IBooks Author not saving templates

I am not able to save an iBook Author file I am working on (.iba format) to an iBooks Author Template (.ibatemplate) via File > Save as Template. I can go in and change the extention and then see the file in the Template Chooser view, but this seems like an unusual hack AND I get no preview for the template.
Anyone else experienceing this issue.
I am on version 2.1.2 (462) on OSX 10.9.3.

The normal process involves saving so that your creation is saved to 'My Templates'. That assumes you want it to show in the template chooser.
I've never tweaked the file name suffix.

  • IBooks Author (not responding)

In Activity Monitor I see why my IBA is so slow; it is listed as "not responding" in red type. I don't know what causes this, but it spends more time NOT responding than working. Any clues?
    Thanks

The problem is with the auto-versioning feature of Mac OS X Lion, iBooks Author, and the size of your large file (1.4 gb). Close that file and I suspect your perfomance problems will go away.
    Rebuilding won't help.
My suggestion is to leave the video placeholders, remove the videos for now, complete the books, then add the videos back in right before publication.

  • Open iBooks Author with NO template?

It seems that it doesn't matter whether we choose "New" or "New from template browser" from the File menu, we always get the Template browser.  I would like to start out with a truly blank document and build it up from scratch rather than having to tear apart one of the existing templates.
Can we create a BLANK template - even manually?
    Thanks,
    Tim

Having the same problem. I can't seem to delete the front matter that I do not need—Intro Media, Glossary.

Word is telling me file is "write protected" and other files tell me I don't have "permission" to save them. Help! Thanks

    Hello,
Try repairing the disk permissions by doing the following :
To open Disk Utility, from the Applications folder, open Utilities and then double-click the Disk Utility icon.
In the column on the left, click your startup disk.
Click the First Aid Tab tab, and then click Repair Disk Permissions.Disk Utility will reset any files and folders with incorrect settings.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT5116 iBooks Author: Can You Co-Author on Multiple Machines?

I am trying to have 20 students contribute chapters to an anthology of folk tales...not finding a way to export/import iBookAuthor chapters or pages from one machine to another. Is this possible? I appreciate any info. Thanks.

I am trying to have 20 students contribute chapters to an anthology of folk tales
Very simple,  discuss the needs of teh book and ask each to create a chapter and allocate  who does Chapter 1...and repeat for each chapter.
.not finding a way to export/import iBookAuthor chapters or pages from one machine to another
Very easy - each  student and yourself needs  to download and install teh free app "Dropbox"  there are others - this is the best IMHO - each  student  then uploads their chapter to Dropbox.  The  other and maybe easier way if  everytbody is meeting in  a "classroom" is the inevitable USB!
One ( or more ) person is designated as editor and  pulls down the  chapters from  drop box using the links or public folder access.  Once gathered on  one machine, thay are assembled in iBooks Author.
    How  to create the book?
The  first essential is  to decide which template to use.  Will  it be a standard freebie or will it be  editted and customised to your own design.
Once the template is completed - it is  saved as a template and  save again as template  "yourname1"
Now you have  two  copies on standby.  open as an iBooks Author from the template and save as ( whatever your books is to be named). Each student then gets a copy of that file... by same process of using Dropbox or USB
The editor ends up with 20  files and  if each  uses  its designated chapter number....
Have all your  20 chapters available  and simply copy and paste into the  book  tree on the left.
After the first  past- delete the  original  chapter 1 - you paste becomes Chapter one  - now repeat the process.
Its  quite easy  really. I suggest you create a few chapters in  a Test book and then open another different template as test 2 and start copying and pasting  chapters to get the  hang of it.
The book as a whole now needs editting   if you intend to  have a glossary and maybe  tweek or correct  anything in the other  chapters.

  • IBooks Author markets

    Hi,
Is the iBookStore for iBooks Author-made books open and ready worldwide? Or just for the US? I am meaning paid ibooks, not just free ones.
    Thanks.
    Ignacio

if iBookStore is available in one country is ALSO available for textbooks made with iBooks Author, not just regular EPUBs and fixed-layout EPUBS?
Yes. Whether the book is in ePub or iBooks format doesn't matter.

This is weird...  Ibooks Author appears in Launchpad but I cannot find the app anywhere, and so I cannot add it to my dock.  Any clues?

  • Media placeholders not working in iBooks Author

I'm using an iMac with Yosemite OS 10.10.1 and iBooks Author 2.2 (both completely up to date)
I've set up media placeholders in the page templates and saved them, but on the pages themselves the placeholders are not activated.
When I drag in a new image it just lands on the page as a separate image, not in the placeholder.
When I hover over the placeholder on the page, it tells me it is a 'media placeholder'.
I've tried various formats of image. I've tried removing and reapplying the placeholder attribute. I've tried closing and restarting the application. Nothing seems to work.

    Hi superted2uk,
Thanks for your question.  In the resource below, the instructions for adding a placeholder include an option in the inspector to select "Editable om pages using this layout."   Can you check to see if this is enabled on the placeholders you created?
iBooks Author: Add placeholders to a custom template or layout
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2764
iBooks Author: Add placeholders to a custom template or layout
All templates include placeholders that make it easy to add your own text and media. If you create or modify a template or layout, you can define your own placeholders.
You can define media or text placeholders on individual pages. If you want a placeholder to be part of a layout (so it appears whenever you use a particular layout), follow the instructions in “Add a placeholder to a template layout,” below.
To help manage placeholders in a book, you can add tags (names) to them. The media and text placeholders included in the layouts already have tags (Body, Main image, or Objectives), which you can change if you like. You can also create your own tags.
Tagging a customized placeholder enables you to use it in other layouts throughout a book and makes it easy to switch layouts. For example, suppose you create a layout with a placeholder for a graphic in the upper-left corner and another layout with the placeholder in the upper-right corner. If you tag the placeholder “Planet image” in both layouts, the graphic always appears in the correct location, no matter which of the two layouts you use.
    Define a media placeholder
Drag a photo or movie from the Media Browser or Finder to a book page.
If you can’t add the item, it might not be in a supported file type.
Modify the object with the properties you want the placeholder to have, and select the object.
Choose Format > Advanced > Define as Media Placeholder, so that a checkmark appears.
To stop using the object as a placeholder, choose Format > Advanced > Define as Media Placeholder, so that the checkmark disappears.
    Define a text placeholder
Format the text the way you want it to look, and select the text.
Don’t select the final paragraph break character, or the entire paragraph is deleted when the placeholder text is replaced. To see paragraph break characters, choose Show Invisibles from the View pop-up menu  in the toolbar.
Choose Format > Advanced > Define as Placeholder Text, so that a checkmark appears.
To stop using the text as a placeholder, choose Format > Advanced > Define as Placeholder Text, so that the checkmark disappears.
    Change placeholder text
After you create a text placeholder, you can modify its default text. For example, you can insert “Lorem ipsum” text to make it obvious that the text is placeholder.
Select the text in a text placeholder and choose Format > Advanced > Enable Placeholder Authoring.
Type the text you want to appear in the text placeholder.
Choose Format > Advanced > Disable Placeholder Text Authoring.
Add a placeholder to a template layout
If the Layouts pane isn’t open, choose Show Layouts from the View pop-up menu  in the toolbar.
In the Layouts pane, select a layout.
On the book page, select the object you want to make a placeholder.
In the Layout inspector, select “Editable on pages using this layout.”
To add a tag to the placeholder, choose an option from the Tag pop-up menu or type your own text.
To make the placeholder appear in portrait orientation (if you are using a landscape template), select “Shared with portrait layout.”
To stop using an object as a placeholder, select the object and deselect “Editable on pages using this layout” in the Layout inspector.

Let me know if this helps, or if I've misunderstood your question and need more clarification.

  • Can't Save as Template in iBooks Author 2.1.2

I've only just now tried to save as template in this version. This is what it used to do:
Replace the .iba extension with .ibatemplate.
Change to the iBooks Author Templates folder so that you can save there.
Now it doesn't do either of these. When you select File > Save as Template..., it presents the folder where the .iba file has been saved and does not change the extension.
Manually changing the extension and putting it in the templates folder gives it a generic Pages document icon in the Template Chooser. However, it can be opened as a template through this dialog. The title of the document is Untitled, just like it would be if a template were chosen.
    Has anyone else seen this?
    I have lodged a bug.

Thanks both Arnis and Mike --
Interesting suggestions from both of you.
Arnis, we're putting the cleanup utility on the back burner for the moment, since in our company, we can get in trouble using third-party software. However, it's good to know about this utility and we will use if it we have to. (Occcasionally we are forced to put our careers on the line for issues like this...)
Mike, we created a folder called "PDFSettings" in the 7.2 "fminit" folder and copied over the six joboptions files from 9.0.  Rebooted, rePDFed and voila, that worked. (Mind you, we can't say for sure that's what worked, because as I said in my original post, the simple act of rebooting "sometimes works, sometimes not...")
Eventually this problem will go away by itself because eventually we will get rid of 7.2 -- it's only deadline time-crunches that have made us reluctant to jump fully-clothed into 9.0...
I really appreciate the two of you taking your time to offer suggestions and help. I can't imagine life in the FrameMaker world without you!
    Cheers,
    Gay

  • How Do I Create a New Template for iBooks Author?

Apple's provided templates are way too narrow for some of the ideas I want to implement. I do not see any real method for creating a template from scratch. I stripped one of the available templates down to nothing and rebuilt some of the pages and then selected Save As Template... but iBooks Author keeps the original template as the content instead of allowing me to use my own created Chapter, Section, and Pages with the Add Pages.. Button.
How to you create a new template from scratch? I think it is absurd if you can only create a new template from one of the 6 predefined templates.

Be careful on unlocking and deleting stuff, cause this very easily can destroy the layout and your current arrangement
About dimensions, If i am not mistaken, i read on another thread that this cannot be happen.

  • I created a book at the Ibooks author. But there are pages where the number of the page does not appear. How I can solve this problem? I thank you very much for any tip.

I created a book at the Ibooks author. But there are some pages which the number of page is not visible. What can I do to see the number of the page?

    Have you changed the template?
Some pages may not have numbers in place as default.  If you have changed the page or the template page, you may have added a object which as pushed the number out of view, or an image may be in a layer on top of the text.
If you select one object on the page...then go to Edit, select all, you should see the outlines of any content no matter that content may not be seen. Look at the bottom for a page width rectangle outline.. IF its there, you need to shuffle the content until you find that box, and use Arrange > bring to front.

  • I created some iBooks in iBooks Author, but when uploaded to iPad, cover graphics do not change when opening different books; they remain on same graphic from book to book even though content changes accordingly. Solutions?

I recently created a number of books using iBooks Author. They are all part of a larger project, but due to size issues, individual sections were broken up into separate e-books. Each one of these e-books has different content and different cover graphics to differentiate between sections. Once finished, I exported each of them as iBooks and then uploaded them to my iPad. On the Books screen, all the iBooks show up just fine with the appropriate cover graphic and titles. When I select one to enter, its cover graphic zooms in and then the book opens into the table of contents. However, the second book I open always reverts to the cover graphic from the first book I entered. It will access the right content, but the cover graphic pulls up as the wrong section, which may lead to some confusion (given the manner these books will be distributed). After leaving it alone for a little while, I can usually access another book and have it pull up the correct cover graphic, but when I enter the second book, the same problem resurfaces.
Any thoughts on how to fix or troubleshoot this?

    Update: Solved.
Either creating a new file or saving the old as a template file & renaming it solved my problem.
Here is the discussion where I found that information:

I created a book in iBooks Author using the Photo Book template. When I rotate to portrait orientation, the photo or widget disappears and a table of contents appears with only the interactive media showing.

Thanx for the prompt response, KT. I have indeed seen that thread, only just after I posted the question.
I have spent hours on the phone with what I now know is a call center in Texas on this question.
I think Apple could be a little more "hands on" with iBooks Author users, and it should also be pointed out that landscape photos will not display in portrait mode.
In my case, I used gallery widgets to display vertical photos, since they look better in portrait mode.
But instead of simply rotating, the page disappears and a TOC of interactive media appears. The gallery behaves as expected when tapped. This is not what I expected, but since the gallery works, I can live with it.
Right now I have "tickets" telling me to "fix" this "problem or to disable portrait mode.
I don't want to disable portrait mode.
Will Apple accept the books if I tell them this is not an "error?"

  • Keynote slides with video - not linking in Ibooks Author

    Hi
I have a problem with linking Keynote slides containing videos in Ibooks author. I am using the latest version of both programs on Yosemity (6.5.2 keynote, Ibooks Author 2.2 )
The keynotes is set up with ‘Links Only’ and it works perfectly in Keynote. In Ibooks author the ‘link only’ is not working and the slides just progresses to next one. Like the Presentation type was set to normal, whether or not I press the link or outside the link. The exact same keynote slides without the video doesn’t have this problem and links perfectly in Ibooks Author. The result is the same testing the Ibook directly on the Mac or on the Ipad Air (8.1.2)
To make sure about the video types I tried a number of different ones (different Mac/Ipad video conversion programs) all with the same result. The result is also the same whether it plays ‘on page’ or ‘full-screen’ in the Ibook. The videos all plays perfectly but the links are not working.
Saving the keynote to 09 seemed to solve the problem. I am new to Ibooks author …. And the whole Mac environment. But I am thinking it’s supposed to work without having to do this????
The same happened when I tested a linked keynote example from Lynda.com. ‘Ibooks essential training’.  Only in the 09 version it was working with the links, when the slides had videos. This example was off course also created in an earlier Keynote version.

This is a problem that I've reported both here and via bugreport.apple.com. However, I don't think that it has to do with screen resolution (retina/non-retina). Rather, I think it has to do with setting the widget to "full screen" where transport controls cannot be used and selecting a "Links Only" presentation.
I used simple forward and back arrows set (Control-click on object) to go to next slide or previous slide. What I found was that while this works as designed when played back in Keynote (OS X or iOS) but not in the Keynote widget. The links only  setting and these hyperlinks are totally ignored in the Keynote widget. Tapping anywhere went to the next slide. Tapping on the back arrow also went to the next slide,

  • IBooks Author does not open existing ibook

I updated iBooks Author yesterday and saved an existing ibook on my Mac and USB drive. Today morning, the book is refusing to open, displaying a "invalid format" message. The file also apprears to have shrunk in size, from 250mb to 8kb.
Any idea of what happened and how I can resolve this? Or would I have to re-do the whole thing?

I found the answer here. I guess I just didn't dig long enough!
The short answer is that iBooks Author does not output a format that supports iPhone. Use Pages to generate an ePub file that supports iPhone, etc.
