Ibook will not startup

white ibook with OS10.2 about 2004. (I've reset the PMU and the PRAM - ibook is plugged into power) When I try to start up all I get is the apple with the rotating circle going but nothing further on start up. Can anyone let me know why I can not start up? (The cpu kept asking for the password and the main password over and over before this happened)??

Between the possible sources of trouble in the computer, in question, of these
one more difficult problem may be with the logic board or perhaps the hard disk
drive. There also is a control circuit on the board that allows the optical drive
and hard disk drive to boot the computer.
Given the possibility of some hardware failure, the computer may need to be
seen by an expert; be it via mail or parcel service to a company who is a
product specialist, such as wegenermedia.com, or another one where they
may take some time & not know what it is they are dealing with. As you pay.
While I have had good experience with the noted specialist, a long ways away,
I can't say what may be wrong with your computer at this point.
When attempting to start the computer into FireWire Target Disk Mode, did
the iBook's display show a large orange FireWire logo on the screen? It has
to get to this point, before you would attach the FireWire cable to it, and then
plug the other end of that cable into a working Mac with correct FW ports.
At that point, you would see a FireWire icon on the healthy computer's desk-
top and that would represent your iBook, seen as an external FW hard drive.
If the computer cannot boot in FW TDM, then there may be more wrong with
it. And IF you only tried to boot it that way one time, an error may have
occurred; so read through instructions, and try again. Doing the troubleshoot
effort can save you money. Just like learning preventative care can, too.
A product specialist who can give you an estimate, and test the computer,
at a reasonable charge and offer correct parts to fix it at-cost while it is
apart, is sometimes harder to come by; that is why I tried wegenermedia
to have them repair my older iBook white computer. Although I did sell it
the next owner still uses it, and that is a 2001 model.
Of course, a newer model is always alluring. I could be talked into some
new Intel-based 'Book; of course paying for it may slow my desire some.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • IBook Will Not Automatically Sleep

Lately I have had a problem with my iBook G4 not automatically going to sleep after the specified period of time. Obviously this is a problem when running on battery power! I usually have it set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity to save the battery, but it will not go to sleep. I'll come back a few hours later to a dead battery. It does sleep when I shut the lid, and it goes to sleep fine when I select Sleep from the  menu. It will also go to sleep when the battery is low (about 2%). It just will not sleep after the interval that I set.
    I have tried the following:
Deleted the powermanagement.plist file then rebooted.
Verified the HD and repaired disk permissions both from disk utility and install disk.
Tried the cmd-shift-option-power reset option after shutting down, still the same...the iBook will not go to sleep on its own.
No software is running, no additional RAM has been installed, and this happens on both battery and AC power. Any thoughts?
    iBook G4, 12" 1.33 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Restart and hold down on the "shift" key until you see the spinning gear icon. This will startup the iBook in "safe" mode. Test to see if the iBook sleeps normally now. If it does, then you have some kind of third-party software conflict. If it doesn't, then you might consider resetting the Power Management Unit:

"cmd-shift-option-power" is not the same thing as "control-shift-option-power"...

  • IBook will not start up!

My iBook will not start up all the way. It gets to the gray apple screen and just spins.(3hrs) I tried everything. It will not start up with 10.3 CD or OS9. It will start up with nortons CD but you cant see the Hard Drive. Hardware test CD starts and every thing checks out fine. What to do. I hope its not its final day.

    Paul,
Do you have OS X 10.3 installed on it?
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, and repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to helps things out.
If it won't start up in Safe Mode, you can try Single User Mode and fsck, but if Safe Mode won't do it for you, fsck may not, either.
Keep Norton far, far away from any hard drive with OS X installed on it. DiskDoctor is known as DiskDoctor Kevorkian around here. It finds non-existent "errors" and sets about "correcting," them, killing your hard drive in the process.
If none of Apple's own disk repair procedures work (Safe Mode, Disk Utility from the Install disc, or fsck), it may be wise to invest in DiskWarrior. It can often find your hard drive and repair it when Apple's own utilities cannot. DiskWarrior has saved my hard drive more than once.
    Good luck.

  • IBook will not sleep with clamshell open -

I have been using this iBook for years with no problems until the system updater updated to 10.4.9 on 4/24/07. Ever since then the iBook will not sleep on its own, I have to shut the clamshell or use the sleep command from the Apple menu.
I have tried disabling all sharing (file printer internet).
I have reset the PMU multiple times.
I have tried several different settings in the energy saver panel.
I have used "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly."
I have verified and repaired permissions.
Here is my console log from today:

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does this happen when running from the AC adapter or from the battery, or does that not matter?
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). Repair permissions on it.

  • IBook will not start up past gray screen w/ apple logo

iBook will not start up past gray screen w/ apple logo. So I have zeroed out the hard drive and reinstalled tiger. No change except if I start up holding shift it will boot and welcome comes up then black screen that says you must restart by holding down power key.
Zeroed out the HD again with same results. Also I have a iBook G3 with the same symptoms.

What you are experiencing is a kernel panic.
Try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or (in Tiger) click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with the Install disc's Disk Utility, then try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • IBook will not start up. Can anyone help please?

My iBook will not boot up anymore. It makes the usual startup sound, then goes to a gray screen with the Apple icon. Does anyone know what is wrong? I have all my homework on there. Most of it is backed up on my flash disk, but I have some other things not on my flash disk. When it did work, the computer would freeze every time I would launch Word to complete a homework assignment. The computer has just been acting goofy lately. Any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks.
    Bwicki

I would put in your Mac OS X install disk, restart the iBook and hold down on the "c" key. This should make your computer startup from the install disk. This will open the Mac OS X installer first and may ask you to choose a language. Pick the language you want to use and continue. At the next screen, don't continue to install Mac OS X but choose to open the Disk Utility from the Installer menu. When the Disk Utility is open, select your hard drive on the left-hand side and then choose to "repair disk" from the button on the right-hand side. Is there anything to repair? Is the Disk Utility able to repair it? When you're done, you can simply quit the Disk Utility and then quit the Installer to restart back to your iBook's hard drive.
Hopefully the Disk Utility can repair any trouble it finds. If it can't, you may need to invest in a third party utility like . If it doesn't find anything that needs to be repaired, there may be something else going wrong... Let us know what you find out.

  • Ibook will not boot PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hi,
First the ibook booted then would come up with the kernel error: square box with "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button......
I then booted to single user mode and ran fsck -y which eventually came up with the all clear "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK"
I then restarted the system which booted to the blue screen with some quirky graphics towards the top. It will now not boot into single user mode, just black screen or multi-coloured stripy screen. When booting from the CD drive the sceen is just blue or black.
Okay, I have connected the ibook via fire wire to a powerbook, and re-booted the ibook in terminal mode which brings up the fire wire connect symbol on screen.
After a while the system stalls showing part of the symbol and the connection is frozen. I have tried to re-install tiger using the powerbook to initiate as the ibook will not. However, it freezes at 50% of install.
I changed the ram to iliminate a ram failure, however... still the same.
While I was in terminal mode I erased the disk using the disk utility from the PB and then ran the install again... still froze.
This looks more serious than I thought. I'm now thinking that it could be the hard drive or worse. I have tried to use the apple support phone # and it does not seem to work, 1800 275 2273.
I'm having some real bad luck here. Any ideas?

I ran the apple hard ware test disc. The quick test found no errors. The extended test freezes up completely. Now I'm really stumed. The logic board came up with know errors.
When the system froze on the extended test. I falsed a re-boot. However the screen went black so I could not run the test again. It seems like a time thing... the ibook can only run for a short period before it freezes. Then it has to shut down for a while before it can run again

  • IBooks will not sync PDF collections with my IPhone. It syncs the collection title but not the content?

My IBooks will not sync PDF content with my IPhone. It syncs the collection title but no content. Both devices are set to sync collections? Any ideas how to fix this?

The 'sync collections' setting does not copy books or PDFs between devices - all it does is if you have the book on both devices and you move it into a collection on one of them, then it will be put into the same collection on the other device.
You will need to sync each PDF that you want on your phone. If you don't currently have them on your computer then connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over (that should copy PDFs and/or epubs that are in the iBooks app, not just actual ibooks), and if using a Mac with Mavericks on it do File > Move Books From iTunes in the iBooks app on it, and you can then sync them to your iPhone.

My iBooks will not open, I receive a message that states: "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing." How can this be repaired/resolved?

If you can't open a particular ibook then try deleting it from the bookshelf via the Edit button at the top right of the bookshelf, and (assuming that it's still in your country's store) redownload it via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the app (or if you have a copy of it on your computer's iTunes library sync it back from there).

    My ibooks will not download

The original author isn't clear whether he means the ibooks app or a purchased iBook. You suggest syncing between the two, which sounds reasonable, but how do you do this? iBooks doesn't work like iTunes does.

My MacBook Pro will not startup.  Its not responding at all.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can correct this?

    HI Catherine,
First, make sure it it shut down by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds. Plug in the power adapter. Press the power button and hold down the shift key to see if you can start in Safe Mode.
If the power adapter and/or battery are known good, the next thing I'd check would be the RAM to make sure it is securely seated. If batt and/or power adapter are questionable, then you'll want to find one or both and try them out; if you don't know someone with a similar MBP, this might be most easily accomplished by making a free appointment at an Apple Store "genius" bar.
