IBook Tangarine with a cd/DVD combo drive.

Hi,
I've recently see on the UK Ebay site a Tangarine iBook, where the seller has upgraded it somewhat and put in a CD/DVD combo drive. (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8802810218&sspagename=ADME% 3AL%3ARTQ%3AUK%3A1&rd=1)
I contacted the guy to ask him what the make and model of the drive was and he told me it was a Toshiba SD-C2502 drive. He said that you need to use F12 to open it and hasn't mentioned if it has suffered from any cosmetic damage.
I have a Blueberry iBook and I'm interested in upgrading it to have a cd/DVD combo to watch DVDs on. I've previously put in a 60Gb hard drive using the wonderful instructions recommended by users her from PBFixit.
Is this feasible and has anyone done that before? If so can you tell me whether it's wrth the effort?

Hi ScoringSkins -
It is possible to install a DVD drive in your clamshell. However, there have been reported problems with using Apple's DVD Player (in OS X) to view the DVD's because it requires the Rage128 or later graphics chip. There are other players that will do the job.
Check out the drive database on the site www.xlr8yourmac.com for drive compatibilities and optional DVD players.

    Hi Steve,
No-one bothers with Combos these days as Superdrives (DVD burning) are quite cheap.
I replaced in my eMac a Combo, originally a Pioneer drive with a Pioneer Super DVD 109 8X DVD-R/RW drive from OWC. It works great.
The current model is a DVR - 115 D but is essentially the same and would suit your model.
    https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/powermac/
    Installing it was easy.
Remove the shell, and carefully disconnect the power wire.
Remove the screws that hold the optical drive, slide it out and install the new one.
    No software drivers are needed.

Most of the readers of the "Older Hardware Products" section have some familiarity with products pre-1997. Your eMac is positively modern by comparison.
You would get more readers, and therefore be more likely to get better advice, on the eMac forums:

  • Burning iDVD to DVD disc with i Book G4 combo drive and external DVD drive

7/6/2006. After much recent experimentation with iLife, iMovie and iDVD, I found how to use themes and set up movies in my iBook G4 purchased two years ago near Chicago (updated to OS 10.3.9). To burn an iDVD file to a DVD disc on a "combo drive" (that is, it has no DVD writer drive) iBook or other comparable Mac, go to File on the top horizontal tool bar and down there to "burn to DiscImage." Depending on the size of the file, it will take about four hours for every hour of movie file to encode it. I just set it up that night, went to bed and woke up the next morning with it finished. Once encoded, it doesn't need to be encoded again and can be used in the future. But Toast 7 Titanium will not burn it to an external DVD writer as "video." but it will burn the video file as "data." And pretty fast. The 'data' file still remains a video file and will do everything the video file does, only now from an external round DVD disc, too. I discovered this by accident, although Matt (tech support) reminded me about DiscImage. Later, David (also in tech support) told me to download newer versions of iDVD and iMovie, but that did not work, nor had he ever tried it. Remember for a combo drive and using iDVD, and also iMovie, under File burn to DiscImage and save on an external disc as "data." My external DVD write is by LaCie. Best wishes. Like altero said, you're not using Toast properly... Follow these directions:
Suggest you create a disc image from iDVD and then burn the DVD. In iDVD: File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

if it is from the T400, T500 or W500 then it is compatible with the X200 ultrabase.

  • CD/DVD combo drive ejects CDs-but only specific ones !!

    hi all,
I have the following problem with my mac mini:
a)when I enter any movie DVD, it is either ejected in a few minutes, or worse, it just sits in the Drive,(no mounting on the Desktop) and I have to restart (w/ mouse button pressed to eject)
b)any movie CD I enter (recently got brand new PoC-DMC; so no scratches etc on it too) same as (a) above
c)Insert the "Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and Apple Hardware Test" DVD (that came originally with my mac mini), and same as (a) above
d)However, insert the Mac OS X Tiger Upgrade DVD and it WORKS!!!
As of writing this, both Disk Utility and Sys Profiler have hung up. though had the same problem as mentioned above yesterday too, and then Sys Profiler was listing the combo-drive, and Disk utility was not. (as per what i read on some other posts in this forum, that would be proper behavior by the system)
Would appreciate any insights into this.
    Thanks

Is there any other means of resetting a hardware
    optical drive??
I'm not confident this will work but it's worth a try, it certainly won't damage your machine. Boot into Open Firmware ("Command + Option + O + F" on startup chime) and run 'reset-nvram' followed by 'reset-all'. Then boot into OS X by typing 'mac-boot'.
If this doesn't work boot into Open Firmware again and run 'eject cd' followed by 'mac-boot'.
You could also try forcing OS X to accept that the drive isn't in use by following the instructions here, however they do assume that a disk is stuck in the drive.

  • Won´t accept CD-R, but works fine with DVD (Combo-Drive)

    Hi there,
my emac got stuck after using a audio-CD with a little scratch. After restart I introduced normal CD-R, but they just got ejected by themselves after a few strange noises and about 5 seconds. I put in the MAC OS X start-up DVD, and it worked perfectly.
The question is: is there anything I could do, besides upgrading my eMAC after all to a Superdrive?
Doing some reliable(?) Internet research, it looks, that that can´t be too hard, and my warranty has expired anyway. So the second question goes:
Which brands and models are working fine? (Looks like Pioneer does, but only them?)
    Thanks a lot,
    Daniel.

    Hi,
I had the same problem on my 14 month old (under-used!) 1.25 combo, would read dvd fine but not cd-rw, I tried a cleaning disc and even took out drive to blow out any possible dust! still no luck.
I then decided to go superdrive and put in a Pioneer 110D cd/dvd burner as this seemed the popular choice, I found installation easy, I left the jumper on back of cd burner on 'CS' as my original one was set to that. I then fired up emac and installed 'Patchburn 3' software patch available as a download from the internet to finish the installaton. So far it all seems ok!

  • Qosmio G10-133 Question about DVD COMBO Drive replacement

    Hi
my laptop has a DVD driver labled UJ-830B but the device managaer reports that it is a UJ-830S. I have posted before saying I haven't been able to burn DVDs. It gets part way through then errors out saying unable to burn. I have used various software and disc makes but all to no avail.
I purchased an external burner which burns no problems, however it does defeat the object of having one built into the lapotop!!!
Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement drive? I have already tried an NEC 5540A drive, but my laptop didn't recognise that it was installed. I assume it is something to do with Master/Slave?? If the laptop doesn't recognise the drive I am obviously unable to flash any firmware.
    Somebody please help.....

    Hi
Seems you have already noticed that the drive replacement is not so easy.
The internal notebook drives dont support any jumpers like the external drives for desktop PCs and the settings are fixed and in my knowledge not changeable
I found some compatible drives numbers but unfortunately, I did not find the drive names.
It seems this are any internal part numbers.
    DVD Super Multi Drive
    - MATSU****A (G8CC00021610) UJ830
    - MATSU****A (G8CC0001S610)
DVD Super Multi Drive (supporting Double-Layer)
    - MATSU****A (G8CC00021611)
    - TEAC (G8CC00024611)
However, the service partner could provide you a information about compatible drive.

  • Installing xp with an external dvd cd drive

My intel imac internal cd drive has stopped working and is too expensive to repair. I have just purchased an lg gp08 external drive to replace it.
I have OSX 10.5.6, I have successfully used Boot Camp Assistant to create a boot camp partition. When Boot Camp Assistant asks me to insert the Windows XP Installer disc, I do so, and then the then click continue where my computer restarts. I know this is where I should be restarting in my BootCamp partition and XP should start installing. However, the first time I tried, the computer just sat at the beginning screen with the gray background and the apple logo in the middle of the screen for about 15 minutes. I turned the computer off and when I restarted, the Apple logo started alternating between a question mark, a file folder, a circle with a line through it (like the no smoking sign without the cigarette in it) and the apple. I know this means the computer is looking for a hard drive. I pressed the alt/option button which did nothing, so I restarted again and pressed the alt/control button and was allowed to select the Mac HD, but it does not show any other HD that I can select. When I am back in Leopard, I can still see the partitioned hard drive, but I can not get the computer to restart and begin the installation of XP. I have read in several places that Boot Camp Assistant should ask me what HD to install Windows on, but I have never seen that screen, it just restarts the computer immediately when I press continue. I have also tried to do with while pressing 'C' to force the computer to read the external CD drive, but that gives the same result. Is this a problem with me using an external CD drive instead of my internal one?
If I restart the machine with osx install disc in the cd drive it is selectable on the grey screen.
    Any solutions would be welcome.
    Thanks in advance
    John

I too have a post pending on this problem since 4 days and no reply/help from anyone. I believe XP cannot be installed from an external drive unless you change the boot order in the BIOS, which doesn't help us Mac users.
I cleaned my internal drive with a cd lens cleaning disk and now it recognizes some disks, although not the xp install disk. But you could give it a shot, it may work for you if it's just a dirty lens.

  • CD/DVD Combo Drive ejects media

You pop in a cd, it pops back out. It doesn't mount to desktop. I have tried different brands and I am using the right CD-R. I zapped PRAM. Any suggestions?

will it take and DVD movies, install discs, music CDs?
    try resetting the PMU -
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    Wait 5 seconds.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.
looking at the age of the computer, might be the drive has finally bit the dust.

  • Ibook g3 combo drive not working

I have a 500 mhz  Ibook G3  with a non working combo drive. I went and replaced it with a new combo drive. The new combo drive didn't work either, so I dug deeper. When I checked out the "about this Mac" drop down , I saw that the combo drive doesn't appear at all. I also cannot eject/open the CD drawer. If I manually open the drive I can't get a disc to play or even spin. So I an assuming that it is a power to the drive issue. Any ideas? Do I need a new ribbon cable or is it a software thing? I'm running 10.4.11.
    Thanks
    Tom

You may have gotten another drive that was faulty.
I don't think it's the cable because the iBook G3 uses a single cable for the hard drive and the optical drive, using a Master/Slave configuration. So if your hard drive is working, the optical drive should work, too, unless it's not connected properly.
Did you use iFixit's guide to install it?
It sounds like hardware, not software.
