IBook won't completely start

I've had my G4 iBook now for about 4 years. I really haven't had much problems with it until yesterday. I was prompted to update my software (iTunes, Safari, and a security update), which I did, and then was told I needed to restart my computer. Well, it shut down ok and I was waiting for it to restart. It never did. The computer was caught on the blue loading screen with the Apple logo and the spinning gear. I've tried searching for a solution to this problem and all I could find was that it may be a logic board problem and that would cost $300 plus labor to fix. I was hoping that maybe it wasn't, considering I spent only $800 on this computer and another $300 would be crazy. I tried starting the computer in safe mode, but it still wouldn't get past the blue screen. Same with booting from the CD. I have an appointment with the local Genius Bar, but the soonest they could fit me in was tomorrow afternoon. I'm a teacher and not having my computer around is driving me NUTS! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have the same problem the last updates really messed me up. Can't get it to start up enough to look for anything.

  • 2008 macbook pro spinning ball and now won't completely start up.

i woke my computer up this morning and it wouldn't respond. it started with the spinning rainbow pinwheel, but now it won't log in. the farthest it's gotten is the desktop but it's blank - no icons, dock, or top bar. is there a way to troubleshoot this or does it sound like a hardware issue? does it sound like the hard drive is crashing?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac G5 won't completely start up after failed Security Update 2009-004

    The problem:
Last night I attempted to run the latest Security Update (2009-004) on my 2nd Gen iMac G5. The update did not reach completion and I received an error message saying it had been moved to the trash. I attempted to empty the trash and start again. At that point, the trash would not empty, the computer would not shut down, and finder would not relaunch. I had to use the power button to shut it down--have not been able to complete the start up again since. The computer begins to start up, i.e., a bong, and the Apple logo, and spinning wheel (which goes on forever and never progresses to startup login screen).
    What I've already done:
-Successfully started up from the install disk
-Run Disk Utility to repair disk and disk permissions; everything checks out okay
-Run Apple Hardware Test; everything checks out okay
    -reset PRAM
    -unplugged/replugged computer to reset SMU
-backed up some files via Firewire/Target disk mode
    My questions:
What is the best, easiest, most logical thing to do next?
Should I reinstall system software from G5 install disk?
What happens when you reinstalll from a disk that has an older version of OS? and how do you get the software back up to date afterward?
    Thanks!

I had the same problem though my mac was ok for a couple of days after the update. Tried to boot from original install disk (Tiger, though recently upgraded to Leopard), it didn't boot and disk got stuck. I took my Mac (G5 iMac circa 2005) to a specialist who ran disk warrior - HD ok, he did a few other tests and concluded it was a logic board prblem and uneconomical to repair. On this advice I have purchased (at considerable expense) a new iMac. If this has been a problem with the update that can be fixed I am 1) furious with apple that they have released an update that causes near fatal problems & 2) would like to know if there is any way I can make a claim against anyone (Apple?) for purchasing a new mac that I can ill afford due to the destructive nature of an update.
A friend phoned me earlier with the same Mac problem and I didn't connect my problems to the update but now I've done a search for it, I realise it is a widespread problem. Has apple made any statement about it?

  • IBook won't completely shut down

I have a 1.2ghz iBook with 1.25 gig ram running 10.4.1.1 that will not totally shut down after you tell it to. The finder will quit and the screen will turn blue, but that is all that happens. To make it shut down, you have to hold the start button for 5 seconds, then it will turn off. I've run disk utility, cocktail and onyx, but still nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

If you have not tried the "Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)"
procedure outlined here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 to see if
the odd behavior can be checked and fixed, I suggest you could try the one they recommend
for your computer on that site. Also, note there are a few other things to try first, shown there.

  • HT201177 My iMac won't fire up.  It shows a white screen and the apple with little dial going around but won't complete start up

I rebooted my iMac this morning and now it won't come back on. It shows a white screen with the apple and a spinning wheel.  Do I need to take it in?

More details needed, such as computer and OS. Step one is to restart—hold down the power button until it shuts off, push it again, and hold down the SHIFT key until it starts in Safe Mode. Report back.
As for taking it in, if this doesn't work, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • MacBook won't complete start-up after today's software update

The laptop was working fine, and while I was reading mail, using internet, etc. I got a message from Software Update that there was a Security Update for Intel based computers. First I did the iPhone update that also came today, then the security update and restarted. The computer hangs as soon as the Apple and the spinner appear. I did the fsck thing and it found nothing wrong. I started up from the system disk and ran Disk Utility and it found nothing wrong. I started up from the disk again with "d" and ran hardware test and it found nothing wrong. I did the Applecare disk too. Everything checks out fine -- but as soon as I boot from the hard drive, it hangs. What do I do now?

Something like this happened to my MacBook after installing iTunes 8 and the QuickTime update. I ended up having to rewind it with Time Machine. I wish I had a better answer.

  • One more iBook won't start. Please help...

    Hi,
I apologise for my English from the very beginning. Be patient please...
I see from older topics that I am having a rather common problem. I just got this iBook G3 900 MHz 12' 680 Mb RAM from Ebay. It lasted 5 days (working fine) and then it suddenly died.
I have already tried all possible key combinations for PMU resets and carefully read the help page in case when a portable won't start. No good.
Here are the synthoms more in detail: The battery would not charge (it has only 1 flashing light out of four and I was warned before it died that its charge level was getting low). The ibook now don't start, even with the power adapter hooked up.
If this can help, the ring light on the adapter cord is green when the battery is on, and removing the battery turns the light to amber.
I started reading Internet discussions and it sounded an DC in-board problem, and I've already found a replacement from a friend...
    BUT...
I did a further test tonight taking the battery for an identical ibook of a friend and when I put his battery on mine, it started up and kept being up only for me to see that the battery level was getting low low low --- dead again. Now, my friend is pretty sure that his battery was at least half-charged but to me it seems very strange that my ibook would drain away all power from a battery in 10 seconds. Can it be a short circuit ???
Back on Internet, I have discovered these Apple discussions, so before beginning unscrewing the whole ibook to replace the DC-in board (I understand this is not the easiest piece to change) I wanted to have your advice on something I might have missed with my "diagnosis".
Could it be the "famous" logic board everyone is complaining about ? The ibook was bought in August 2003 so I am still eligible for the replacement. Could it possibly be ? I though that ibooks with such a problem did boot up...
Sorry. I wrote too much. Thank you in advance for any help you might be willing to give me...
    ibook G3 900 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
No problems with your English whatsoever.
Have you tried your friend's adapter with the iBook? Was your iBook plugged into the adapter when it rapidly discharged your friend's battery? It could be an adapter problem. The adapter should show green when the battery is not installed, and amber when it is — exactly the opposite of what you are seeing. The amber light is supposed to indicate that the battery is charging. The green light means that it is NOT charging. When things are working right, the green light means the battery has stopped charging because it is completely charged. When things aren't working right, it just means the battery isn't charging — for whatever reason. Since your adapter is showing the lights the opposite of what it is supposed to do, it's an indication that it may not be working right.
These are the four most common possibilities when the battery will not charge:
    (1) there is something wrong with your battery
    (2) there is something wrong with your power adapter
    (3) there is something wrong with your power input board (the part that contains the port where you plug in the adapter)
    (4) there is something wrong with your logic board
To diagnose a bad DC-in board, you need to make sure it isn't the battery or the adapter at fault by swapping out first one and then the other, If it runs from a known good charged battery okay, but won't run from a known good adapter, then you are going to have to replace the power input board.
Usually, if it is a logic board problem, the iBook simply will not run from the battery. This happened to mine. The battery showed up in the battery status indicator. It was recognized by the computer and charged by the adapter (as shown by the battery status indicator). However, when I unplugged the adapter from the iBook, it was just like pulling the power cord from the wall on a desktop. The iBook immediately shutdown. Dead.
My husband’s problem was quite obviously the power input (DC-in) board because the adapter tip had broken off in the port. Often (and, sadly, in our case), this damages the power input board so that it no longer functions, necessitating replacement of the board as well as the broken adapter.
Your experience does not exactly match either of ours. It is my best hunch that if your adapter is not the problem, then it is the logic board and not the DC-in board at fault. However, this is not the problem covered by the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program.
Since you already have the extra DC-in board, if it proves not to be the adapter at fault, you may want to try installing the DC-in board, in hopes that will correct the problem.
    Good luck.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Restore from your back up, repair the Library and try again.

  • IBook won't start up all the way...

My iBook G4 has been great. But recently, I've experience a little trouble. Sometimes when it starts up, it seems to only startup part way.
Meaning, that none of my external connections work (iBook won't recognize any of my USB periferals like my printer and external mouse... and unfortunately my wireless internet connection is supported through a USB port, so when this happens, I can't log on to the internet!).
I've also noticed that when this happens, although I get my Mac OSX desktop, I don't see anything on the top-right-hand-side of the menu bar. So I do get my "apple" menu, and Finder, File, Edit, View, Go, Window, and Help on the left-hand-side, but nothing on the right (display control panel, volume indicator, Date/Time).
So, sometimes I start it and it starts up all the way and everything works fine. Other times I start it up, and I can't find my periferals, and I don't have anything on the right-hand sinde of the menu bar.
I have tried troubleshooting on my own by running Disk First Aid (everything checks out okay), and verifying and repairing my permissions. Doesn't help.
Any suggestions? Hopefully I can get some useful advice on this discussion board. If not, I will have to take it in for service.

    Hi mac824,
It sounds like some system corruption.
Download and reinstall the 10.3.9 Combined update. If that doesn't correct it, an Archive and Install should.

  • My ibook won't start up!

A couple of days ago I put the lid down on my 900 MHz G3 ibook to send it to sleep and it turned itself off completely as it often does.
Now it wont start up. The OS X start up screen appears with the blue bar gradually filling up and the words "Mac OS X starting up" written below but instead of loading and moving onto Finder it just sits there with a full bar. I have left it doing this for several hours, several times but without any joy. The cursor is visable and moves around fine, no beachball.
I have been through the troubleshooting document and tried reseting the PMU etc but I either did that wrong or it didn't work as nothing seemed to happen.
If this has happened to anyone or if anyone can shed some light on it it would be hugely appreciated.
    G3 ibook 900 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi, Matty.
Are you able to start up in Safe Mode? This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk, so please be patient.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.
If you are unable to start up in Safe Mode, then try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
    Good luck.

  • IBook won't get past the start up loading screen.

Ok, well, my iBook G4 stays in the loading start up screen where a folder is in the middle and changes from a question mark to the Finder logo. It stays there for hours. And if it eventually get to the Apple logo with the wheel dial on the bottom it takes another while to load. It once got fully loaded and started up to my desktop. But, since it would not respond and froze, I pressed the power button. I think I know the source of the problem, I downloaded uTorrent. I was very aware that downloading it was like begging for me to get a virus. So, then it froze up. Then, after many hours of waiting for my iBook to start up, I put the uTorrent file in the trash and emptied the trash can. Did I successfully delete the file from the computer? And if anyone can help, it would be very appreciated.

Any idea how old this iBook is?
Try starting the computer in Safe mode by holding the Shift key while booting.
Do you have the install discs for the machine?
