Ibook will turn on if i pull a chip off board

I have multiple ibook g3's and all with the same problem. They wont turn on, its not dc-board, not power adapter, it is something to do with the logic board but i'm trying to narrow it down more. When i hit the power button i hear a very, very faint high pitched whine noise, occasionally it will power on if i let it sit long enough but wont turn back on again afterwards.
*I found that if i remove a small chip labled(4410,scxa,L14aa)from the area that connects to the dc-board, (underneath the suspend light, over to the right side) it will power up, charge, run on battey,go to sleep.* Actually i dont understand why though, if i re-solder that chip back in things dont work, if i replace the chip it still wont work, but if its removed eveything is working.
Does anybody know why?? and what does that chip do?
On the newer ibook g3 that chip is now named to IOR,317n,5l5e,si44100y
Thanks
Tyler

Hey Tyler..,
I found that if i remove a small chip labled(4410,scxa,L14aa)from the area that connects to the dc-board, (underneath the suspend light, over to the right side) it will power up, charge, run on battey,go to sleep. Actually i dont understand why though, if i re-solder that chip back in things dont work, if i replace the chip it still wont work, but if its removed eveything is working.
So see the way that chip is attached to the logic board? It's a SMT 8 pin and 3 pins are all soldered to one huge land (conductive circuit board area) and 4 pins are soldered to another huge land. One pin is off on it's own. Those two lands are bridged by a large electrolytic capacitor. When I see that I think "power handling" and since the two chips are mirrored I'm thinking bipolar voltages involved and the pins off on their own are "gates".
So I'm thinking right away MOSFET power. I love those guys. Now I don't get a return on any of those numbers of on that chip you reference. Further down there's a similar situation and that chip is a FDS6612A If you Google that it comes back a 30V Single N-Channel, Logic Level, Power Trench MOSFET (the second return is a pdf and has a schematic of the chip. That sucker will sink 8.3 Amps! The cool thing about MOSFETs is that when the gate is triggered the junction resistance goes to near zero. That's why it can switch 8 amps without a gigantic heat sink.
Now not sure why your's boots without that chip but I'd be careful removing those chips. You'd be running bipolar chips single ended and that can't be good.
I'd look further down that board to the PMU99 (that's a generic designation from Apple for the PMU). On the other side of that board is a super capacitor. We've been talking about this and I've found a lot of bad ones especially in these older G3s.
I'm quoting myself:
"I've recently seen problems with the super capacitors that hold the settings on the PMU99 (this chip controls all the power functions as well as a .. well read about it:
http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1325401)
Here's pics of the capacitor that I just put one up here, it's from a 12" G4 1.2 GHz:
http://www.photolava.com/view/d5pr.html
They're pretty distinctive, so hard to miss.
Here's the blowed up one from the 500MHz 12" G3
http://www.photolava.com/view/d5pu.html
Now that's blowed up"
BTW that's pretty impressive that you discovered that about that chip.

  • BB Curve 8900 died and will turn on but still has the red "off" sign

    Hi all.  Great site.
I have a Blackberry Curve 8900 and last night the battery completely drained and I could not connect it to a charger until I arrived at work this morning.  I plugged the phone in around 9:00 A.M., and even now at 2:00 P.M. it is still not charged.
Strangely, the phone WILL turn on if connected to the charger, but the radio is still off.  The red "OFF" sign is still there on the upper-right corner of the screen.
Is there something I can do to get it to actually charge back to where I can use it?
    Thanks for all your help!!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
These batteries typically do not like to be fully drained. Sometimes doing so renders them useless. But, there are a few things for you to try before you determine that as the root cause.
    1) Get a new known good battery. See if it will charge properly in your BB. If so, then your battery is indeed damaged and useless.
    2) Give your battery to another known good BB of the exact same model. See if it will charge properly. If so, then your BB or your charger may be damaged.
    3) Try a different known-good charger in a known-good wall outlet. If it will charge now, then you know it to be your charger to be damaged.
These steps will help determine where the root cause is, which will guide you to the actions necessary to remedy the situation.
    Good luck!

  • My computer will turn on for a second then shut off.

I had just shut down the computer 30 min before so when i go back to turn it on i press the on button sounds like its starting up then shuts off it has a full charge took out the battery and tried it again. still doesn't work i kept try to turn it on and on but itll just act like its starting up then shut off. sometimes if i let go of the on button too early the light will just come on then immediately shut off. what do i do everything i own thats apple has been breaking this week.

    - If it is only one app try deleting the app and then redownload/install the app.
    - Reset your iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore your iPod.  First from backup and if problem persists restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Ibook will not boot up

    Hello
This is my first post, I am excited to have help from so many gurus. I have an iBook that turns on, but stays on the welcome screen with the dail spinning. Nothing happens after that, and the system will just stay like that for hours. Any ideas to fix this?

I have been having this same exact problem also. I hear the whizzing sound and when I try to turn my computer on it sits there with the dial spinning for maybe a minute or two but then just goes to a solid blue screen. At first if I tried a few times it would load up, but once I was online for a while it would just freeze up forcing me to turn it off. This has been going on maybe 4 days, but as of last night, it wont boot up at all. I dont have another mac to load my info on to, any other suggestions?

  • Installed new DVD drive, now iBook will not charge

    Hi guys,
I'm a long-time Mac user, and this is the first time I've had any problems so I'm new to this board. I had a bit of a look around, both on this forum and the FAQs, and this appears to be a unique problem.
Basically, for a while my iBook CD drive was spitting out CDs, as per a common problem which I was not able to resolve. Eventually the tray broke and it would not click back into place, and so I was left with an iBook with a CD tray constantly popped out.
I ordered a new DVD drive/burner that claimed it would fit an iBook, and when it arrived I pulled apart my laptop and installed it. Everything appeared to be in order, until I tried to plug in the AC adaptor.
The orange light goes on for about 10-15 seconds, then slowly fades away to nothing. If I unplug and plug it back in straight away, I get no light and no charge. If I wait 15 minutes, the orange light goes back on but once again fades after a short period of time.
My first thought is that perhaps the DVD drive is incompatible/drawing too much power, but I can't figure out how this would affect the charger, and why the problem would persist whether the power is on or off.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this? I don't hold much hope that this will be fixed without expensive surgery, but I'd like to try
    iBook G3, PowerPC G5, iPod   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi Ronda, thanks for the response. I've pulled it apart a couple of times and have put it back together via the instructions I downloaded on the internet both times, and have had the same problem. To be honest, I can't answer that! I'll have to pull it apart this afternoon again to check.

  • Ibook G4 Turned off and I can't get it to turn back on

My Ibook G4 turned off while I was listening to music and won't go back on. It was plugged into the wall and the battery is charged. Help me!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Check out Apple's Knowledge Base article on troubleshooting portables that won't turn on or start up.
    Maybe something there will help.

  • Ibook wont turn on.

my ibook wont turn on... plugged in, not plugged in, with the batter in, without the battery in... nothing. i closed it like i normally do, instead of shutting it down, and when i went to open it again, i got nothing. so i took out the battery to get it to shut down so i could restart. and when i went to turn it back on, nothing happened... nothing happens and it is really frustrating. i just got my ibook fixed about 4 months ago because it would shut down, now it wont stay on. does anybody have any ideas as to what may be wrong. i really hate taking it into the store, the genius' here are not always the most friendly.
    -stephanie

I'm telling you. I have lost all faith with Apple. The old iBook I had, 800MHz G4, simply worked fine with no problem waking up or starting up, although it's just a bit slow. Now, I am super frustrated when it just couldn't wake up, either with the sleep light flashing or not, ie it's black screen initially and when I press the Power button once to get it back to life, it just stays black!!!
So the only thing to do is to force power down by pressing the Power button for 10 seconds. Then I press the Power button once to start up, but it just stays black screen. I've left my iBook in that state for a day now, hoping that it will come back alife. But no! And the worst is, I had a similar problem starting up from wake just the day before. I called the Help Desk and they advised me step by step, from taking out the battery, to pressing OptionsCommand+PR, and OptionsCommand+OC, and doing Apple Hardware Test. The iBook seems to just work fine while on the phone with them. And barely 3 hours later, the thing just couldn't wake up. I've powered down and up many times now, and I've left it powering up, but still black screen till now (one day already).
Finding out about resetting PMU on the support page, I've also tried that, but it still can't work.
And you know what? I've sent this unit for repair 3 times already! First they say it's the HDD problem, so they changed that. Then when it still happened, they say it's the logic board problem, so they changed that for me. And again when it happened, they changed another logic board for me. So now, it's the fourth time, what do you think I should do? I don't think going back changing another logic board will help!
I am in fact ****** off! If Macs are great, then why me? Why my iBook? I am telling this forum that we cannot accept a big corporation giving us sub-standard products. I've since read this forum carefully and found that many of us faced the same problem! We just cannot sit down idly and let the company get away with it. This is a warning to fellow users out there that face this same problem. Let us voice out our frustrations and make Apple give us some compensation for it. I say this because I depend on my laptop iBook for presentation to clients, and this happened exactly twice when I was in front of my clients. I don't mind losing face but can Apple compensate me for my loss of business and future business from my clients?
Voice out strongly your unhappiness to Apple now!

  • Ibook will not shut down or restart

my g3 will not restart or shut off when prompted from the finder menu. it will turn off when i hold down the power button for ten seconds as recommended. i tried resetting the PMU but still no luck.please help!

I suspect that it might be software related... That could be isolated by booting from the install CD and see if the shutdown from it works. Also, I had a ibook that had the bad video memory problem that still ran fine otherwise, so I have made it a headless compute engine... so I do not have a window to click on shutdown.... therefore I use the admin user account and the terminal to issue the system command halt
given the prompt just type halt
    halt
that should work for you as well and lead to a graceful shutdown.
At least you would know if it is software or hardware

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • When I try to turn on my iPhone 4, it wouldn't turn on unless if I use an iPad Charger. When it will turn on. I can't connect to any WiFi Services or my Service Provider, I can't text or call anyone. When I unplug my iPhone 4 it'll just shut off.

So when I try to plug in My iPhone 4 to any plug it won't turn on or charge unless if I use an iPad charger. When I do get to turn it on. My Phone will Standby for a few seconds( While I'm Typing my 4-Digit Code) then it'll unlock and go to the home screen. Once I'm on the home Screen I can't Call, Text or Email anyone because my iPhone Can't detect any Wifi Hotspots and it also can't connect to my Service Provider, It'll just Say "Searching...". The non-internet apps work perfectly fine. So since I was able to use Just an iPad Charger to turn on my iPhone 4, I tried a Regular iPhone charger that were plugged into a wall or my computer. When its Plugged in, my iPhone will turn on ( Showing the Apple Logo) then turn back off. It'll constanly do this only when it's plugged into a Regular iPhone Charger, Either plugged into a Wall Socket or my Computer. So I Tried to Restore the Phone by using some of the Methods, given by other iPhone 4 Users, non of them worked. My iPhone won't Restart, Restore, Turn on without a Charger, Be Detected on my Computer and Detect my Service Provider. I really need help to fix my iPhone 4. I'm really not sure if it's a Malfunction with the Software on the iPhone, if my Sim Card is Broken. if the System is Corrupted but it only happens Rarely.

  • When I sleep the display of my MacBook Pro it will turn on again by itself.

Exactly 10 min after I turn it off my display it will turn on with a black screen for about 10 sec. then show the lock screen. It turns back off a little time after.
    Other Info
-I turn off my computer's display with 'hot corners'
-No mouse or external device connected (Somtimes ethernet)
    -Non-retina diplay version
    -Still in warrenty
    -Only chrome is open
    -Done a virus check
Has been happening in 10.8 and 10.9

actally it has helped me very much over the past several years and has removed virses from my compyers/PCs and has increased my performance greatly
It's almost certain that the only malware that it has found was Windows malware, probably attached to e-mail messages. Most Mac users have never encountered actual Mac malware.
As for increasing your performance... that's not really possible. All anti-virus software, even the most well-behaved, will have at least a slight negative impact on your system's performance when it's doing anything. If it's not doing anything, it shouldn't have any effect at all, ideally.
No anti-virus software is capable of improving your machine's performance. Even if you did happen to be infected with one of the rare pieces of Mac malware out there, Mac malware does not typically have any noticeable effect on the system's performance.
For more information on this kind of thing, see my Mac Malware Guide.
Now, as to the problem, I don't have the same knee-jerk tendency to blame anti-virus software as many people on these forums, but the issue you're seeing is likely caused by some kind of third-party software. Anti-virus software usually involves low-level modifications to the system that can cause problems, and it's wise to rule this out by removing your anti-virus software when you run into a strange problem.
If uninstalling ESET doesn't help, look at the list of login items in System Preferences -> Users & Groups. What items are listed there? Also, tell us what the contents of the following folders are:
