IBook won't sleep when cover is closed

When I close the cover it will not sleep. Only after a time it will sleep per settings in the energy saver. When I open the cover, it will not automatically awaken. Have to hit apple key a few times to awaken? Not the end of the world but would like to know why.

The reed switch is the likely culprit. It's in the right side of the display bezel, and is activated by a magnet in the right lower edge of the iBook. Unless you are rolling in dough, it's likely not to be worth the cost of repair. Probably money would be better spent toward a new MacBook if you can't tolerate the situation as it now exists.
Sometimes the reed switch sticks in the off position. At least, you can consider yourself lucky that the one in your iBook has stuck in the on position, so it's on all the time instead of off.
You can set the Energy Saver preferences to have it sleep quickly or simply remember to put it to sleep manually before closing the iBook if you decide to live with it, as-is.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when lid is closed and battery lights won't work?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 15" and ever since I got it, the battery indicator lights wouldn't light up (not that big of a deal) and the computer wouldn't sleep when I closed the lid.
I've reset the NVRAM/PRAM, the SMC and verified/repaired my hard disk as needed.  But the computer still won't sleep when I close the lid (regardless if the machine is plugged into a charger or not).  Is there a known fix for this problem?  I've been searching through the forums and troubleshooting from advice that other people have suggested, but nothing seems to be working.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • IBook won't sleep when lid closed

    Hi -
My iBook refuses to go to sleep when the lid is closed. It will sleep if I put it to sleep from the Apple menu, but never just from being closed. (And sometimes when I put it to sleep and then close the lid, it keeps waking up and making crunching noises.) I've tried everything I can think of to fix the problem, including: resetting the PMU, deleting a bunch of background programs, and reinstalling the OS. It's been doing this for about 6 months, and it's driving me crazy. Any ideas? Please help!

    Hi skywriter,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Has the iBook's case ever been opened? There's a magnet on the bottom side of the top case that activates the sleep switch. Hold a small magnet on the right side of the screen and see if it will sleep. If it does, the magnet isn't where it's supposed to be and will need to be replaced.

  • IBook Won't Sleep When Power Cord Is On/Charging

    Hi!
I have a problem putting my iBook to sleep. I can't put it to "normal" sleep manually or by closing the lid. It wakes up after a few seconds and then go to sleep again and then wakes up again, etc. It does this over and over again. However, I noticed that when I remove the power cord from my iBook, it goes to normal sleep but when I insert it back again, the problem recurrs. What could be wrong?
Also, I'm not sure this is related but I also noticed that the key "n" is not responding normally. I have to press it harder so that I can make it appear on the screen when i type and sometimes it types a lot of "n's" even when I'm not pressing it or pressed it only once, e.g. onnnnnnnce (I only pressed "n" once).
I am really confused...please help! Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jo-Ann,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Go to System Preferences > Power Adapter (from popup menu next to Settings For:; are the slides on never? You might want to try resetting the PMU (Knowledge Base Document #14449, which covers Resetting Powerbook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)).
I believe you key may be stuck. You should bring it to your local Apple Store/Reseller and have them take a look at it. If you are still having a sleep problem; they can look at that too

  • Macbook Pro running 10.6.7 won't sleep when lid is closed

My 2.2GHz 2007 15"Macbook Pro no longer goes to sleep when closing the lid. The laptop continually tries to wake, with the apple logo lighting up, along with the sound of the slot cd/dvd drive. If I leave the lid open, the laptop appears to sleep but the laptop sometimes seems to get very warm and if not plugged in will drain the battery down to nothing. The battery was replaced in the last 4 weeks but the problem existed before the battery change.

  • IBook will not sleep when lid closed

    Hi,
I recently had my Hard Drive replaced, the old one died. It was all covered by AppleCare and the repairs done at a Apple Authorised Outlet. After installing everything again I just found out that my iBook will not sleep when the lid is closed. The screen is still on and bright. Any ideas why? Is this dangerous? Any quick fixes?
    Cheers,
    Jack

    Jack,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to give the Apple Authorized Repair center a call back and let them know what's going on. I've seen this before here on the forums, and it was attributed to a sleep magnet not being put back in. It's most likely this. Apparently, putting this magnet back in can be easily overlooked.

  • Won't sleep when I close the lid - HELP!

A while ago, my iBook G4 1GHz was knocked off of a table. The display was smashed and the whole display assembly was destroyed. I bought a new (used) display assembly and installed it. Worked fine, but when I closed the lid, the iBook woudn't sleep. I checked the placement of the magnet in the top case and I reset the PMU. Still no sleep. So I contacted the company that sold me the display and got a different one. Still won't sleep when I close the lid. I checked all of the energy settings, reset the PMU and even tried to force sleep with a magnet from another broken iBook. Still no sleep when I close the lid. It will sleep when I choose sleep from the Apple menu (OS Tiger) and when it sits for a while with the lid open, but not when I close the lid. Any thoughts?

My original problem has not been solved. The iBook still won't go to sleep when I close the lid. I have checked out any possible software causes, and have ruled them out. I have checked to make sure no keys were being pressed when I closed the lid. I took a magnet from another iBook top case and ran it down the side of the display to try to force sleep. No effect. I don't have any Firewire or USB devices attached, to that's not it. Apple, this board, PBFixit.com, and my local Apple-affiliated repair center have no idea why I am having this problem. Two display assemblies have experienced this problem. The original display had been destroyed in a drop. Could some internal damage, like maybe to the logic board, result in such a problem? It's odd that I am the only person out there who has had this problem. Weird, to be sure.

  • Computer does not sleep when lid is closed

    Hey everyone,
Until about 15 minutes ago I had my powerbook G4 set to sleep whenever I closed the lid. Well, now it does not want to.
I installed a screensaver and used it for a little bit, and now uninstalled it.
The problem is, ever since installing and selecting that screensaver my computer won't sleep when I close the lid.
What is the process to restore this and get it so that it sleeps when I close the lid?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep when lid shuts or hit sleep

    Hey Everyone,
So after the latest update my Macbook pro no longer immediately sleeps after shutting the lid. It also won't sleep when 'sleep' is hit in the apple menu. It's actually really annoying as I need it for security.

  • How can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

how can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

If the machine is asleep, lid closed, and you plug in to an external monitor and an external USB keyboard, the machine will wake, anbd reconfigure the screen resolution for the external monitor, Once it has made this configuration change, you can open the lid and it will continue to address only the external monitor.  At least that's how my early MacBook Pro unibody 13" works. It seems to run a bit cooler this way. It gets quite toasty with the lid closed while doing anything demanding and you are more likely to hear the fan come on.  I have not seen any temps that would cause alarm, but I do get a high speed (6000 rpm), noisy fan sometimes with the lid closed, .
If you operate in the open-lid, external monitor only mode, if you deactivate the monitor for any reason, when it reactivates it will be running both screens, with all the navigation hassles this entails, so I generally set it not to deactivate the screen when in this mode.
Thus I agree with those who say that some of the cooling air is drawn in around the keyboard, the difference in cooling performance is observable.  If you activate istat pro, get the computer hot running in clamshell mode, and open the lid, you can watch the CPU temp drop by a few degrees C within a couple minutes.  It isn't a huge difference, but enough the lower the fan speeds.

  • MBP won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reset of the SMC solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs. Interestingly, the sleep indicator light pulses as if the machine is sleeping, but I can clearly hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so. This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

I would just buy a wall charger for the touch and leave your MBP alone. If you really only wanted to charge it from the MBP, just make sure it doesn't sleep when plugged into the power adapter.
