IBook Trouble!

Specs for my iBook:
700 mhz G3
640 mb ram
14 inch dual usb model
My issue is that when I try to start my computer (cold start), I get the vertical colorful lines and my hard drive makes a click and a high pitched whine for a second but does not start up. I have to keep pressing the power button hoping that the computer will start. When it does start up nothing appears to be wrong. The hard drive doesn't click and I don't get the vertical lines. Also when I am using the computer nothing seems wrong. I already had the logic board problem fixed so I was wondering if it could be the hard drive. I do have an external hard drive that is bootable so I can put os X on there but I'm not sure how to do it.
So at the very least I would like to know how to install os X on an external hard drive and how to boot to that drive... and if at all possible if someone knows if it's the logic board or the hard drive.
Thanks everyone for your help

If the logic board has been replaced already I doubt that's the problem, could be a number of things like a loose cable in the display housing, hardrive, etc.
Anyways to answer about the external drive part:
http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0710.html
Or you can just erase your external using the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format via Disk Utility, and restart using your OS X DVD/CD in your iBook then choosing the external drive as the destination for install.
And booting is a matter of holding down the Option key on your keyboard when you boot the unit.

Hi, I have the  iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

    Hello Glittergirl68,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the function to reseize the Font in an iBook is not functioning properly.
I recommend a few things here. First close all the apps that are running in the background:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
From: iOS: Force an app to close
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
When you have done that, restart the phone, and try again.
If the issue persists, I would follow these steps from the article:
iOS: Troubleshooting apps purchased from the App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702
    2. Check for app updates
You can setup apps to update automatically in Settings > iTunes & App Store, but make sure that your apps are up to date:
Open the App Store and tap Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All.
If  prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information. App Store will then download and install the app updates.
Note: Some apps may require a Wi-Fi connection to update.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If none of your user-installed apps will launch, there could be an issue with Apple ID authorization. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information. You can also remove an app from your iOS device and download it again from the App Store or sync the app from your computer.Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.
    4. Restart the app
If the issue affects only a single app, try closing just that app.
    5. Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
    6. Reinstall the affected app
Remove the app from your device and reinstall it:
Tap and hold any app icon on the Home Screen until the icons start to wiggle and show a small "x" in the top-right corner of the app.
Tap the "x" in the corner of the app you want to delete.
Tap Delete to remove the app and all of its data from your device.
    Press the Home button.
    Go to the App Store.
Search for the app and then download it again.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Ipod + mac minis + ibook = trouble, right here in river city

I have a 2nd generation ipod. I use it for music and file storage. The ipod moves between 3 different mac mini's and one ibook. The mini's all run OS 10.4.11 and the ibook is operating with 10.2.8.
I haven't had any problems with anything until this very morning.
The ipod is NOT showing up on my desktop or in iTunes on the ibook. It is showing up in the Apple System profiler.
I have not updated anything, changed any settings, connected it to a PC or even listened to the ipod.
It seemingly just doesn't want to talk to the ibook.
Can anyone help? I've looked at the other threads on related issues, but nothing seemed to help.
    Thanks,
    Sara

Just as I thought. Thank you.

  • IBooks trouble

I am unable to get any books or PDFs to open in iBooks after latest update? Any ideas why or what to do to fix it?
Also unable to update operating system?

Thanks, fiend...for some reason it was working correctly when I got home tonight - go figure!  I've been fighting it for about 3 days.  I *did* try tapping on the screen when it would go into the iPod manual & nothing would happen.  The powers that be must have fixed something since last night, lol.

  • New hard drive on ibook=troubled relationship between itunes/ipod/ext drive

A few months ago, I bought an external hard drive to accomodate my large music collection. I got wonderful advice from this forum about how to sync that with my itunes/ipod using 'preferences' and selecting the folder from the external drive as my itunes library.
Then, the hard drive on my ibook g4 had to be replaced. Very sad.
NOW, when I open itunes and set the preferences to the itunes folder on my external hard drive, itunes does nothing to show that it recognizes that folder.. the music doesn't appear in the itunes library (though it it still on my external drive.)
FURTHERMORE, since the new hard drive, when I connect my ipod to the ibook, I get a prompt saying that my ipod is connected to another library... but this is my only computer, the only computer my ipod has ever been 'married' to.
What should I do to get my itunes/ipod/external drive relationship back in sync now that I have the new ibook hard drive?

  • Weird ibook trouble

I am experiencing a bizare problem with my ibook and i'm not really sure how to proceed.
When I start the ibook the screen is totally dead, but it starts up normally. I know its working because I can see it on my network, access the HD etc.
If I zap the PRAM during start up, the screen turns on, I see the grey screen with the apple logo and the start-up spinner, but the spinner stops and the machine locks up before finsishing start-up.
If I try to start from an OS disc, or the hardware test disc, or target disc mode the screen stays blank.
    Any ideas?
    thanks in advance
    Bob

What version of the OS is installed on the iBook? Are you running OS X 10.4.9 on it, too?
What is the MHz rating? How much RAM is installed?
How big is the hard drive and how much space remains available?
Now I'm going to hit you with a lot of info, so don't be overwhelmed, please. It could be something else, but there is a possibility that you may be having logic board problems. Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If the iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
You can find the original purchase date of the iBook, by entering its serial number into the box toward the bottom right of Apple's main support page under "About Your Support Coverage."
If it is past the three-year time limit (which it probably is), try calling Apple at (800) 767-2775 and ask for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
If the answer from Apple is absolutely, positively, "NO!" you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.
    John Sawyer
    CJS Macintosh Repair
Instructions for removing the lower case:
    iFixit.com
If Apple doesn't come through, and the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
    Good luck.

  • Help :) My Ibook does´nt detect my new eksternal HD !!!!!

    Hi gals and gents
I need some help with my new eksternal HD (Iomega 120 GB firewire/usb) , since when connected to the ibook nothing happens except the HD seems to charge?
Reading other treads seems to indicate that I should format the HD, but those treads suggest that I should go to applications>utilities>diskutilities and I should be able to find the eksternal HD in the left window (but it doesn´t apear there !) and it should be erased/formated from there.
But since it doesn´t im stuck there
Any help feedback is much appriciated.
    Best regards

  • Dock gone, minimize doesn't work, computer won't respond to "shut down"....

First of all, I'm surely not a computer expert by any means, but one morning when I turned on my computer (iBook) trouble erupted as follows:
Once I logged on, the desktop picture was changing pictures every 2 seconds. I changed it to not switch pictures anymore.
I have my dock on hide at the bottom of the screen and when I went to retrieve it with my mouse, it would not pop up. I figured a restart was in order, but when I clicked on the apple and hit "restart", nothing happened. I clicked on "shut down", but again nothing happened. I also noticed that none of my windows would "minimize" when I hit the minimize button at the top left of the windows. I double-clicked the top of the window and the minimize tab would flash, but the window did not change.
I then noticed that none of my hot corners worked, so I opened up system preferences/dashboard & expose and noticed all my hot corner settings were blank. When I tried to reset them, it would show for a second and then disappeared, but would not take the setting.
One or two things on the fritz would be allright, but all these things tell me something must be seriously wrong?
I've read and read, but still haven't seen anything like this. Do I have to do a backup and re-install of Tiger or does anyone have any ideas that I could try before I go through all that? Any help would be appreciated!

First of all, you should be able to force it to shut down by holding the power button until the screen goes black and it is not in sleep (takes ~5 seconds).
When you boot up again, try checking your library (YOUR USER NAME>Library>Preferences>com.apple.systempreferences.plist
It's hard to interpret, but it might have gotten deleted.
Also check the finder preferences (Library>Preferences>com.apple.finder.plist.
If the library doesn't have much in it, it's possible it was deleted.
Unless you had a backup, you can't recover it.
If the library is still full, and your preferences for other applications are still the same, it's possible that you need to take your mac in for a checkup.
This probably won't help with your specific issue, but it is a good app to have to manage Finder/System. It is called OnyX, and you can get it here.
If you have an AppleCare warranty, try calling them at 1-800-275-2273
(Canadians, call 1-800-263-3394, other countries, look here)
    Hope I helped!

  • Itunes freezing when synching

itunes freezes and the message in the itunes activity box is "Finding Purchased items on XXXXX's iPad"

Hi, I found a solution to our problem.
1st- erase iBooks that seems to be the one to blame for all our trouble
    2nd- back up iPhone
3rd- disconnect your iPhone from your computer and go to Settings/General/Reset/ and Erase all Content and Settings
4th- re connect to computer. Itunes will ask you if you want to configure it as a new device or restore from back up. Restore from your back up.
Result. You have you Iphone free of iBook trouble and ok to sync again.
This is what I did and worked from me.. hope it does for you too.

  • Having trouble adding new collection in ibooks?

    Hi
I am having trouble a adding a new collection in ibooks.  When I click on "+New Collection" it disappears and the keyboard does not pop up and then seems to freeze.  It was working fine yesterday and only encountered this problem this morning.
Has anyone else had this problem or know how I go about fixing it?
    Thank you!

The problem is not thru TWC... I can access my account in Outlook and also by Webmail.
The problem is on the Iphone 4 (I had no problem on my 3G). Like I said, the settings I have entered are the same as the settings for the other 4 accounts. The only portion of the setup that I cannot access during the "failed" setup is the "Advanced" where I can turn SSL off and confirm password authentication.

  • IBook G4 OpenFirmware trouble

I am having lots of USB trouble on my iBook. I cannot boot into a USB drive with any commands in OF. I have tried several bootable USB thumb drives with the same result. When I start up into OpenFirmware, the light on the thumb drive goes on (it always stays on when the laptop is powered on) and then goes off like it's not plugged in. I have made a backup of my HD onto an external HD with CarbonCopyCloner, and when I boot into OF, the HD will not spin up. When I plug it into another USB port, it turns on, but after about 7 secs, it crashes with the read/write head jumping to the side like when you force shut-down a computer. If I needed to restore my drive, would I have to have a Firewire to USB cable to boot the drive and clone it back onto the laptop?

Most times the USB thumb drive does not make a suitable boot volume for G4 Macintosh in OS X. If an OS X is installed or clones to a USB flash drive, the formatting has to be correct and sufficient free space must exist. Plus a few other rules that are widely published need be applied. With some drives, they need to be self-powered and not use a port on the subject computer; the power is not there all the time during the boot cycle, so the external drive using only port power may not be seen at all. This may vary, but especially when troubleshooting or booting from a system clone, etc.
•Mac startup from open firmware to OS X - search result link:
    https://www.google.com/#q=Mac+startup+from+open+firmware+to+OS+X
In the later G5 iMac, there was a change in firmware to allow USB flash drives to be used as boot volumes. Some unix variants do OK from a flash usb drive, and the OS can be tweeked in Terminal. Then there are Developer pages...
There are advanced user databases at Apple Support involving the use of such behind-the-scenes technologies and developer discussions, perhaps you should register to use them? It does not cost.
There are times when it may be possible, but when they will work, they should not require you to run the computer in Open Firmware. And some of the steps with associated questions lend questions of purpose that also may breech the terms of use and other intellectual property rights when copies are made, etc.
So, that may be why some questions across the discussions threads could go unanswered. Some are due to lack of an appropriate reply, or unwillingness to commit to some kind of reply that may also be marginal. And as these machines, OS X versions & user base fades, fewer would be able to formulate a reasonable reply.
Hopefully you realize there were a few who did read the question.
Some may have not understood it as a day-to-day user inquiry,
and others probably did not want to research an answer online.
Sorry to have said nothing until now, & even now.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT5065 Trouble adding video .M4V to iBooks

Is anyone having trouble with adding video to iBooks? I exported the files as the instructions said but it is still not working.

    What does that mean?
Does iBA say the file format isn't allowed?
Can you add it ok but it won't play at all?

  • HT5085 I am having trouble with an iBooks but it is not working. Any hints?

I am having trouble with downloading iBooks. The book has many repeated pages and missing pages. I have tried going to "purchased" and downloading it again but the download doesn't work. Thanks.!

On an iPad there should be a Store button at the top left of the iBooks app (top right if you are on an iPhone or iPod Touch) - tap that to go into the store, and there should be a Purchased tab at the bottom right of the store page from where you can re-download past ibook purchases (assuming that they remain available in the store).
Whether you can buy books from within the ibookstore will depend upon what country that you are in, some countries currently just have free books.

  • I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.  Why?

I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.
I have pressed "C" during boot to force it to boot from the Optical Drive.  It boots normally.
I have pressed "option" to get the boot menu.  The only option available is my hard disk drive.
I have pressed "option""command""shift""delete" at the same time during boot to force it to skip booting the hard disk.  I get a blinking smily face/question mark for a while, then it shows the boot menu, at which point the only available option is my hard disk drive.
In system preferences in OS X I have looked to change the boot drive, but the only option, again, is the hard disk.
Can I not boot from the Optical Drive?
    Why?

    Hello,
From the link I provided it says:
Nearly all open-source software is available to download from the Ubuntu repositories, but the amount of proprietary software available for PowerPC linux is limited. You will have the same version of Firefox, LibreOffice, etc as other architectures.
Notable absentees are: Chrome/Chromium, Adobe Flash (although open-source alternatives are available, see below), Wine (however Qemu can be used, see below), ndiswrapper, proprietary video drivers and Dropbox (but, you can use Ubuntu One).
I do recall it being very limited when it came do downloading Linux software that supported PPC.
You wouldn't be any better off than using firefox or safari on Mac OS X 10.4.11.
If your looking for a faster and more compatible web browser then I would suggest the following, which I've recently found very useful on Mac OS X 10.4

  • Iʻm having trouble leaving a review in the iBooks store.

Iʻm having trouble leaving a review in the iBooks store. I have an Apple ID and password and I sign in ok. I clicked Ratings and Reviews and I see other reviews there so I know it can be done. The website accepted my 4 star rating, but it is "grayed out" in the area for me to write a review. I tried cutting and pasting, and it seemed to accept my submittal but my review never showed up and it is a good review.
When I click on "Write a Review" it shows "you have already reviewed this item" because it accepted the 4 star rating but not my written review. Anybody know what the problem could be?  Thanks a lot!!
