IBooks Author help persists in opening in French.

After downloading iBooks Author, help opened once, the first time, in English.  Ever since it persists in opening in French.  I have quit and restarted app a number of times, but always opens help in French.  I can see the web page in English, but not help.
Thanks.

I belive you are refering to the help files accessed by opening the iBooks Author app, and then selecting from the Menu bar at the top: Help > iBooks Author Help. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Those help files seem to derive their language from the preferred ones in the current user account language preferences. If you open the System Preferences app, and select Language & Region, what is listed under Preferred Languages? If French is on the list, and you don't ever use the language, try removing it. If removing it is not an option for you, at least drag it to the bottom of the list.

    (1) My iBooks Author help resources are in a foreign language. How do I change it to English? (2) Is there an iBooks Author pdf manual I can download?

There is no PDF available. I sent a link  to a page full of links and info not much different from the help files.
There are many Free books in the iBooks store which will take you through the basics of iBA.
I  like "Create your first Interactive book using iBooks Author"   its created by iBook-Widgets.com - who also  supply widgets at a price.. but the book is very free and very good.. search the iBooks store for their title.
You cannot use iBA on an iPad, however, I also use the iPad app --  "Book Creater"   ( redjumper.net ) its very low priced around $3 or so. The people who  create it are helpful and friendly. You can distribut your books to friends and family  using  Dropbox or other cloud storage. If you want to creaet an ePub file and then upload to the iBooks store, its not difficult.  You create the book on your iPad. It is no where near as good as iBA for functionality.. but it spossible to  make really good eBooks.
I think Applecare shoud come into effect with the language problems if it can be  found to be a glitch on the computer.  Applecare is product based and does not apply to software.
Take it stage by stage,   visit your Apple store and   ask if they can solve the help files in langauges first, then  react to the answer, it could be they can solve the issue which leave you a clear path with iBA.
Also you can  gather more indormation about how to use it with the help files.
Try the info I have  included and   see how it develpops... any problems get back here and we can look for alternatives.
    try this... https://itunes.apple.com/app/id661166101?mt=8&&referrer=click%3Da63089e4-e3d4-49 e9-896a-58e0cfd50acf
its the free version... if you like upgrade later.
Happy New Year... hope its a good one....

  • Ibook author 2 will not open file created in ibook author

ibook author 2 will not open file created in ibook author.  How can I find out what is causing this?  I read it might be a video file, but can't find out which one.
    TIA

There should not be a simple issue just because of versions, I think.
You may have a corrupted asset, as you seem to think. In that case, it's up to you to dig into the exact cause, sorry.
Did you call support for this yet?

  • How can I import an ibook file back into iBook Author?

I exported an ebook from iBook Author thinking it is the equivalent of saving the file.
I did not save the file, I only exported it and than exited the program.
    My active file is vannished.
I need to make some adjustments to the ebook, but can not bring it back up.
Is there a way that I can re-import the iBook file back into iBook Author?
When I open iBook Author and try to open the exported file the program does not recognise the ibook file...
    Thanks for your help!

Check for previous versions of that book in iBA....even if not saved.
You can dig into the .ibooks file by changing the suffix to zip, but you'll have to manually extract what you can from assets you find. Please only do this with your own books.

  • IBook Author interface *****

I've written several books and used several different pieces of software over the years. None has the issues I've found with iBook Author.
Most technical books will have numbered figures, equations, and tables. And these will be cross-referenced.
It took hours to find out how to put in Figure numbers (like Figure 1.1) and even longer to find out how to cross reference them. The six templates don't have enough examples to show how to do this, and the iBook author help doesn't even have cross-reference as a help topic.
This is really enough to make me use something else for an ebook of any description.
Sorry Apple - after over 20 years of great products, this one is one of the worst out of the box that I've seen.

Its a bit late  for this thread... but.. being new to iMacs and iBooks Author... I can share the frustration of trying to make sense of iBooks Author. It seems a clone of  Pages rather than a new application concept to capitalise on the lates eBook fad. I have delivered books to iBooks.. 2 weeks later.. problems.. I repair that problem and re-deliver.. more than 2 weeks later.. back again for "format" problems. now it will be another two weeks to get either a book last of Xmillion others in iBooks store IF I am lucky.. or another knock back that needs a re-work. WHY.. when  the original delivery was scrutanised.. did my poor workmanship not  get a mention  and   then all issues could be dealt with .. meaning less work and problems all round!
I cannot open the ticket now..it wont open so I have to report that back now and wait  again. Then there is the farce of "Contact US" . Its a select  this or that option.. not able to add a cooment or question.. and again. now its another wait to be told.. I did it wrong and contact ?????
Having found this  forum,, I think I have the answer ( at least for this ticket)  which I  think is  blocking the portrait mode when viewing  pictures in a photo book.
I  purchased Book Creator for a few $ - it offered three basic  book formats  and it auto displays portrait or landscape ( albeit in reduced size) why cannot  this be default in iBA??
I think the fact is that iBA was created for the written word not photo pictorials.... BUT an addition to the coding could create a portrait and landscape template. Which I feel sure APPLE's software enginneers could knock out during a coffee break!
Maybe  feedback and a few updates will address these issues...

  • Best workflow practices for iBooks Author re Enhanced Books?

    Hi
I have already published one Enhanced iBook in iTunes (The Wandering Gorillas) about my research in Rwanda.  I am now working on several others which will contain much more interactive media - photos and video.
I have vast amounts of unique photos and video - which would be useful for education purposes. So, 'where fools rush in...' I began to creat a new Enhanced iBook with lots of rich media.
However, I immediately started to have serious problems as the fille sizes grew very large - due to the many images and especially because iBooks Author creates versions etc.  Thanks to solutions provided on another post by Pondini & Linc Davis these problems have now been resolved and I have regained my 'lost' 100 GB - which had been gobbled up into the folder DocumentREvisions and private/var - you can read their solutions here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22800295#22800295
Now, I wish to avoid the same problems - and try to get the best possible workflow to use when creating Enhanced iBooks - which contain lots of rich media files such as photos and video.
And so I am asking advice form anyone who has created such iBooks using iBooks author - or who is an expert in the finer workings of this software.
First -  Since Apple restrict the final iBook size to 2 Gb (and recommen smaller) I am considering creating my new iBook via separetly published chapters - so that each will be less than the max 2GB.  Obvioulsy these will have to have some 'stand alone' usefulness!
But, is this a good practice? has anyone done this? Is there any way for the separate chapters to be later combined - by the user - in order to have a complete, coherent book?
Second, re image file sizes.  For best quality on their new Retina Display iPads Apple suggest images of (No larger than ) 5000 x 5000.  I used this - and it produced image file sizes of 20 -30 MB.  I did some other trials - using images of 1024 x 1024 max - and on my iPad 2 (non Retina) my failing eyes could not see any difference?  Their file size was reduced to 2- 300 KB
Would the difference be  obvious on a Retina Display though?  Should we use the largest possible resolution (and file size) - but this has serious implications for the eventual overall iBook file size.
    What is the best compromise?
Third,   I have an iMac with an i7 250 Gb Flash drive and a separate 1TB hard drive.  All my 'media assets' are on the 1TB hard drive. The still images are exported from my various Aperture libraries - as jpegs of the size mentioned above (and into a newly created folder) .  Same with video - to Apple's recommendations for video replay on iPads.
So far I have kept and used the actual iBook Author file - for the new book - on the desktop of my 250GB i7 Flash Drive.
But, as I reported in the other post, this soon caused me huge problems as my disk space was rapidly 'eaten up' by duplicate versions etc.
I am now considering using a separate, 1Tb Firewire External drive for the actual iBook Author file (with backup copies onto another 1TB drive) I am certain this will be slower than using my internal flash drive - but is this 'good practice?'  Can it avoid the problems of all 'lost' storage space which caused me such hassles when using my flash drive?  Or, will this be minimised if I create separate iBooks from separate chapters?
And, delete uneccessary versions of course!
I do feel that this is an emerging issue which many will face - as we incorporate more and more rich media into our iBooks.
Any help or suggestions are gratefull received!

Thunderstorm played havoc with box from my ISP - and I am ruuning on a reserve and internet access flaky!
but, here goes with one reply.  Will have to wait later re tests for your other suggestions when weather calmed down
Re   'as Apple suggessted'   I should have said - no larger than 5000 x 5000 pixels (the 3240 was my vertical proportional dimension from choosing 5000 horizintal dimension)
this is from Ibooks Author help
Add and edit photos and other images
You can add a photo or other image (in a supported file type) to a page in your book by dragging the photo from theMedia Browser, the Finder, or another application.
After adding a photo to your book and positioning it on the page, you can use the tools in iBooks Author to mask (crop) the photo; change its brightness, contrast, and other image qualities; or erase its background.
Important:  When you export your book for distribution outside the iBookstore, images are automatically scaled to a width of 2048 pixels, which is optimized for iPad with Retina display. Readers can view these images on other iPad models, but the viewing experience might be slower. You can improve the viewing experience on iPad models without Retina display by using images no wider than 1024 pixels.
    ShowMask (crop) a photo
ShowChange a photo’s brightness, contrast, and other settings
ShowRemove the background or unwanted elements from a photo
Important:  Images can’t be larger than 25 megapixels (5000 x 5000 pixels) or 50 MB.

  • How to copy/paste texts/images from webpages in iBooks Author?

    Hi,
I want to copy/paste text/image contents from webpages with iBooks Author, somehow images can't be copied, only texts can be copied with copy/paste editing. Wonder if there are any ways to include images with simple copy/paste?
Tried to search iBooks Author help, could not find answers. Please help.
    Thanks

Perhaps the people who spent a lot of time and money to produce the websites.....and who own copyright ...don't want anybody using their work without payment or credits. Have you contacted the websites owners to ask permission?
IF any person(s)  use anything from websites without permission apart from being to lazy to email to request permission....could face a legal action if and when the sites owners fins out.
There is another her misconception that "free" websites and content on "social media" such as the dreaded FaceBook....can be used without consequence. Almost all "free" websites are common licence material - which requires permission and those who give permission do so only for personal or none profit reproduction.
i Use a blocking script on my websites which apart from preventing a right click...those who try are whisked off  my website to the the UK copyright website page which explains my rights!
You may wish to check out your iBooks contract with Apple and read their warnings on use of others copyright material.
You could ..and should contact the websites...explain what you want to use and why....and ask them if they can supply media.

  • Video files in ibook author

Hi there, i am working on ibook author and I cannot add some of my quicktime video files, i get an error that says file type not supported, ive tried adding it as a widget, dragging it onto the work area as well as importing a media file
    Nazneen

From iBooks Author Help "With the Media widget, you can add a video file with the extension .m4v (H.264)..." I suspect you are using a different format. Go to Help type in video and see what your options are. All the best. - Fabe

  • Why do I have to use iPhoto to add photos to iBook Author?

As a photographer my photos are all in Lightroom and I use Photoshop.  I don't own and don't intend to own Aperture and have long since stopped using iPhoto.  While I love Apple products and own lots of them, I don't want to have to maintain a separate system just to use iBook Author.  I've been wanting some time to play with this for ages and have some ideas for books that I really want to play with but ....  photos and video are an issue for me.  I don't use iMovie either, I use either Final Cut Pro or Premiere.  Please, please tell me there is another way to use media with iBook Author???
    Frustrated ....

    Hey Herbgarden,
Media can be dragged from the Finder or from another application directly into iBooks Author.
You can also add media files (such as images) to a page by dragging them from the Media Browser, the Finder, or another application.

  • Can't open my book in progress (an ibooks author file) after updating to ibooks author v1.1. Help!

I've been working on an ibook in author now for 2 months. I've had some upds and downs with the format, but finally have a product that's close to finished. I updated my ibooks author software to 1.1 yesterday and now I can't open my file. Please help!!!!

The only people who can read your book in .ibooks format are people with an iPad, and an iPad cannot read a dvd.  So you should probably export it as .pdf.

  • How to create Protein or Chemical structures in .pdb or .mol format for use with iBooks Author. Please help.

    Dear Community,
There are a large variety of software packages used by Chemists and Biologists to view and manipulate Protein and Chemical structures in 3D. They typically have formats such as .pdb, or .mol. I have looked around and none of the software packages that I currently use allow me to export to the COLLADA (.dae) format.
Does anyone have any idea where to begin to allow me to do this. I would like to try and put in some of the 3D objects into the iBook Author program.
    Thank you. Chase

I believe that Apple should have provided an easily way to get Pymol images into iBooks Author as VRML has been the de facto standard.  After a number of days, I have a method which works, but this much effort should not be necessary.  Anyway here it is.
    1)  Set the viewport in Pymol to 512,384 to do this in the command window type
    viewport 512,384
Note, I'm not totally sure you need to do this.
    2) Draw you image in Pymol and output the image in VRML format, to do that
    File -> Save Image As -> VRML 2 ...
I'll assume that you have given the file the name "pymol_output", you actual get pymol_output.wrl
    3) In a terminal window go to the folder where the above file is located and issue the following command.  This removes some stuff that messes up the lightening
    sed '9,15d' pymol_output.wrl > bender_in.wrl
    4) Next you need blender.  You can download it from
    http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/
    5)  Open Blender.  In the upper right corner in the Scene section
right click on Lamp and delete it
right click on Cube and delete it
right click on Camera and delete it
Save this file so you don't have to do this every time.  I called mine empty_blender_file.blend
    6) Either open empty_blender_file.blend or continue from #5 and read in the file from #3
    File -> import->X3D Extensible 3D (.x3d/.wrl)
    this reads in the file
    7) Write out the file in collada .dae format
    File->export->collada (.dae)
Done.  This file will read into iBooks Author and have somewhat uniform lighting.  By the way, .dae files can be opened an checked in Preview.  Its easier than going back and forth into the iPad, since you can rotate the image in Preview.
Hope this helps, let me know if it works for you and if you have any suggestions.
Finally someone needs to write a one step VRML and X3D to collada converter that will work with PyMol and Chimera etc.
    Have fun!

  • Why do I need Pages 5 to open iBooks Author documents?

I am a TA at a college and I have been grading students' iBook submissions for a class.  However, this week when I went to open their submissions I got the following error message: "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document."  Clicking the "Learn More" button sent me to the Pages 5 website, which said I had to pay $20 for Pages.  I do not currently have Pages on my computer (MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.5). Do I really have to pay $20 to do my grading? Is there any way around this? Can the students save their submissions as an older version?

I've just had this issue. Edited an .iba file on a different computer and then when I tried to open it again on my old iMac that it was originally created on it gave precisely that error: You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Google points to this webpage, but all the answers above miss the point the op was making which is that iBooks Author is giving a stupid error message. The fix was to update iBooks Author to the latest version on my old computer. (Basically the other mac had a more recent version of iBooks Author on it.)
What a waste of a morning, installing the hideous Yosemite, fixing the god-awful look of the thing, upgrading pages (unnecessarily it seems), and finally getting iBooks Author upgraded.
Anyway, I hope this answer might help others avoid similar.

  • My Ibooks author will not open a file

I have an Ibooks author file that will not open.  How can I open the file to edit it?

In that case, if the file isn't locked and/or owned by another user, and you don't see any errors when trying to access it, all I can imagine is that it is somehow broken/corrupted.
If you don't have a backup to try instead, you may want to contact Apple for iBA support and see if they can help....that, or walk your MB into the nearest Apple Store and see what they think.
    Good luck in any case.
