IBook upgrade to 10.4.6

I upgraded an iBook to 10.4.6 and on the restart I get passed the gray screen and apple it goes through the progress bar, but then I get only the user's desktop image -- no dock, no menus just an empty desktop. There is a pointer but nothing to point to -- keyboard commands don't do anything either.
I can start up from my iPod that has a system. I ran disk utilty and verified/repaired permissions also ran the repair disk. I tried Disk Warrior. I can startup in safe mode, thinking it might be a login item confict, but can not get passed the password entry -- i just get the spinning beach ball of death. I've used the option key to pick the system cd but then i get the gray screen with the do not symbol. If I try and start up with a cd in the drive and hold the "c" key I get the gray screen but then the apple shifts in it's background and locks up.
I'd like to reinstall but can't boot from the CD without the broken apple -- if I pick it from the "option" key boot I get the 'do not' (kernel panic?) icon.
Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks in advance. I'll erase and re-install if need be.
Dave

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Dave.
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.

  • IBook upgrade from 10.3.5 to 10.4.3

My daughter, the other end of the country from me, has just upgraded her iBook from 10.3.5 to 10.4.3 with a clean install, having copied her hard disk to her iPod.
The Migration assistant utility is not interested in importing all the bits she needs back from her iPod [either as 'from another Mac' or 'from another volume on this Mac'], so I am not sure where to go from here.
Clearly she can copy all her documents back to her iBook [though I am not sure about putting her iPhoto pix in the right places]. However, when it comes to copying back all the apps for which she does not have newer versions how does she find all the support files/prefs and get them in the right place?
    Cheers, Colin
PS I think hers is a G4, not that it matters, I guess.

    Hi Colin,
What kind of iPod does she use? The migration assistant only works with firewire devices, not with USB-devices.
How did she backup? Did she clone the hard disk to the iPod or did she copy by drag&drop? If she used e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone there is a chance to recover, otherwise sshe will have to manually copy back her documents and reinstall some applications (many apps can be copied back by drag&drop as well).
    BTW:
Why did she Erase&Install in the first place? Apple recommends using the simple upgrade option, if there are problems an Archive&Install should also do. There is absolutely no reason for an Erase&Install unless she upgraded from 10.1.x or earlier. Here is a procedure for the simple upgrade: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist

  • TS3274 Unable to choose books by author after IBooks upgrade

I have just upgraded my IBooks on my IPad 1 (iOS5.1.1). Now if I am in the browse mode I am unable to choose books to purchase. Each time I click on an author I am asked to click on author to see books. I have tried removing IBooks from my IPad and reloading it and still have the same issue. Since I am using an IPad1 iOS5.1.1 is the most up to date operating system I can put on so I can't try upgrading to iOS6.0. Is there a work around for this problem?

There are a few categorical places one must visit in order to synchronize iBooks for Mac with IOS iBooks. There is no need to remove the iBook for Mac application.
System Preferences > iCloud > Documents and Data is enabled
IOS Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections (enabled) and optionally Sync Bookmarks (enabled)Assumption that iCloud is enabled on the IOS device with documents and data enabled
iBook for Mac > Preferences > General: Sync: Sync bookmarks, highlights, and collections across devices
    iTunes
Pick your IOS Device under DEVICES in the left nav
Choose Books along the top toolbar
In the Books panel, choose one of the following
    Books and PDF Files
    Books only
    PDF only
    In the Sync Books panel
    All Books
Selected BooksClick the box next to the books you wish to Sync
    Select iTunes Sync
The books (and PDF) you selected above are now on your IOS device

  • IBook upgrade won't load in iMac?

iMac wants to upgrade my iBook app but refuses to clear outdated Apple ID so I can enter the new one.

    Content and Apple IDs -
Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID.

  • IBooks upgrade erased notes and highlights

I upgraded the iBooks app on my 3rd gen iPad today. Now iBooks no longer remembers where I left off reading any of my books, plus it has lost all my highlights, notes and bookmarks. How can I get those back?

Ah, fixed it finally -- iBooks just got confused. I have been backing up and syncing things with iCloud so when I deleted the book from my iPad and then downloaded it again -- all the bookmarks and highlights were back!

  • IBook upgrade?

can i upgrade the hard drive and the combo drive by myself?
    how?
please recommend websites/stores where i can buy reliable replacement parts/upgrade hardwares.
    thanks.

Obviously you void the warranty. Try http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/ they have instructions on how to service many Macs. MceTech has the parts you would need or you can try the usual suspects (Newegg....).

  • I have one Mac, two users.  I wish to share a iBook with my wife, the other user.  I move a copy of the book folder to "public" folder, and in her account "added to library".  Does not show even though cue claims it is in her library.  No book.

I find sharing books within my one computer near impossible - not easy as music is.  It used to be easier, but now with iBooks and some other changes this has become difficult.  Also - I can use the search feature to find the "books" folder, and use "Get Info" to find the supposed address, and then not find that folder location at all using a manual method stepping through Finder.  So a second question is:  where is this file hiding?  It is not under User/Library/Containers.... as claimed by "Get Info".  It seems that if I buy a book, the family can use it to put on their iPad.

Part of me understands the need to have purchases protected.  I hope this does not get more and more complicated for "within family use".  It is nice to buy music and share it with my wife, as we used to do with books prior to the iBooks "upgrade" - which mostly consisted of making it impossible to share books.  Thanks though for your response;  I was hoping for some luck and that maybe I had missed some simple step.  To Apple:  lighten up.
Best regards and thanks again for taking the time -

  • Ibooks not working with PDFs after update

After loading the updated OS 3.2.1 iBooks would exit to the home screen almost immediately when switching to the PDF bookshelves. I've just downloaded a new version of iBooks and the same thing happens. Within a second of touching the PDF button I'm kicked out of iBooks. Regular books seem okay. Am I alone with this problem, should I expect more updates soon?
    George

Did some testing today. Used iTunes on my Pc to remove all the PDF files on the iPad. Then sent a PDF file as an email attachment. I was able to save and open that file in iBooks. I was then able to add more PDFs from iTunes with the file/add file to library menu choice. after syncing I could open them in iBooks. There doesn't seem to any drag and drop option on the PC version.
My old PDFs had been transfered with Goodreader and using Goodreader to move the files still seems to break iBooks.
It looks like the latest OS and iBook upgrades have somehow broken things with GoodReader....

  • 10.3.9 update for ibook

What are peoples views on this update? I tried it before and then my ibook would not turn on. I had to reinstall the original software and create a new hard drive file thing.
Shall i do the combined update again? Are there any known problems with it?

My view is that 10.3.9 is fine and I am not aware of any known problems.
When people upgrade the operating system, they do sometimes run into big problems where the machine will no longer operate. These problems are almost always due to underlying software issues that existed at the time of the update. Corruption of the filesystem is probably a biggy. Also, sometimes a 3rd party app is not compatible with the upgraded operating system and it causes problems. Every once in a while, a hardware problem shows up coincidentally with an update. Sometimes it is related to a peripheral connected to the computer. There is also the chance that it could be that firmware needs to be reset. Rarely is it due to a bug in the operating system.
If your hardare is okay, then you should ultimately be able to get the iBook upgraded to 10.3.9. But how much hassle it will take for you to get there I do not know. You said that you had to "create a new hard drive file thing". Maybe what you did will solve the underlying problem that you had and maybe not. Usually, the most extreme measures needed to recover from problems like this are to re-format the harddrive, using options to erase the hard drive and write zeros to it, and then to re-install the OS.
These are my views, based on reading hundreds of posts in the forums over the last couple of years. Plus, we have an iBook G4, new in Aug of 2004, which has been running 10.3.9 just fine for months. I hope this is helpful.

  • Can't open PDFs with "open in iBooks".

When I click on "open in iBooks" the PDF file appears for a second in the library and then disappears. I have to completely shutdown my iPad and then restart. Sometimes even this doesn't help. I noticed this problem started after the most recent iBooks upgrade.

I have been having the same problem. The default app that came up when I would do "open in" was GoodNotes. I deleted that app and could then open the pdf in iBooks with iBooks as the default. Put GoodNotes back on and iBooks is still the default. So maybe there is something conflicting in that app. I also see a gazillion more apps that will read pdf files now when I do the "open in" through Mail.

  • Ibook error message

    Hi everyone,
I having trouble, I am downloading books from itunes so I can read them on my iphone 4 - problem is that on a few of them I get this error message (below) and large chunks of the book are missing.
This page contains the following errors:
error on line 1 at column 1:document is empty error on line 1 at column 1: Encoding error
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error
But there is nothing else on the page. Does any one have any suggestions? I have recently updated to the new software and i wish i had never bothered.

    Hi,
I had a similar problem.  I had downloaded a new book using my iPad.  I then just synched with my Mac and the book on the iPad became unreadable and displayed a similar error message.
I have not upgraded my iPad to iOS5, because the upgrade created a few problems on my phone.  But I went back to iTunes and upgraded to the latest version of iBooks.
After the iBook upgrade, I was able to read my book and all of my bookmarks and highlights were preserved.
So if you encounter a similar problem, make sure that you have the latest version of iBooks before doing anything more drastic.

  • IBooks 3 is the WORST!

I carry several PDFs on my iPad and iPhone for work.
Everytime Apple releases a new iBooks update it changes the total count of the iBooks library on either the iPhone or iPad by increasing it by 1.
Then, when you try to drag your library books to iBooks, the numbers start having significant differences between the master library in iTunes and the library on the iPad/iPhone.
So, then I have to delete the entire iPad/iPhone library and copy from the master library again.
Once that has been done, I have to watch the spinning circle in the top right hand corner of iBooks until it indexes everything. This process takes up to 2-hours on an iPad 2, 1-hour on an iPhone 4s.
Then what, oh yes, wait for the next iBooks update.
Apple, I have tried very hard to like iBooks, but GoodReader just gets it. You can copy anything you want and access it in microseconds.
Because of this I now buy my ebooks from Amazon.
Apple engineers are the laziest people on earth. They probably just sit there testing iBooks with like 3 files thinking that they are true geniuses.
Has anyone else suffered the iBooks upgrade library discrepency?
Please do not suggest Auto Sync. I just love how Apple says, "If you dare turn off this feature, we are going to delete everything from your iPad".

When will the apple team finally fix ibooks?  It is the worst its ever been and desperately needs an overhaul! It was bad enough when ibooks was linked to itunes, but at least it worked, and you could store your entire library on an external drive.
Upgraded to Yosemite only to find that all my books in itunes disappeared (would have appreciated a warning on that, apple) and that I had to restart everything from scratch.  Plus ibooks keeps crashing constantly!
When is the next release? When will apple give ibooks the attention it deserves?
Only Apple know the answer to that. Sorry, but no one here can help you as to a date. You can try asking Apple at the Contact Us link at the bottom of this page, but as they have never given any exact date away in their history of releases, then I would say just be patient. I never use iBooks, so I can't help you with the rest.

  • Suitable hardware reccomendations!! Some help would be great! thanks

    Hi all,
Hope you guys and girls can help out with this one! Confirm my thoughts!!
Trying to set my dad up with a setup for his guitar recording.
At the moment he's using garageband 2 with a 1GHz ibook with 512mb ram, and a cheap usb sound card (forget which one but lots of feedback and hum )
so...looking for a bit of an upgrade to get him more effective and ot remove some frustrations!
Funds aren't unlimited so im thinking of selling him my 1.2GHz ibook, upgrading the ram to 1.2Gb and getting something like a RME Fireface and Logic Express.
Does this sound like a reasonable setup?! he's looking to record guitars one track at a time up to maybe 6 or 8 tracks maybe with a software piano track and a drum beat too.
Any major issues with these hardware choices?!
only other option I had thought of was a DIGIDESIGN 002 and Pro Tools (the light version i think)
Thoughts and help please in return for a hearty merry christmas and an e-beer!!!
    hehe
    Noel

currently lots of problems with the m audio mobile pre usb intermittently gives lots of hum and interference,
That may not be the M-Audio's fault. It could be bad cables, ground loops, buzzing light dimmers and all manner of problems. A good Direct Injection box could help too - check out somewhere like Sweetwater.com and search on DI boxes. Avoid the very cheap ones.
any opinions on the ibook spec? would we be quite ok with the 1ghz as long as we upped it to full RAM?
It might be a bit slow, especially if down the line you're going to use sampler instruments and lots of effects processing. You will certainly need an external firewire hard drive for Logic projects, as the internal drive isn't fast enough. If your budget can stretch a bit, and portability isn't a vital requirement, you could look at a new Mac Mini with a cheap monitor - it will give you vastly better performance.

  • Replaced Hard Drive now another problem.

Today my friend replaced the hard drive on his iBook G4 933mhz as he feared it was dead after the machine wouldnt recognise it - very much like my G3 did a year ago - whilst doing so when he was taking the power button lead up from the logic board - due to the way it was deisgned it looks as if the whole thing has been taken up from the logic board, even after that he couldnt just remove the top connecting bit, he put it back in place but when he closed the machine up after replacing the drive it doesnt switch on.
Is ther any way of soldering this back onto the logic board? or is it now even more buggered than it was before?
    Thanks

    Scampdoodle,
There's a life lesson learned here,
Don't let friends work on your iBook unless they are certified. Bring it to your local Apple Store/Reseller or someplace like PowerBookRes.
No, I don't think you can solder it back on without causing more damage. Most documentation warns to be extremely careful when removing the top case because of the speaker and power wires. Those wires are fragile and can easily rupture, which causes problems (one of the reasons why certified technicians should do these things). You may be able to buy a wire from a place like eBay.
    Good Luck,
    Jon
PS Don't forget about places like PowerBookResQ;. They do iBook upgrades as well as troubleshooting.
