IBooks on a computer

Can I download iBooks onto my computer to read an eBook there.  I don't have an iPad or iPhone.

No. At present books from the iTunes store can only be read with the iBooks app on an iOS device.

  • How can I get PDFs from my iBooks to my computer? They are in iBooks

Hi, I am a new user. I have a couple of questions:
    1) How do I transfer files from my iBooks to my computer. I have articles from web-sites that open up in iBooks and need to know how to transfer them to my computer. I am not very familiar with iTunes other than syncing music, so please provide detailed instructions.
    2) I've got a Kindle app. How do I get them my books from my iPad to my computer.
    Thanks!

There are too many. Any way I can transfer them through iTunes or through an usb?

  • If I don't have an older version of Ibooks on my computer, can I use my friends older iBook version on my iPad to restore the old book shelf? Will it work?

I don't have an older version of Ibooks on my computer, can I use my friends, to restore the old book shelf version on my iPad? Will that work?

It won't change the version you now have.

  • Copying iBooks for iMac computer lab

We want to share free Common Sense Media iBooks to all users in a K-12 computer lab (21 iMacs running Mavericks) without the need to download them for each student from the iBooks Store.  I was able to copy the iBooks folder (xxxxx.ibooks) to a student computer, but was not able to open it through iBooks.   Is it possible to store iBooks on the computer hard drives so the students have access to them?

No, the books are tied to the Apple ID.
They have to download them from iTunes.

  • Installed Tiger on blank hard drive iBook G4, then computer froze.

I'm pretty new to Macs. I bought a used iBook G4 with no OS installed. I installed OS X Tiger from a CD and everything went fine, but when it restarted after install, after the Apple logo, the screen went black. There's a white light flashing very slowly on the front of the computer, and the computer won't respond to the power button. It just keeps flashing.
Possibly relevant information is the computer didn't come with a charger cord, and I haven't bought one yet. The battery was at about 50% when I started the install and down to about 30% just before it completed.
Also possible relevant information is that my cat jumped on the keyboard during the install. It said 45 minutes remaining when she did, but right after she did it said installation completed successfully and rebooted. Is there some key she could have pressed to make the installer skip something important?
Or is it something that should be fine when I get a charger?
    Or am I screwed?

    Hello,
You summed it up well when you said, is it something that should be fine when I get a charger.
Indeed it should. That light indicates the iBook has gone to sleep or hibernation. If it can't be woken then it likely to be the battery has become flat bellow 6% charge.
It may have shown 30% just before completing, but you have to remember the batteries age. They can drain really quickly.
Once you obtain a replacement charger, all should be well.
    Best of luck

  • Do we need security programs on an iBook or home computer?

I have iBook. Hardly ever connect in stores/Starbucks online. Can I get hacked? Infected? Breached? and if so, do we apple owners need a program to protect us?

    PS:
You do not need to buy a license to try or use iCab.
The maker could tell you if an update to a licensed
version were available for obsolete Panther 10.3.9
otherwise the versions in the downloads page work.
One of my older Macs has an iCab version, however
when visiting some sites, it says the browser is out-
of-date; even though I can use settings inside iCab
to have it appear to be a different browser identity.
If a paid-for license adds newer browser identities,
I don't know. -- This would be question for the maker.
See this version for PPC + OS X 10.3.9:
    iCab 4.9 (08.06.2012)

To find a retail Tiger 10.4 install DVD may be a difficult search
as could the effort to locate a retail Leopard 10.5 install DVD.
If you are in the US, you could try Apple sales support 800#
from their main web site, and ask for an operating systems
specialist; be ready with your computer serial number & model
name, and processor info. You could ask if they could help
you find a replacement copy of the Tiger 10.4 install disc set
for your computer; and in addition, if the model could support
Leopard 10.5, you should inquire about ordering that as well.
Both may or may not be available. These would not be retail
labeled nor would they be original gray-label discs; there is a
chance the Apple sales support may be able to have copies
of these discs made from another archive, on to disc media.
If so, there may be a fee per disc; you could order by phone
should that opportunity be the case. Other updates to these
    systems should still be available online via Software Update;
since the base level OS X 10.4 would need Combo update to
take it to last step 10.4.11; same with base 10.5, to 10.5.8.
If the planets align and someone you talk to at Apple support
says they find you can order a replacement copy of these OS
X versions otherwise almost impossible to find -- get both.
Hopefully someone at the sales support can direct you to an
OS X systems specialist who can arrange to sell you either
or both of these as replacements, so you can do a full install
of either or both (depending on your computer hardware) and
to allow you to access the internet with later browser, etc. This
is not a certainty, but if available (some don't know, apparently)
you should be able to pay a reasonable fee to obtain these.
So a form of payment such as a CC should be available, in case.
    Good luck in this matter!

  • Need to sync iBooks on different computer than where everything else syncs

I been syncing my iPad at a home computer and using mobile me to keep calendar, contacts etc. in sync. Everything is working perfectly.
Now in my job, I am starting to create ePubs for iBooks, and would like to sync these files with my iPad from a work computer via iTunes. I have been emailing the ePub files home, then syncing.
I sure would like to be able to just sync the iBook part at work (using the same iTune account), so that I would have immediate access to the files that I am working on. I am loosing so much production time not being able to have immediate access to the ePub and making revisions.
Is anyone else doing this? Can I attempt it and now screw everything else up?
    Thanks!

  • Why Can I not read my iBooks on my computer?

I've joined this simply to ask this quesiton and i am beyond annoyed at the fact that i cannot read any of my ibooks on anything but my iPod which i've dropped and smashed. I wish to continue to read them on the computer and cannot.

It is possible to read some ebooks without an iOS device -- those in the epub format which do not have DRM.  Usually free books are like that, and some publishers of paid books (like O'Reilly) also omit DRM.  Apps like Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre can be used for ebooks in this category.

  • Will the iBook suit my computing needs?

It's not so much that my iMac is getting old, but I'm really starting to crave portability. The 14" iBook looks tempting, but I'm not sure it's right for me. I'd love to have your opinions on a few concerns:
    1. The Macworld review mentions that the 14" screen looks fuzzy, because it's the same number of pixels as the 12", just filling a bigger space. Have any of you found that to be true?
    2. I'm an idiot when it comes to screen resolution. If I buy an LCD monitor to use with the iBook, am I going to have problems because of the comparatively low resolution of the iBook? Will everything look sharp and crisp on, say, a 19" monitor?
    3. I use my iMac for mail, surfing, iTunes, iPhoto, Photoshop Elements, playing DVDs, and plan to get into iMovie and iDVD. Will I be OK with an iBook, or should I think about a Powerbook? Is the iBook going to feel slow or limited compared to my iMac? I'd definitely bump the RAM up to the full 1.5 GB on the iBook.
    Many thanks,
    Lynne

I just got the 14" iBook - i wanted the superdrive, and i don't have any problems with the text - it doesn't seem fuzzy at all to me. could be because my old gateway laptop also had the same size screen about and same resolution so it didn't bother me then either. i thought the 12" just looked too small for me even if they do both have the same resolution. i haven't hooked up the 19" monitor i have for my pc desktop *poor computer just is sitting there now since i got my iBook - i feel so bad esp since it's a custom built by me* and i run tons of stuff all the time on my iBook like i do on my desktop - i love multi-tasking and running 5-milllion things at once and the 512mb ram the iBook comes with doesn't slow down at all - though i'll be bumping up to either 1 or 1.5gb anyways good luck

  • Is it possible to read books downloaded for Ibook on my computer?

I am curious, is it possible to read books dowloaded via ITunes for IBooks in my MacBook Pro?
    Danny

Yes there is. Not by Apple yet but I have read the downloaded books (into iTunes library) using "caliber".
"calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books."
If necessary, you can also convert to another format (eg MOBI) so you can read on your Kindle or whatever...
    Cheers!
pd: Read notes on appropiate version for you... you can download at http://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx

  • How do I read an iBook on my computer? Adobe Digital doesn't cut it

Clicking on the iBook in iTunes doesn't work. If I use Spotlight, I can see the .epub version of it. Clicking on that in the Finder opens Adobe Digital Editions with blank text screen.
Can see the ToC in sidebar. That's it.
This is way too many procedures to read a book.

Books purchased via the iTunes bookstore are encumbered with Apple's DRM.
Apple don't make a reader application for DRM'd .epub books that runs on a Mac (or a PC either).
They are meant to be read on an iOS device, as should be clear from the terms and conditions.

  • HT4059 Can I make an ibook a pdf so I can look at it on my computer??

please help I got a laptop for christmas for school and want to use the my textbooks I have on ibooks on my computer is there anyway??

You can't convert an ibook into a PDF. Some publishers (e.g. O'Reilly) aren't using digital rights management on their ibooks, so you may be able to open them in other programs e.g Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com) and I believe Adobe Digial Editions may be able to open non-DRM ibooks. But those that have DRM you will only be able to open in the iBooks app on an iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

  • HT4059 how do I trasnfer my ibooks from my iphone to my itunes on the computer

Does anyone know how I can transfer my books from ibooks to my computer's itunes library?

If they are ibooks from Apple then you should be able to re-download them on the iPad via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app. Or you can copy them from your iPhone to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11) and then sync them to the iPad (they should copy over to the Books part of your computer's iTunes library)

  • HT4539 Can I read books on my computer with iBooks? or only on a device?

My reaction to the latest scramble ("update") of iTunes is "GGGRRRRR." How would you like it if someone you barely know went into your house and rearranged all your furniture without telling you. And expected thanks.
Now there is an iBooks button. What is that? Well, I can't find out. Apparently the information should have been downloaded directly to my brain. In otherwords, apparently I am just supposed to KNOW. Like f2 is delete.
Well I missed that download and I've been trying to find my way around the new iTunes and figure out how to manage my playlists, which are primarily Audiobooks. It seems no one thought of that when they redesigned my world without telling me. OK. I DON'T HAVE AN IPAD. So shoot me, but don't assume I have one. I do have a powerful little MacBook that I carry with me always. So:
Can I read ebooks with iBook on the laptop, or is it exclusively for iPad, iPhone, or iTouch? If it WON'T WORK ON A COMPUTER, JUST SAY SO!!

You can't read ibooks on a computer (Mac or PC), only on an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch via the iBooks app.
You can get the left-hand sidebar that used to be on previous versions of iTunes to show via View > Show Sidebar (option-command-S), that might make the new version easier to navigate (it does for me anyway)
