IBooks outside of US

The disclaimer says that iBooks is available only in the U.S. Does anyone know what this exactly means? Does this mean that iBooks is available for download in the U.S. (but you can still read the books you buy if you flew to, let's say, Europe) or does it means that books will stop working if you leave the US (which seems ridiculous).
In addition, can someone explain to me why this is the case? Is it a legal issue (which is weird since I can have Amazon ship books to pretty much anywhere in the world) or is it a marketing issue (where Apple kinda once to test things out locally).
As someone who travels, I'm excited by using an iPad for travel, but that depends largely on whether it can be accessed worldwide.

You can read your books while traveling outside the US.

Apple needs to make arrangements with all the different publishing houses to sell books. In the US, one publishing house may sell a book while it could be a completely different publishing house in the UK.

  • Can I develop an iOS app that can download multiple free iBooks that I publish and make them available within the iBooks app?

Is it possible for a self-developed iOS app to download iBooks from our server and make the books available to the iBooks app?
My organization is evaluating publishing some free training manuals / textbooks as iBooks made with Apple's "iBooks Author" software. We don't necessarily want to use the iTunes Store for distribution because of the semi-sensitive nature of the content. To distribute the books to users with iPads, we've thought of using MDM software, a webpage, or an iOS app. The reasoning behind an iOS app is that the app would be a "download manager", making it much easier for a user to download all 42 books all at once. A user would install our "free training manual download manager" iOS app and use it to authenticate to a our server app that would serve the books, the end result being the books available via the iBooks app.
    Thanks,
    Ted

    Hi Kappy,
Actually Apple lets self-publishers distribute iBooks outside of the iTunes Store, as long as the iBooks are free (no cost to user).
What I'm wondering is if it's possible for a custom iOS app to side-load iBooks so that they're available to a user within the iBooks app.
If not, we'll either post the iBooks for download from our website or we'll use MDM software to push the iBooks to MDM-enrolled iPads.

  • I Can't download iBooks

Why can't you get iBooks outside of the US???
I bought an iPad while traveling in the US, but after returning to Australia I can't download anything, I can't even get access to the app store???
What's the point of getting an iPad if you can't use the app store???
Does anyone know when other countries can get access to the app store???

they announced this during the iPad announcement in January... Since the iPad has not released for Australia, then iBooks is not available... it will be available on May 28... the point is that it was released in the US only so far and therefore supported in the US only so far... just wait... support will come...

  • Network identification

while installing a bluetooth d-link I somehow wound up with "linksys" as the chosen network for my Airport Express. How do I get back my old "Apple Network...whatever the numbers and letters were...." so Itunes will beam to remote speaker? Thanks.

    Hi Hank
You didn't contribute to the intrusion, it was just there waiting for you to pick it.
We have a wireless setup in the house here as I don't want to run cables up the stairs to the girls' bedrooms. Both upstair macs see only the home network- but if I take the ibook outside the front door I get 2 more on the list (Using istumbler).
Yesterday I put an airport card in this old iMac - which is currently in the back of the house. This afternoon it had connected itself to a network called Netgear (don't ask me how as my network is an Apple one with a suitable apple name), it was also seeing 2 other networks - one of which I had not seen before on the ibook (I hadn't seen Netgear before either).
A couple of weeks back I walked up the street with the ibook and istumbler - there were 20 or so networks transmitting - and about a third were open networks.

Nothing in any information Apple has released indicates that there's a camera of any sort in the iPad.

Unknown at this time, but I think it doubtful. The iPad uses what is essentially a modified version of the iPhone OS and that doesn't support multiple users. And no, that's not the "point" as such; the iPad, like the iPods and iPhones, is considered by Apple to be a personal device. But we'll see.

  • Delivering our iBook from outside U.S. - our story

    Hello Everyone,
Last year when starting our iBook project I was hungry for as much reliable information as possible. This community was very helpful and I hope to be able to help anyone interested in creating and delivering their iBook. So I hope to provide recommendations for people to help them.
My wife wrote a huge book on caring for Eclectus Parrots and I desinged the book using iBooks Author. We live outside the U.S. (Australia) and so we looked at several of the publishing houses to deliver our book for us. The 'process' of setting up tax ID's and handling all of that seemed daunting at the time - but it is not. I highly recommend that if you speak english well and can devote a day of phone calls, and about $100 you will do just fine and you will be 30% richer in the long run.
Setting up an iTunes Connect account is easy. Getting an EIN from the U.S. is also reletivly easy. For some reason we had trouble last year contacting the tax office, but once we got through they were very helpful and within about 30 minutes we had our EIN. Next, you need your ISBN which are easy to get and once you pay the fee with Thorpe-Bowker you get your ISBN immediately. As long as your local tax info is correct, finishing the iTunes Connect tax and banking account is simple.
When designing your iBook in IBA, make sure to follow the guidlines Apple provides. Be sure to have your copyright page in order (the page where you have your ISBN and your "all rights reserved" disclaimer).
Once you are ready to deliver, uploading your book with iTunes Producer was sketchy. I had to upload it a couple of times (800+mb). I have not yet used the new version of iTunes Producer so that may be better. We are selling our book, so it took about 3 days to show up in the iBookstore, but it did and it is incredibly exciting to see your hard work in the store.
If you are in the process of designing your book I highly recoomend you start planning your promotion process. Once it hits the iBookstore you will want people to know about it. It helps to have a small website setup. Start spreading the word through any relatable means possible.
Overall, the process seemed daunting to start with, but it really isn't as hard as it seems. It is so rewarding to see your efforts come to fruition and even more - to see such a positive response from people. I hope this helps in any way.

If readers see this... its not typical!   There  are many threds in the iBooks Author discussion group. Follow the information and use the phone number given......
    1-267-941-1099   USA IRS Telephone
    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pdf
Calculat your time zone to call the  tax office around their 6.30pm.  The finish work at 7pm and most US people are home for dinner and not talking to tax officers.   It took me 10 minuutes and I am in Australia and purchased a $10 phone card and the  call cost be about $3.
UK applicants will also need an IBAN number from their  bank.

It is now not an Apple iBooks store requirement  - IF you  intend use  publishers other than Apples iBooks store, then you will need to comply with whatever that publisher/online book store requires.
Once you are ready to deliver, uploading your book with iTunes Producer was sketchy.
Sorry,  the  deliver process is easy and strait forward. prepare your  cover and  screen shots as they are requires in advance and  follow the   steps when iTunesProducer is opened by the "Publish" option in iBA.
If you have problems... its OK to stop the process.. clarify your issue and then   go back to start again.

Clearence and  arrival in the iBooks store  depends on how busy the review team are and can  take 1- 14 days  or longerdepending on how busy they are.
Overall, the process seemed daunting to start with, but it really isn't as hard as it seems.
This is true,  most people  do not take time to  gather the information and follow the correct  procedure.
Download teh assett guides   available from your iTunesConnect > Deliver your Content.
And also read the Help files in iBA.
As the poster and myself  illustrate...  everybody may have different results, the  best start is gathering all teh information  in the  various threads in the rerlated discussion groups and only post requests  for  advice if you get stuck...
Hope your books are a huge success....

  • Has anyone been able to upload an ibooks file with audio only files (m4a) in it? I keep getting the following error message during the upload in iTunes Producer: ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets.

Has anyone been able to upload an ibooks file with audio only files (m4a) in it? I keep getting the following error message during the upload in iTunes Producer: ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets. then it names the file as an m4p file. Everything works beautifully on the iPad through Preview, and validates through iTunes Producer up until the attempted upload. If you've been able to accomplish this, please let me know how you prepared your audio files. Many thanks.

    Hello Fellow iBook Authors!
Today I received the same error that you all have been discussing.  I tried selecting the DRM
and this did not work for me, though I'm glad it did for some.  Here's what I did as a work-around. . .
Since iBooks Author did not have a problem with Videos, I simply used one of my video programs, ScreenFlow to turn the audio into a video file m4v.  I added an image and extended the length or timing of the image to span the length of the audio file.  Then exported as an .mov.  I then opened QuickTime and opened the file and exported the file to iTunes.
You can use iMovie, Camtasia or any other progam that will allow you to export the audio as a movie file.  Does this make sense?  I hope this helps, at least in the short-term.

  • Outside PDF transfer from iBook to nook

I recently bought a travel guidebook online from an outside source other than iTunes. However, when asked what program I wanted to use to open it I chose iBook. Since the book I downloaded was in PDF format I can not highlight portions of it using iBook. I am wondering if there is anyway to transfer it to nook so that I can highlight passages. Also the device I am using is an iPad if that changes anything. Thanks for any help.

  • How to screen share a Tiger iBook from a Leopard iMac outside my home LAN

Okay, I have recently installed Tiger on my girlfriends G3 iBook, and I am able to control it from my iMac via Screensharing, but so far I have only tried this while they are both on my home network, (the iBook is using an ethernet connection from my iMac which itself is connected to the internet via Airport)
What I am hoping someone can do for me is to give me step by step guide on how I would control the iBook when it is connected to the internet outside my home LAN.
I have seen a tutorial for Chicken Of The VNC, but I am still in the dark as to whether I need to install this on my Leopard iMac, or on the Tiger iBook. I am also concerned about the security risks inherent in doing this, so I would like to learn how make a secure connection from the outside world.
I am completely clueless when it comes to port forwarding, or anything to do with ports for that matter,
I would be massively grateful if someone could talk me through this.

The easy way is to use something like LogMeIn.com, YuuGuu.com, CoPilot.com, Timbuktu, TeamViewer.com. Some of these are free for non-commercial use.
They figure out how to deal with home routers, and provide encrypted connections. The down side is that they are not always fast.
Using a secure VNC connection tends to involve either setting up a VPN server on the remote system, or using ssh tunnels. I'm an ssh tunnel person myself, but it has lots of steps.
    a) Enable Sharing -> Remote Login on the remote system (enables ssh logins).
a.1) give the remote system a secure password.
    b) enable the VNC server on the remote system (Sharing -> Apple Remote Desktop)
b.1) Via Apple Remote Desktop configuration, give VNC access a password.
b.2) Optionally use a different VNC server, for example Vine Server.
    c) Configure the remote system's home router to "Forward Port 22" from the internet to the target system.
    d) Using something like whatismyip.com get the internet visible IP address of the remote system.
d.1) optionally get a free dyndns.org or no-ip.com dynamic domain name and run a dynamic DNS update client on the remote system.
    e) On your system, start an ssh connection to the remote system
    ssh -l user -L 5900:127.0.0.1:5900 remote.sys.ip.addr
    Password: ........
    f) Use your VNC client to connect to the ssh tunnel using
    127.0.0.1:5900
    as the ssh tunnel address.
    g) Enter the remote system's VNC password (separate from the ssh username password).
I have left out a lot of details. But knowing the steps, you can most likely do google lookups to get the details you need.

  • I modified photos outside of ibook author, does it automatically update it

    Hi
Is there a way to update photos that have been modified, say in Photoshop. As I am doing it now, I have to delete photo and re-add it; not an efficient process.
    Thanks

I address this mainly to those who may view who have similar questions.
While its always good to send in feedback,  fact is the last update showed that in the main,  feedback ideas, suggestions and request have been - as yet - ignored.
The software is provided free and was created to suit Apples requirements for ebooks made for the iBooks store.
It should be remember Apple recommend  that the all content of a book  should be prepared OUTSIDE iBooks Author and when  editted to its final version, imported into iBA and tuned in as needed.
Text can be created in MS Word or iPages or any simple text editor and  imported into your book for a final edit.
iBA does have  an image editor = View > Adjust Image - which  will make basic corrections to images.
You can also "crop" using the Mask function.
Apple IMHO, are never going to  integrate an image editor anything near as good as Photoshop or any of its lesser functioned alternatives.
BellaGolfer: In your case, you  had the images prior to importing into your book, logically you still have that version. If at a later stage you have  changed the images, all that is needed is to drag and drop into the same imageholder in your book and  it/they replace your old version(s).
Ofcourse if you  want to change images or text  after your book is in the iBooks store... it will need a book update to be delivered.
Its better you use whatever image editor you are familiar with to adjust your images - and if needed, use the iBA Adjust Image to tweak if needed.
A very useful video showing  the functions etc,. of iBA can  viewed  and there is full iBA User Guide and other  must have  guides  which can be downloaded  from your   iTunes Connect > Deliver your Books page
To any newcomer wondering how to set up accounts - the user guide above takes you from that to delivering your  finished book.

  • How do I privately distribute an ibooks file outside of email?

I export my ibook in .ibooks format.  My ibook will be too big to distribute via email.  So I try uploading to my webserver, and when I try linking it:  http://www.domain.com/thebook.ibooks ...the browser shows as a 404 broken link page.  Then, i try ITMS-books://www.domain.com/thebook.ibooks.  I click on the link from my ipad.  iBooks opens but unable to connect to the content.
To avoid a discussion about selling my book outside of the iBookstore, my iBook is FREE and I want to distribute it privately.
    Please help.

How do you upzip a file from an iPad?
That depends on the OS in use. Snow Leopard and Lion using Safari will automatically download and unzip the file. Older Mac users may have to use the context menu to manually download and unzip the software. As K T already indicated, zipping the file prevents potential Mac problems. Since the .ibooks file is basically a zipped folder, newer operating systems will automatically unzip the .ibooks file and turn it into a "folder" while older systems may treat the file as a "text" file. As to PC patforms, I couldn't say not being a Windows user.
Actually, I tried the zip and it surprisingly unzipped it from within Safari and it showed "Open with iBooks" link...  but when I click on the link it opens iBooks but then says "Do you want to leave iBooks and open this link?"  and nothing happens.
I normall recommend managing all eBook content (ePUB, iBooks, PDF) using iTunes as the point of entry, primary storage, and for syncing to all other devices rather than going directly to a mobile device.

  • Can one publish iBook textbooks outside the U.S.?

Can one publish iBook textbooks outside the U.S.?

There is currently only a "Textbooks" category in the iBookstore in the US.
You CAN sell your .ibooks file in other countries by uploading it to alternate categories.

Are iBook textboks that are published in the U.S. accessible outside the U.S.?  Say, in the E.U.?

Same question here. I own a private school in Japan and would love to get textbooks here. All of my students are given iPads when they enroll in my school, but so far we use them for learning apps. Textbooks would be a great addition to my curriculum..

  • Help....need protection for outside of iBook....suggestions

hello. i just received my iBook like 4 days and i was wondering if any of you have like a protective cover on the outside of your iBook...not a bag, but something where it just protects the outside and i'll still be able to type. if you have one or have seen one, do they have ones w/ the apple cutout? thanks

Brasso is a mild abrasive polish intended for metal, I've used it repeatedly on my iPod screen and once on an iBook case. Any other very mild abrasive should work too. I've used Scratch X auto polish before too. Test in an inconspicuous area first of course. I hear iKlear is okay but so mild it doesn't do much unless you polish for hours on end.
Personally I wouldn't bother, I've used many iBooks since they were first introduced and when my first white one (dual usb) started to scratch a bit I fretted, and even covered it with clear contact paper (I actually used a checkerboard clear pattern that looked pretty cool, but hard to stick on without bubbles, peeled off easy too, you can try that).
These things are made to use, trying to keep it in a prestine condition will only make you nervous. Use it! That original dual usb is now my wife's and it shows it's a age a bit (you can see the little hairline scratches if you try hard) but despite being dragged around for years and years (and rebuilt), it actually still looks good.

  • Can I use iBooks Author as a word processor and sell the text outside of iBooks?  Or does the exclusive license apply even to the text?

I don't know if I want to sell on the iBook store, and I'd rather use iBooks Author than Text Edit or Word or Pages.  I understand that complicated interactive content is what makes iBooks Author special.  But if I create basic text content I could create anywhere, taking advantage of the versioning and iCloud storage iBooks Author provides, do I still own my own writing?

You own your own writing but the license would prevent you from selling it externally if it produced using iBA. You could of course freely give it away, or sell it via the iBookstore. If I were you I'd be using Pages - much friendlier to use (less bugs, more mature) and if you need the extra features you can import into iBA.
