ICal Alarm Preferences?

Is there any way to change preferences in ICal so that an alarm is created automatically when you create an appointment? It's possible to do this in MS Outlook, so I'd hate to think that Mac doesn't have something similar. It's way too easy to forget to set an alarm, and then miss the appointment.

jacksterne,
you may want to look at this plug in, ical fix - it will work with tiger, not sure about leopard, but i see you have 10.4.11, so it should not be a problem: http://www.robertblum.com/articles/2006/07/17/icalfix-05-universal-binary
ical fix will let you set different alarms.
hope this helps

  • Ical alarm keeps trying to open file from old location

I have an iCal alarm to open an accounts file each day.
I moved the file to another folder,
and selected the new location iniCal.
    It always gives me this:
Could not open file because 'Old/Path/to/File'  could not be found.
When I look at the alarm section in the iCal event, there is a list of files.
When I choose the file (with the same file name) in the NEW folder, this list of files doesnt seem to update.
Is there of forcing iCal to open my new file path?
or a way of taking the OLD file out of this list?
    Thank you for your help
    Frazer

I just found how to removed the old files from my list
    in the terminal I type:
    open library/preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
and then delete the entries under PersistentMenu
Would still love to hear a more user friendly way to do this.
And a way to just get iCal to open the new file path, or how best to report this bug to apple

  • Why are iCal alarms coming up with a black rectangle?

Why are iCal alarms coming up with a black rectangle? I'm running 10.3.9 and iCal v. 1.5.2. This started after I did software updates this week.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I solved it in my case by going to System Preferences>Internet & Network>QuickTime>Advanced, then clicking the checkbox to Enable Flash. I also had to quit and restart iCal.
I think the Quicktime715 update that recently came out had something to do with it.
It seems that the black box is supposed to be a movie of a vibrating alarm clock, and apparently that movie uses Flash.
I hope this fix works for you too.

  • ICal Alarm on desktop won't go away

An iCal Alarm notice came up on my desktop. Usually one can cancel or close that notification box. But, this time the notice box will NOT go away. I can't close it, move it, delete it or anything else.
How can I get it to close - get if off my desktop?? Nothing so far has worked.

    baronpilot,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Nothing so far has worked.
Could you clarify your troubleshooting steps...what have you tried so far?
In the meantime since I do not know what you have tried:
The first and easiest troubleshooting step involves replacing/refreshing the com.apple.iCal.plist file.
Quit iCal and find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Drag the file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior.

  • ICal Alarm is almost off the page

When my iCal alarm notifies me, it is so far to the right I can not see it without dragging it to the center of the page. Is there a preference somewhere that I can set?

  • ICal Alarm show event button broken

When an iCal alarm reminder pops up, clicking the button to show the details of the event has no effect. This is a new problem since using the transfer wizard to move to a new computer.
I tried deleting all the iCal preferences and searching the discussions, and to no avail. Any ideas of things to try or similar experiences?

  • ICal alarm malfunction

My alarms work fine if I happen to have the computer on when the alarms go off. But, if an alarm is scheduled to go off at 4pm, for example, for an evening event, and I turn the computer on at 4:30, the alarm does not go off. This has caused me a few problems with missed meetings.
I have the "turn alarms off when computer is off" box unchecked. Both iCal and iCal alarm scheduler are in my startup items. I have tried deleting all iCal plists, and the cache file, and restarting with no success.
What am I missing? any suggestions?

A Eureka! For some reason, on this Mac, if I check the preference box "turn off alarms when iCal is not open" it works fine. Now, if I have an alarm set to go off at 10:00am and I start up my computer at say 10:30am, the 10am alarm shows up just fine.
The wording on this preference is a bit confusing, but from other discussion comments, it seems that other Macs are working with the box unchecked.
    Anyway, I'm a happy camper.

  • ICal alarm sound

My iCal alarm works except there is no sound. Just the alarm window with a pulsating alarm clock. Any suggestions? Thanks

Check if your sound is on and how loud it is set, if that doesn't work check your sound settings in the system preferences > sound > Output (tab) and select the correct output device!

  • MY iCal alarms do NOT work...

MY iCal alarms do NOT work since January 2009! Not during Leopard and not now in Snow Leopard. I have tried desperately to get my sounds back and checked ALL preferences for iCal. Anyone else have this problem and WHAT can I do about it? What is the "fix" for this stupid glitch???? 911...

+*MY iCal "Update" to those who might experience the same i-s-s-u-e of no alarms popping up and no sound either.+*
I did go to my Apple Sore and traipsed up to the Genius Bar with my 24" iMac... AFTER I made a reservation online of course. I do have that great little AppleCare Protection card.
The good news is that Brad, my genius, at the Apple Store Genius Bar fixed my problem! My iCal now pops up my alarms which I "hear" clearly and on time! *Problem fixed in 5 minutes. WOWZER!* He also told me the iCal problem wasn't my fault, there were some files he needed to delete in my library and cache folders and that the problem seemed to be just a glitch that shouldn't happen again. He didn't know why the files where there... they just were. Thank you, Geniuses at my Apple Store in the Millenia Mall, Orlando, Florida.
Problem in iCal solved. *So this is my story and I'm sticking to it. ;-)*

  • ICal shuts down after iCal Alarm notification

    Hi,
for months I'm facing the problem with my iCal. After I launch iCal it starts opening, iCal Alarm window appears and then just shuts down iCal.
If I delete the iCal database folders it is OK for a while but only until next Alarm notification appears in my calendar.
I tired deleting and installing iCal again but no success.
Can anybody help me with this matter. Use of iCal is very useful to me. I was thinking to switch over to Entourage, but I got used to Mac applications.
The data included in the iCal is synchronized with iSync and my Nokia E61 (Nova Media Plug In)
    Best regards.

    Hi
Same here, and I've deleted evrything with iCal in it, both in my user profiles; application support and preferences. It still crashes.
    Very annoying.

  • Disable ical alarms temporarily (e. g. for 2 hours) by apple script ?

    Hi,
I'm searching for a way to disable the ical alarm pop-ups temporarily (e. g. for 2 hours).
Is there a way to do that?
    Why?
For people giving presentations with MS PowerPoint or Keynote it might be a problem if during the talk a window pops open - maybe even with private content..
I know that there is the option in the preferences, but once I used it I forgot to re-activate the alarms, so it would be better to define for how long the alarms will be disabled before.
Does anyone know how to do that?
If there's no complete solution, it would at least be interesting to know how to access this option by AppleScript.
    Martin

My iCal is up to date in OSX Lion and the script below is working for me. It doesn't actually take time into account, like beckmart had wanted and I'm not very applescript savvy so I just put it into an automator workflow using the script twice with a "pause" in between.
    tell application "iCal" to activate
tell application "System Events" to tell process "iCal"
click menu item 3 of menu 1 of menu bar item 2 of menu bar 1
click button 3 of tool bar 1 of window 1
click checkbox 1 of window 1
click menu item 10 of menu 1 of menu bar item 3 of menu bar 1
    end tell
    tell application "iCal" to quit

  • ICal alarms for Birthdays

    Greetings,
I have read all the old posts about setting an alarm for birthdays and how this function seems at this point to be lacking. I even downloaded the wonderful little "plug-in" "dates-to-ical" and it works good but creates two different entrys under the date taking more space.
Has Apple made any moves to change this function yet and why can't this simple request be added?
    //Cheers

    Hi Julie,
it works good but creates two different entrys under the date taking more space.
This sounds like you are viewing the built in birthday calendar and the Dates to iCal calendar at the same time. Did you uncheck 'Show Birthdays calendar' in iCal's preferences while running Dates to iCal?
Dan, I agree this should be a built in feature of iCal.
    Best wishes

  • Ical alarms and birthdays...please help

I am trying to get all of my birthdays to use the same alarm settings. I went in and set up one persons birthday alarm setting but cant figure out how to get all of them to send an alarm without going to each and every birthday listing. I have a "calendar" set up called, Birthdays that they are all listed under. Is there an easy way to do this?

So, it sounds like I may have been experiencing the same problem as everyone else (general iCal alarm issues). The location of the preferences file you provided is exactly what I was looking for! I deleted the file, created a test event with an alarm a few mins in the future, and BAM! It worked! For the first time in over... a couple years now (?) I actually saw an iCal alarm.
Possible causes of my error: while i think it may have been upgrades, software bugs, mobileme, etc. it seems one unexplored possibility was when my machine ran out of a charge (batteries) and the date was reset to 1969. I checked the date of the file you mentioned above--crated date was 1969. So, it was cycling through hundreds of alarms since I got my machine (2004).
In short... THANK YOU FOR POSTING THAT LOCATION OF THAT FILE. I hope I am not speaking prematurely and that this issue does not crop up again. If so, at least I have a decent workaround. Cheers.

  • ICal Alarm locks up

Since resetting my pRam, my ical alarm pops up and beachball spins forever. Activity monitor says the Ical helper not responding. It slows the entire computer to a crawl. I have tried removing my related cache folder and preferences, but no luck. Only answer seems to be turning off the alarms feature on preferences for iCal. I think it is because time/date got reset to 1969 with zapping pram, and it is trying to figure out years of alarms. Any ideas?

I had the same problem today. My son helped me solve it. Export your calendars from the file menu. Then, delete your calendars. Delete your iCal cache folder in your library. Delete any iCal files in the Application Support folder in your library and delete the Calendar folder in your library. Quit iCal. I also deleted my iCal preference files. Log out. Log In. Import your calendars that you exported and it should work again. Mine did.

  • How prevent iCal ALARM reminders popping up when not wanted?

Sometimes I don't want to see my alarm box popping up to remind me of things.
Suddenly, & frequently, the pesky iCal Alarm box pops up in the middle of the screen with another preset alarm reminder, insisting on my immediate attention. Like when I'm watching a video on my mac.
Then I've got to get up and move it out of the way, but as soon as I touch it, the video which I've set to full screen shrinks to small & I've got to click it to big again. This is just one of the inconveniences.
Please, how can I set the iCal alarm to give it a rest for a while and save those reminders for later
I've made lots of iCal alarms to remind me of things throughout the day. so these interruptions are a constant problem.
Q#2: Why doesn't my ALARM BOX show active the Yellow Button so I could relegate it to the side Dock? Or even the Green Button, so I could enlarge it when I want to see all my open reminders without scrolling?
Instead, My ical ALARM BOX only has the Red button, which closes it out and loses all those reminders therein until it's their time again.
Oh, dear, I don't think anybody can solve this problem.
    Or
    can
    you?
