IBooks crashes continually with pdf's

On latest OS and iBooks versions but when I open a pdf it starts to populate the small pages images across the bottom of the screen and then after ~30s crashes.
Things have improved with the current version of iBooks in that at least iBooks opens and displays the bookshelf (previous version would crash immediately).
pdf is ~70GB in size.
If I then open the pdf it displays for ~1sec and then iBooks crashes.
Currently iBooks is useless for these particular pdf's (electronic versions of a subscribed magazine).

I don't fully understand what's involved but I've found that a System Reset cures many ills.  It's easy, quick and harmless:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home  button  simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to  power off" text if it appears.
A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.
Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide.  Pay special attention to page 162.  Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.
http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad
Finally, the User Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks and a less comprehensive version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark.

  • IBooks Crashes due to PDF in iPad's Memory.

I'm running the latest iBooks on the iPad with the latest OS.  iBooks crashes right at startup every time just as the bookshelf loads.  This has happened for the last few versions, and I keep thinking the next version will work.  I have tried re-installing, resetting, deleting books from within iTunes, and just about every other solution I could find in these forums.
When I delete all books and pdfs in the books section in iTunes, delete iBooks, sync, re-install iBooks, then sync again, 7 pdfs keep coming back, once of which seems to be the cause of the crashing.  Is there a way to delete those 7 pdfs which are stuck in the memory on my iPad.  I would love to use iBooks again, and don't want to spend hours wiping and reconfiguring my iPad.

Apple has finally responded on another thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11974122#11974122
They are collecting info on the crashes and the message at the bottom of this page from [email protected] sets out the process for finding the crash report and sending it to him.
Looks as though this took Apple by surprise and at present they don't know what is happening - so, if you are experiencing crashes, check out this other thread and send your crash report to Apple.

  • Ibooks crashes on one pdf but I cannot delete this from the ipad (?)

I am experienceing constant crashes when I switch to PDF's in Ibooks. After very few seconds it just terminates.
This started when I chose to open a pdf sent in email with Ibooks (this has worked before).
Ipad is upgraded to lates iOS w/ patches.
Now I cannot seem to delete the pdf file from the ipad which I suspect is the reson for these crashes.
I have tried to delete it from itunes.
I have tried to de-select it from sync.
I have tried to delete ibooks and reinstall it both directly from iStore to the app and from iTunes.
    Still the same problem.
The pdf file re-appears in iBooks every time.....
It seems that the only option is to delete the pdf from within iBooks.
But this I cannot do while it crashes.
How can I get this pdf file out of the ipad ?
Need help as now the iBooks app is totally useles.
    -Bernt

Yes, that is what I decided on as well.
First I made sure I had a recent backup of the iPad.
Then I went to the iPad's configuration menu and selected to reset and delete all content.
Then I moved the suspected pdf's out of the itune folder, removed them from itune "Books" and is currently in the prosess of restoring the ipad from a previous backup.
I will post here if this "solved" the problem.

  • Safari 5.1.7 crashes continuously with MacOS 10.6.8, Why?

Safari 5.1.7 continuously crashes on my MacBookPro running MacOS 10.6.8
I've tried every suggestion posted in Mac Forums.  Disabled all  Extensions.  Nothing works.
    Same problem others have had.
I have deleted Safari from my MacBookPro (intel late 2007) and exclusively use Chrome and Firefox 21 with
absolutely no problems.   Even IE 8 works when I switch to Windows using BootCamp.
Funny only Apple's browser is the only one that is incompatible with an Apple Computer and Apple Operating System
    with no support from Apple.
So if Apple doesn't care, then I don't care to use Safari when there are so many other better options available.
Apple seems to like to **** off their customers.
I say, fire Tim Cook and bring in Wozniak.
    Frustrated Mac user.
    Thanks for nothing!

I also tried Safari 5.1.8 and it crashed just like 5.1.7.
However, much to my surprise,  I just found a Safari 5.1.9!!!! for Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
When I use 5.1.9 with JAVA NOT ALLOWED,   NO CRASHES and works on all the websites I visit.
With Java allowed though, I just get a white screen with the rainbow ball perpetually spinning.
I had to force quit and then I found the security preference to not allow Java by unchecking it.
The problem has seemed to have disappeared.
So Apple did do something to finally fix this seemingly perpetual problem.
I am a Safari user again.
Thank you Apple!!!!  But why did you have to put us through the wringer to finally get to this point????

  • Ibooks not working with PDFs after update

After loading the updated OS 3.2.1 iBooks would exit to the home screen almost immediately when switching to the PDF bookshelves. I've just downloaded a new version of iBooks and the same thing happens. Within a second of touching the PDF button I'm kicked out of iBooks. Regular books seem okay. Am I alone with this problem, should I expect more updates soon?
    George

Did some testing today. Used iTunes on my Pc to remove all the PDF files on the iPad. Then sent a PDF file as an email attachment. I was able to save and open that file in iBooks. I was then able to add more PDFs from iTunes with the file/add file to library menu choice. after syncing I could open them in iBooks. There doesn't seem to any drag and drop option on the PC version.
My old PDFs had been transfered with Goodreader and using Goodreader to move the files still seems to break iBooks.
It looks like the latest OS and iBook upgrades have somehow broken things with GoodReader....

  • TS1702 iBook crashes opening a PDF file on my iPod touch.

Any solution to the constant cashing if iBooks when trying to open a PDF file.
I just want to save the file to my iPod and I don't care which app I should use.
Trying iBooks and Adobe Reader. AR opens but how to save?
    Thanks.

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Delete iBooks and reinstall
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order

  • InDesign crashes continuously when trying to export into PDF - Urgent Help!

    Hello All,
I'm facing the issue like InDesign is getting crashed continuously when trying to export directly the PDF, I'm using InDesign CS5.5. Please suggest urgently.
    Thanks,

    Sorry, that's terribly unclear.
Is it crashing with BOTH the script and File > Export?
Is your script using exportFile or asynchronousExportFile?
If it crashes manually, have you tried disabling asynchronous exports per Re: Background PDF export Help?

  • Ibooks crashes viewing pdf files

ibooks on ipad air after ios8 crashes when reading pdf files. Parts of pages blank out then whole pages go blank. The app freezes. A restart fixes it until about 20 pages are read then it craps out again. Seems that it is a memory issue. It is very annoying the upgrades to this app with ios8 are a failure!

Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke.  If it has not been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • IBooks will not sync PDF collections with my IPhone. It syncs the collection title but not the content?

My IBooks will not sync PDF content with my IPhone. It syncs the collection title but no content. Both devices are set to sync collections? Any ideas how to fix this?

The 'sync collections' setting does not copy books or PDFs between devices - all it does is if you have the book on both devices and you move it into a collection on one of them, then it will be put into the same collection on the other device.
You will need to sync each PDF that you want on your phone. If you don't currently have them on your computer then connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over (that should copy PDFs and/or epubs that are in the iBooks app, not just actual ibooks), and if using a Mac with Mavericks on it do File > Move Books From iTunes in the iBooks app on it, and you can then sync them to your iPhone.

  • PDF does not "Open in iBooks" or "Open with" any apps from Safari.

    Hi,
After update to iOS 5, I noticed that PDFs in Safari does not "Open in iBooks" or "Open with" any other apps. The option is available, however, nothing happens when I click on it. Has anyone else experienced such an issue?
    Thanks,
    Bibin

I have exactly the same issue.
Here is something even more bizarre.
If I go in Safari to
    arxiv.org/abs/1012.4362
and click on the link to the pdf it displays it in Safari fine, but wont open it in GoodReader (it will upload it to dropbox but then isnt viewable in there).
However, if I go to the same link in Opera, click on the pdf then, as usual, it opens the pdf in Safari. But now the pdf *can* be uploaded to GoodReader from Safari!

  • Acrobat 10 crashes when "create pdf with scanner" command attempted.

    Hello
For many months I have employed Acrobat 10 and an Epson V700 photo scanner successfully on a win 7 64 platform.  I employ the create pdf from scanner command, select the custom scan option and allow the Epson scanning application to launch.  Again this has worked without a problem.
For over a week, however, just as I am about to hand off scanning to the Espson scanning app, Acrobat crashes!!!
I have followed other threads in the Adobe Community with total reinstall of Acrobat 10, bcdedit command line commands, and a repair process through control panel of Acrobat 10.  Nothing has worked.
I now have captured the process crash file with Sysinternals procdump.exe  employing the c:\temp>prodump -e -ma Acrobat.exe c:\temp\01.dmp that I found on a similar Adobe Community thread.  The file is over 154 mb!
Please advise me on how to provide diagnostic data and steps to take to recover this extremely important function of my Acrobat 10!
    Thank you
