IBooks crashing on page 5?
I have several iBooks created for a school curriculum on OSX 10.9.1 (and since updated) Mac Book Air and iMac machines.
About half of the books (6 of the 15) we created are crashing on page three in iBooks on our student devices - all new iPad Air with updates.
We are distributing them through our local network share drive.
Tried: recreating the books with "save as template", deleting previous copies from student devices, reloading books.
Tried: deleting video and interactive image content from iBooks (which makes them really boring) and redistributing them.
I really need some help, you guys. My school spent an enormous amount of money converting the site to Mac/iPad for all staff and students and it was my brilliant idea to convert the in-house curriculum to iBooks instead of handing out stacks upon stacks of paper to our students.
Any suggestions are most welcome.
HELP!
Hi ichoderso,
If you are having issues with iBooks failing to launch you may want to follow the steps in this article to see if you can get it up and running again -
Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199
Specifically this section -
If the issue occurs in one application only
For example, one application does not open or unexpectedly quits. Mac OS X v10.4 and later can help with applications that unexpectedly quit by offering to open the application with default settings. If this doesn't help, skip to "Drag the application to the Trash and reinstall it if the issue persists..." below.
Make sure you are using the latest version of the software. Check with the manufacturer if the product is published by a third party.
If the issue only occurs while using a specific document, try creating a new document or replacing your document with a backup. Your document may be damaged. If possible, try testing with either a new file or a known-good file.
Drag the application to the Trash and reinstall it if the issue persists. Some Apple applications that may have been included with your computer can be reinstalled by using the Install, Restore, or iLife disc that came with the computer.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Best,
Brett L

IBooks Crashes due to PDF in iPad's Memory.
I'm running the latest iBooks on the iPad with the latest OS. iBooks crashes right at startup every time just as the bookshelf loads. This has happened for the last few versions, and I keep thinking the next version will work. I have tried re-installing, resetting, deleting books from within iTunes, and just about every other solution I could find in these forums.
When I delete all books and pdfs in the books section in iTunes, delete iBooks, sync, re-install iBooks, then sync again, 7 pdfs keep coming back, once of which seems to be the cause of the crashing. Is there a way to delete those 7 pdfs which are stuck in the memory on my iPad. I would love to use iBooks again, and don't want to spend hours wiping and reconfiguring my iPad.Apple has finally responded on another thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/11974122#11974122
They are collecting info on the crashes and the message at the bottom of this page from [email protected] sets out the process for finding the crash report and sending it to him.
Looks as though this took Apple by surprise and at present they don't know what is happening - so, if you are experiencing crashes, check out this other thread and send your crash report to Apple.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
My iBook crashes when previewed or after exporting it and sync
Hello,
I designed a photography iBook, and added 2 gallery widgets of 20 pics each. My iBook crashes when previewed on my iPad 3 or after exporting it and syncing it to the iPad. It happens after viewing the book and interacting with it.
I have seen that the gallery widgets behave a bit sloppily when you swipe to the next pic, also the second row of thumbails (pics 11 to 20) don't show properly, some thumbails just don't appear.
What can I do? delete the widgets and start again? Is the iBook crashing because of them? Any user having this problem in the past months?
Thank you!I did it, removed both, started from 0 again. Same problem, thumbails dont show for items 11 to 20. The widget in general works a bit sloppily always, no matter amount of items.
i tried to make images smaller in resolution, same problem.
only solution: never have more than 10 items per gallery, and split 20 photos in 2 different galleries in 2 pages. -
IBooks crashes continually with pdf's
On latest OS and iBooks versions but when I open a pdf it starts to populate the small pages images across the bottom of the screen and then after ~30s crashes.
Things have improved with the current version of iBooks in that at least iBooks opens and displays the bookshelf (previous version would crash immediately).
pdf is ~70GB in size.
If I then open the pdf it displays for ~1sec and then iBooks crashes.
Currently iBooks is useless for these particular pdf's (electronic versions of a subscribed magazine).I don't fully understand what's involved but I've found that a System Reset cures many ills. It's easy, quick and harmless:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.
Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide. Pay special attention to page 162. Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.
http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad
Finally, the User Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks and a less comprehensive version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark. -

IBook crash - no hard drive found while trying to reinstall
My iBook crashed overnight, and after running a hardward test, which seemed fine, I went to reinstall OS X. Sadly, there is no destination volume showing up, as if the harddrive is not there. When I ran the hardware test, the harddrive did seem to show up. Any ideas or help greatly appreciated.

Header or Index facility on iBooks Author and Pages?
I'm an academic who has just published an eBook.
I used iBooks Author to write it, thinking that would be as convenient as Apple equipment normally is....
BUT: Neither iBooks Author nor Pages has
a) Index facility
b) Header facility.....
Finally, to use the Publish facility on iBooks Author one must have a US Tax code.
This limits the use of iBooks Author to USA Residents only.
I'm shocked by this restrictive, exclusive limits from Apple iBooks Author...
PLEASE can this be changed, Apple?!!
Till then, I feel obliged to write my next book with Microsoft Word: though I shouldn't think iBooks will be able to accept a Word index....!!
MarkHi Mark
Apologies for the confusion in not finding the 'masters' - coming from a print background, I tend to use the terminology of the main software I use. iBA calls them 'layouts'.
These can be accessed from top of the sidebar by going to the two horizontal lines next to the word 'Book', and dragging it down. There you will see the layouts for chapter, sections, etc. Looks like this:
These are the pages on which are used as the basis for the pages in the book. They can be changed (by clicking on the appropriate thumbnail on the sidebar), copied, or deleted (by right-clicking, and selecting from the options provided). I strongly recommend taking time to familiarise yourself with how these 'layouts' work, and really understanding them. Getting the template right from the outset is imperative. Take a look at the layouts for section and chapter starters. These already have text boxes which are set up to include Chapter name, section name, etc. 'Text variables', if you like. If you scroll down this list in the sidebar, you'll get to some alternative layouts for individual pages – 1 col, 2 col, 3 col, etc.:
Now - as you rightly point out - iBA has no idea what a facing page is - they are not relevant to what it does - make Apple-only ebooks. but if you wanted an 'illusion' of a facing page, this is where you could make it, by adapting one (or making a copy of one and adapting that), and sticking your name at the top of the page.
The problem is, this layout would not be used by default. You'd have to select every other page, right click on the thumbnail in the side-bar, and choose "Change Page Layout", whereupon you'll be able to select the layout you created for facing pages:
One final caveat - you say you want to create a print book from a PDF of this. You say "Print publishers always accept PDF files of my book, and iBooks easily creates PDF versions of the eBook". Have these printers ever used a PDF from iBA to print from before? It might not be as straight-forward as assumed. Print PDFs include crop marks (for imposition), will have 'bleed' if necessary (bleed is where images or colours actual go over the edge of a page), and will use the CMYK colourspace - used in both litho and digital print. The PDFs from iBA have no crops, and so do not support bleed, and the one I have tested was RGB, so you could expect colour variation conversion from one format to the other. And that's without taking into account page size/proportion, etc.
I would create a dummy book and make a PDF of that, and send it to your publisher/printer, and get them to see if they can use it first.
In my experience, the print books have always come first - done in specialist software (InDesign/Quark, etc), then the text content is then exported (either via a Word format, or .idml in the case of InDesign), and the resulting file is imported into iBA, and the images formatted (i.e. changed from CMYK to RGB .jpgs) resized, and images imported into iBA.
Hope that helps. -

IBooks crashes on launch MBP OSX 10.9.5
iBooks crashes on launch, after replacing my HD in MBP 17" 2009 and ire-nstalling OSX 10.9.5, restoring all my files and apps from Time Machine. I reset permissions. Any suggestions?
Do a backup.
Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.ibooks.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Ibooks crashes on my iMac 100% of the time..
Why does iBooks crash on my iMac 17 intel..
It does not do the same thing on my MacBook Pro ?Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -

why does ibooks crash on ipad air using 8.02?
Hi DizzyTaco2,
If you are having issues with an Apple application such as iBooks freezing or quitting unexpectedly on your iPad, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
iOS: Force an app to close
Next, I would try restarting the iPhone -
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

IBooks crashes after ios8 upgrade
i completed the ios8 upgrade and now IBooks crashes every 5 minutes. How do I fix it or report it?
I'm having the same problem on my iPad Air. iBooks worked fine on iOS 7, but started crashing about 3-5 minutes after launching from the moment I installed iOS8. The crash seems to happens while iBooks is syncing with iCloud and putting my iPad in flight mode prevents it from happening. Disabling the syncing of bookmarks, notes and collections does not prevent the app from crashing. I've tried restoring my iPad using different backups(including one I made just before the upgrade to iOS 8), but the crashes keep happening.
As this only happens on my iPad and not on my iPhone 5, where I have automatic downloads disabled, I tried disabling automatic downloads. This seemed to prevent a crash only once, but once I tried to download a book manually, the crashes started happening again. I also noticed that any book downloaded after installing iOS 8 doesn't seem to be recognised as a purchased book. If I try to delete it, I only get the "Delete" option for books(which usually only appears for books that weren't purchased from the iBooks store), while I still get both the "Delete From All Devices" and the "Delete This Copy" options for any books downloaded from the store before installing iOS 8. On my iPhone, I still get both these options for any books downloaded after installing iOS 8.
The only thing I found is that there is a JetsamEvent log in the diagnostics & usage data screen at the exact time of each iBooks crash. Each of these listed iBooks as being the largest process.
I hope Apple provide a fix soon, it's a bit disappointing to have to read iBooks on my iPhone instead of the larger screen of my iPad. -
Updated iPad2(2011) to iOS8. Now iBooks crashes while reading a book and closes down. I have sync'd the iPad a few times but nothing changes and it will 'crash' every 5-10 minutes. What is going on?
A better solution. This worked for me and several others, from a post from MrsMike921 in the following thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/26725105#26725105
go to your settings, and first go to Safari and delete your history by scrolling down to "clear history and website data". Then go to the advanced settings and select ""website data". It should show 0 bytes. If not, clear again.
next go to iTunes and App Store in settings, and touch your Apple ID, the select sign out.
AFter you you sign out of your ID, restart your iPad by holding down the power button and home key simultaneously until you see the apple logo after the restart.
when you are powered up, go to iBooks. You should get a message that you need to sign in to sync up your books. Sign in, and that should do it. -
Safari crashes or pages load chaotically
This is a question for my Mom who runs Safari 1.3.2 (v312.6) on her iMac which runs Mac OS X 10.3.9.
Internet runs on Comcast cable access.
Safari is really acting squirrely. Crashes often. ALWAYS crashes if YouTube is accessed.
Even if it doesn’t crash, the page formats are often incomplete or “messed up.” Like overlapping text or images. Difficult to use buttons.
Any thoughts?
Thank youHI,
She's running an old version of Safari and an old version of the Mac OS X (10.3.9).
Today's web sites contain content that requires up to date software.
Crashing while using YouTube content on Safari 1.3.2... not surprising.
See if her iMac can be updated to the latest version of the Flash Player Plugin for 10.3 here.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
And try Safari maintenance. http://guides.macrumors.com/SpeedupSafari
Also, check the hard drive for available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is at least 10% available.*

CS4: Super Slow Redraw on Windows 7
Hello all, Photoshop is running very slowly, even with tiny files (50k). I haven't had the need to run large CMYK files as yet, but I am guessing those will drastically slow the already molasses-like redraw. When I say redraw, it's actually the ruler
