IBooks categories and subcategories
Maybe I'm blind but I can't see any way to filter the categories down into subcategories. Is that possible? I also cannot see any rhyme or reason to the subcategories Apple puts by default on each categories home screen. For example, Sports has a subcategory section for recent releases and golf on the Sports "home screen" (for lack of a better term). There's no way to change the subcategories that I can see and why in the world would golf be put there as an arbitrary subcategory?
At this point the Kindle bookstore is a million times easier to navigate. I'm not talking content. I don't expect the iBookstore to have a ton of content at this point but trying to find a book is a royal pain. Based on the limited surfing I've done in a few categories I don't see how it has anywhere close to 60,000 books since I quickly get to the end of the books that I'm able to browse through in each category. Makes me think there's something I'm missing.

If you want to get it by product (RepositoryItem), you can do product.getPropertyValue("parentCategories"). It will bring all product parent categories.
ATG uses the same items to describe categories and subcategories, with type "category".
If you want to get by site (RepositoryItem), you can do site.getPropertyValue("defaultCatalog"), and get all categories from the defaultCatalog repository item.

Dynamically create pages from categories and subcategories
We have over a thousand businesses listed for a Chamber of Commerce website we're developing. Each business falls under a top-level category (eg. "Services") and a sub-category (eg. "Plumbers"). I'd like to pull all the categories with their respective subcategories from Site Settings > Categories and use each as a link to a dynamically created page. For instance, click Services, and BC would render a page with all the service provider businesses listed (10 max with links to next page). Similarly, click Plumbers and BC would render a page with the business listing for each plumber.
I understand there is no direct access to the database, but there must be some reasonably direct way to do this. Right now the categories appear in a <select> box as part of a Web Apps Search Form.

How to classify a Document into Category and subcategories
Hi,
We have a fully functional basic KM system where we upload documents into folders and subfolders. Now we have a requirement to classify the documents into categories and subcategories at the time of uploading the document. This classification will be irrespective of the physical location (folder/subfolder) of the document. For example I may have two different documents in the same subfolder, one may be classified as category "General" and subcategory "News", and the other may be classified as category "Technical" and subcategory "Whitepaper".
Also we should be able to filter our document search based on subcategories. When we search a document based on a subcategory, then the search must fetch only those documents which have been marked as belonging to that subcategory while uploading the document. In the search page, the categories must appear as dropdowns and the dropdown values must contain the respective subcategories.
As mentioned earlier, these categories and subcategories are independent of the KM directory structure.
Please let us know how to go about this step by step.

I think you can solve your problem with "Custom Properties"
Using custom properties, u will not only get "Check box", but also "Dropdown"
In your custom property, do the following
Multivalued : Check the check box
Allowed Values (csv) : Give your options

Have PSE 9 and wish to merge duplicated categories, sub-categories and keywords etc?
Have PSE 9 and over the years have found have duplicated categories and subcategories and wish to know the best way to Merge and organise them. Also have a huge list of 'Imported Keywords' and not sure how they are formed and how to mege them with the existing categories, sub-categories etc?
ThanksThe 'imported keywords' category is created when you import picture files which already have been keyworded in PSE (or LR or PS...). When you import you are prompted to keep the keywords. If they don't belong to a category of your present catalog, the keywords will be added there.
Merging categories, sub-categories and keywords:
This is not difficult, but can be time consuming.
- Select a keyword in the 'imported category'
- Right click and select 'edit'
- in the dialog, replace the category or sub-category by the correct one
In that way, you can 'move' a keyword to the correct parent.
If you have duplicates or near duplicates, such as a correct and an incorrect spelling, you have to:
- select all items with the wrong keyword
- assign all selected items the right keyword
- select the now luseless keyword in the keyword panel and delete it. -

A very simple solution for you is to use Google Translate to convert the category titles to French
Another option is to use the iBooks store - search for books made with iBooks Author open a few preview / sample books to look at the information page and check which categories are used the most... and use the same! -
PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME. I'm a computer ignorant woman and need help. I have an IBOOK G4 and I was trying to fix a problem in IPhoto (which never got fixed) and took some guy's bad advice to reset iphoto or something and now my plug-ins are gone too. Or at least the one(s) that were allowing me to listen to on-line discussions and audio recordings.. Can anyone help me? I have gone to UPDATE SOFTWARE and updated Java but that is all. It's like I go to a think were there is an audio thing to listen to and there is a picture of a plug in and it says something like "Plug in not available to listen to this" and then gives you an option to download plug-in but when I do, it says something like "No Plug in was found that was useable" or something alone those lines. Then it has a manual plug-in option but when I clicked that, I entered the frustrated crying zone. Can you help? I will so give you big points! Thank you!

In Alert configuration alert rules are defined based on Alert Categories. So Alert Categories has defined using t code ALRTCATDEF. Container Elements fetches the appropriate dynamic message base on the container variable.

About using categories and perspectives for new user
We are just beginning a conversion and upgrade project to convert our Web site to Oracle Portal. I'm trying to get a good handle on some different things we need to resolve as part of the project. One of the first decisions is using Categories and Perspectives.
I'd like to ask users about how they have used categories and perspectives and some real-world examples of how these work and improve the site and user experience.
About us
We're a big nonprofit river authority and wholesale electric provider in Austin, Texas. Currently, we offer very limited online transaction capabilities. However, we are diverse organization and users come to us looking for every specific information, so these elements may be very helpful. I'm evaluating how we can use these and other elements to make recommendations. Some real-world examples and best practices would help a lot.

Perspectives and categories may be leveraged in custom search portlets, so that you can enter the content one time, in one place, and have selected content display in multiple places.
Re: our "news" concept: our central communications group posts news stories tagged with one or more perspectives, such as which school is related to the story. This allows us to keep all of our news stories in one page group, but reuse the content elsewhere. For example, for the School of Nursing intranet, we can use a custom search portlet that automatically displays only that school's stories.
You'll want to do some up-front planning regarding your classification scheme. One significant limitation of both categories and perspectives is the inability to change the hierarchy. Oracle Portal product team, if you're reading this, this is a serious pain! I might also recommend leaving your classification scheme relatively flat. Tagging content with perspectives becomes more difficult if the content contributor has to visually traverse a deep hierarchy of perspectives.
Categories work similarly, but we mainly use them to visually sort items on a page using the "Group By" feature of a region.
Hope this gets some gears turning.

If your iPhone can't be updated to a higher iOS version then the only way to get them is if you downloaded versions of them which were compatible with iOS 4.2.1 and you still have copies of those versions somewhere e.g. on your computer or on a backup - only the current version of each app is available in the store, and as apps (and other content) are tied to the account that downloads them, you will need to have older copies that are linked to your id

I have an iBook G4 and iTunes is no longer updating. The last update is 9.2.1 but it doesn't support my iPhone or iPad. Is there anything I can do to update iTunes or is my only recourse to update my laptop?
As Niel has suggested Mac OS X 10.5 Lepaord.
But first of all make sure that your iBook is above 800Mhz and you have at least 512 Meg of memory. (1 GB recommended)
Please note, that if you do install Mac OS X 10.5 on your iBook, it will not allow you to install the latest version of iTunes version 11. The most recent version of iTunes that can be installed would be 10.5, which will be compatible with your iPod touch 4th gen, provided it's not been updated to iOS 6.
Sadly you can't install any version of Mac OS X above 10.5 Leopard, as it they requires an Intel processor, which your iBook G4 does not have.

After updating to mavericks I have to constantly enter my apple ID for mail, iBooks, iTunes and many other applications that used to be part of my keychain. How can I get my apple ID log-in to work again?
Several times I've re-entered my passwords under Preferences/Internet Accounts/iCloud and it won't save since I've installed Mavericks. Also, the iCloud icon in the left column in Preferences/Internet Accounts/iCloud is greyed out but allows me to click on it to set-up. When I click on iCloud the password is filled out but the "Enable this account" check-box is not checked. I check it, and all seems correct. The icon is no longer grey, the password is correct, the "activate this account" check-box is checked. Then, when I launch mail, notes etc. I'm still prompted to re-enter my apple ID. The log-in loop continues. For years my keychain has worked perfectly. What has changed in Mavericks?

Completely frustrated by iBooks Author and iBooks
I have been writing in iBooks Author for a while to produce a book. I loved what was shown by Apple as possibilities. My book contains a lot of diagrams, the source material are vector images (SVG or PDF). These images are sometimes large and are unreadable, unless the user can zoom in and pan/scroll around.
Given that iOS is PDF-based and that HTML5 has SVG I assumed (mistakenly) that iBooks and iBooks Author would support resolution-independence vector images. Indeed, it will accept PDF often, but on creation of the .ibook, it produces low resolution bitmaps. There is no decent way to create image viewing that enables a user to look at a diagram that cannot be read on page size of an iPad2. Interactive Image will allow larger images (up to 4096pixels wide in landscape mode), but to let the user zoom you need fake viewpoints that point somewhere and in all, creating something where the user can pan/scroll/zoom is ugly and a pain.
I have been looking at HTML5 widgets to see if one can get around this. But here too, iBooks Author seems not to allow SVG in those (just displays empty, so does iBooks Author kills the SVG on export from .iba to .ibooks?). SO, I hoped the standards of iOS (PDF and HTML5) woul dsolve any problem, but iBooks Author seems to make sure it does not work.
I am so frustrated that I am close to giving up. iBooks Author and Ibooks need (for me):
- handling vector-images (SVG and PDF) (come on, Apple, how can you be so slow with supporting resolution independence, especially given Retina iPads?)
- the ability to let the user pan/scroll over large images that can be zoomed in/out
And I am not talking about stupid things like not being able to replace an image inside a picture element with a new image without losing the picture element and having to manually redo all the links to it.
It has been more than a half year since Apple released iBooks Author. Unless I find a way to let the reader investigate larger diagrams, preferably interactive ones, e.g. created as a HTML5 widget with SVG objects in it, or unless Apple delivers a product with less problems bugs and such, my project needs to move away from iBooks.Thanks, but I am not going to try anything else. I have lost any trust in iBooks Author that I can get this right.
First, it means buying Keynote just for this experiment and besides that means that my images all end up in a widget (I have many inlines now) which will also not be exported properly in PDF.
I am unhappy enough that I have to buy Pages to save my project (if I had known this in advance, I would probably have written the book in TeX and try to find a decent paper publisher) and lose all the nice interaction ideas I had.
If iBooks and iBooks Author still exist a year after I have finished my old fashioned book, maybe. So far, this looks like another beta-never-to-be-kept-alive-in-a-decent-way product attempt at Apple. Stuff gone like iWeb or iDVD (colleague bought his Mac, used iMove to create a Movie and wanted to create a DVD. Turns out he needs to shell out $99 for Roxio to do that. Not a happy camper). -
I want to transfer my photos from the PC (windows explorer) to my Ipad. The problem is that a keep my photos in different categories and they are in one large folder and several subfolders (2 or 3 levels of subfolders).When I sent it to the Ipad, it just respect the first level of folder. After the first subfolder, all the photos are mixed. Any idea how to keep my original organization just transferring from PC to the Ipad (folder having a subfolder also having another subfolder)?

DiogoThe Photos app doesn't currently support subfolders, it only has the one level of folder/album. You will either need to change your folder structure on your computer to be just one level, see if there is a third-party photo app in the store that copes with subfolders, or just make do. I recently purchased a used ibook g4 and i want to update to itunes 10.2. It tells me that I need to update to mac os 10.5. Today is the fist time that I have ever used a mac and I am not very well versed on computers to begin with. From what I gather I need to purchase the mac os 10.5 but there are a lot of different options and I dont know what I need to do. Can somebody point me in the right direction? I dont want to spend too much money because i just want my ipod touch to be compatible with my ibook. thank you

I have created an ibook in ibook author and it appears in ibook on my Mac. How do I get it on my iPad. It is too big to email.
You can install MAMPon you mac (free web server, no configuration needed).
Put ePub file in Applications/MAMP/htdocs and you can download locally (quicker than Dropbox, Mega, etc...)
On your iPad's nevigator type:
http://mac_local-lan_IP:8888/NameOfYourBook.epub
You can see local IP on: System Preferences/Lan or System Preferences/Sharing
iPad and Mac must be in the same lan/wifi network.
