IBook will not sleep with clamshell open -

I have been using this iBook for years with no problems until the system updater updated to 10.4.9 on 4/24/07. Ever since then the iBook will not sleep on its own, I have to shut the clamshell or use the sleep command from the Apple menu.
I have tried disabling all sharing (file printer internet).
I have reset the PMU multiple times.
I have tried several different settings in the energy saver panel.
I have used "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly."
I have verified and repaired permissions.
Here is my console log from today:
May 11 05:07:31 ibook kernel[0]: System Sleep

Looking back several days seems the "lookupd" hangs up quite often and the Sound assertion always fails.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does this happen when running from the AC adapter or from the battery, or does that not matter?
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). Repair permissions on it.
Recheck the settings in Energy Saver in System Preferences.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps.

  • MacBook Pro will not sleep with lid open, but now solved, very odd.

I bought a 2.4 GHz MBP about a week ago, as soon as I got it home I reinstalled the OS and zero-out the drive. Everything appears to work perfect until I noticed that the MBP will not sleep with the lid open.
    But...
    Close the lid, it sleeps.
Select sleep from menu, it sleeps.
Let the battery drain down with lid open, laptop sleeps.
Whent thru painful troubleshooting process, reseting things, permissions, what is installed, running programs...blah blah blah, nothing no difference.
So, backup the drive using superduper to external firewire and reinstall all over again, just like i did when i first got home, except I did not let it connect to the internet. I went thru and setup everything then connected and performed each update, one at a time looking for what might hinder the sleep process.
And the result is a big fat zero.
Same install process as i did the first time, and same updates as the first time. But now the laptop sleeps perfectly.
Gotta love computers, so very consistant
Just my .02 input on this wacky issue.

Try trashing these 3 .plist preferences and reboot. Reset your Energy Saver preferences.
    HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.AutoWake.plist & com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Also, look at your system logs in your Console application and see what is causing the "wake event." It could be hardware-related. Do you have any external devices attached, such as a mouse or hub? I've seen Bluetooth problems with wireless BT mice.

  • 10.9 will not sleep with apps open

SO frustrating. I have to close all my apps to get the Mac Pro tower to remain in sleep mode. Otherwise it will just pop back on again. I have read and tried some of the less technical work arounds but it still does this. Suggestions? Besides going back to an older OS, I mean.

Open System Preferences > Energy Saver
    Click:  Restore Defaults
    Restart your Mac.
Try putting the Mac to sleep with apps open.

  • IBook will not sleep when lid closed

    Hi,
I recently had my Hard Drive replaced, the old one died. It was all covered by AppleCare and the repairs done at a Apple Authorised Outlet. After installing everything again I just found out that my iBook will not sleep when the lid is closed. The screen is still on and bright. Any ideas why? Is this dangerous? Any quick fixes?
    Cheers,
    Jack

    Jack,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to give the Apple Authorized Repair center a call back and let them know what's going on. I've seen this before here on the forums, and it was attributed to a sleep magnet not being put back in. It's most likely this. Apparently, putting this magnet back in can be easily overlooked.

  • IBook will not sleep

Since upgrading to Tiger, now when I close my iBook lid, the computer will not sleep. The only way I can get it to sleep is to unplug all peripheral devices (including my power cord) and select sleep. It used to sleep automatically on closing. I've tried adjusting my energy saver choices in System Prefs, unclicking receive faxes in System Prefs, and all other funky suggestions I found online but to no avail-it will still not sleep when I close the lid. Does anyone have more suggestions? I travel a lot and like to store my computer in sleep mode in my computer case, but now it runs instead and wears my battery down!

    Hello,
Unfortunately, I think your problem is hardware related. From your logic board, running through the right hinge of your display, there is a cable that is connected to your display inverter board, and a device in the display, called a reed switch. This cable contains several wires (6). The reed switch is a device that, when nearby a magnet sets the computer to sleep. The magnet is positioned underneath the keyboard so that when the lid is closed, the computer is set to sleep. If a wire is broken (most likely in the hinge), you may have one of several problems. For example, your sleep function will not work. Or, as in my case, the backlight does not work, so the display goes dark. Only time will tell which cable will break first, so in your case it was the one to the reed switch.
What you need is a 076-1073 PCEBA Reed Switch with Cable for
dual USB white iBook. It is an original Apple part and can be purchased from http://www.smalldog.com for $20. However, replacing the cable is somewhat tricky, but not impossible. I did it without previous laptop surgery.
There is also another discussion thread on the backlight issue. It has some good links.
This is what I think is the problem.
    Good luck

  • Mac Pro does not sleep with lid open

Hi this was the original post I posted a couple days ago.
    "Hi All,
I have had a problem with my mac book pro, it does not sleep while the screen is left open. The way I used to be able to tell if the mac is sleeping is the light on the front should flash as it does when the screen is closed. Here is what has happened in the past.
    1. The original hard drive failed and was replaced with a 500gb
    2. I have had the top case replaced as the mac book pro would not sleep with the screen closed
    3. A clean install with OSX 10.6.8
After doing all this, the mac is still having the same issue.
When the screen is left open, I can hear the fans whirring away and the battery is drained as if I am running an intensive program. I can leave it all night with the screen up and wake up to the battery being completely dead. It usually takes about 3 hours or so. (105 cycles on the battery). The settings are set so that the screen and mac hibernate after 1 minute, and all applications are closed with wi-fi, etc turned off.
When my fathers and my brothers mac book pro is left open, the light on the front of the case flashes.
I have been to the apple store repeatedly and they are adament there is no issue with the mac. They did all their "tests" and the hardware was tested as "good".
    Thanks for any help!
    Chris"
The problem was solved with the following:
    1. Deleting Login Items
    2. Turning off blu-tooth
    3. Unchecking "wake for network access"
    Sources given:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3402
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4167
However, the same problem came back last night.
Any ideas what is causing this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

I forgot to mention that I followed the same instructions that did solve the problem.
    The things I tried were:
    1. turning off wi-fi
    2. closing all apps
Doing this however did not solve my problem either.

  • Since Snow Leopard, Mac Pro will not sleep with Apple wireless keyboard

I have an odd problem, now on 2 Mac Pro (Nehalem) with 10.6.1:
Since Snow Leopard, the system will not sleep as long as a) the user is logged on (any users/profile) and b) the Apple aluminum wireless keyboard is 'attached'.
If I log off first, sleep works fine. If I turn the keyboard off first, it's fine. But if hitting 'sleep' when logged on, the screen turns dark, sleep process begins, but the system comes right back (with a note 'keyboard disconnected'.
It's as if the keyboard disconnects after sleep, but the system still monitors it, and wakes up.
Note: Wake for bluetooth devices IS NOT ENABLED!
Here is the console log (relevant info):

Does anyone have any idea? While on, the keyboard never disconnects - i.e. I don't have any other issues with BT or the keyboard (this is the 2nd I tried).
Also, my apologies for double-posting this earlier in a different forum; cheers!
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi,
    and thanks for posting that.
That's too bad. I am probably going to log off if needed, rather than going wired, but I can't believe that this might be more prevalent than just me and there is no 'fix'...
    Anyone ?!
    Thanks as always,
    Dan

  • IBooks will not sync with iPhone 4

My iBooks epub books sync flawlessly with my iPad and my previous iPhone 3GS, but when I just upgraded and tried to transfer everything over, everything was the same except for the iBooks. No books show up on the iBooks on iPhone 4 now even though when hooked up to iTunes it shows .25 Gigs of iBooks should be on the phone. I have restored my phone twice with no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Mark,
I believe you can sync your photos by using iTunes and selecting the photos.
Also, if you have PhotoStream the photos should sync.

  • 10.6.6 will not sleep with keystroke combination?

    h'lo again, all...
    any one experienced this?
on my MacBook Pro (2.16Ghz Core Duo) with OS 10.6.6, I can no longer use OptionCommandEject to go to sleep. It "sleeps", but wakes right back up.
    I can do the following;
    ControlOption+CommandEject to shutdown or,
    Apple>Sleep to sleep or,
    Apple>Shut Down to shut down.
Just ahve lost that one handy key combo.
    thoughts?

Try removing the Belkin hub and see what happens. There are certain USB hubs that seem to interfere with sleep.
    Other things you can try:
    1. Boot into safe mode and give it a try.
    2. Create a new user account then log into the new account. Give it a try.
Do you have any success with one of these?

  • IBook Will Not Automatically Sleep

Lately I have had a problem with my iBook G4 not automatically going to sleep after the specified period of time. Obviously this is a problem when running on battery power! I usually have it set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity to save the battery, but it will not go to sleep. I'll come back a few hours later to a dead battery. It does sleep when I shut the lid, and it goes to sleep fine when I select Sleep from the  menu. It will also go to sleep when the battery is low (about 2%). It just will not sleep after the interval that I set.
    I have tried the following:
Deleted the powermanagement.plist file then rebooted.
Verified the HD and repaired disk permissions both from disk utility and install disk.
Tried the cmd-shift-option-power reset option after shutting down, still the same...the iBook will not go to sleep on its own.
No software is running, no additional RAM has been installed, and this happens on both battery and AC power. Any thoughts?
    iBook G4, 12" 1.33 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Restart and hold down on the "shift" key until you see the spinning gear icon. This will startup the iBook in "safe" mode. Test to see if the iBook sleeps normally now. If it does, then you have some kind of third-party software conflict. If it doesn't, then you might consider resetting the Power Management Unit:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
"cmd-shift-option-power" is not the same thing as "control-shift-option-power"...

    Anybody else have this problem?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is app and data safe.

You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • I bought the Keynote app for my MacBook, but when I open the application and try to install it, I get an error message saying that the application will not work with my MacBook. What gives? And, can I please request a refund? ($19.99 = a week's groceries)

I bought the Keynote app for my MacBook, but when I open the application and try to install it, I get an error message saying that the application will not work with my MacBook. What gives? And, can I please request a refund? ($19.99 = a week's groceries).
Thank you for your help! - I did try looking for all available specs about Keynote on the Apple iTunes website, and found nothing that could help me. HELP!

    1
    Close all iWork applications
    2
Uninstall Keynote; this must be done with an application remover tool to delete the installation properly. Appcleaner is known to work correctly for this purpose, it is free and can be downloaded from here: Appcleaner Download
    3
    empty the trash
    4
shutdown the Mac and restart. After the start up chime, hold down the shift key until the apple logo appears
let the Mac complete the start up procedure completely, it will take longer than usual as the hard drive is being repaired
    5
Reinstall Keynote by logging into the Mac App Store using download / install
