ICal 10.5.5 eats up my memory; crashes all the time.

After I upgraded my iCal to 10.5.5, I noticed that it started going haywire.
I was trying to put details on an appointment entry when the dreaded turning circle appeared. I noticed also that my Macbook seemed to slow down. I checked my iStat Pro widget and I was shocked with what I saw - iCal's eating up my processor and memory!
After a while, the thing just crashed.
Got any ideas why did happened and how to fix this?

Yes, I think most of us do understand what open source software is. It sounds as if you don't. Here's some information:
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved forcopyright holders are provided under an open-source license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software.
Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-sourcedevelopment and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements.

Yes, Tom Wu of Stanford wrote a paper on something called Secure Remote Access Protocol. It's a form of Asymetric Key Exchange and has nothing to do with hacking anything. It's actually intended to protect data.

  • Inactive memory takes all the memory - please help

I have a Macbook Pro - August 2009, upgraded version to 2.66 MHZ, advance display card, Dual core.
I recently upgraded the RAM to 8GB (Kingston) to clear more memory for my massive application use, the thing is it didn't solve anything because the issue I had problems with - Inactive Memory, wasn't resolved.
Inactive memory supposed to hold the memory for the apps you closed in case you'll run them once again, but it NEVER clears the memory, I can see the "blue" color taking all the free mem and the computer slows down! no free mem what so ever.
Now the Inactive mem grows enormously and gets to be more than 4GB, it has the same effect, the memory runs out!
Is there a way to fix it? I'm going crazy with that.. what a terrible design!
iFreeMem doesn't work on the 8GB, I'm at a loss..
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Eli.

Sounds like you have never done a PRAM reset or a SMC reset. Do both and see if this helps:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Dynamic Memory is not working all the time

We are in the process off moving our 2008R2 VM's from the 2008R2 HyperV servers to new Server 2012R2 Hosts.
We shut down the VM's copy the files and VHD's to the new CSV's en import the VM in the Hyperv Manager. Then we make them high available in the Failover Cluster Manager (Configure role - Virtual machine). We mount the integration tools and update the
    VM to version 6.3.9600.16384
    For a specific type of VM (mostly RDS Host servers) we always had Dynamic Memory configured (when they were hosted on de 2008R2 platform), so we are using the same settings on the 2012r2 platform. The memory settings were;
    Startup memory: 1024 MB
    Minimum memory: 1024 MB
    Maximum memory: 12288 MB
These VM's reboot every morning, this is done for specific reasons. But now once in a while (once per week/2 weeks) we notice that the VM's are not using more memory then 1024 MB while the demand is much higher. Rebooting the server helps most of the times,
live migrating to another host also helps. In the VM we see that memory usage in the taskmanager is 99-100%, and after the move it immediately starts using more than the minimum configured amount.
Until the failover the memory usage was 1024 MB and it did not get any higher.
This happened several times. Last week we changed the Memory configuration to:
    Startup memory : 2048 MB
    Minimum memory: 2048 MB
    Maximum memory: 12288 MB
But this morning we had a call about the performance of one of the VM's, We saw that it was only using 2 GB memory while the demand was much higher. After live migrating it to another host it started using more memory immediately.
The 2012R2 hosts are not overcommited, there is a lot of memory still available for the VM's. Those VM's never had this problem on the 2008R2 Hyperv platform.
    Any idea why this happens?
    Peter Camps

    Peter,
I think this is a bug of some sort. I say that because the components that make up dynamic memory are as follows.
Memory Balancer(Host service, coordinates how memory changes are made.) This is also what shows the memory demand counter i believe.
Dynamic Memory Virtualization Service Provider (this is included your VMWP.exe proccess, one per VM. Essentially how it runs on the host. He listens to the Service Client for metrics)
Dynamic Memory Virtualization Service Client (this is inside the VM and reports to the Dynamic Memory Virtualizaton Service Provider.)
Since you live migrated the machine it made dynamic memory work on the other host. This means the Service Client is running in the client and shouldn't be an issue. The Memory Balancer is the server and shouldn't be the issue, so this means the "Dynamic
Memory Virtualization Service Provider" is in question. When you live migrate the machine its going to create a new VMWP.exe process on the clustered server. So now the question is it the host that couldn't listen to the service or the worker process
skipped a beat and has a bug.
Out of curiosity does it happen to both hosts? Also have you profiled the servers to see how much memory they really require on start-up? When you reboot the RDS servers, how many VM's do you reboot and is it a staggered process?

  • Memory Cap for a Windows Service to run in the background all the time on Windows 8.1 Device

I have a Windows Store app that would run on a 2GB windows 8.1 Pro tablet. I want to create a service that would run in the background and more than one store app can utilize that service. The question I have is , is there any memory usage limit for the
service to run on a 2 GB RAM tablet?
I am expecting that the service might use 900 MB of RAM when its operational .
    Kindly help

    Hi,
For this situation, it seems that you create a wcf service and host the service on windows service which is running on the 2GB windows 8.1 Pro tablet. And other store app in the tablet can utilize that service.
If you want to limit the memory usage for the service, it's recommended that you could host the wcf service on other machine, such as a computer. You just call the service from the store application if you want to invoke the service.

  • Why is all my memory getting used all the time?

    Hey
My mac is recently very slow. I have posted a tread about this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23923203#23923203
I have now found out that my memory useage is very high. I do sometimes use 3.99 out of 4. Most of the time it is around 2,5-3. Also severeal processes is running multiply, is that supossed? Please help in any way!
    Nikolaj

The memory usage you are seeing is normal on Mavericks.  It uses memory differnlty than previous operating systems.  I feel bad that no one reponsded to your Nov 26 posting.  Here are some pointers on how to speedup a Mac, some of which you have already attempted. 4 GB of memory should work well on Mavericks.  It does on my 4 GB Mac.
    I'll respond to that thread.

My ical recently crashed and all information was lost, Luckily I have everything backed up. Anyway I have decided not to use ical anymore as it is not syncing with my blackberry either. The problem is that it keeps opening not matter how many times I quit it. Can anyone please help?

    Greetings,
It sounds like you have alarms set. Before it crashed did you have some alarms set? You might want to look for all the iCal files, and delete them. Or see if you can find why it's not syncing with your blackberry and fix that.

You'd have to look into Activity Monitor utility, to see if any applications or processes are running or hogging system resources; not just RAM (as it may seem OK even if it isn't; esp in Mavericks) but in the areas of hard drive capacities. Could be you have some other issues not just a too-full hard disk drive, or not enough RAM installed.

Another utility that could show you plenty of busywork things going on, is Console. The system logs in there can show a detailed list of tons of activity. Perhaps some of the often-repeated results may be worth considering; and go by the time (day, hour, minute) you notice the spinning wheel; look into the logs from then.
Have you tried starting up in SafeBoot (shift key held on startup, then login screen appears, hold down shift key again when you login) and then run Disk Utility's repair disk permissions? When done, you could try & restart the computer normally.
If you happen to get incorrect specification RAM (close but not correct) that could also play into a spinning wheel deal; however the problem may be something else that RAM did not cure. Yet bad or incorrect RAM only adds to a pre-existing issue, since it could not solve it. Same with a System Upgrade. To upgrade to Mavericks with problems already does not mean they would go away; often that makes the first condition harder to resolve.
    Good luck & happy computing!

I could live with an applet taking 40mb on a more beefy machine but being just behind chrome looks wrong. So i'm not sure what has changed, at the moment i just kill the process but i considered switching to wicd if it's ever better but it appears that it's not well maintained.
    Any hint?

    Thanks for your answers.
I needed to use my computer and it wasn't usable so i just reinstalled my distro and went back to normal, while tweaking the OS i made various reboots to check if it happened again and how...
And the problem of my system taking 240ish MB at boot vs 75MB is actually the nvidia drivers, after installing nvidia-304xx the memory went up a lot, but removing the driver and switching back to nouveau actually make the system way less greedy memory-wise, there is still a bit of mystery in one of the case where everything was fine but nm-applet but i think it's half solved here.
PS : I gave shot at zswap but it made my computer unusable and freeze a lot

  • ICal trying to update all the time at start up

I am using a iMac with Mountain Lion software. When ical starts up under login items it also says it is trying to update the software (the old way with a bar) but it never does anything so I just cancel the command. Does anyone have a solution or answer to this problem. Thanks Dennis

Just to advise everyone, after a lot of discussion with other Mac users, I removed ical from startup items and it worked fine as a normal opening of the app.  I them re-entered ical into my startup items and rs-started and it now works fine.

  • ITunes tells me my IPhone doesn't have enough memory for all the items in my iTunes library...

However, i had about a gigabyte (or so) free before I added only ten more songs to my library. Now, though, when I try to sync, I get the following message: The iPhone “John Masella’s iPhone” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 1.05 GB required). Initially, ITunes told me I needed about 3 gigabytes, but I deleted some pictures and apps. I don't know what to do at this point, because I really have nothing else I can delete. If anyone could provide me with some assistance, I would be very appreciative.
Essentially, I have 3.74 GB free and am only syncing ten more songs to my phone, but ITunes tells me there is not enough memory.

I had a similar problem, and other answers allude to the kind of solution that works. What was rather annoying for me was that, by deleting a few apps, the iTunes display suggested I should have plenty of room. Furthermore, the error message included the bizarre phrase "the required space is 1.26MB but only 126MB is available": yes, more space available than needed by a factor of 100!
What seems to be the case is that the sync does not necessarily remove everything you specify for removal before copying things on that you want  on the device. Therefore, even if you have enough space for what you intend to have on your device at the end of the sync, it won't help if the space is insufficient to copy at least some things on in the first place. So I actually solved the problem by deleting one of the apps on the iPhone, which was an app I was going to remove anyway. In general (on iOS 8), go to Settings | General | Usage | Storage then choose something you are happy to be without.

  • Does iCal sync with your iPhone automatically without hooking your iPhone up to the computer all the time?  Does it automatically show up on your Calendar on your iPhone like how Gmail does that?

I want to set up a calendar on my iCal but I don't want to do it unless I know it will sync automatically with my MacBook and iPhone.  Say I input an event on my iPhone, will it automatically show up on my computer's iCal right after I set the event?  I know Google Calendar does that and I wanted to see if iCal does the same thing without the hassle of connecting my iPhone to my MacBook.

In order to do this you need to sync to a CalDAV server: MobileMe has been used for this but you can't start a new account now. However iCloud is due to be rolled out next Wednesday and if you sign up for that (it's free) you can sync your Mac and your iPhone to it and it will behave as you want.

  • N73 - Memory card disconnecting all the time

Didnt have this problem before. It started happening when I updated to new firmware week ago. When I use data on memory card (mp3 / excel / word / copy data / take pictures / just surf memory card) it disconects!
With message: "Removing memory card is not safe if you don't select "remove memory card"."
Sometimes it passes only few seconds from acessing memory card to disconnecting, sometimes I manage to use memory card even for 10 or more minutes, max is about 1hour or so.
Memory card is takeMS 1GB miniSD and it worked fine before firmware update. How can it be fixed?
    Thank you!

Did you find a solution? I have the same problem and indeed just after the firmware update.

  • When I try to open Firefox, it says it is running in the Task manager, but will not open until the memory has reached about 100,000k. Also, it keeps NOT responding all the time, and freezes up.

I have done everything on the support page. I am running Windows Vista, and I am running Firefox 4.01. I have even tried running in safe mode. I have updated my plugins, and then disabled plugins and extensions.

Hello Pohaku66, any luck if you [https://support.mozilla.org/kb/firefox-already-running-not-responding#w_remove-the-profile-lock-file remove the profile lock file] ?
