IBook thinks it has two displays

Hi all. My first post to these forums. I've never had a problem serious enough to post here before....
Purchased a used iBook Dual USB 12" 800MHz to replace one with a logic board failure. I need to run OS9 (in Japanese) for reasons that are a bit complex to go into; not using Classic in OSX but OS9 startup. This worked just fine with the original (now dead) iBook.
So, I insert an OS9.2 istall CD into this newly obtained iBook. The display switches to 640x480 in the middle of the LCD. If I go ahead and install, the installed system folder has the same behavior. Same if I copy over the system folder from the dead machine. Same with English and Japanese versions of OS9.2.
When I open the monitors control panel, two panes open up as if there are two monitors attached. Each has only one resolution option; one of is the 640x480 resolution and the other the full 1024x768.
I'm told by the previous owner that this iBook had a new logic board under the Apple replacement program. Does anyone know if there's something about the replacement logic boards that would cause this behavior? Is there anything I can do about it? I bought this iBook used specifically for this purpose, so it's a bit disappointing to find it won't work!
Thanks,
Steve
iBook   Mac OS 9.2.x

Got it! Boece put me on the right track. I'm not sure how much of the following was necessary to solve the problem, but here's what I did.
I booted up in OSX. Plugged in the monitor adaptor. Downloaded the Screen Spanning Doctor hack from www.macparts.de and ran the uninstall. Restarted and nothing had changed. Ran the install. Rebooted into OS9 and magically one of the Monitor control panel panes now had the Arrangement tab (hmmm... Japanese version of OS9; I think it said Arrangement). I dragged the two monitor icons on top of each other and the screen expanded out to fill the 12" screen. Problem solved.
The previous owner said she was a designer. And she supplied the external monitor adapter. Quite likely she had run some kind of spanning hack.
I can say I've learnt something today. And wasted best part of a day trying to get my partner's computer up and running for her. But at the end of the day, it looks like we can probably screen span if we want to
Thanks. One happier used Mac buyer!

used a widget i found free on the Muse site - after hours of work - it works correctly - except -- after publishing - it seems to think it has two more "pages" to the widget and pauses for a long "blank" page at the end of the

An instance registers itself by sending a message to the listener.
The machine and port used to send the message are defined as an initialization parameter, LOCAL_LISTENER.
The listener listns on the TCP/IP network for messages, such as registration, coming in on the port designated in the listener.ora file.
If there is a machine name mismatch (DHCP), a port mismatch (administrator), a network mismatch (sys admin) or a firewall blocking the port by default (OS vendor) and not opened (sys admin), then there may be an issue with self-registration.

I have a ibook that powers up but has no display, is it an easy fix? how much would it cost to fix

    Hi,
Can the sounds of an active hard drive be heard at some point (indicating a normal startup)?
There is a problem with the graphics processing unit (GPU) and its ball grid array (BGA) on some iBook computers, leading to similar symptoms. Reflowing (resoldering) the BGA is a work for specialists, and is going to be expensive. A web search will  return a number of more or less realistic alternative attempts to solve the issue. Outside pressure applied to the affected area has sometimes been used for troubleshooting, or even as a temporary "solution".
It is of course possible that the iBook in question has a completely different fault, such as a broken display cable.

I don't think I see my situation addressed. I have one mobile me account and a separate appleID for purchases.   I have 4 devices and my wife has two. Right now they are all using the same mobile me account to sync just the calendar and address book.
1.)  I want to add email syncing for my 4 devices and email syncing for my wife's two devices separately, but we want to sync and share the same calendar and address book.  Is this possible?
2.)  I also have 5 different calendars, one for work, one for home, one for... etc.  Is there a way to have different devices only sync certain calendars and not others or is it an all or nothing deal?
Thanks in advance for any tips!

To begin with, I would like to try to explain Apple's confusing nomenclature in regard to iCloud.
Apple have called the whole cloud thing iCloud, there are a number of features under the iCloud umbrella, some of which require their own login. iTunes is one of these, another is what Apple have unfortunately also called iCloud.
You can use the same Apple ID (account) to login to both iCloud and iTunes, but you don't need to and often users will login to each service using a different ID.
The part that you need to remember is that the services available when you log into iCloud are completely different and unrelated to those when you log in to iTunes. Your iCloud login enables mail, contacts, calendars, find my phone, Back to My Mac, Documents & Data sharing and photosstream, it does not affect any of your iTunes services.
To avoid confusion when discussing your problem, when I mention iCloud, I am referring to the services under the iCloud login, Whereas I will refer to the whole cloud thing as The Cloud.
Generally speaking it is not a good idea to share an iCloud account between different people, it often results in contracts, calendars et cetera being deleted by others. Saying that however you can add secondary iCloud accounts to your devices at settings> mail, contacts, calendars. Secondary accounts do not have all the features of a primary account, but are often very useful. Because you can enable or disable each individual feature of an iCloud account, you can cover almost any situation by using secondary accounts.

  • Can't get two displays to work anymore

We have a computer lab where I work of PowerMac G5's, all which have two 17" LCD monitors attached. One of the computers recently stopped working with two displays and will only work with one. If both monitors are plugged in, the LCD that works will be the one with the "extra" desktop area. If you unplug a monitor, you can get the actual desktop area on the one remaining monitor. The monitors are both fine (swapped them out) and the video connector/converters are fine, as I swapped them with another system that works fine. When looking at "Display" in system preferences, the "arrangement" tab is completely missing on either monitor. I have reinstalled the drivers, (it's an ATI Radeon 9800 xt 256 mg) swapped with another video card from a spare system, and even reinstalled Mac OS X (reinstall/archive feature) and still nothing has happened. I've thought it was a hardware problem all a long, my boss thinks it is software. I'm very new at Macs. Any suggestions?
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

If you can find a used one. That is the only dual card Apple was selling at the time. There a other choices now, from adding a PCI card, to replacing your current card with a dual. I'm not sure of the AGP speed of your machine, so can't recommend a specific card, but when you do buy one, insist on a money back guarantee that it will work with your machine. Some cards don't work with all the machines the claim to be compatible with.

  • IBook thinks LCD is a Television

We have an old iBook that we use for presentations with a projector, and it recently stopped being able to send signal to the projector. If we boot the iBook with the projector attached, the initial grey screen with the Apple logo appears. When it switches to the blue background, the projector says "no signal." In the Displays preferences, the main display is called "Television" and it gives choices of different resolutions and MHz. (It should be "Color LCD" and without the MHz values.) The projector does not show up as a display.
Thinking that it surely was a software problem, I booted the bad iBook off a good iBook G3/500's HD (in target disk mode) and the same symptoms appeared. It is not a connection problem since the adaptor works fine when plugged into the other iBook. Zapping PRAM and resetting the PMU did not remedy the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas? Could a short circuit (perhaps in the wires going through the hinge) be confusing the display detection?
    Thanks,
    Mike
    iBook G3/500   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Although I was very skeptical, doing this fixed it...temporarily. After resetting the PRAM, the Displays preference pane came up as Color LCD. I put it to sleep, plugged in the projector, woke it, and that worked too. After telling everyone that it was fixed, I put it to sleep, disconnected the projector, woke it up, and then it had gone back to thinking it was a Television display. It still didn't detect the LCD correctly after restarting it. I was going to reset the PRAM again, but missed the start-up chime. (Another weirdness of this iBook is that the Start-up chime doesn't sound through the external speakers, only throught the head phone jack...at least some times.) After it booted the second time, miraculously, it again detected the LCD.
I know that for the second reboot the screen was opened around 90° but I don't remember how far it was opened the first time. Hopefully, the first reboot was a fluke and there is not a short in the LCD cords going through the hinge. (I suspect that my personal iBook G3/500 has come down with the dreaded cords-through-the-hinge problems where things go haywire if it is opened 90° of more (screen flickers, I lose WiFi connections, and my trackpad occasionally stops responding). The part arrived today.)

  • Daisy chain two display port monitors (Dell U2913WM) to new Mac mini Thunderbolt?

Everything I read said that I could hook up a display port monitor to a Thunderbolt port on the mac mini.  I purchased two display port monitors (Dell U2913WM) that can be daisy chained, and hooked them up.  All I get is mirroring.  Does anyone know how to turn off mirroring with this setup?  I did not get the "uncheck mirroring" option in preferences until I hooked up the second via the HDMI port instead of a daisy chain.  The problem with that is, I cannot take advantage of the full resolution through the HDMI.  It seems I have wasted my money on two monitors.
    Looking for advice on:
    1) How to daisy chain these two Dell monitors to the mac mini and turn off mirroring and use an extended desktop, or
    2) How to take advantage of the full resolution through HDMI port?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

So re-reading this thread, I now realize you did exactly what I wanted to do but your issue was having a cloned vs. extended desktop. Oops!
I believe your "nothing plugged in" issue is the cable. I'm not sure that TB cables are backwards compatible with DP - I think it's only the ports. Do you see multiple monitors in "System Preferences > Displays" if you hook the monitors up like you described in your OP?
My Dell U2713H arrived today and it works like a charm with the supplied Mini-DP to DP cable. The built-in display on my 13" mid 2009 MBP still works if not in clamshell mode, although I will mostly use mine in my HengeDock. In the OSD of the monitor, you can access "Display Settings > Display Info" and it will show you the DP capability. Mine is only DP 1.1a and I believe to run 2 of these at full resolution you will need the bandwidth in DP 1.2 which includes MST (daisy-chaining). This could be your problem.
Can you access the same menu in your OSD and report back what your DP compatability is?
    Thanks!

  • I have 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute?

I just bought a 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute any work at all?  I read where on a PC they would work together, but on a MAC they do not.
I read that Display Port has higher band width than DVI, NEC monitors for best performance they recommend using DIsplay Port.
When I was setting this up I looked at a Nvidia Quadro 4000, unfortunately it was for PC, it had 2 Display Ports, in the Mac version they reduce it to one.  I did not think there could be a difference.
Mainly want to use it for CS6 and LR4.
    How to proceed???
I do not want to use the Quadro 4000 for both, that would not optimize both monitors, one DP and 1 DVI.  Using just the 5770 would work but I do not think the 4000 would be doing anything, and the 5770 has been replaced by the 5870.more bandwidth.
Any ideas, I am a Mac newbie, have not ever tried a Mac Pro, just bought off ebay and now I have these problems.
As a last resort I could sell both and get a 5870.  That would work, I'm sure of that, it's just that I wanted the better graphics card.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    The Hatter,
I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can.  From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance.  The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs.  Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA.  I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000.  Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected?  I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are.  I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4.  Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

  • What happens if you think you have two apple IDs?

I think I have two apple IDs. One I created many years ago with an IPod, but I don't know what that one is now. It has most of my music attached to it. Now I have one with my email that doesn't have all that music and I can't get the music to attach to it??

Content from the iTunes Store is permanently bound to the Apple ID through which the content was purchased. If you used two different Apple IDs, you'll need to use both IDs to authorize computers, view your purchase history, or re-download items. If you can't remember an ID or its password, try this page:

  • How to see only one of two displays in Snow Leopard Screen Sharing?

I am trying to set up screen sharing and find that since I have two monitors working on the machine that I want to connect to, two monitors show up on the client that I am connecting with. This causes a problem in that the scaled screen image that appears on my macbook pro is too hard to see and work on.
Is there a way to specify only one monitor image to appear in screen sharing?

On my Mac OS X Screen Sharing display, it has a display selection pop-up in the upper left side of the Screen Sharing display
    Both Displays: 3760 x 1920
    Display 1: 2560 x 1440
    Display 2: 1200 x 1920

  • My iPhone has two identical options under "iTunes wi-fi sync" that are the same computer. I only have one user on my  computer, and I tried moving my iTunes file in Finder to organize it and now my library's not synced with my phone. Help?

My iPhone has two identical options under "iTunes wi-fi sync" that are the same computer. I only have one user on my computer, and I tried moving my iTunes file in Finder to organize it and now my library's not synced with my phone. Help?

I have the same problem. Right now my iPhone 5S shows 3 instances of the computer to which it is connected under Settings » General » iTunes WiFi Sync. I'm having problems connecting and syncing, and this is probably the cause: the phone chooses one of these connections, and it isn't the one that's actually in use. What's probably happening is that the phone and computer establish a connection using a dynamic IP address, the address becomes "disassociated" due to error, another address is associated, the phone retains each address/link, and each link is displayed as if it represents a separate computer (the fact that the name of the computer is identical is ignored, as the only thing that is considered important is the IP address). But that's all conjecture. More important, I'm not sure how to fix the problem. A network reset doesn't do it.

  • I have a frustrating problem with my iPhone 5 post ios8 installation. The ring tone won't sound when phone is locked/switched off, although the vibration does work. I think it has something to do with "do not disturb"

Hi, I have a frustrating problem that seems to have occurred post iOS 8 installation. When my iphone5 is switched off the ring tone fails to sound i only get the vibration. If i am using my phone and a have an incoming call then the ring tone works as normal. I think it has something to do with "do not disturb" ... i see from the menu in "do not disturb" that under the heading "silence" there are two options "always" and "only when the phone is locked" This does not seem to make sense as i have to choose one or the other!
If anybody can help advise me on this problem i would be very grateful.
    Thanks

    Hello Mogulman46,
So what that means is when you have Do Not Disturb turned on, you may have an alert depending on the setting and how you are using your iPhone. So if it is set to Always, then that means that no matter what, your iPhone will not be notified. If it set to Only while the iPhone is locked, then that means that you will not get notification when your iPhone is locked but you will get notifications if your iPhone is being used. Also keep in mind the settings All Calls From can be set to certain contacts like Favorites, Everyone or no one. If you are using Do Not Disturb and you do not need it, then turn it off.
Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Run two displays with current Mac mini?

Can two displays be run with the current mac mini? I would like to be able to have itunes open on one display while using the second for all other use. Thank you.

The new Mac mini has two dispay ports, the mini-DVI and a mini-DisplayPort. You can attach a display to each port with the proper adapters. It also comes with a mini-DVI to DVI adapter.

  • My ipad has two names

I do not know how I did it, but my ipad has two names as far as my PC is concerned. Apparently in my initial zeal of getting my ipad set up (and the fact that it came "broken" and the "Geek Squad" had to restore it to "factory settings"), my ipad did not get a "name". Somewhere thereafter, when I tried syncing, it/itunes asked me for a name for my ipad....and so I did (Belles ipad")
SO, now my ipad has an "ipad" name and a "Belles ipad" name, as far as my PC is concerned. I think it was causing "issues" for awhile, but now when I sync, I make sure it is to "ipad". HOWEVER, when I finally got to a wifi connection (I live very rural, so that was a first...), and I downloaded books to the Kindle app, it downloaded to "Belles ipad"
Is this going to be an issue when I sync to my PC next time? How can I get back to one name for my ipad (how do I eliminate "Belles ipad")? I think I need to "register a new Kindle" on Amazon so that when I download more books, so that it all goes to "ipad". I do not want to loose the info on "Belles ipad"
    Did that make any sense?
    TIA

Don't know if it helps, but do you know you can change the iPad name in iTunes? From the list on the left, just double-click on the iPad name and you can change it to whatever you want.
    Just an idea.
