards,

  • Can't transfer iBooks pdfs from first gen iPad to new MacBook Pro

I have a bunch of important pdf files on a first gen iPad (iOS 5.1.1) that I want to transfer to iBooks in a 13" MacBook Retina.
In iTunes, choosing Devices >Transfer Purchases from My iPad isn't moving them over. I've been able to transfer all the non iBooks pdfs from GoodReader, etc. In iTunes, I can see them in the Books section of "On This iPad" but can't do anything but view info.
In iBooks, choosing File >Move Books from iTunes isn't doing it either.
Syncing warns me that it's going to delete the iPad files.
I'd rather not pay for 3rd party software if I can avoid it.
    Thanks.

No they're not in the iTunes library. Purchased titles transferred and a few other things but a bunch of DRM-free pdfs and DRM-free EPUBS won't Budge.
"Or you don't see them with the iPad connected to the Mac, with iTunes running, the iPad selected under devices and then look in the books tab of iTunes on the right?"...
No. However, if I go a couple tabs further to the right, to "On This iPad" and select Books in the left column, they're all listed. I just can't do anything but view their info or rate them.

  • I previously owned an iPad. I want to restore my iBook collection from my iPad to my Macbook. I can only see my collections but not the books. How can I restore it from my iPad backup?

I prevsiouly owned an Ipad. Before selling it, I backup it on my Macbook. When the new Mavericks has been released, i upgraded my Mac. Now that I have iBooks on my Mac, I want to restore my iBook collection from my previous Ipad to my Mac. On my Mac, I can only see the iBooks collection of my previous iPad but not the books that I have purchased. I probably had more than a hundred books on my collection (in epub and pdf formats). I have already tried transferring purchases in iTunes and adding to my Library but to no avail.
Can anyone give me a solution to this.

Restore as a NEW device to test. If this solves it, that means there is some corruption in your backup file, or maybe it's one of your apps causing the trouble. If the problem is still there, you should take it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • Aren't iPods suffering from overprotection?

I see new skins, cases, protecting films and other accessories to wrap and protect iPods being advertised almost daily. On the other side, there are thousands of posts of users in many different discussion forums who are extremely afraid of getting their iPods scratched or dirty. I myself have bought a few of these accessories. I now have my iPod wrapped in a silicon skin that protects it and was certainly helpful the only time I dropped it, but on the other hand my iPod doesn't fit my pocket anymore, cannot be connected to the dock, and looks different from what it was conceived to look like (I miss its original face). OK, maybe the surface is easily scratchable, but aren't iPods suffering from a severe case of overprotection? All right, it is a pricy item, it is extremely valuable once your entire music library is in it - but maybe iPods were originally conceived to carry all the owner's marks acquired due to regular intended use - like all of us grow old and gray and collect a few wrinkles and spots in the process. Maybe iPods were meant to be scratched, dirtied and marked - iPods actually are sturdier than most of their owners think. And above all, the iPod design is so attractive that any iPod looks infinitely better without all those things hanging from or attached to it. I daresay iPods actually ARE suffering from a most severe case of overprotection - at least mine is. A new case for psychoanalysis?

What a great topic for discussion!
I too am feeling a sort of angst concerning the protection of my new 60Gb iPod. On the recommendation of an Apple store employee, I purchased an iSkin rubberized case, which came with a screen protector and a clickwheel protector. Now the rubberized menace collects dust and hair like a magnet, and refuses to fit in any car holder I attempt to purchase for it. As for carrying cases, I spent quite some time searching through iPod cases, digital camera cases, "stuff sacks" etc. I found a Case Logic case that actually will fit the iPod with iSkin on it, and comes with a detachable armband... nice.
Regarding psychoanalysis, the question is, is it reasonable to want to protect something that initially costs a small fortune, you spend hours ripping/buying your music collection to, and use to rediscover your love of music? I say of course! Now, the lengths that we go to... that's more complicated. I admit that the iSkin is a bit of a drastic measure, and I kind of wish I had seen the Pod Shield before ordering the iSkin, but alas... I shall overcome.
As a side matter, why does EVERYTHING that accessory makers come out with have to be named iSomething. I know that Apple is the trend-setter here, but must everyone follow ad-nauseum??
    Now, for your amusement:

  • IBook leeching from neighbor

I got a Mac mini. The airport kept dropping its connection every so often for no reason at all. My husband installed a new Belkin wireless router and set it with WEP security. The Mini is working great! No more drops at all for the past two weeks. But... now every time my iBook wakes from sleep, for some reason it is losing its wireless connection and when it wakes it connect to my neighbors wifi. I can get it to connect to my wifi, but I have to go in and manually select it. Which is a pain when I am trying to network to it from the other machine in the other room.
Did we fix the airport on one machine only to screw it up on the other? Any ideas? Thanks.

Something changed. My Mini was dropping Airport connection to internet sometimes every two minutes. As soon as I stopped using the internet (and sometimes while using it, but just pausing) I would get dropped. Though it would still show that I was connected and had four bars.
Also, there is a Palm device in the house that required that as it security. It isn't a big issue. We live in the middle of nowhere, literally a big valley in the middle of nowhere Montana, and the two houses that are near us that have wireless internet are wide open, they were the ones that I was unintentionally leeching from and seriously not the kind of people that know much more than how to use Facebook to talk to their kids, much less hack me. We mostly had it to keep a foreign exchange student we had from being on all night long. But she was leeching from the neighbors all night anyway. Hahaha....
It seems that the Mini wanted some kind of security though because when we tried leaving it open, it kept dropping too. So... it is a mini issue that a lot of people have had with its airport, maybe just coincidence this worked. I dunno. Thanks.

I tightened all HD screws and it didn't help. With the machine running and side of the case off, I physically stopped both the video card fan and the front case fan with my finger for a couple seconds and the noise continued. I also took all hard drives out one by one and rebooted each time. Again, the noise continued until I took out the Mac HD in Bay 1, rebooted, and I had a very quiet, silent machine. The issue is the hard drive in bay 1 that shipped with the computer, it's without a doubt causing the hum/woosh sound. I still need to know if I can safely swap the Mac HD from bay 1 to bay 4 without any issues to the operating system. I would like to try that to see if it dampens the noise but I also want to make sure this swap won't screw up my machine at all.

  • Is Your Footage Suffering from the Massive Difference in Export Quality Between FCPX

I read this article today and considering I do all my rendering through Premiere or AME it made me a little concerned. What does Adobe think of this? and has any else experienced this problem?
    Cheers,
    Moja.
I took this article from: Is Your Footage Suffering from the Massive Difference in Export Quality Between FCPX & Premiere?
A rational person might assume that the program from which you export your media wouldn't have a noticeable impact on the quality of the final image, especially if the export settings are identical in both programs. A recent test by filmmaker Noam Kroll might just teach us to think twice before making assumptions.
First, a little bit of background on Kroll's test. Having noticed that exporting from Adobe Media Encoder yielded quicker results than using the same settings and exporting from FCPX, he tended to use Media Encoder for the bulk of his exporting. When a recently exported project came out with some nasty compression artifacts, blocky rendering of certain areas, and a noticeable change in color quality, Kroll put on his detective's hat and tried exporting again from FCPX. To his, and soon to be your, surprise, the exported result from FCPX yielded significantly higher image quality with the EXACT same export and compression settings.
Don't believe it? Have a look for yourself. According to Kroll, "both FCP X and Premiere Pro were set to output a high quality H.264 file at 10,000 kbps." The image on top was exported from FCPX and the bottom was exported from Premiere Pro.
    Exported from FCPX
    Exported from Premiere Pro
In the shots above, you'll notice more blocky compression artifacts in the version exported from Premiere, especially on the lower part of the woman's face, and there's a fairly significant reddish hue that's been introduced into the midtones and shadows of the Premiere export. Here's a version of the same shot that is cropped in on the woman's face by 400%. This is where the difference between the two starts to become painfully obvious. Again, FCPX is on top, and Premiere on the bottom.
    Exported from FCPX
    Exported from Premiere Pro
Here's the conclusion that Kroll came to in his post.
After seeing this I can confidently say that I will not be compressing to H.264 using Premiere Pro or Adobe Media Encoder any more. [sic] The image from Premiere is so much blockier, less detailed, and muddy looking, not to mention that the colors aren’t at all accurate. In fact I even did another output test later on with Premiere Pro set to 20,000 kbps and FCP X only set to 10,000 kbps and still the FCP X image was noticeably higher quality, so clearly something is up.
It's really difficult to speculate as to what's going on behind the scenes that's causing such a drastic difference in results between the two programs. However, what is clear is that you should take caution when exporting to h.264 from Premiere and Media Encoder. Regardless of the program that you're using, perform your own tests and make sure that the export process is leaving your media with a visual quality appropriate for the delivery medium.
The good news here is that Adobe is extremely receptive to feedback from their user base, and their Creative Cloud subscription model allows them to roll out updates with a much higher frequency than they could with the boxed version of the Creative Suite. If more people are experiencing these problems and reporting it to Adobe, chances are that we'll see an update with fixes sometime in the near future. With that said, I have no idea how Adobe handles the technical process of exporting, so it could very well take a complete overhaul of how the program encodes h.264 to fix the problem.

Well, I did my own little comparison with a shot from my A7s (XAVCS 50mbps) and seeing as I don't have FCP X I used FCP 7. The AME H264 looks nicer than the FCP one in this instance.

  • My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update

My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update. It ran beta 5 great but failed on restart after beta 6 install. There is no cursor but I can hear the HDD spooling up. I have tried booting in safe mode, PRAM reset and SMC reset but nothing works. After the first 5 days of every now and then trying to start it, it started fine. I used the machine all day with no problems, it had rolled back the install and was back on beta 5. I decided to try the update again, the same thing happened and it has stayed black for over a week now. It wont work with a monitor either. Help!

    Hello Adam,
I would try instead of installing the beta software, to install the official build of OS X Yosemite from the Mac App Store to see if that gets you passed the no video issue when updating the beta software.
