  • IBooks Author, PhoneGap, or Baker Framework? - That is the question

We've developing an interactive picture book in iBooks Author that primarily uses iBA as the shell, with most of the content and interactivity done in the HTML widget. I'm using Hype (http://tumultco.com/hype) to create the HTML5 & CSS, and the book looks great ... in Safari on my Mac. The book works fairly welll in iBooks on the iPad, but there are glitches and some images break up during animation sequences. Reading through these forums and elsewhere, it appears that iBA is inconsistent in how well it handles HTML5 animations, transitions, and audio.
We're keeping images optimized (total iBA file will wind up being only about 25MB), re-using graphics when possible, and trying not to do too many things at once on the screen, but I'm starting to wonder if iBA is the best solution for publishing a picture book. Perhaps having a large HTML widget causes iBA to choke?
The point of all this is that I've been pondering other solutions: i.e., PhoneGap (http://phonegap.com/) and the Baker Framework (http://bakerframework.com/). These allow development in HTML and publishing on the iPad. PhoneGap and Baker Framework both use Apple's X-Code tool to create an application shell, which is then submitted through Apple's Developer Program (not iBooks' iTunes Producer / iTunes Connect method). Although these tools create "apps," some of the apps are being published as books in the iBooks store.
My inquiring mind wants to know:
== Anyone have any experiences, pro or con, with PhoneGap or the Baker Framework?
== Any caveats to know if using iBooks Author with HTML to publish a picture book?
== Does Apple decide if something submitted as an "app" is really a "book" and therefore gets sold via the iBooks store? Or, vice versa?
== Is there any way to submit an X-Code built app to the iBooks store without going through the Developer Program?
== Does Apple allow selling an app in the iTunes store and the iBooks store?
Just trying to pick your brains about the best, easiest, most appropriate route to get our picture book published successfully.
Thanks for reading this far... JP

    ....PhoneGap or the Baker Framework?
Haven't and wouldn't waste time w/PG. Both mean working with Xcode in the end. I prefer Baker FWIW.
== Any caveats to know if using iBooks Author with HTML to publish a picture book?
HTML would need to be stripped and reformatted/styled for use w/iBA. iBA is iPad distribution only, so you won't be reaching iPhone or touch owners.
== Does Apple decide if something submitted as an "app" is really a "book" and therefore gets sold via the iBooks store? Or, vice versa?
Apps are apps....books are books - two different programs. You decide which to take your chances with. I have 'books' in both.
== Is there any way to submit an X-Code built app to the iBooks store without going through the Developer Program?
Totally different programs. You can't submit an 'app' as a book unless you make it into a book and then you need to use either the free or paid books programs having nothing to do with a developer account.
== Does Apple allow selling an app in the iTunes store and the iBooks store?
Again, two different programs, registrations and processes. If you can make the same subject matter apply to, and work with/thru both, go for it with two efforts, but it won't be one thing in two stores.
For me, you haven't really made it clear what you want to do in the end, so these responses are primarily cached in my guessing what that may be, exactly.
Your skills, budget, timeline, resources and content-in-hand may well define only one option regardless...or none - who knows.

  • IBooks Author and iBooks

I am developing a book using iBooks Author (Version 2.1.1).  When the book is previewed on my iMac, the cover page (cover art) is displayed as a small image.   When I click on the book's image, the cover art is displayed larger for just a moment and then the book's contents are displayed.  Is there a way to see the cover page full size in iBooks under the iBooks Author Preview option?

A Preview is simply a basic PDF.
I suggest you export as an .ibooks file, then check that version instead, however, I think you've described the default for this process and note that the cover is not displayed when using the book.
If that's what you want, see this IBA User Tip: iBA Tips and Tricks 01 / How to make the cover image remain visible after the user opens the book...

  • IBooks Author Page Size Question

I would like to use iBooks Author to put together a book for print (instead of using InDesign which is not intuitive for photo placement). iBooks Author looks good and the templates seem to work very well, but I have found no way to specify total page size dimensions - specifically A4 (210 × 297 mm) in portrait orientation.
Also the PDF export - which I should be able to use for printing - has strange lines around the overall graphics (indicating larger actual document size?), and has a big watermark at the bottom reading "iBooks Author," which wouldn't be good for printing.
Can anyone give me instructions as to how I can:
    1) Specify page spread dimensions for the whole document (except for the cover which I will design separately)?
    2) Export to PDF in proper printing format without faulty document dimensions or watermarks?

    esagustin013,
Indesign as well as Quark are still the mainstream layout tools fore creating Print collateral...as of the latest versions of InDesign and Quark...both are beginning to introduce ebook production.
As for your last sentence, it is not true that both are beginning to introduce eBook production. Adobe InDesign has been doing that for a couple of years, along with PDF technology. Now it even gets much better and, it is true that it is getting more powerful. It is not recommended for novices to use these apps, so iBooks Author app is a very nice simpe app especially designed for iPad platform.
I would highly suggest you search for a tutorial pertaining to how to place images into indesign and how to minipulate them with your text boxes. Far more power in these programs...completely tailored for Print.
Again, last sentence, it is not true that it was completely tailored for Print production. Adobe InDesign app is a totally different app now than it was once developed for at the time when Adobe first released InDesign 1.0 some years ago. I can't believe how time flew from 1.0 to now CS5.5. However, you are correct it is very powerful professional layout app for print and even eBook production and even ePUB production and all. And even PDF files for web. Even it works just fine in iPad opening PDF files.
I am intrigued by iBooks Author is capable of making more interactive iPad iBook textbooks.
I am interested about what Adobe have to say about iBooks Author app.   I wonder if Apple eventually develop professional-grade layout app - more powerful than that of iBooks Author or iWorks app. I guess we'll wait and see. Probably not.

  • Workflow and uses for iBooks Author ?

    02-04-2012 Sat
Before I begin I want to thank the developer team from Apple for the last update. Now all the iBooks in my library are opening smoothly and the system is not locking up anymore. Thanks guys.
Besides the typical Questions, Problems, Suggestions, . . . I'd like to hear how others WRITERS are using iBooks and how they have incorporated it into their daily workflow.
I don't think there are many writers out there using iBooks Author as a complete replacement for their notes, outlines, and drafts. But, I would think that they would share some kind of common approach before publishing a book.
For me, I'm guessing you would need a good calendar to keep a schedule, a notebook to catch all your thoughts and some form of a word processor to organize your thoughts, create an outline, and start writing the chapters.
The combination of The iPhone, Siri, iCal and Notes seems to work perfectly to catch thoughts before they make it to a written page. Thank you Apple.
Entering text directly into iBooks never worked well for me. So I prefer to pre-write the copy and paste it into my iBooks file. To do this I use an app called iA Writer  but you always have the option to use Pages if you feel more comfortable in that environment.
I'm sure we would all like to think that we are going to start publishing books and make a lot of money. But odds of that happening are very slim. The point is to focus on the true strength of using iBooks Author and for me that is publishing my own content to my iPad.
Here are a few examples that I would like to share with you, if you have any others ideas please post your thoughts here.
Make your own List of Affirmations.
Once you read a book you can always write a review that highlights your thoughts at the time of reading.
Create a Menu or your own recipe book.
    Create scrapbook.
    Document a time period.
Use it as a business tool to distribute company information to clients.
A student can maintain class notes, highlight them, and create study cards.
Create some form of yearbook or travel log.
I recently made a complete timeline that includes all the major events in my life.
Don't forget you can use aperture to create a short introduction video explaining who you are and why you are publishing your book.
Well thats my list, I'd like to hear your ideas. Thanks for listening - John Franco

  • Errors and Omissions Insurance for iBooks Author books?

Book publishers often cover the author under their E&O policies.  What have you done with regard to your (nonfiction) iBooks published with iBooks Author?
    Thank you.

Thank you, El Guero.  I actually am an attorney - and I know that the disclaimers don't do much of anything.  Any E&O insurance carrier recommendations?
Btw, in addition to your list of possible causes of action, I'd add both copyright and trademark infringement, particularly in books that include audio and video (with or without voiceover and/or music).  The issues are not always noticeable to the untrained eye, and sometimes there is coincidental simultaneous development of ideas.  That's why most telelvision and movie studios don't accept (i.e., return without opening) unsolicited scripts or ideas from the general public - too much risk of a claim down the road for a similar concept developed independently by the studio.  I'm still going to want E&O insurance though.  Thanks!

  • Charges for iBooks Author Developers

    Dear All,
How do I charge my iBooks Auhtor Developers and How do I price my book ??
    Here are the details below:
VOLUME: I have volume of about 20 Maths and Science Books each books has a pages of about (~300-375) which are Print PDF.
PROCESS:  Planned to recreate them using iBook Author by flowing page by page ( I don't see any better process to automate the PDF content to flow with in  iBooks Author).
ENHANCEMENT: Using best designer/content presenter to add widgets.
HTML 5:  Adding best interactivity function using HTML 5.
ESTIMATED PROJECTION & PRICING: I usually charge Per Hr for programmer, developer and designer for which my competition charging in Pages; so this time I am planning to charge by per page(Print PDF) development - total page goes about 375 page X 20 books = 7500 Pages.  Whole project comes to around USD 93000.00 ( USD 12.5/page) in 25 Working days.
Please advice. Either I need to redefine Process or Pricing – Else the estimation is Okay.
And Kindly let me know the price for my Apple text books(375 pages[Math or Scienc]).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

USD $12.50/pg for an interactive math/science book ($3750.00) seems low. An iOS App with that much content could cost from three to +five times that amount... If you are looking at a project with multiple books, it might be fair - round up to $100k.

  • Does the iBooks Author support Right-to-Left languages?

    Hi,
I wish to know if the iBooks Author support languages which are written from Right to Left, such as Arab, and Hebrew.
Moreover, can it show those foreign letters?
Does it look okay, or unorganized?
And another small thing - can you upload a textbook, written by yourself, to your iPad without having a developer account?

iBooks Author can certainly display RTL scripts, but it has various bugs which make it unsuitable for composing them for many users.  There is no setting for text direction and cursor operation is broken, making editing extremely difficult.  Copy/paste may work sometimes, but iBooks has been reported to misplace characters and have other problems.

  • Page orientation when printing from iBooks Author

I have a iBooks document, all in portrait orientation. If I print this doc then it is printed in landscape even if I change the orientation to portrait within the printing interface. iBooks somehow is stuck to landscape when printing.
Who has got a solution to this?

Are you trying to ask for help in the forum or to file a bug?
I'm hoping that someone here has figured out how to control the orientation when exporting to PDF. I haven't been able to find a way to do that.
while there is no formal bug reporting method similar to what devs have w/apps, iBA does have a 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item.
Actually, there is: the Apple Developer Program. I have submitted a number of bug reports for IBA there, and have received timely and constructive responses from the development team.
Good luck and welcome to iBA.
I've been using IBA since it was released, as you well know.

  • Is it possible to animate a picture in ibooks author?

Is there any way to animate a photo or drawing in ibooks author.  For example: have a person's eyes blink.

An html widget (created with adobe edge or other means) would take up the whole screen when the user taps on the widget. Probably not the localaized effect you're looking for. Another way could be to use a keynote presentation with an animation that starts when the user taps on it. None of these solutions are ideal. If your book has a lot of these types of effect, you're better off developing an app or using another tool than IBA.

  • PDF to iBooks Author Learning's

    Calibre might work.
The dual column could be an issue though.
If it doesn't work, here's a "How To Geek" article on the topic.

  • X Across iBooks Author page

I'm puzzled.  I just recently imported a Word document as a section and found that there is now a giant "X" across the entire page (with the imported content showing underneath) and a "?" at the heart of the "X".  Does anyone know what this means and how to get rid of it?

  • Inserting multimedial "footnotes" or similar pages in iBooks Author

we are about to develop an ibook with ibook author.
some information might be well known to the most of the users.
    but to some not.
so we want to insert multimedial pages to explain certain facts. these facts should only be accessed if needed. i.e. they shouldn't appear if one marches straight through the application.
any idea how to put this in action?
    thanks

Links are a two-step process that includes both a bookmark and a hyperlink.
Confirm your process via iBA Tips and Tricks 01 / Hyperlink two words/text
As for templates, you have to start with one, whether it comes from Apple or a 3rd party. See the tip at that same page about a childrens' book example.

  • How are you Using iBooks Author and Samples

I'm curious to see how everyone is using iBooks author to create books. Are most people copy/pasting content into their book or are they directly writing the content in the book? How many have just imported the information from another word processing program? Who is using the program for creating books for children, entertainment or work-related functions?
And that being said, I'm also interseted to see samples of how the books of others look on the iPad, including if possible the children's books, entertainment books or the work-related books. (Including how they incorporated widgets, theme in the pages, fonts, etc)
Me personally, I have been developing two books using iBooks author for work related fuctions. The first book is a training manual for a software program; the second book is a guide to all the reports that can be created in the software program. Both books have been well received by clients.

I generally find that, for creating the text, I'm better off with the word processor of my choice. That way, I get to focus on content and structure and I don't get distracted by layout and formatting issues. While working in the word processor, I use only the simplest of styles. (Logical styles rather than visual ones, the equivalen of HTML <H1>, <H2>, etc.
Once I'm happy with the text and I've done the copy editing, I import into the page layout program and do the layout.
    Cheers,
    Michi.
