IBooks for OS X unable to sync PDF - one fix

Sharing this one for others to use as needed.
iTunes produced a misleading error message and failed to sync a PDF from iBooks.app on my iPhone with iBooks for OS X. I think one problem is that iBooks 1.0 was insisting on using my iCloud Apple ID rather than my Store Apple ID.
I was able to get sync to work, though along the way iTunes deleted the file I was aiming at (sweet - good thing I had a replacement).
Key to working was signing out of the iCloud Apple ID and running move books again, then repeating sync.
More details:  http://tech.kateva.org/2014/03/mavericks-ibooks-apple-id-and-sync.html

It is true that all purchases should share a single Apple ID. It is also true that both iOS and OS X allow only one iCloud account per user. And it is true than every Apple ID has an iCloud account, and every iCloud account an Apple ID [1]. Most unfortunately, it is also true that many (most?) Apple customers have multiple Apple IDs (even if they don't know it - I have 4 [2]).
So far, so simple. Here is the catch. On both iOS and OS X the Apple ID for purchases need not match the Apple ID for account-specific iCloud services. Life is much nicer if they do match, but they don't have to. Part of the bug I ran into was related to a configuration error, probably arising during Mavericks install over Mountain Lion, that gave iBooks my user account's iCloud services Apple ID rather than the iOS/iTunes store Apple ID.
Apple's identity management is a mess of almost unfathomable proportion -- the sort of mess that every smart exec runs from. I'm certain it's gummed up by contracts with rights holders, disparate internal systems, unfortunate choices and a nest of secondary assumptions. It would take a will of iron and a lot of cleverness to solve. I'm curious whether Tim Cook will force the fix.
[1] Curiously, however, an iCloud account does not need to have an email address, and the iCloud account email address need not match the associated Apple ID. This is yet another unfortunate edge case of the Apple ID mess.

Its been a request for way too long...apple experts why is that still a dream.?? If you have MAC you certanly knows what that means when you wish to open a pdf in your mac preview and see in ibooks or even in a Preview App for iOS wich does not exist!!! What a black whole!!!!

  • Unable to sync pdf file

Can some kind soul help me what is the best way to sync pdf file ? Thank you. I have to say that I am really annoyed with my Ipad- there is going to be no more of Apple product for me...I am restricted to do so many things. I wonder why the **** I bought it for..Can't transfer file ising bluetooth, can't use flash site, can't see youtube properly..and now I cannot even read the books that I have in pdf format.

What app are you trying to transfer them to ? If you have the iBooks app on your iPad then you should be able to add the PDFs to your computer's iTunes via File > Add To Library (they should go into the Books part of your library). You can then sync them to the iBooks app by connecting the iPad to your computer and selecting it on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes (if you have iTunes 11 on your computer then you can get the left-hand sidebar to appear via option-command-S on a Mac, Control-S on windows), and then on the right-hand side using the Books tab to select and sync them.
If you are have a different PDF app then how you get the PDFs to it will depend upon what the app supports - different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, transfer via your wifi network, email, dropbox etc.
There is a YouTube app from google which is now also optimised for the iPad, and there is Jasmine, or you could try accessing the mobile version via Safari : http://m.youtube.com
Flash has never been supported on iOS devices - and as Adobe have announced that they are stopping development on all mobile versions of it it probably never will be. Browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter, Puffin and Photon 'work' on some sites, but judging by their reviews not all sites. Also some websites have their own apps in the App Store.

  • Ibooks for mac did not completely sync with my ipad

    Hi
I have recently upgraded to Mavericks. I have been looking forwardto this upgrade especially for iBooks. I was surprised to notice onced i had synced that not all the items in my ibooks on my ipad had been syncronised. Some  collections, such as the PDFs collection, are empty. Anyone have any answers?

I added some pdfs to Mac iBooks and they don't show on the Books tab of the iPad on iTunes.
I already tried several syncs between iTunes and the iPad, and nothing...
This iBooks program is the worst. Seriously... Apple products are becoming more "buggy" than ever.
Well, lets put the pdfs on the dropbox folder and then open them in iOS iBooks. (and wait for the eternal upload time that dropbox takes to upload whatever we drop in)

  • My iBooks won't sync PDF information

I've been dealing with this for a long time, for some reason my iBooks on my iPad won't sync PDF information when I update it in my iTunes (i.e. change/add the authors name). When I look in the books section of my iPad on the dropdown in iTunes, the PDFs for which I've changed information just stay gray with a that "recycle" type symbol to the left, even after the sync is done. I can still open the PDFs in iBooks but it just won't let me change the information as to better organize them. This is incredibly frustrating and any advice would help greatly.

It wouldn't with me either. In fact I lost the pdfs from my iPad after changing their names in iTunes and syncing. Then I found you also have to go to the 'books' tab in iTunes and set 'SyncBooks' to 'All Books', and they all appeared back in the right collection. However, that only worked once. I've renamed some more, and possibly some again, and nothing happens. But at least this time I'm not losing files from my iPad.

  • Ibooks for macdont sync with iOS

    Hi
I make notes and high lights in iBooks for iPhone & iPad and they sync witout any problem, but iBooks
for Mac doesnt sync well with them so what might be the problem ?
    Kindest Regards

    Hi
I just received my iPad2 yesterday. The books that I purchased through iBook on my iPod appear in my iTunes Library. They also appear in the synchronisation window for my iPad. When I synchronised my iPad for the first time, the movies I had selected to add to my iPad did not synchronise but all of my books synchronised. When I synchronised my iPad again, the movies eventually added, but I didn't notice until today that all of my books disappeared. I have tried several times to synchronise my books today, but to no avail. I tried to sync all books and then I tried to sync selected books but nothing worked. I have located the book files and they are all in my iTunes folders. Does anyone have any advice? Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Unable to sync ¨collections¨ from iPad 1st generation to MacBook Pro

Unable to sync pdf collections from iPad 1st generation to MacBook Pro. Have made needed settings in app in iPad and under preferences in App in MacBook Pro. The list of  documents appears but will not open when chosen. Any thoughts?

Are you able to view those photos in full screen mode or in the Edit mode?  Scrolll thru those photos in full screen mode to make sure you can view them in the larger view.  If you get a black window or a black window with an "!" in the center then that's why you can't sync.  Post back with the results.

  • Ibooks for ipod 4g was deleted and new version of it was unable to sync. so please can you help me with that?

On my apple ipod 4g (ios 6.1.6) ibooks was deleted and new version of it was unable to sync on my pod. Can please help me with that?

Try going to the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your iPod and you should be able to redownload an older compatible version of the app from there - you won't be able to do it from your computer's iTunes, you can only download the current version of an app on there, it is only directly on a device that you can potentially redownload an older compatible version.

  • How to get books onto iPad when iBooks for Mac refuses to sync.

I have around 300 books which were originally in the books section of iTunes. Since upgrading to Mavericks the new iBooks for Mac is moved them all over and I ma now unable to access most of them on my iPad despite making sure all settings are correct. None of the books I use for study created by iBooks Author will now transfer. The only ones that seem to are those recently purchased from iTunes. Anybody out there found a solution yet. Apparently Apple admit that only books purchased from iTunes will sync, but I need to be able to get them on my iPad. I don't care if they sync or not.

There are a few categorical places one must visit in order to synchronize iBooks for Mac with IOS iBooks. There is no need to remove the iBook for Mac application.
System Preferences > iCloud > Documents and Data is enabled
IOS Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections (enabled) and optionally Sync Bookmarks (enabled)Assumption that iCloud is enabled on the IOS device with documents and data enabled
iBook for Mac > Preferences > General: Sync: Sync bookmarks, highlights, and collections across devices
    iTunes
Pick your IOS Device under DEVICES in the left nav
Choose Books along the top toolbar
In the Books panel, choose one of the following
    Books and PDF Files
    Books only
    PDF only
    In the Sync Books panel
    All Books
Selected BooksClick the box next to the books you wish to Sync
    Select iTunes Sync
The books (and PDF) you selected above are now on your IOS device

  • ITunes 10 - No longer sync PDFs to iBooks on iPad

Immediately following the upgrade to iTunes 10, I can no longer sync PDF's to my iPad (v3.2.2) for use with iBooks. Is anyone else having the same issue and even more importantly, has anyone resolved this?

Appears that in order to fix this you must delete all of your PDF documents out of iTunes and re-add them to your library.
I attempted rolling back to iTunes v9.2.1 to resolve this and the issue carried on to that version so I'm not sure what the true cause would be. Especially given that the iTunes 10 and iTunes 9 libraries were completely separate (utilized a backup copy of the v9 library for the v9 installation).
Hopefully an official "fix" for this will come out in future versions.

  • How to sync pdf files in iBook on Mac to iBook on iPad/phone?

I used to easily move pdf files I created on my Mac to my iPad by using iTunes to sync them as books.  But now books are separate from iTunes (as they
should be), and iBooks doesn't sync my pdfs to my iPad.  I've done it using Dropbox as an intermediary,  but this involves lots more steps...  Am I missing
something? (Yes, I seem to have the sync content options enabled both on the Mac and the iOS device.)

From iTunes Help Menu this worked for me
Add iBooks and audiobooks to iPod, iPhone, or iPad
You can download iBooks to your computer and use iTunes to sync them to your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. You can also use iTunes to sync audiobooks to your iPod or iOS device.
    Hide
Sync iBooks or audiobooks to your device
Connect your device to your computer and select your device in iTunes.
    Click the Books button.
Do either or both of the following:
Sync iBooks: Select Sync Books, then click “All books,” or click “Selected books” and select the iBooks you want to add.
Sync audiobooks: Select Sync Audiobooks, then click “All audiobooks,” or click “Selected audiobooks” and select the audiobooks you want to add.
    Click Apply.

  • Syncing PDF files into my iPad Mini, but will not show in iBooks

I am trying to sync PDF files into my iPad Mini but it will not appear in the iBooks app on my iPad Mini. I have tried to unselect the book and reselect, sync all or sync selected through iTunes. Still have not figured it out! There is 9.75gb left on my iPad Mini which is more than enough space for the PDF files.
    Please help!

  • How to sync pdf in ibooks

    Hello,
This should be simple, but somehow it doesnt work for me: When copying pdf in ibooks, and organising them into collections, the pdfs are not synced between my different apple devices. The collections are synced, but only the titles, without the pdfs in it!
What am I doing wrong or is there a way to enable pdf syncing in ibooks between different devices?
    Thanks a lot
    Christian

PDF's won't sync, only purchases from the store will do that.
