IBooks support on epub 3.0 with MathML?

Dear All,
Latest iBook App (V 1.2.2)release during April - Will iBook app support all features of ePub 3.0 standards ????? (rich media and interactivity, compatible with multiple devices, support for foreign language and non-Roman scripts and supporting design-intensive books, comics, and magazines).
I am eagerly waiting for the release of completed version of ePub 3.0 spec. To test them in my iPad.
Mean whlie; I started converting few test samples using working draft speciation of ePub 3.0 .release on 20110105 by IDPF
For example: MathML was embedded inside an ePub file and further updated the OPF file as instructed in IDPF-ePub 3.0 working draft.
We used iBooks v 1.2.2 to view the developed epub 3.0 file but we result with broken math content.(i.e. MathMLwas not rendered properly)
Then we used ibis Reader(PCversion) which rendered all MathML perfectly - please refer the screen shots
Now we would like to see the compatibility and rendered MathML when the ePub file is used in iBook app of iPad.; if so please help us to view our developed ePub 3.0 file.
Any help would be grateful
Thanks,
ROCXY.

Have you got an answer?
It's not possible to obtain answers from Apple about such things -- they never provide advance info about new features and do not respond to suggestions for them.  If you want a feature, you should post feedback yourself. The more requests they get, the more likely it will eventually be adopted.

How can I get the iBook app on my Mac to backup ePubs I created with Pages on my iPad? Only seems to want to work with purchased books from the ibook store. The problem is, once I create a document in Pages and turn it into an ePub to be opened in iBooks, I delete the document in Pages, because I don't need two copies taking up space on my iPad. Before Maverick, iTunes would backup everything in my iBook app on my iPad. If something ever happened to my iPad, all of my created ePubs would be lost and I would be screwed. I suppose I could keep everything on Pages and go to iCloud and download my documents to my Mac, but that is a lot of steps. I may have to do that if there is no other way, but I am hoping someone will have the answer for me. Pretty disappointed in iBooks app for Mac at this point.

iBooks only syncs purchased books. Others must be synced in iTunes.

  • IBooks support for auxiliary content and linking?

I have a couple of questions for the iPad/iBooks owners out there that I hope can answer them for me. I'm in Canada, so I won't be getting an iPad for at least another month or more (also waiting for the 3G), and I don't have any readily available access to one to try for myself.
    1) This is a bit technical, but I'll just come right out and ask it. How is iBooks support for auxiliary content (non-linear content documents, in ePub parlance)? Does it do anything special with it (pop-ups, tooltips, side bars, slide-out panels, etc...), or does it just ignore it and lump it in with the rest of the "real" content?
From a cursory glance, it looks like Microsoft has done something similar with their proprietary .LIT ebooks (which are apparently based roughly on the same specs as ePub, i.e. XHTML and CSS). But I get the feeling this functionality has gone the way of multi-angle DVDs, which is to say no one bothers with it.
    2) And my next question comes from having tried various ePub readers on the iPhone. None, but Stanza seem to even get this remotely correct (some completely ignore them, some render them but don't do anything with them, and one attempts to do something with them but spits out errors). I have an ePub that uses footnotes heavily (in the dead-tree version they're footnotes, in the ePub they're essentially endnotes). The ePub in question doesn't have chapters, but it has been broken up into multiple chunks (multiple XHTML content documents behind the scenes). The footnotes are accomplished by linking (and back-linking) a la standard HTML hrefs between said chunks. I assume iBooks is Webkit-based and this isn't a problem at all (i.e. it's just like using a web browser in that regard)? Also, am I correct that there's no "back" button/function except in the TOC?
    3) Based on all the PR and guided-tours, etc..., I presume iBooks strictly conforms to a paginated view? There's no scrolling layout/view, and by extension a way to do auto-scrolling?
    4) How does text-to-speech work? Will it read the whole book, or does it only read, for instance, your current selection?
    Thanks!

It isn't handled by the reader at all. It is handled by the ePUB generating application. Non-linear content, if included, is usually ordered as found, i.e., it uses a left-most, top-to-bottom ordering algorithm. This usually means it ends up at the end unless aligned to the left edge of the source document above the inline content or interspersed between other non-linear and linear segments if also included. To ensure content displays with associated text, it is normally anchored, inline, just before or just after the desired text. Some generating apps indicate an ability to perform left/right alignments with text wrapping around inline images but I have yet to personally try this.
You'll have to excuse my ignorance, Jon, but I barely understand anything you wrote just then. I've only been playing with ePubs for the last several days, so I still have a very limited understanding of the specs, and have only a small collection of samples (which are very simply constructed), so I don't know the full breadth of what's possible in ePub. For instance, in my example ePub, one content document ends at the end of a paragraph, and the next document begins at the start of the next paragraph.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my current understanding of "content documents" are that they're essentially XHTML pages, and the only reason they're broken up inside the container is either for semantic reasons, to reduce initial load times, or to support older readers. And basically a reader will load them sequentially when it comes time to display them (i.e. next chapter, via a link, etc...), assuming in the 'spine' section they're listed as being linear (either explicitly or by default).
The only examples I've seen where a particular 'itemref' has had its 'linear' attribute set to 'no' are things like covers and footnote sections (I believe the IDPF also uses the example of an answerkey in a textbook). I guess it's a two-fold question. I'm having a hard time envisioning what other elements in a book one would want to mark as non-linear. I guess things like a glossary, a table of illustrations, an index, etc... (i.e. stuff that's important to the book, but you wouldn't want to read linearly with the actual content of the book). I should point out I write Windows apps for a living, and have no understanding of how the publishing industry works, or what goes into the making, designing, or laying out a book.
And second, it seems the specs leave it completely up to the reading device to determine what it wants to do with these non-linear documents. Hence, why I asked how iBooks handles them.
You lost me when you started talking about edges, anchoring, and wrapping. To me, that sounds more like formatting decisions one would have to make inside an XHTML document. But I'm always open to being schooled on a subject.
I have an ePub that uses footnotes heavily (in the dead-tree version they're footnotes, in the ePub they're essentially endnotes).
I believe this is essentially correct. Since ePUB files have no defined pages, the footnotes become endnotes the the specific generating application determining if they display at the end of the book or at the end of the chapter. E.g., Since Adobe InDesign requires segments (cover page, title page, chapters, etc.) be generated as independent documents with are later assembled as a "book," I believe its "endnotes" automatically display at the end of the individual documents which make up the book while other applications use inline tags to break up a single "book" document into independent XHTML documents but place all "endnotes" at the end of the "book" rather than within each XHTML document created from the tagged segment where found in the main source document.
From what I've seen in the specs, it makes sense that, with the way the specs are at this time, the onus is on the generator to figure out how to use and where to put the footnotes. Without a standard way of defining them, there's no way for a reader device to know what it's looking at is a footnote or not.
I was just hoping in my heart of hearts that Apple had somehow solved the problem. After all, they were the ones throwing the word "magical" around when describing the iPad.
As a side note, would you know if iBooks properly supports the page-break-before and page-break-after CSS styles?
Based on all the PR and guided-tours, etc..., I presume iBooks strictly conforms to a paginated view? There's no scrolling layout/view, and by extension a way to do auto-scrolling?
I've not found a way to scroll but then I prefer paging through the document with a tap than continuously "swiping" and so have not looked all that hard.
Yeah, not a dealbreaker by any means. Just something I've started playing with on my iPhone reader, and have kinda started to enjoy. But I'll make sure not to get too comfortable with it now.
As for the text-to-speech (which I wouldn't use anyway), I guess it's using the VoiceOver APIs that Apple includes in the SDK(?), and, no, it won't automatically read a whole book for you, but it will read at most a page at a time. Apparently, this is their work-around for the same grief that Amazon got with the Kindle's speech feature.

  • How can I ensure the content in iBooks on my iPad also syncs with my mini iPad?

How can I ensure my content in iBooks on my iPad 3 syncs with the iBooks in my mini iPad?

If they are iTunes purchased/downloaded ibooks then as long as they are still in the store you should be able to re-download them via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app on the second device. For ebooks and epubs from other sources you will need to sync them - even though they aren't iTunes purchases you should be able to copy them from a device to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases and you can then sync them to the other device. You can then keep bookmarks and collections in-line between the two devices via Settings > iBooks on the two devices (the 'sync collections' will keep collections in-line between devices, but it won't copy the copy the actual ibooks between devices).

  • IBooks will not sync PDF collections with my IPhone. It syncs the collection title but not the content?

My IBooks will not sync PDF content with my IPhone. It syncs the collection title but no content. Both devices are set to sync collections? Any ideas how to fix this?

The 'sync collections' setting does not copy books or PDFs between devices - all it does is if you have the book on both devices and you move it into a collection on one of them, then it will be put into the same collection on the other device.
You will need to sync each PDF that you want on your phone. If you don't currently have them on your computer then connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over (that should copy PDFs and/or epubs that are in the iBooks app, not just actual ibooks), and if using a Mac with Mavericks on it do File > Move Books From iTunes in the iBooks app on it, and you can then sync them to your iPhone.

  • What wireless security does my iBook support?

I have a D-Link 624 wireless router, with upgraded firmware and running plain 802.11 B/G (no turbo). No problem connecting with WPA2 Personal using my Macbook or my son's Macbook Pro (though both have frequent loss of internet connectivity, which may be a problem others have reported with recent versions of OS X).
However we have not been able to get a wireless connection using PowerPC laptops -- a 2005 PowerBook 12", and a 2001 white iBook 700 MHz.
All these Macs are running OS X 10.4.10.
The PowerBook came with an Airport card that supports 802.11g, and ought to support WPA2. It sees the correct security type and lets me enter the password. If I enter a wrong password that is reported. If I enter the right password I get that less than helpful message that there was an error connecting. Retries do not help. It works fine with other wireless networks.
The iBook supports only the older 802.11b, as far as I know. When I select the home network (which at the moment is broadcasting its SSID), it comes up asking for a WEP password. I can select WPA2 and enter a password, but if I do I get a message that suggests that the router does not support that kind of security.
I really do not want to downgrade my wireless security to WEP. The latest exploits apparently allow breaking it in a minute or so. I'm pretty sure that I remember getting a friend's PC to work with WPA (not WPA2) using 802.11b, though it required both new drivers and an OS patch.
Is there any hope of getting the old iBook to connect using any version of WPA? Any hints on tricks to make the much newer PowerBook work?

Try downgrading to 10.4.8 or 10.4.9 or earlier version of Tiger. Airport connectivity problems have been often reported problem with 10.4.10.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Yup, it was uploaded to our school Wiki as a PDF, and Pages did open it.  I was then able to move it to iBooks, but I'd rather avoid the extra steps.

Hi, I have a Mac iBook PowerPC G4 1.33 GHz with Mac OSX 10.4.11.
I would like to connect an 20" Apple Cinema Display with ADC connection to it, but it seems impossible because the cord on the Cinema Display doesn't fit the Display port on the iBook G4!
May anybody suggest how to solve the problem?
Is the 20" Apple Display (aluminium enclosure) compatible with my iBook G4 Display port?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your replay, Cornelius.
    Can you be more specific?
    Where the Display Forum is?
    I can't find it.
My question was: Is the Aluminium 20" Apple Display" (not the ADC Apple Cinema Display) compatible with the iBook G4 Display port?
I know for sure that the Apple ADC-DVI adapter can not be used to connect a Cinema Display to my iBook G4 port.
    Please help.

  • Does E71 (RM-346) support PBAP? If yes, with which...

    Dear Friends,
i've carefully searched the Nokia Discussion forums for the above question, and so far there's no authoritative response. One lucky Nokia E71 owner was able to get phonebook synchronization with his (Audi?), but in many other cases the results were unsuccessful.
The device specs on Nokia Forum also do not list PBAP as a supported profile of the E71
I have an E71 (RM-346), with firmware 400.21.013. In all my tests thus far with my Nissan QQ 2010 head unit (Daewoo AGC-0070RF), i was able only once to successfully transfer the phonebook to the head unit (extremely fast). Despite my many attempts, even by unpairing/pairing, i never managed to get the (phonebook transfer) to work.
I also tested with my company C7-00, which officially supports PBAP. It's working fine with the QQ head unit, and phonebook transfer happens extremely fast, every time the handset and the head-unit establish the (authorized) BT connection.
So, i'm desperately looking for an authoritative response here - does the E71 (RM-346) support PBAP, and if yes - with which firmware version?
    Thank you all...
    Paris

@ aspergerguy: Thank you very much for your fast response.
I had checked this thread in detail, and unfortunately it does not provide a conclusive answer. It is one of the few answers stating that E71 works with Audi cars - albeit using HSP, whereas other threads are negative on E71 working with BMW/Volvos, and are also negative about the availability of PBAP on the E71.
In my successful experiment, which - again - only worked once and managed to sync my Phonebook's 522 contacts to the Nissan Head Unit in a few seconds, was based on the following setup:
    - PC Suite Sync (profile) installed on the E71 device, and successfuly sync'ing all my data to my Windows 7 x64 system using PC Suite 7 on the laptop. Connection = Bluetooth
    - Sync profile on the E71 configured to allow server-initiated sync requests (in our case here, server = car Head Unit), and configured to always accept the sync requests without a prompt.
    - most probably the sync was successful, due to the Head Unit software managing to pull the data from the PC Suite-based sync profile over Bluetooth. In other words, that was probably a lucky shot for me.
All subsequent efforts with this setup were unsuccessful - you can see the sync starting on the E71 device once BT conn is established by the car head unit, but the sync is canceled right away.
So, let's see if we can get an authoritative answer on the PBAP availability on the E71 (and specific firmware for that), as it appears that Nokia handsets that do have this profile, work fine with phonebook sync to the car head unit...
    Thanks again.
