IBooks Author updating your book?

Hey everyone got a question for you about iBooks Author. Let's say my book is out on the store, but all the sudden I found a HUGE typo or even a page I forgot to add. Can I go back and fix my mistake and push out a "update" which will allow the user to "update" their books just like you can for apps?

If it is a paid/paid book, you'll need another ISBN-13 and another book, edition, whatever.
Everyone keeps saying this, but I completely don't understand it. When my publisher (O'Reilly) publishes my books, they only print a small number at a time, then make any corrections each time they republish. The ebook formats are also updated at the same time. In no case do the ISBNs change. The only time there's a new ISBN is when there is a whole new edition of the book for a new version of the software it's about. (In other words, the reprints/updates for the Photoshop Elements 9 book are still the same number, but the Photoshop Elements 10 book is treated as a new publication with a new ISBN.)

  • What about the "cards" when author updates his book

    Hello Community,
I would like to understand what would happen in this sittuation:
    1) You buy a book online
    2) You insert "cards" with remarks that are important to you
    3) After a few months, the author updates his book in the store
    4) You get a free update from the book
    5) What will happen with your "cards"?
This is of corse the first version of iBooks Author, and some things will be added by Apple in the future (like footnotes, endnotes, pop up text (I guess)), but we have to admit that even this first version really Rocks!
    Thanks Apple

It depends what you mean by customisation.
If you've modified the web.config, IIS settings etc. outside of SharePoint then you'll need to do that on the new WFE as well.
If you've uploaded new solutions/features to sharePoint then it will automatically push them down to your new WFE.
When you set a Content DB as offline then the site collections within it become read-only. As an alternative to your approach you can use PowerShell to create a site collection in a specific content database. See here:

  • Does anyone know how to add a preface page at the beginning of the book in ibooks author once the book is written? No matter how I try to add a Preface page, it goes to the end of the book.

Does anyone know how to add a preface page at the beginning of the book in ibooks author once the book is written? No matter how I try to add a Preface page, it goes to the end of the book.

Thanks. I've tried this and apparently the template I'm using is one of those where it doesn't work. I've tried dragging it as well as cutting a pasting but it always travels back to the end of the book. Maybe I can try changing the template temporarily, move the preface page, and then convert back to the original template. I'll experiment a little.

  • Can't "hide" iBooks author update

I do not want to take the iBooks Author update, so I went to the purchased list and clicked the little x.
iBooks author is no longer on my purchase list, but it is still in the updates list. I right click on it but only get "open" and "copy link."
How do I remove it from the updates list?

iBooks Author is a Mac app/program so you it's in the Mac App Store (so you need a Mac with OS X 10.7.2+), there isn't an iPad version of it

  • Best workflow practices for iBooks Author re Enhanced Books?

    Hi
I have already published one Enhanced iBook in iTunes (The Wandering Gorillas) about my research in Rwanda.  I am now working on several others which will contain much more interactive media - photos and video.
I have vast amounts of unique photos and video - which would be useful for education purposes. So, 'where fools rush in...' I began to creat a new Enhanced iBook with lots of rich media.
However, I immediately started to have serious problems as the fille sizes grew very large - due to the many images and especially because iBooks Author creates versions etc.  Thanks to solutions provided on another post by Pondini & Linc Davis these problems have now been resolved and I have regained my 'lost' 100 GB - which had been gobbled up into the folder DocumentREvisions and private/var - you can read their solutions here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22800295#22800295
Now, I wish to avoid the same problems - and try to get the best possible workflow to use when creating Enhanced iBooks - which contain lots of rich media files such as photos and video.
And so I am asking advice form anyone who has created such iBooks using iBooks author - or who is an expert in the finer workings of this software.
First -  Since Apple restrict the final iBook size to 2 Gb (and recommen smaller) I am considering creating my new iBook via separetly published chapters - so that each will be less than the max 2GB.  Obvioulsy these will have to have some 'stand alone' usefulness!
But, is this a good practice? has anyone done this? Is there any way for the separate chapters to be later combined - by the user - in order to have a complete, coherent book?
Second, re image file sizes.  For best quality on their new Retina Display iPads Apple suggest images of (No larger than ) 5000 x 5000.  I used this - and it produced image file sizes of 20 -30 MB.  I did some other trials - using images of 1024 x 1024 max - and on my iPad 2 (non Retina) my failing eyes could not see any difference?  Their file size was reduced to 2- 300 KB
Would the difference be  obvious on a Retina Display though?  Should we use the largest possible resolution (and file size) - but this has serious implications for the eventual overall iBook file size.
    What is the best compromise?
Third,   I have an iMac with an i7 250 Gb Flash drive and a separate 1TB hard drive.  All my 'media assets' are on the 1TB hard drive. The still images are exported from my various Aperture libraries - as jpegs of the size mentioned above (and into a newly created folder) .  Same with video - to Apple's recommendations for video replay on iPads.
So far I have kept and used the actual iBook Author file - for the new book - on the desktop of my 250GB i7 Flash Drive.
But, as I reported in the other post, this soon caused me huge problems as my disk space was rapidly 'eaten up' by duplicate versions etc.
I am now considering using a separate, 1Tb Firewire External drive for the actual iBook Author file (with backup copies onto another 1TB drive) I am certain this will be slower than using my internal flash drive - but is this 'good practice?'  Can it avoid the problems of all 'lost' storage space which caused me such hassles when using my flash drive?  Or, will this be minimised if I create separate iBooks from separate chapters?
And, delete uneccessary versions of course!
I do feel that this is an emerging issue which many will face - as we incorporate more and more rich media into our iBooks.
Any help or suggestions are gratefull received!

Thunderstorm played havoc with box from my ISP - and I am ruuning on a reserve and internet access flaky!
but, here goes with one reply.  Will have to wait later re tests for your other suggestions when weather calmed down
Re   'as Apple suggessted'   I should have said - no larger than 5000 x 5000 pixels (the 3240 was my vertical proportional dimension from choosing 5000 horizintal dimension)

Add and edit photos and other images
You can add a photo or other image (in a supported file type) to a page in your book by dragging the photo from theMedia Browser, the Finder, or another application.
After adding a photo to your book and positioning it on the page, you can use the tools in iBooks Author to mask (crop) the photo; change its brightness, contrast, and other image qualities; or erase its background.
Important:  When you export your book for distribution outside the iBookstore, images are automatically scaled to a width of 2048 pixels, which is optimized for iPad with Retina display. Readers can view these images on other iPad models, but the viewing experience might be slower. You can improve the viewing experience on iPad models without Retina display by using images no wider than 1024 pixels.
    ShowMask (crop) a photo
ShowChange a photo’s brightness, contrast, and other settings
ShowRemove the background or unwanted elements from a photo
Important:  Images can’t be larger than 25 megapixels (5000 x 5000 pixels) or 50 MB.

  • IBook Author - Publishing a book - Rejection from Apple

    Good morning,
I am trying to publish a book on iBooks using iBook Author. My submission has been rejected 3 times already. Not an easy ride. Sometime the explanation for rejection is quite generic and does not give much details about what is really wrong.
For instance I was told the widget did not work etc...whereas they are working perfectly when I preview my book in iTune Author using the preview function.
So I have removed all the widgets and resubmitted the book without widgets. However Apple says again that the widgets are not working. I am wondering if they have realised that the book no longer contains any widget.
The last ticket says: All books must contain the full and complete text and must not be missing chapters, referenced indices, footnotes, or other content
But again, when I browse through the book on iBook Authors preview, all chapters, section etc...are correct.
I am wondering whether this has to do with a set up in the "iBook Author Inspector fist tab (on the left hand side with the iBook icon). This tab shows "Document and TOC - Table of Content". Is there something I need to do in there ?
    Thanks,
    P0mme

Preview is not reliable.  Instead you should export your book to .ibooks format and transfer that to your device and open it using the ibooks app.

  • Ibook author ate my book can someone help get it back?

I have started writing my ibook in ibook author. All was fine till 3 weeks ago.
Now I can see it as a preview in ibook store says "proof" on it, I can read it.. see it, but I can't reopen it in ibook author to edit and continue to write..
    Pls help
I am a desperate writer who is a first time writer in ibook author ...

Presumanbly the  "Proof" you  see in iBooks - is on either your mac or your iPad.. after you deciided to Preview it.
Unless you physically deleted it... it which case  check the Trash,  - the book is on your computer, if you failed to open a folder to hold your iBooks Author file, which will have .iba suffix  -   MyBook.iba,  then  use the menu option OPEN or OPEN RECENT and look in Documents.
To make it easier to keep track, I create a folder in Documents  " My iBooks 2013"   in that I had a folder using the  title of the current book. later  the screenshots and title page images can be kept there and  when you export your book, its better to have the "myBook.ibook file  in the same place.

  • Updating your book through iTunes Producer?

    Hi,
my apologies if this question has already been addressed elsewhere, but I haven't been able to track down an answer.
I am wondering about how updated versions of books are published. I'm used to app development where I am able to issue updated versions of apps and users can see there is a new version by visiting the Updates page within the App Store app.  I've read a lot of books on my iPad in iBooks, but I've never been aware of an update being installed for any of the books I've bought.
Some of the posts suggest that it is possible to issue an updated version of a book simply by resubmitting through iTunes Producer with an udpated asset.  If this is the case, how are existing owners of the book notified, and how do they get the update?
    Thanks.

Are you talking about paid or free?
iTP, paid, says you can update 'publication' details only.
I've seen no evidence that my paid books update like my apps.

  • Does anybody have any advice about updating your book description once the book is live?

I made a careless spelling mistake while filling out the metadata for my children’s ebook. Obviously I quickly changed it and resubmitted my “package”. That was four days ago and the spelling mistake is still there in the book description for all the world to see. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to push this through? It really should only be a 30 second fix yet has turned into a complete nightmare. Please help. Thanks.

The description is one of the metadata fields that you cannot update yourself. You need to contact Apple and ask them to make the change for you. Quote the title, Apple ID, and ISBN of the book, and added description of the exact change needed, or complete replacement text for the description.
    Michi.

  • Authoreware Book into ibooks author

I am in the process of converting my book which was made in authorware to ibooks author. I need some info to be given to the graphic artist for layout, images and 3d animation work.
    1. What should be the size and resolution for the layout (for cover page, content page)
    2. What should be the format of images and maximum size of the images
    3. What should be the format of 3D animation and 2D animation.
    4. Is there any other information required other than the above mentioned?
From where can I get all the info.
Thanks a lot for your help.

I am using 3D graphics for my book too. I am almost finished and I might as well share some of my discoveries using iBooks Author.
    1. So far I have read that you should make your images larger than the ratio of the ipad. Since the iPad 3 has a retina display (2048x1536) render images at this resolution, since iPad 2 will downsize it anyway. The cover image is 600x800. Since no one can actually zoom in on this image, it doesn't have to be HD like the other pages. (If you see a real ibook, it shows the cover for about 2 seconds and then opens the book).
    2. I have read that JPG is the best image file to use since you can reduce the file size and keep the resolution while PNG you can't.
    3. WIth the 3D widget, I think .OBJ is the file you can use.
    4. All you need is iBooks author, assuming you have updated your mac to 10.7.2. You must have MAC OSX lion, ibooks author and download iTunes Producer (an app to send your book to itunes) iBooks 2 reader app and an ipad with iOS 5.1. Assuming you are going to make an interactibe book, you may need iWorks 09 to make Keynote stuff to add it. You will need an audio editor and a ePub compatible text editor to edit the code (XML) to add read aloud features. (Assuming you don't know what the next steps are, you will need an ISBN number first soon after you finished the book, second you need your tax id to enter into itunes account, bank account, and then you can submit book. I heard it takes from 2 weeks to 2 months to find out if it has been accepted or rejected. It can be rejected by simply having the word "iBooks" in your text, as an example).
Hope this helps, this is an overview of everything you will need to go from ibook author to published ibook. Here is another tip, you won't get much info on the deeper parts of ibooks author. You will have to learn them yourself or talk to someone who has already finished an ibook and get tips from many sources. No one source will have all the info you need, yet. • If I update a book in iBooks will I lose my highlights/notes?

If an author updates a book purchased from iBooks will I lose the highlights or notes I have made in the current version? For example, if I own edition 1.0 of a book and the author provides a free upgrade to edition 1.1 will the highlights or notes I have made in 1.0 disappear?

    No.
You need to mount a vocal campaign on your own to alert them all to go get the new version and delete the old, unless of course they need to keep the old one around, say, for notes and such.

  • How to make hard cover paper book from iBooks author digital book

Someone suggested I make a few hard cover books from my iBooks Author published digital book. How would you go about doing this?
What file should I should I use, (PDF, etc)? What printer would do this best (iPhoto publishing, etc)?
Hoping it will be easy to use the format of iBooks Author so that I won't have to make changes.
    Many thanks for your help.

You can print directly from iBA or you can generate a PDF from the print menu and use that. Be sure to test layouts, orientation, etc. Of course certain content won't be output to a printer.
There are hundreds of printers to choose from - shop your budget.

  • Ibook Author audio (AAC) media widget rejected in validation??

We have a complex image, video and music book from the Arctic created on ibooks author.  Everything seems to validate through itunes producer on delivery except for this error message.
ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets: assets/media/Arctic_master_music.m4p" at Book (MZItmspBookPackage)
We've done everything in widget sizing, placement, audio encoding to aac from QT, itunes and compressor.  We can't get past there error?  Is there a bug in the ibook author or am I missing someting.
Any ideas.  The videos work fine, just the audio clip/
    richard

John, as you can see by my previous response we haven't solved the audio error ITMS-9000, audio outside of widget. But we haven't forced the issue as of late.
We had so much video with audio, that we pulled the page with the music pieces.  Our idea was to see if the book without the error on the audio would pass and it did.  We had to make some other corrections and link fixes, but the video and images all passed.  I was impressed that someone was actually going through page by page.
So once the book is up, we're going to start with the music (audio only) from scratch, strictly following  the process that apple outlines.  We will resubmit it and if it won't pass the error, then I have only one specific issue for myself and apple to deal with.  I have a feeling it's something I'm doing in the music conversion, but we've compressed it from QT, from iTiunes and from compressor following their guidelines all with the same error of this audio placed within their media widget.  Now maybe with their recent ibook author updates things have been fixed.  See I have this little feeling it's a bug in ibook author compiler. But over many years where I jumped out and blamed someone and been wrong, I have to be sure it's me and not them.
So if anyone has had success in audio only book elements placed in ibook author media widget and successfully got it published, tell us your secret.  Please. Or if others are having the same issue, then we need together to find an answer quickly.
Once I find the answer on this issue I'll be sure to post the steps to our success.

  • The new photo app and iBooks Author

I updated to Mac Os-x 10.1.3 and when opening iBook Author, in the media picker under photos the new photo app is missing to pick photos.
Does anyone have a solution? or do I need to be patient for an update.
    Brgds, Jelger

OK some progress to report as a temporary fix.
It looks like when you install the Photo update the relationship between iBooks Author and your photos is broken because the media pane shows no images.  I had the same issue as Jelger.
However, iPhoto is still in your applications folder so I tried opening it (as I prefer the ability to organise photos in the old program).  To my surprise the act of opening iPhoto seemed to restore a link with Author.  So now, when I open Author I get access restored to my iPhoto library and can use my old working method.
Of course, this won't last for ever.  Apple will not support iPhoto any more so someday an update might affect it.  Also, if Apple bring out a fix to link Author and the new Photo this would break the link I have re-established with iPhoto.  I'm also concerned that an update linking Author to Photo will make navigation more difficult.  iPhoto has a natural structure for finding images to  put in books whereas Photo does not.
Anyway, for the time being everything works again.....  I hope this helps.

  • Re-delivering via iBooks Author

Hey guys. Quick question. I uploaded my first book, and was met with only two tickets regarding its content. Easy to fix, but I had to update the metadata (title), cover art, and book assets.
I followed the instructions found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5213?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
but there is a part of those instructions that says "Most of the required fields will be filled in for you, but you will need to include text in the "What's New" field to update your book."
That didn't happen for me. I was met with a completely empty iTunes Producer window (all other info such as pricing, categories were removed).
Rather than fill everything back in, I took the existing .itmsp file from my previous upload, modified the book title, cover art, and assets, and re-delivered.
Was this an OK way to update the book? I'm noticing in the "Manage Your Books" section of iTunes Connect that it does register a 1.1 update (my original was of course 1.0) but none of the other stuff that I changed is reflected in that window yet.
I was wondering if anyone has any insight to this process. Thanks!

    I had a similar problem.
I think  with the new iTunes Producer and  iBook requirements following the recent updates,  the  process is to ignore your previous itmsp upload file and use the Publish option in iBA.
I had to get the Vendor info  from my iTunes Connect account - leave the page open!
Use the  vendor ID to set your process going and carry on as before filling in the blanks. I used copy and paste from iTC for the description etc or presumably you can start again.
You will need to  re- fill every step  and when you get to  the assetts  you are asked if its the same book or a new version. Version No 1.1 is in place IF  you advise a new version.
I had a problem here  - it said it was the same book although I had added new images and  captions  and corrected typ0s and out of line stufff!
An error msg said I needed to include a preview.( mine is a free book  and previews were not required before)  I  opened iBA at the book, duplicated, saved as name-Preview and butchered lumps out to leave a fair variety over 15 pages. Back in the producer I added that preview and moved on to the book cover and screen shots. Everything was OK.
Now in iTC  I have a new orange dot with 1.1 Review Pending.
I assume that all version info is retained by vendor info and if  we do new versions and open it via the metadata options.. all will be in place as before the updates  and asking for version 1.2
I am not saying this is Apples  way - its  what I did to get the book updated and back in the store.
The original or previous version will stay in the store unless and intil a review is passed.
