IBooks search question

My question regards search results in iBooks. This is for 2 books in pdf format.
In the first book, when I search for a particular number, the search results show 1) page number results and 2) text results containing the number. Shown below.
In the second book, when I search for a particular number, the search results 1) page number results and 2) text results containing the number PLUS a word next to it ("audrey-small"). Shown below.
Has anyone else experienced this with reading pdfs in iBooks? I don't know if iBooks is the best application for reading pdfs on the iPad, but that's what my client uses. Both books were created in Adobe InDesign. I'm posting this also to the Adobe Forums, but any insight here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I realized I didn't ask my question properly. Here it is:
Is there any way (either in iBooks or InDesign or Acrobat) I can tweak data so that search results for numbers come up ONLY with numbers (such as "72" in the 2nd example) instead of numbers and words (such as "72" and "audrey-small" in the 2nd example).
Thank you!

  • PDF in iBooks, search question

Hi there, I have a client who uses iBooks to view 2 pdfs on her iPad. The pdfs were created in InDesign, 2 different designers (not me). The issue she encountered is with search results in iBooks.
Is there any way the word "audrey-small" can be taken out so that search results for numbers only show the number? I'm posing this as an InDesign question because the 2 files were built by 2 separate designers and they may have different creation/design processes.
I don't know if iBooks is the best application for reading pdfs on the iPad, but that's what my client uses. Both books were created in Adobe InDesign. I'm posting this also to the Adobe Forums, but any insight here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

In the first case, that might be the expected behavior. It seems in iBooks, pdfs don't have the option to go to a certain page # only as you have it with Adobe Reader. It just puts the number in the general search and brings all results containing that number. Regarding the second case, I have no idea why is showing audrey-small.

  • Has anyone else noticed that iBooks search does not find all information that should be located for a specific search criteria?

I am converting a novel to ePub format.  I am currently in the process of adding "end notes" to the book.  Each will have a flag embedded at the proper spot in the various chapters that is coded as "[See End Note xx]" where xx is a one or two digit number.  Each of the flags has those words surrounded by the HTML that links the flag to the proper end note at the back of the book.
To verify that I have indeed inserted correctly each end note, I copy the book's epub file from my desktop PC to the iPad.  I then do a search in iBooks to locate each occurance of "[See End Note" or just "End Note".  I should see each of these flags listed.  Last night it would list all of them except "[See End Note 28]"!   If I did a search for "28", it would appear.
I then copied just the flag itself ("[See End Note 28]") without the associated linkage HTML to the back of the document, and placed the copy just in front of the paragraph that contains it. Neither of the two flags were found.
I then duplicated just the flags for end notes 27 and 29 which the search function had located.  I placed the copies surrounding the copied flag for 29.  The result was as follows in the text of the book:
    [See End Note 27]
    [See End Note 28]
    [See End Note 29]
Although 27 and 29 were still being shown in their normal places, none of the above three inserted (test) flags was displayed by the search!
It seemed that the iBooks search goes through part of the book, but cannot take the whole book in one piece.  It then continues, but leaves a gap that is not scanned per the search criteria.  To test that theory, I removed the entire text of several chapters that did not contain any end notes.  I then loaded this modified copy of the book into the iPad.  When I ran a search using "End Note", all of the flags (including the special test flags) were displayed.  The list included the "missing" "[See End Note 28]" that cannot be found if the all of the chapters have their text!
I shall be calling Apple in a few minutes to again attempt to get the apparent "bug" (aka design or coding flaw) removed such that it does not
impact the ability of the iPad to be a useful tool.

Not all movie studio signed up to the agreement with Apple to allow redownloading of movies, only those that did will have their movies available in the purchased section of iTunes.

  • Keyword Search Question

    Newbie Alert:
I've searched the forum and can't find a solution to a problem I've encountered. I just moved from Bridge to LR3 for managing my images. In Bridge I developed the bad habit of explicitly adding keywords to my images all the way to the parent (a setting in bridge). For example, the keyword hierarchy for one of my images in Bridge might look like.
    Colorado [x]
            Denver [x]
                    DMNS [x]
Now that I am using LR3, I don't want Denver or Colorado explicitly selected when I choose "DMNS". instead I would like:
    Colorado [-]
            Denver [-]
                    DMNS [x]
Where Denver and Colorado are implicitly selected. When I do a search for "Colorado" LR seems to return all images that are either implicitly or explicitly tagged with that keyword. I need to select only the images where "Colorado" is explicitly selected.
How can I do a search to only find the images explicitly tagged "Colorado"? This seems also related to another "newbie" question I have. Bridge allowed for doing queries based on multiple keywords using a basic set of conditionals. In LR3, "Find" doesn't appear to provide that functionality. How can I do find an image where more than one keyword exists but they are not within the same containing keyword? Or, using this example, find all images that have the keyword "Colorado" but do not include "DMNS"?
    Thank you.

I pretty much consolidated all my keywords once, then never again. It was a PITA even with help from KeywordConsolidator.
Now I enter keywords in Lightroom, then invoke Keyword Consolidator's keyword form to enter title & caption and double-check/correct keyword entry mistakes on the spot (or add a keyword I had forgotten...), since it displays the whole keyword path in a linear list, its easier to see stuff...
I hope Adobe considers some keyword entry enhancements:
    - prompt before creating new keywords.
    - display in list form with paths (hard to see what you've really got in paragraph form without paths).
    - plural / singular / synonym detection and handling.
    - and of course: proper handling of spaces and fix 'Contains Words' bug.
PS - John Ellis has a particularly robust keyword entry alternative if you've interest.
    Have fun,
    Rob

  • IBook LCD Questions (2!)

Sorry to boldly ask two questions in one post, but hopefully someone can help me out.
    1) I came across a cheap (read: free) adapter that I'm trying to get to work with my iBook G4 to display onto a big TV (A 32" Sanyo LCD, but that's kind of irrelevant). This adapter connects to the mini-VGA cable that came with my iBook and turns it into an S-Video or regular video (i think that's called composite? The yellow one). But when I plug it into the TV, no dice. I've had this thing working before on a different TV with a cable that converted the mini VGA to DVI, so I don't see why this isn't working. Is there some software or drivers I need?
    2) Is there any way to use the screen as nothing but a display device? Or is the wiring for the screen deep inside the computer and connected by strange wiring? It sounds stupid, but I know with a regular computer monitor you can do that since the plug in is external.
Well sorry to ramble a bit and hopefully that was coherent enough to understand my jist.
    Appreciate any help at all,
    Andrew.

That, Welcome to the discussion area!
    1) I came across a cheap (read: free) adapter...
You will need Apple's Apple Video Adapter (M9109G/A).
    2) Is there any way to use the screen as nothing but a display device?
    No

  • Want to get an ibook + 1 question

I am looking at lap tops to get. I'm checking out a couple of PC notebooks and the ibook G4 (14 inch). Probably going to get the ibook. I was wondering if anybody could tell me anything that I should purchase with the ibook (i.e. more RAM or something like that). Also if you could share your experiences with it thus far and if you are satisfied with it.
The question I have is that I also have a PC with iTunes and a lot of music on it. I was wondering if it was possible to transfer my music library from PC to ibook via external hard drive. Will it read on Mac's OS.
Any advice or expertise would help. Thanks

Laptop PC or MAC? my 2cent....
We have many Laptop here Acer, Compact, Hp, others.. and Mac.
The Mac we got around 5-7 years ago are still working!
A writer just changed is first Mac laptop (first generation must be over 9 years old!!! The Hard drive can get noisy this tells you that you are due for a changed. Anyway in Oct. 2001 the biggest HD was 48G for a Laptop 2.5" - Today you find 100G for $160 (pageComputer.com. Rules of thumb, 4 years is the limit for a HD. Regardless MAC or PC. Before 2002 the MAC had IBM Hard Drive! Anyway, the look, the care for the CPU, the Add on, Programs, well just simply better for Mac in General. PC are find too but they are PC, Ok for iTunes and the Web usage and Microsoft application but even having your Mac is not like owning a PC. We still have a nice LOOKING Shell iBook Tangerine working for Web etc.. (second generation)we gave it to our kids.
My Laptop is 4 years old PowerBook G4 titanium, still love it today. What I do hate about it? the technology is growing so fast that the Laptop does not have what the new one has today inside it! Someone her got the Dell 17", nice machine got most of it! a good screen and a good price too. Well Apple will have the Intel... then I will get another then with Intel but still a Mac. therefore did you ever find yourself behind the wheels of a nice car? like RR, Bentley, etc... well you got the feeling... it is like buying your Mac! See how CompUSA store is presenting all PC comparing to the MAC line. Movies, Magazine ad, TV show always are showing Mac products without PAYING them for it!!!!!!!!
Ahhh! Software issues? well let me tell you that is it true that PC have 10's of thousand more Stuff (junk)and Free (with some virus). The real programs and the one you need and all utilities are there by the bumdle for you Mac. Do not forget the OS is Unix, you can control Linux (all are free - not the best looking apps), or start a PC without quitting your Mac (Virtual PC like) although not as fast but very impressive (for a show off).
    TIPS:
1- get all the RAM you can get (see Froogle.com, buy a MacAddict Mag or MacWorld - published by PCWorld look at the last pages,
2- get the biggest HD, get the DVD-R (good for Backup). For a Laptop I like to spend the most $$$ every 5 years. For a Station Tower the one just under the best model (technology is just going to fast, that the money spent on the top model is not well spent)
3- Yep! agree on the external HD. Dot Mac is cool for backup too! but do buy an external HD for real back up. or a nice Ipod as a back up? (bad idea, you loose it... you are dead)
4- I did look at prices the other day if you spend lot of money on either one.. the price will be the same! I spent 4 years ago $3650 for the top of the line Laptop. Today is the same price. For the cheapest the Mac start at $950 and PC you can find them just a bit less (Dinner pockect money for 4 years of pleasure?)

  • Ibooks search function slow & sluggish after ios8 upgrade

With a large collection of digital books, I have always loved the ipad and ibooks for the simple fact that the search function was by far superior to those offered by other tablet competitors. I upgraded last night, and have immediately found that the search function is now sluggish and lags as i type (was not this way with ios7). I own an ipad air, and I have compared ibooks on my friends ipad gen 3 who is still on ios7 and hers is faster than mine!
What has changed to justify the sluggish feel and speed to what was once a very light and speedy app???

I experience this, too. I wonder whether the iBooks library search now extends to one's iCloud collection, slowing the process If that's it, there should be a configuration option to turn off the "feature."

  • Student! Powerbook 15" or Ibook 14", questions?

I'm a student about to go to college, and recently have been won over by the mac OS from friend and visit to Apple Store.
I'm not sure whether an ibook 14" or powerbook 15" would be a better choice? and have a few questions that would affect my choice!
-Is the overheating problem really bad with the 15" powerbook? (i was set on getting this model but after having read about this problem, seems quite bad???)
-Is the screen resolution on the 14" ibook bad?
-Is the ibook 14" realtively fast at dvd encode, cd rip etc? (the processing speed made me look at powerbook more)
-Is the 128MB Video upgrade worth getting for powerbook?
-Is the widescreen worth getting over ibook's screen, when am big DVD fan? or do DVD's play well on ibook?
    Please help!

Is the overheating problem really bad with the 15" powerbook? (i was set on getting this model but after having read about this problem, seems quite bad???)
Don't know check the powerbook discussions
Is the screen resolution on the 14" ibook bad?
Not at all. The number of pixels is the same as on the 12" however so there is a little debate over the crispness of the image but I think it's great.
Is the 128MB Video upgrade worth getting for powerbook?
I would love to have 128mb and if you go with a powerbook and you use graphics heavily (games, photoshop, imovie, video etc.) definetly go for it although it may contribute to the heat factor.
Is the widescreen worth getting over ibook's screen, when am big DVD fan? or do DVD's play well on ibook?
DVD's play as well as the do on most pc's and with the proper connection to a tv you'll get a great picture. A Powerbook seems to be an expensive choice for playing DVD's. As an substitute for a tv/dvd player the ibook or powerbook (ie in a dorm room) will be just fine. Keep in mind that a widescreen dvd will still have bars above and below on a widescreen 15" powerbook.
For my money the ibook is the better deal. If you want you can use the money you save to buy a nice 21" widescreen lcd tv and a dvd player for your movie collection. Having said that if you are a big gamer or heavy graphics user the powerbook may be a better choice (a tower is even better for these types of operations). It really depends on what you plan to use it for.
    Good luck with your decision

  • Ibook search function failing

Hi I am proofing an ibook on an ipad2 and after incorporating the corrections on a mac, I reloaded the file to iBooks multiple times, using Apples bookproofer 1.0.1. on the mac.
Workflow: Indesign epub unzipped then to dreamweaver xhtml file reconverted to epub using a applescript called epub zip 1.0.3.
I am now finding that the search function is limited to the first three letters of some words.  The search function is not finding whole words, rather only partially finding words in the document.  This is happening for words that are occurring multiple times in teh document, some very simple words ie Tony.  It finds the first three occurrences but not the ones later in the document.
This phenomenon was not occurring when the book was initially installed.  The problem has only been noticed after multiple uploads of the ibook during the proofing process.
Another example of the issue is as follows:
Type or select 'volendam' or 'Volendam' and it finds nothing
Type 'volen' and it finds nothing
Type 'vol' and it finds the first three leters of Volendam (FYI A Dutch fishing village) along with multitude other words like 'volume'.
I have done a reset…reset all settings.  I have deleted the ibook and reinstalled.  I have deleted the ibook app and reinstalled.  Turned of autocorrection autospelling, no joy.
I have loaded the ibook on another ipad2 and the search works correctly – so the issue is this ipad2.  It's not jailbroken.
It doesn't appear to happen in other ibooks, although I haven't had time to fully check.
    Any help appreciated.
    regards
    Di

    Update,
The  problem was overcome by installing the ibook thru itunes and syncing.  It appears no longer as a proof ibook but as an ibook.
    All the searches work correctly.
    regards

  • Share files in ibook - networking question

Hello, I have a networking question.
I have a brand spakin' new 13' MacBook Pro and an older 14' iBook G4 (with a broken airport wireless card).
My internet is set up so that I have the modem connected to a "wired" ethernet hub, then to an airport express. This way I have wireless for my new MacBook Pro, and I can connect my old iBook to the internet with a ethernet cable.
Herein lies my question: I want to access all my files on my ibook from my MacBook Pro. I've tried the file sharing and etc on system preferences, but for some reason it still doesn't work. I believe its because they are on different networks? (one wireless, one wired?)
Any ideas to make my ibook a simple file server.

    Try repairing disk permissions.
*"The external HD has two partitions, one is a backup of the ibook, and the other has mixed media. When I access my ibook over the network, Only the backup partition appears, and not the mixed media partition. "* Try repairing permissions but not sure if that's going to work. Can't hurt to try.
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Also, your profile indicates you are running 10.4.3. If that is the case, you might want to run Software Updates (from the Apple Menu , then click Software Updates.

  • FAQ: General iBook G3 Questions and Answers

*What is the newest version of OS X that can be run on an iBook G3?*
Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 is the newest version that can be run on an iBook G3. Leopard 10.5 will only run on G4 or Intel systems and Snow Leopard will only run on Intel systems.
*What is the latest version of iTunes that can run on an iBook G3?*
The current (as of this writing) version of iTunes, 9.1.1., can be run on an iBook G3. However, note that video playback for iTunes content, is limited. Music playback and Cover Flow, operate as expected.
*Video playback is choppy. Is there a way to improve video playback?*
Youtube playback can be improved. Read my tutorial on improving Youtube playback, for more information. Video playback for iTunes and Quicktime, as of this writing, can not be improved on an iBook G3. Videos sold from the iTunes store, utilize the H.264 video codec, which is a bit too taxing for the meager video cards found in the iBook G3. DVD playback is a smooth experience and low resolution videos (320x240) should playback with few hiccups.
*What is the most RAM I can put into an iBook G3?*
There is 128MB of RAM soldered into the logic board of the iBook G3. You can install a 512MB chip to give your iBook G3 a total of 640MB of RAM.
*Can the iBook G3 run iLife?*
Yes it can. The most up to date version that can be run, is iLife '06.
*Is the iBook G3 a good laptop*
The iBook G3 is still a competent unit for internet browsing, listening to music, chatting and doing homework or office work. However, the gaming capabilities are limited due to the age of the product as are the streaming video capabilities (e.g. Hulu, Netflix etc). For those who are curious about the Mac community and Mac computers, the iBook G3 is an affordable way to sample the experience. For those looking for the full experience, the iBook G3 may not offer all that you are looking for. The best way to find out if the iBook G3 is right for you, is to read reviews and watch video demos and tutorials on Youtube.
Please feel free to add queries to this thread. I will do my best to amend the FAQ to address any new questions that are asked.

One iBook G3 (Dual USB) model has only 64 MB of RAM soldered to the logic board. In that case, the RAM is limited to 64 + 512 = 576 MB.
I usually advise people to keep the iBook G3 (Dual USB) in Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) rather than upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Since Tiger requires 256 MB of RAM as a minimum, it's advisable to have a version of the OS which will run on the logic board RAM in case of the infrequent happenstance of RAM failure. If this happens, it's easy to remove the extra RAM to see if it may be the problem when you can run on logic board RAM only. If you stay in Panther, you're not running Dashboard, either, so disabling it (as mentioned in your other thread) is unnecessary.
Are you aware of how Apple Discussions works? What you have written are basically User Tips, but since you are not yet a Level 2 member, these cannot be placed in the _User Tips Library_. Unfortunately, they are doomed to sink to the bottom of the forum.
I can ask the Hosts if there is something we can do about this. Would you be amenable to having someone who is a Level 2 or above enter your posts into the User Tips Library while giving you attribution, perhaps? (This suggestion may disappear if the Hosts frown upon it.)

  • Upgrading my Ibook g4 Question?

    Hello,
I love my ibook g4, there will never be a comp. that i will trust more. The Problem is alot of programs i am desiring are for 10.4+. I don't know if i am in the right place to ask, but i was wondering if i could upgrade my g4 to a suitable version of 10.4 and keep files and or programs on the computer. Without some of the backup disks, it would be impossible for me to upgrade.
    The Specs are as follows:
    ibook g4
    processor speed 1.02 ghz
    hard drive 30gigs
    cd-rw/dvd-r Combo Drive
    w/
    Airport extreme card
    ilife.....etc
    Any comments or ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, you can upgrade your computer's OS to Tiger (10.4x) using the Archive and Install option which will preserve your settings, preferences and data, as previously noted and linked by Jason. However, before you undertake any major procedure, and installation is one of them, you should have a reliable up-to-date backup of everything you cannot afford to lose. For more information on backing up, please post back and ask.
The move from Panther to Tiger is an upgrade, which involves purchasing new software disks. You can download updates once you have the basic software installed, but the initial installation is from disks you have to purchase. See Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger. The specs you list do not tell us how much RAM you have installed.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail version of Tiger. Your computers's RAM will max out at 1.25 GB. I suggest that you get to as close to that as possible. Your other specs look OK, except that if you do a lot of music or photos you may find your 30 GB HDD filling up pretty quickly.
Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or other retailers, on 4 CDs, from applerescue.
Please note that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided since they are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and will therefore, very likely, cause problems during or after installation. On the legal side, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.
