IBook to eMac

My iBook of course has AirPort from which I get the internet from but my eMac doesn't and needs to be updated is there a way I can channel AirPort the signal through my iBook to my eMac?

Not unless your eMac has an Airport or Airport Extreme Card Installed. However, you can share files by either using a Router or hard wiring.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107908
As you can see from the link above the use of the term Airport can be confusing unless you specify what you mean by Airport.
Airport Card
Airport Extreme Card
Airport Express (Router)
Airport Extreme (Router)
Your Airport on your iBook is recieving it's signal to be wireless from what????? a 3rd party wireless Router??
an Apple Airport Express, Extreme, or Snow????
There is a difference in the Routers, Not the technology.

  • IBook and eMac wont play nice!

I have an iBook dual usb and an eMac with Nvidia Graphics and they wont file share like they used to. I want my iBook to talk to my eMac so I can pull files off of its hard drive.(This is because the iBook only has a 10 gb HD.) I also reformat my iBook's Hard Drive quite often sadly. so all of my backups are on my eMac. The real problem is that my iBook's Finder fails to recognize that it is an admin and only lists the "/user/clay" directory. The reason I know it is finder is because right now I have to use cyberduck to get all of the files off of my eMac. Cyberduck initally only shows me the "/user/clay" folder but it has the option to go up one folder and can connect to the "/" folder correctly. If anyone can help that would be awesome.
    Thanks,
    Clayton

  • What is the best Compressor setting for best quality video playback on an iBook g4?

I know the iBook and G4's in general are very outdated today, but I need to ask anyways. I have some video projects in 720p and 1080p in which I have down converted to 480p and also exported to MPEG-2 for DVD (personal wedding videos and videos made for my clients using Final Cut Studio). Anything encoded at most resolutions using h264 won't play on my iBook. Even 480p.
I have about 20 hours of mixed video content that I need it in a format that is suitable for an iPhone 4 and an iBook 12" with a 1.2GHz G4, 1.25GB RAM and I added a 250 WD 5400 IDE hard disk (running 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 for Classic Mode). I know the iBook doesn't seem like the best tool for modern video playback, but I need to figure out which setting will play best with iPhone 4 and iBook so I don't need to make 2 local copies of each video for each device.
The iBook plays best with the original DVD output MPEG-2 file and playing back in QT Pro or VLC... but I already have 180 GB's of MPEG-2 files now and my little HD is almost full. I don't have enough room to convert all the iPhone 4 counterparts. If I use Compressor 3.5.3, what is the optimal setting for iBook and iPhone .m4v or .mp4 files that can play on both devices? So far 720x400-480 widescreen videos @ 29fps works great on my iPhone, Apple TV 2, and other computers but seems to murder my poor iBook if encoded with high profile (and still choppy on simple profiles). 640x480 (adding black matte bars to my videos) plays fine in MPEG-2 but drops frames or goes to black screen if I convert it to mp4 (and looks bad on the iPhone 4 because of the matte). But if I convert on any of the simple profiles, it looks terrible on my iPhone 4 and a blocky on the iBook.
This is the problem leading me to having 2 copies of each video and eating my hard disk space. What is the best video setting for both playback on the iBook and iPhone 4? Can the iBook playback H264 at all in decent resolutionsat all? I don't really want to have a 480p .m4v collection for the iPhone 4 and a MPEG-2 RAW collection just to play the same videos on the iBook.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • Emac computer for editing video

    Hi I have a 800 MHz PowerPC G4 emac computer 1G MEMORY.
I would like to know if this is good for editing video using final cut pro, and if I will don't ha problems like render or other?

Well, the minimum requirement for FCP5 is an 867MHz G4. So I think Jerry's right. FCP5 probably wouldn't install.
Now, had you had that processor that's one notch higher, I would have said it would be just fine. Pretty similar to my laptop specs, which runs FCP just fine for simple edits. I've even cut 4 camera multicam edits on the powerbook with a FW drive.
I'm not recommending the eMac, but, a G4 is a G4, whether it's in a PowerMac, PowerBook, iMac, iBook, or eMac. There's no expandability on an eMac, but it's a G4.
I would imagine FCP 4.5 would install, but you may need to revert your OS & QT versions.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.

  • Finder not operating after upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3.4

I tried to upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3.4. Everything worked properly except for the fact that the finder menu bar at the top of the screen kept flashing. I upgraded again to 10.3.9 and the finder completely stopped functioning. I could still access all the programs from my dock but could not access the hard drive directly or see files saved on the desktop.
To solve this problem I reinstalled 10.2 but am now having trouble with the system update for 10.2.8 (which I've noticed has been a problem for others).
    Any suggestions?

USING OS X INSTALL CDS/DVDS ON MULTIPLE MACS
The question of using system/software install CDs/DVDs on more than one machine is frequently asked.
    So, FYI:
System software installation CDs/DVDs, that come with a particular Mac model, are hardware specific to that model, and not intended to be used on other Mac models. For instance, the CDs/DVDs that are shipped with an iMac are not to be used on an iBook or eMac.
And the "Tiger" DVDs that are shipped with any new Mac, also are not to be used on other Mac models.
If such an installation were possible, or somehow accomplished successfully, that action would constitute a violation of your license agreement, which limits installation to a single computer.
The "Single User Software License Agreement" can be found here Software License Agreement.
Similarly, any "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs for a particular Mac OS will ONLY work for that Mac & system. For example, if a new Mac that shipped with Jaguar/Panther, was purchased shortly before the release of Panther/Tiger, the user may have purchased "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs, for a lesser price than the full install set. These CDs/DVDs do not contain all of the necessary components for an independent installation of Panther or Tiger.
The license agreement applies to single user retail versions of system software. The "Panther" or "Tiger" boxed set, for example.
If you wish to upgrade to Panther or Tiger, you have to purchase a Full Retail Version, of either OS.
    Good Luck!

  • OS X Tiger upgrade

Hi, I have OS 10.2.8 on my old G4. I'm trying to upgrade to Tiger but when I put my new disc in I select the language and after that it tells me that I can't install on this computer. Is that because I don't have Panther on this computer? Do you have to go in order or can you skip an operating system release? I'm using the disc that came with my new powerbook. Does that matter? Do you have to purchase an upgrade for an older computer even if you have a new computer that came with the discs? Lot of questions I know but any answers would be appreciated.

  • 'Paint' not working correctly

The symptoms are consistent; lines drawn are 'dotty', not complete; it's possible actually to color quite outside the boundaries of the frame, etc. When we bought the wonderful little machine, running Classic 9.2.2, we were given several new install disks, Appleworks 6 included. Then after some monthes I upgraded the OS to Panther, 10.3.9. The machine seemed to handle it well with no other problems. I do suspect that the upgrade perhaps corrupted the original install we did while still running Os 9.2.2. As I understand, the Panther upgrade did not include these applications as 'new installs', am I correct? Would the thought be that a reinstall of the original Classic cd of Appleworks would not work now that we're up to Panther? And in that case perhaps a new Appleworks cd specifically for Mac X is required. Thanks for your thoughts. Eric

The symptoms are consistent; lines drawn are 'dotty',
not complete; it's possible actually to color quite
outside the boundaries of the frame, etc.
My first step here would be to look at Peggy's User Tip "AppleWorks has stopped working correctly" here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=607287
Then I'd check the version of AppleWorks you have installed, and if it's earlier than 6.2.9, update it. (Keep the downloaded update file in case you need to repeat the update.)
Use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on your hard drive BEFORE and AFTER doing the update (and before and after any other software installation).
If neither of the above improve things, you might consider removing all AppleWorks related files (NOT your documents, though) then reinstalliing Appleworks from the install disks that came with the machine. (Peggy also has a tip on this procedure, which depends partly on which 'wonderful little machine' you have.)
As I understand, the Panther upgrade did not include
these applications as 'new installs', am I correct?
Correct. AppleWorks has never been part of the operating system. It has been bundled software with Consumer models of the Macintosh (Performa, iBook, iMac, eMac and Mini) for many years.
Would the thought be that a reinstall of the original
Classic cd of Appleworks would not work now that
we're up to Panther? And in that case perhaps a new
Appleworks cd specifically for Mac X is required.
Your Classic install will work provided you have Classic and OS 9 installed on the machine. The install disk installs a package which contains both OS X and Classic versions of AppleWorks, but the installer itself will run in only one of Mac OS 9 or OS X. If you have both installed, your Mac will automatically pick the right one.

  • Extending display with second monitor

I am trying to add a second monitor to expand my desktop area. I routinely do this with my G5 laptop by simply plugging in a second monitor, clicking on DISPLAY in SYSTEM PREFS, clicking ARRANGEMENT, and clicking off MIRROR DISPLAYS.
With the iMAC G5 ARRANGEMENT does not appear as an option and default seems to be mirror. Any way to make this work?

This is an update to my previous post. I searched on Google about this problem and found an answer -- an old Macworld article:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/39969/2004/10/imacscreenspanning.html
It describes a freeware program called Screen Spanning Doctor. I printed out the page and followed the instructions. It worked! I now have a Samsung SyncMaster 930B set at 1280 x 1024 and my iMac G5 set at 1440 x 900 (maximums for both) and They are not mirrored; the Samsung monitor extends the desktop of my iMac G5. I couldn't be happier.
Just in case Screen Spanning Doctor does not work for you, be sure to print out this Apple support document, Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
You can never be too careful. I believe what this will do is undo whatever changes Screen Spanning Doctor does. Per the Readme:
"This program is intended to unlock some features of the graphics hardware in some Macs (iBook, iMac, eMac but not for all models - you can find a complete list at my website http://macparts.de/ibook). On supported Macs it will allow the use of an extended desktop where usually only mirrored mode is available. This enables you to use an external display to extend your workspace. It will also unlock additional resolutions for the external display making it possible to driver high-resolution screens. This is especially nice if you want to use an LCD panel that has a higher native resolution than the 1024*768 of the internal display. After you apply the patch you should see an additional tab in the displays prYou will only see this tab if you have at least the monitor adapter plugged in."
Good luck! (I'm going to make a donation to macparts.de, which created this program. I figure it's worth $19 -- what I paid for the VGA display adapter at the Apple Store.

  • Disconnecting built-in monitor - will external VGA allow higher resolution?

I want to connect an external monitor to an iMac 17" FP G4. I was told that if I disconnect the built-in monitor (on the logic board), then I can get more than 1024x768 on the external mini-VGA port. I'm hoping that someone in the forums has done this and can verify. I am thinking of getting a 20" external that supports 1680x1050. I was told by a service guy that this was a "little trick" you can do. By disconnecting the built-in monitor, then the machine assumes that the external is the primary monitor, and allows higher rez.
    Thanks in advance

A few iMac G4 owners, whose computer display had some issue
decided to remove the attached chrome arm and LCD; and then
run solely a single external display. The results varied and some
were OK with the mechanical and software patch/hack/mods
they did to make the computer work that way. Of those, some
still had to do other things to get the external display's resolution
correct or to a more desired setting, some old patches for that
are available; and some users say they still work in the G4 iMac.
You could also try the 'screen span doctor' and also' switch resX'
both are free; and to some extent, both are sort of hacks... With
these, you may be able to experiment without removing the iMac
LCD display; since that is very invasive and may be a big mistake.
You can adjust the resolution for an additional display and also
with the other software that allows screen expand, not just mirror.
And the screen span doctor is an older software patch/hack
which came with a disclaimer. Some computers failed & others
appeared to work in the different screen mode. The original
expanded desktop patch was for iBook; then eMac and iMac G4.
These have been posted with links to the download sites in
the Discussions forums, and are still in the site, with disclaimer.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I play MPEG-4 (.MP4) files smoothly on QT 7.0.3?

Since upgrading to QT Player 7.0.3 and tiger (10.4.3), none of my MP4 (AAC) files play smoothly on QT. Both the audio and video play with intermittent jerks. Playback in VLT is fine, and playback in QT 6.x was not problematic. I have reinstalled QT 7.0.1 and then 7.0.3, but to no avail. This is an unexpected glitch in my QT 7.0.3 because QT is adertised in the following glowing terms:
"QuickTime has a legacy of supporting and developing the latest digital media standards ensuring that you can create and play back the widest range of standard formats in the industry with QuickTime... In fact, the ISO chose the QuickTime file format as the basis for the MPEG-4 file format."
And "With the free QuickTime Player or browser plug-in, you can play back any compliant MPEG-4 file."
These PR statements are not ringing true with me.
Does anybody else have this problem? Does anybody have a fix for me?

Open the app, change the output format to 44100Hz,
    and try the file again.
You may need to do this each time a non standard
    formats is used.
Thanks for the info. This was a work around "fix" I noticed in another thread. It seems to have unhappy side effects in other aps--which means it is not a good fix. However, I did try it when I first noticed it in the other thread. It did not work for me when I tried it then, and it does not work for me now. My output format is and has been set at 44100 Hz. My MP4 files still do not play correctly.
Concerning the terminology of "non-standard format," as far as I know my files are standard format--straight from a relatively new camera. However, I readily admit I do not know what a "non-standard format" might be. But even if my files might be "non-standard" (whatever that means), it baffles me that this problem did not occur with QT 6.x but does with QT 7.x. The sensible thing to assume with a QT upgrade (required for Tiger, no less--this is not an optional upgrade) is that QT 7.x should be backwards compatible with "non-standard" files that played flawlessly on QT 6.x.
Anyway, thanks for the hint. I am still looking for a solution.

Here are the requirements for Lion:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/06/07/mac-os-x-10-7-lion-system-requirements/
In order to install Lion you have to have Snow Leopard and then update to 10.6.8:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Personally I suggest that you stop at Snow Leopard.  It still is the most efficient OS that Apple has devised and it still works great.  Go to the Lions only if there are feature that you really need.  There may be a price to pay in slower performance though.
    Ciao.

The Apple TV's quality is 10x better then the quality you get from your MacBook when watching movies or reviewing photos.
Like I said before, all my content is right there on my TV and it is always up tp date.

  • Show Item Info gives wrong numbers

On my iMac 20" Core Duo with OS 10.4.6, the hard drive data shown in the Finder with the Show Item Info option selected is incorrect. For example, the internal drive shows 232.57 GB with 47 GB free. Activity Monitor or Get Info both show the correct amount of 162.38 GB free. Same thing happens with external drives. Graphics show the correct dimensions, though. On my iBook with OS 10.3, the item info is shown correctly.
Apple suggested reinstalling the system, but this seems like overkill for such a minor problem.
