IBooks Lost all my PDF Documents

I created additional collections  within iBooks and transferred about 20 PDF documents with iTunes into them. This worked perfectly for a few days. Later when I opened iBooks again I saw the list of documents for about half a second and then they just disappeared. The collections are still there but empty. Has this happen to somebody else?

Try this:
# Right click your PDFs, click Properties
# Go to the General tab
# In the '''Opens with''' section, click the ''Change'' button
# Select Adobe Reader (or Foxit Reader/Whatever PDF viewer you use)
# Click Apply then OK.
Does it work then?

  • I have lost all the PDF I had in Ibook

I have lost all the PDF I had in Ibook

Had you done anything with the iPad e.g. updated the iOS version, deleted and reinstalled iBooks ? PDFs (and epubs) in the iBooks app aren't included in a backup (ibooks are redownloadable from the store whilst they remain in the store), have you got copies of them in your computer's iTunes library so that you can sync them back to your iPad ?
When connected to your computer's iTunes the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option on iTunes should copy PDFs and/or epubs that are in the iBooks app over to your computer's iTunes library so that you have a copy of them for restoring/resyncing - had you done that when they were in the app ?

  • All my PDFs/documents disappeared from my iphone 4

All my PDFs/documents disappeared from my iphone 4( version) 6.1.3 after i restored my device, while these PDFs still exist in my itunes books list. I can't as well add new PDFs/documents to my ibooks app. Please help.

A backup includes most items in iBooks, but I believe it does not include PDF files.  Are you saying that in the App tab (in itunes), for iBooks, the PDF files still show up?  Or do you mean something else by "itunes books list"?

    Hi tinam74565130,
That does sound frustrating! It sounds as though the filename associations have become confused on your computer. You should be able to reset that easily. Here are some instructions:

All my pdf documents have suddenly become firefox html docs & will not open unless I go into the folder, right click, 'open with', etc. I haven't changed any of my settings. I think firefox did an update yesterday, however, so I'm connecting it with that, possibly...

  • IBooks on Mavericks lost all my PDFs! Help!

I used to keep all my manuals and tech notes as PDFs in iBooks through iTunes.  All were neatly organized.  Now they're gone!!! Give me back the old iTunes, please!!!

First of all you have to see your Library folder, in your home (Your name)
If you have not done it yet, open your home folder, than select the menu
    View in Finder,
    select
Show view options: it will open a prefs window
At the bottom you will check Show Library Folder, to be able to se the Library and follow the path
and get to the folder of ibooks
    User-home-library-containers-com.apple.BKAgentService-Data-Documents-iBooks-book s
This is a screenshot of my library when it was empty, only one book
I hope yours will be full. But in the case it  is not, you could always add from a backup all your pdfs and books,
    like I did.
In iBooks app you have in the File menu
    Add to library.
In case you see all your books and pdfs there but you don't see them in ibooks
just select them all but the Books.plist, and transfer them in another folder on your desktop.
Then select to import with Add to library , all the books and pdfs you would like reinstated in ibooks
I hope it will work for you as well!
P.s. Don't be disappointed though, your books will loose their names-changed to numbers,
the pdfs still have their correct name

  • I lost all of my document saved in my previous adobe after I upgrade the itunes, how can I get the lost file?

I Lost of my document saved in my previous adobe after upgraded itunes, can I get the lost file again?

Would you provide more information so that we can troubleshoot the problem?
Are you saying that your PDF documents on your iPad/iPhones are lost because you updated Apple iTunes (not Adobe Reader)?  Do you see anything in the Documents or Recents section of the Adobe Reader home screen?

  • I lost all my pdfs files! I haven't sync them but I backed up my ipad. How can i get them back?

    HEllo
AFter updating my ios and then my ibooks app, i found out that all my pdf files were gone!
SInce i didn't synced them, but i backed up my ipad,is there a way to get them back?
    THanks for reading this.

IN my ibooks, I have one book and a lot of pdf files. I don't mind deleting the book as it was free but I'd rather save my pdf files.
I tried both but still, nothing appears.
CAn you tell me how to back up one app? I know how to back up all of them. But in that case, I think you're suggesting me just to back up Ibooks...
ANd does it matter that i haven't sync my Ibooks in itunes? I mean, I have backed up my ipad, is it enough?
ANd is it because of my app update or my ios update? I wouldn't like to do the same mistake in the future...
THanks so much for your quick help!

  • How to find all bookmarked PDF documents in Preview in Mavericks?

    Hi there,
the problem is that before upgrading to Mavericks I could view all my bookmarked PDF documents just via menu bar in Preview, but now in Mavericks I have no idea how to manage this bookmarked documents - I can see bookmarks only after opening these PDF files which have been bookmarked. Just imagine that you have thousands of documents of which only a couple have been bookmarked for later reading - as I can see the only way to find these documents in Maverick is to open documents one by one and see whether they have bookmarks or not... Is there any way to bypass this painful procedure?
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Alex

I tried this and it works as you describe, but not all Hypercard documents appear to have the same content type, as described by Terminal.
The first Hypercard stack I tried came up with the content type:
    dyn.ah62d4rv4ge8xe6u
The search only found the one result with this type (the same stack).
Then I tried using the Hypercard "Home" stack (a pretty central stack to Hypercard's functioning), and it had a content type:
    dyn.ah62d4rv4gk8zgzcbmq
(note the type is longer with a different ending; only the first 14 characters are identical to the first stack).
This search found 317 items, which is likely most of my Hypercard documents, so this is some progress.
Unfortunately I know that since the first stack I tried had a different content type, there may be other Hypercard stacks on my hard drive with yet a different content type, not caught by these searches.
I then tried a wildcard, thinking that if only the first 14 characters of the content type are identical, I focus my search on those characters only, using asterisk as a wildcard at the end. So I searched for:
    dyn.ah62d4rv4g*
The result was 526 hits, including many documents that are not Hypercard. So this doesn't help.
It appears that the content type is not exactly specific to a the File Type or Creator Code, so while I can find many of a particular document, this method cannot find all of one type of document.
I tried searching using raw query by the Terminal-reported File Type Code (kMDItemFSTypeCode= "STAK"), but this revealed no items.
Perhaps I should suggest this to Apple as a bug fix for Leopard, to restore the ability to search by Type Code or Creator Code as a choice in the OS Find service? I know these codes are no longer relied on as much as they used to be, since now the OS uses extension as much as anything else, but there is lots of older software that still run in Leopard that use Type and Creator codes. And Apple still recommends registering the creator code of any new software.
    Thank you!

  • Adobe Reader 9.4 has started to open all my PDF documents continuously

Recently, every time I open Adobe Reader, or click on a PDF document on file to open it, Reader starts opening all PDF documents on file continuously until I get a message saying there are too many open documents to open any more.  The only way out appears to be use of force quit.
Have I picked up some kind of virus, or is there just a setting that I need to change?

Oddly, it sort of sounds like app behavior under Mac OS X Lion.  Lion has a feature called Resume that puts an app that is launched into the state it was in when it last quit.  So, if certain documents were open when it last quit, those documents would "resume" (re-open automatically) the next time the app is launched.
Now, your profile info says you have a PowerPC iMac running Leopard (and you are posting the "iMac (PPC)" forum), so this should not apply.  But maybe you are running Lion on a newer Mac and your profile info is old.  Or maybe Adobe Reader has been updated to have a restore open documents feature.  In that case, if you accidentally selected all in a folder full of many PDF files and opened them all, and then you quit Reader in that state, that "state" may have been saved for the next time you launched Reader. By closing each document manually, and then quitting Reader, you changed the state when last quit to having no open documents.
If this happens again (in any app), these commands may be useful to know:
There is usually a Close command under the File menu (in the Menu Bar).  If you press the Option key, that command changes to Close All.  So if an app unintentionally opens a very large number of windows (and it is not locked up as a result), you can give the Close All command instead of manually closing each window.
In Lion, if you press (and hold) the Shift key while launching an app, the app launches with a "clean slate" (ignoring the state when it last quit).  I don't know if that would have worked in your case, but it would have been worth a try.  Sorry I did not think of it before; I did not see the possible connection to the Resume feature.

  • I seem to have lost all my PDF on my I book I tried the browse and search  no response

How do I get them back? Lost PDF 's on my I book?

Afraid that you won't be able to restore your PDFs unless they were synced on your computer, or there are copies on your computer.

  • Acrobat 8.1 Pro Recent Update Lost PDF Document Icon

Adobe Acrobat 8.1 on Windows Vista. With the update that came on 02/15/2008, after successful install, I no longer have any PDF document icons. All my PDF documents have the Windows generic icon and the files are not recognizeable as PDF documents. All PDF documents function normally. it's just the icons are missing. My .pdf file association is with Adobe Acrobat 8.1. Any way to get back my PDF icons on PDF files?

Same problem here, and, as in your case, it showed up only after the most recent Adobe update--in fact, I started a topic on this before you did. Maybe you didn't see it--nobody else has posted a reply, either.
The 2/18 reply-poster's FAQ link concerns file associations, but that's not the problem here; file associations are still correct. The problem is that what are called LIVE ICONS in Vista no longer work for PDF files. The 'preview handler' underlying functionality still seems to work--that is, if you have the PREVIEW PANE enabled in Windows Explorer you can still see an accurate, detailed thumb of the file. (You access the preview pane under Organize>Layout.)
But the smaller, quick-and-dirtier preview that should show if you have the folder view set to 'large icons' or 'extra large icons', and that should also show in the DETAILS PANE, if you have that enabled, is gone--only a generic Acrobat icon now shows.
In Vista, these live icons are automatically enabled on the desktop, at least if you have the 'aero' graphics turned on. Thus, if you drag a .jpg, .gif, or similar file onto your desktop, you now see a thumbnail instead of the generic icon you saw in previous Windows desktops. Up until last week's update, you also saw .pdf previews on the desktop. But no longer.
I have no better clue than you do about how to get them back. The preview handler designations in the Registry don't show any obvious problem, although the recent Adobe update may have made changes in there that I'm not aware of. (In the CLSID and CLASS keys, for instance.)
My guess would be that there's some changed .dll that didn't get registered properly, or have the right permissions assigned, in the recent update. But this is just a sheer guess. Given all the problems with Acrobat 8 I've seen in these forums, I'm not going to go blindly experimenting on CLSID/Class keys or dlls.
I can't find anything at Microsoft.com or the Microsoft KB about this either--just boilerplate promo for users or developers about how great their live icons are. But for what it's worth, Acrobat is not the only program that has trouble with Live Icons. Microsoft office 2007 live icons are just as screwed up as the PDF ones have become. In fact, they have been screwed up from the beginning!
Once in a great while an Excel 2007 .xlsx file sitting on the desktop will show its preview. But most of the time, just the generic icon shows. I have never managed to see a live icon for a Microsoft Word file. Only .jpgs and .gifs are completely reliable (so far, knock on wood).
    Pretty lame.
By the way, there were also Windows Updates last week ('patch tuesday') and it is slightly possible that they had something to do with this lost functionality. But I don't think so. I can't spend all my time tracking & troubleshooting every update of everything, so I can't state this with 100% certainty, but I am PRETTY sure that the .pdf file live icon problem happened AFTER the last Adobe update and BEFORE the last Windows update.
I wish the Adobe Updater would have a convenient way of showing you which updates were installed when. Vista has this.
