Ibook wont turn on.

my ibook wont turn on... plugged in, not plugged in, with the batter in, without the battery in... nothing. i closed it like i normally do, instead of shutting it down, and when i went to open it again, i got nothing. so i took out the battery to get it to shut down so i could restart. and when i went to turn it back on, nothing happened... nothing happens and it is really frustrating. i just got my ibook fixed about 4 months ago because it would shut down, now it wont stay on. does anybody have any ideas as to what may be wrong. i really hate taking it into the store, the genius' here are not always the most friendly.

I'm telling you. I have lost all faith with Apple. The old iBook I had, 800MHz G4, simply worked fine with no problem waking up or starting up, although it's just a bit slow. Now, I am super frustrated when it just couldn't wake up, either with the sleep light flashing or not, ie it's black screen initially and when I press the Power button once to get it back to life, it just stays black!!!
So the only thing to do is to force power down by pressing the Power button for 10 seconds. Then I press the Power button once to start up, but it just stays black screen. I've left my iBook in that state for a day now, hoping that it will come back alife. But no! And the worst is, I had a similar problem starting up from wake just the day before. I called the Help Desk and they advised me step by step, from taking out the battery, to pressing OptionsCommand+PR, and OptionsCommand+OC, and doing Apple Hardware Test. The iBook seems to just work fine while on the phone with them. And barely 3 hours later, the thing just couldn't wake up. I've powered down and up many times now, and I've left it powering up, but still black screen till now (one day already).
Finding out about resetting PMU on the support page, I've also tried that, but it still can't work.
And you know what? I've sent this unit for repair 3 times already! First they say it's the HDD problem, so they changed that. Then when it still happened, they say it's the logic board problem, so they changed that for me. And again when it happened, they changed another logic board for me. So now, it's the fourth time, what do you think I should do? I don't think going back changing another logic board will help!
I am in fact ****** off! If Macs are great, then why me? Why my iBook? I am telling this forum that we cannot accept a big corporation giving us sub-standard products. I've since read this forum carefully and found that many of us faced the same problem! We just cannot sit down idly and let the company get away with it. This is a warning to fellow users out there that face this same problem. Let us voice out our frustrations and make Apple give us some compensation for it. I say this because I depend on my laptop iBook for presentation to clients, and this happened exactly twice when I was in front of my clients. I don't mind losing face but can Apple compensate me for my loss of business and future business from my clients?
Voice out strongly your unhappiness to Apple now!

Hi! Try booting from the install disc and after the language screen go to the drop down menus and open the disk utility and repair the disk. Tom

  • Ibook g3 500mhz wont turn on

my ibook g3 500mhz 384mb of ram wont turn on at all
i press power and nothing happens i have tried two batteries and a power adapter but it still doesnt work i have also thried ctrl command power but still doesnt work when i reset the pmu all that happens is the caps and num lock keys light up but will not turn off and it still doesnt work help would be much appreciated ty in advance

If you can't start up from the Install disc, it is likely not a software problem.
If you are certain it's not the power adapter gone bad, then it may be the power input (DC-in) board or the logic board.
The power input (DC-in) board is the part of the iBook that contains the adapter port. Sometimes when it goes bad, the computer will continue to run on the battery until the battery's charge is depleted, but the bad power input board won't allow the computer to charge the battery and won't allow the iBook to run from the adapter. So once the battery is depleted, the iBook is dead. You can check this out if you know someone else with an iBook that takes the same battery as yours. Insert the known working and charged battery into your iBook and see if it powers up. If so, it's the power input board that's bad. If you don't know anyone with whom you can swap batteries (and adapters, to see if that may be the problem), if you are close to an Apple Store, a Mac Genius can check it out for you by trying a new battery in it. He or she can also try a different adapter to see if that could be your problem. We have two iBook G3 500 MHz computers, and the original round adapter on both of them wore out fairly rapidly. If the adapter has worn out, that causes the same set of events as a bad power input board. The iBook runs from the battery until the battery is dead, and then the iBook is dead, too.
The iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program (to which you refer in your Question #4) has a three-year time limit based on the original purchase date of the iBook. Since an iBook 500 MHz came out in 2001, it is undoubtedly past that three-year time limit.
I'd try to check out the other possibilities before opening the iBook.
    Good luck.

  • Help!! It wont turn on..

My phone was working untill i disconnected it from my computer, since then i have not been able to turn my phone on, the most i get from it is the apple logo for 1 second which subsequently disappears any thought? I'm at my wits end. I'v tried to reset, no such luck, wont turn on.

After reading a few posts on this issue, I'm beginning to think that something from the Software Update seems to be zapping everyone's iBook screens. I took did the full Software Update installs one night and since then my iBook screen refuses to work, despite all the advice I was given concerning it (removing the battery, zapping the PRAM, etc). The computer works perfectly fine, it just the screen no longer functions.
Now I suspect it has to have been some sort of hardware upgrade or something, because I've tried using various boot disks (like DiskWarrior) and the screen still doesn't work.
This is certainly turning into an epidemic!

  • Ibook will turn on if i pull a chip off board

I have multiple ibook g3's and all with the same problem. They wont turn on, its not dc-board, not power adapter, it is something to do with the logic board but i'm trying to narrow it down more. When i hit the power button i hear a very, very faint high pitched whine noise, occasionally it will power on if i let it sit long enough but wont turn back on again afterwards.
*I found that if i remove a small chip labled(4410,scxa,L14aa)from the area that connects to the dc-board, (underneath the suspend light, over to the right side) it will power up, charge, run on battey,go to sleep.* Actually i dont understand why though, if i re-solder that chip back in things dont work, if i replace the chip it still wont work, but if its removed eveything is working.
Does anybody know why?? and what does that chip do?
On the newer ibook g3 that chip is now named to IOR,317n,5l5e,si44100y
    Thanks
    Tyler

    Hey Tyler..,
I found that if i remove a small chip labled(4410,scxa,L14aa)from the area that connects to the dc-board, (underneath the suspend light, over to the right side) it will power up, charge, run on battey,go to sleep. Actually i dont understand why though, if i re-solder that chip back in things dont work, if i replace the chip it still wont work, but if its removed eveything is working.
So see the way that chip is attached to the logic board? It's a SMT 8 pin and 3 pins are all soldered to one huge land (conductive circuit board area) and 4 pins are soldered to another huge land. One pin is off on it's own. Those two lands are bridged by a large electrolytic capacitor. When I see that I think "power handling" and since the two chips are mirrored I'm thinking bipolar voltages involved and the pins off on their own are "gates".
So I'm thinking right away MOSFET power. I love those guys. Now I don't get a return on any of those numbers of on that chip you reference. Further down there's a similar situation and that chip is a FDS6612A If you Google that it comes back a 30V Single N-Channel, Logic Level, Power Trench MOSFET (the second return is a pdf and has a schematic of the chip. That sucker will sink 8.3 Amps! The cool thing about MOSFETs is that when the gate is triggered the junction resistance goes to near zero. That's why it can switch 8 amps without a gigantic heat sink.
Now not sure why your's boots without that chip but I'd be careful removing those chips. You'd be running bipolar chips single ended and that can't be good.
I'd look further down that board to the PMU99 (that's a generic designation from Apple for the PMU). On the other side of that board is a super capacitor. We've been talking about this and I've found a lot of bad ones especially in these older G3s.
    I'm quoting myself:
"I've recently seen problems with the super capacitors that hold the settings on the PMU99 (this chip controls all the power functions as well as a .. well read about it:
    http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1325401)
Here's pics of the capacitor that I just put one up here, it's from a 12" G4 1.2 GHz:
    http://www.photolava.com/view/d5pr.html
They're pretty distinctive, so hard to miss.
Here's the blowed up one from the 500MHz 12" G3
    http://www.photolava.com/view/d5pu.html
    Now that's blowed up"
BTW that's pretty impressive that you discovered that about that chip.

  • IBook wont fully start up

My iBook wont fully start up. It started to freeze about three days ago, my only way of unfreezing it was to shut it down with the power button. Someone recommend that I boot it back up by pressing shift when it turned on. I did that and it worked. However, I soon found out that by doing that I disabled my airport, sound, and iTunes. So i went and restarted my computer using the Mac 10.3X software already on my computer. That worked for a while but then my computer began to freeze again. I switched it off and now it won't fully turn on. At first it just made whirring noises, but after a while it would go to the grey screen with the apple and pinwheel. The screen then goes blue... and stays that way. I tried starting it up normally and i also tried starting it up with the boot again. Neither worked. Please please help me. I am a student and i can't function without a computer! Thanx

    Hey Alex,
Try pulling your Airport card and see if that changes anything.
    Then try safe mode:

other wise try booting into you CD/DVD OS installer and check the hard drive.

  • Ibook wont power up (help!)

My ibook simply wont turn on. When the power button is pressed, it makes no audible noise, but the caps lock light will light up when pressed. No other buttons have any response. It will only turn off when the power button is held for several seconds, and then when turned on it does the same thing all over again.
So far i've tried: resetting the PMU (multiple times), running the battery out until it turned off, then recharging, and unplugging and taking out the battery overnight. The charger is charging the battery normally.
I'm in Thailand at the moment and not near a mac center. I really only need it to boot a few more times, to get some critical data off of it, but i really need it to boot for that. Anybody got a plan?

Thanks Ronda. That's the article i used to try resetting the PMU, and the PRAM, and the ctrl command combo. none of which are helping, sadly...
I've seen in other forums that this problem is attributed to the laptop not coming out of sleep mode properly, which would explain why it's not even accessing the BIOS or doing any kind of motherboard power on check (if it was, it would have some kind of response when the power button is pressed, or perhaps let me boot from a recovery cd by holding c, but it does nothing. there is no delay whatsoever from the time i push power to when i can press capslock and have it light up.) But then again, it can't possibly still think it's in sleep mode after having the battery out overnight, can it? and the light on the front isn't flashing, so... who knows.
anyway, i'm really hoping it's not completely bricked. hoping....

  • Battery wont charge and isight camera wont turn on-macbook, battery wont charge and isight camera wont turn on-macbook

i bought a macbook from a guy and when i started it up... surprise it wont turn on if its not connected because the battery is not being detected.... then what i checked first was photobooth surprise the isight camera is not working... i searched in internet about smc but i do not understand it.... is there a way to recover it using the cd?

Try resetting the PMU - Resetting MacBook and MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC). If you have no success then you'll need to take it in for service or replace the AC adaptor if it's gone bad.
