ICal alarm to send email or open script

I know I can set iCal alarms to send myself an email. What I'd really like to do is:
1) have an iCal alarm that prompted a script
2) that would create an email message where I can fill out a template
3) to send to a pre-addressed recipient to remind them of something that needs to be done.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!

It looks as though the Mac application I was thinking of was AIM, which is still at version 4.7 from 2004 (and still available for download at aim.com). You simply entered a mobile phone number as the buddy and used the application's text messaging.
But I don't know whether it is scriptable.
There are web sites which provide the SMS send feature for free, and Safari is scriptable, but its a bit more of a task to script a web site that may change its display.
Of course, if his mobile has an email address, an email will work (mine is through O2 and has an address).

  • Is there a way to send email without opening Mail.app?

    Hello,
I would like to be able to send email using either an Applescript or a shell script that would send email without opening Mail.app. The ideal solution would be using an account and settings (such SSL encryption of my password) that are stored in mail.app. However, if that is not possible, I could set up another email account to be used just for the purpose I have in mind so I don't have to worry about my password being exposed in clear text.
I've seen Applescripts that open Mail.app and then hide it in the background but the key requirement for my particular need is that Mail.app never open during the send process. I synchronize my email between my iMac and my Powerbook using Chronosync so it is critical that none of the files that store or index the actual mail in Mail.app be opened so as not to alter their modification dates.
    Thank you,
    James

If you upgrade to 10.4 there is a widget that will let you compose and send mail without opening Mail.
    Here's two other options.
    1. Does your isp have a web based email?
    2. Download a program like thunderbird for email. When you configure it end phony information for incoming mail and only fill in the correct infor for outgoing mail.

  • Why cant I send emails, or open folders, from my Outlook email when using ipad. My Outlook is functioning normally when accessed from laptop.

Why am I unable to send emails or open folders from my Outlook email when using my iPad?  My Outlook is functioning normally when accessed from my laptop.  This problem has been going on for three days now - everything was functioning normally before. I have looked at the standard troubleshooting suggestions provided by Apple, but they do not appear to cover this eventuality.  I should be most grateful for any help.

  • Send email without opening mail app

    Hi
So how can I send email without opening mail app.
From: Overview of requested additional functionality, Ayuba Audu
    Hi Peter,
There are a couple of services available that support sending emails via REST API calls. Of course, each such service requires a WADL connector to be created, but by taking advantage of resources such as the early alpha of our
    WADL Generator, along with
our documentation, one will be enabled to do this.
This way you do not need to have the Mail application available, on the machine the app is running on.
    Thanks.
    Hi Ayuba
I guess the comment above was mentioned for this thread. If so can you please share a simple example file here or anywhere elese?
    Thanks

Basically all I'm trying to do is to build an app for multiple users in one company. Each employer (user) is stored in collection with their password and email address. To get access to man screen of the app, employee must login in login screen. Chose his
name and type the password. I want to add a button for forgotten password so in case one of the employee would forget his password he can click on the button and receive on his email his password. The email what he will get would be for example from
[email protected] with mail body : your password is 12345.
So is that what you meant I can do with WADL generator?

  • Ical won't send via Mail opens Entourage instead

I am trying to send out an ical invite. When I hit send my Entourage opens up automatically to try and send it. I switched over to Mail a while ago and have been getting all my emails there and have turned off Entourage. How do I get my ical to send out using Mail?

i just had this problem. the reason why i had this problem was that there wasn't an email address in the address book for the person i was trying to send the invite to. i went into the person's vcard and added their email address and it works fine now.

  • Sending email using bash script

    Hello:
I am working on writing a bash script to notify one or more users by email of certain events. Run from the Terminal command line, and having the script "echo" text of (what would be) a form letter with in-line variable expansion (i.e., ${VARIABLE}), all seems to work as anticipated. Eventually, I want cron to launch this shell script, and send an email to an "on-subnet" user (I have postfix enabled on my Mac, and there are multiple local user accounts).
I found some stuff on the web about sending mail from bash scripts, and so I made a small little test script, that reads like this:
    #!/bin/bash
    VARIABLE[1]="The 12,345 quick brown foxes "
VARIABLE[2]="jumped over the 67,890 lazy dogs."
mail -s "a test email" jv << EOF
    This is a test:
    ${VARIABLE[1]}
    ${VARIABLE[2]}
This is the last line of the test message.
    EOF
    echo "script completed"
It worked... almost... It sent a local email to my postfix mail account that read like this:
    This is a test:
    The 12,345 quick brown foxes
jumped over the 67,890 lazy dogs.
This is the last line of the test message.
    EOF
    echo "script completed"
So, I have two questions. First, the easy one (I hope):
How do I delimit the end of the text, that I want to be the message body of the email, from portions of the script that follow said email text?
Next question is a little more involved. You know how, in Mail.app, if you go to Mail Preferences>Accounts>Account Information, you can put multiple email addresses, comma-delimited, in the "Email Address" field? So, if a person entered "[email protected], [email protected], [email protected]" in this field, then, even though (s)he may be at home, and using their home ISP's mail server, (s)he could send an email apparently from either their home, work, or school email address. Of course, the mail headers clearly would show it came from and through their home machine and home ISP, but it would be displayed in the recipient's Mail client viewer as having come from one of [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected].
I'd like to do something similar here, whereby the email (that is being sent to one or more local users' postfix account on my computer) would apparently be sent from "watchdog@localhost" rather than from "jv@localhost" like it seems to do by default. Whatever account the script is run from (or presumbably, whose cron tab is launching the script) is what the "From" address is set to.
I'd rather not create an additional mail account, because I am using Mac OS X built-in accounts for the postfix mailboxes (I don't want to have to maintain a plaintext username:password file in postfix, and I don't want to create an additional user account on the computer).
So, is there a way to specify an alternate "From" username when invoking the mail -s ${SUBJECT} ${RECIPIENT} command in a bash script? Or is there a different, alternate mail command that will let me do so? (please include a description of syntax and how I'd package the above message text for the alternate method).
    Thanks in advance, all!

    Hi j.v.,
The > after EOF is just a typo (or may be added by the Discussion ?) and you must delete it; other > are prompts from the interactive shell. Andy's post shows an interactive use of shell, not a shell script (note the shell prompt % in front of the commands). A typical use of here document may look like
    command <<ENDOFDATA
    ENDOFDATA
There must be no spaces before and after ENDOFDATA. The word ENDOFDATA can be EOF or any other string which is guaranteed not to appear in the text (the .... in the example above).
You can modify the From: header by using sendmail command (postfix has it as a compatibility interface):
    /usr/sbin/sendmail -t <<EndOfMessage
    Subject: test mail
    To: jv
    From: watchdog
    This is a test:
    ${VARIABLE[1]}
    ${VARIABLE[2]}
This is the last line of the test message.
    EndOfMessage
There must be a blank line between the headers and the mail body.
I assume that you send these mails only to users on your local Mac. Please do not send mails to remote users by using the sendmail command unless you know what you are doing completely.

  • Make send email action open in a different tab or window

Made text a link in a smart shape with Cp7.Due to a shortcoming in the Google Chrome browser the email client doesn't open. So, I click the back button and it goes back to the first slide of the project. I am not looking for a resolution of the Chrome browser issue (but it would be nice to have:), I am wondering if the send email action can open a new tab or window to avoid the back-arrow-to-first-slide issue.
    thanks.
    Michael

When you say: "Click the Back button", I'm assuming you're referring to the Back button in the browser, not a button in your Captivate slide, correct?
If so, this will happen in all browsers when playing Captivate SWFs.  Clicking the browser back button essentially reloads the page, not just the slide.

  • Launchd won't send email via shell script

I'm trying to send an email via shell script. e.g. my shell script is something like this:
    #!/bin/sh
echo testing | mail -s 'this is a test' [email protected]
My launchdaemon runs the script: /usr/local/scripts/testscript.sh
I know the script is working, because I added some debugging (I added a line: echo is this working and sure enough, "is this working" is showing up in the console) but the email part kicks off an error message about 30 seconds later: Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID ### PPID 1 sendmail
The script works when I run it with a cron job. But why wouldn't it work as a launchd item? And why is it I'm only having problems with the email segment of my scripts? I've tried other scripts and they all seem to work fine.

There are no errors reported. I'm looking in /var/log/mail.log.

  • ICal will not send email of event

When I create an event in iCal, and I add invitees, iCal will not send an email to the specified people. This only happened after I updated to Mountain Lion. Starting to get frustrating.

    Greetings w0lverin3,
It seems you are not receiving alerts while using the Calendar app on your Mac.  The following article provides some steps that may help you find a resolution:
Calendar (Yosemite): If you’re not receiving alerts
If you’re not receiving Calendar alerts
If you set an alert to occur before a Calendar event but aren’t receiving the alert in Notification Center, there are several possible solutions.
Make sure alerts aren’t turned off in Calendar preferences. Choose Calendar > Preferences, click Alerts, then deselect “Turn off shared calendar messages in Notification Center” and “Turn off invitation messages in Notification Center.”
Make sure alerts aren’t turned off in Notifications preferences. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Notifications, click Calendar, then make sure None isn’t selected as the alert style.
Make sure Do Not Disturb isn’t turned on in Notification preferences. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Notifications, click Do Not Disturb, then make sure Do Not Disturb is not set to turn on when you want to receive alerts.
Make sure you set up the alert properly. See Set event alerts and receive notifications.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • Webserver on DMZ cannot send email via php script using SMTP (cisco firewall pix 515e)

    Hello,
I have two web servers that are sitting in a DMZ behind a Cisco Firewall PIX 515e. The webservers appear to be configured correctly as our website and FTP website are up. On two of our main website, we have two contact forms that use a simple html for to call a php script that uses smtp as its mailing protocol. Since, I am not the network administrator, I don't quite understand how to  read the current configurations on the firewall, but I suspect that port 25 is blocked, which prevents the script from actually working or sending out emails.  What I've done to narrow the problem done is the following: I used a wamp server to test our scripts with our smtp servers settings, was able to successfully send an email out to both my gmail and work place accounts. Currently, we have backupexec loaded on both of these servers, and when I try to send out an alert I never receive it. I think because port 25 is closed on both of those servers.  I will be posting our configuration. if anyone can take a look and perhaps explain to me how I can change our webservers to communicate and successfully deliver mail via that script, I would gladly appreciate it. our IP range is 172.x.x.x, but it looks like our webservers are using 192.x.x.x with NAT in place. Please someone help.
    Thanks,
    Jeff Mateo

    Amit,
I applaud your creativity in seeking to solve your problem, however, this sounds like a real mess in the making. There are two things I don't like about your approach. One, cron -> calling Java -> calling PHP -> accessing database, it's just too many layers, in my opinion, where things can go wrong. Two it seems to me that you are exposing data one your website (with the PHP) that you may not want expose and this is an important consideration when you are dealing with emails and privacy and so on.
I think the path of least resistance would be to get a new user account added to the MySQL database that you can access remotely with your Java program. This account can be locked down for read only access and be locked down to the specific IP or IP range that your Java program will be connecting from.
Again I applaud your creativity but truly this seems like a hack because of the complexity and security concerns you are introducing and I think is a path to the land of trouble. Hopefully you will be able to get a remote account set up.

  • Sending email using apple script...

I have created a watch folder using apple script that when a file is dropped on it, it automatically opens, formats, and sends out a custom email.
What I don't understand is, how can I include multiple variables in the "content" section (also known as the body section of the email)? I want to put custom type in the content section that says "There is a file awaiting your review." I also would like to choose an email signature from my mail program to use. Third, I would like to include the name of the file that is being sent....
I found that by doing {content:iteminfo} I could get the file name...If I do {content:"There is a file awaiting your review."} I could get the custom type I wanted....
BUT, I can't figure out how to get BOTH of them together in ADDITION to adding a custom email signature...
I know there are some really smart people out there...Any tips?

I can't figure out how to get BOTH of them together
This is just standard AppleScript text concatenation with the &:
    ... {content: "There is a file awaiting your review: " & iteminfo}
Here you can see I'm concatenating a literal string (enclosed in quotes) and a variable. You can extend this ad infinitum.
    As for the signature:
tell theMessage to set message signature to signature "My Sig"
(which assumes you have a signature named 'My Sig'. Adjust as necessary.

  • Ical will not send email

ical will not create alerts or send me an email. Even though my email is added to the account. And no alerts were created on my computer as well. Any suggestions?

    Best,
    Bobby_D

    Hi How Yee,
Which version of UCCX/IPIVR you are using and what is the type of license? Because this feature is only supported with Premium License. Please check the UCCX data sheet from the below link.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/voicesw/custcosw/ps5693/ps1846/data_sheet_c78-629807.html
You will get the information under "Integrated IVR Features with Server Software" of table:4.

  • Cannot send email to Smart Group from Address Book

I created several Smart Groups in Address Book but I can't use any of them to send email. When I right-click the group name and choose Send Email, it opens my default email program (Thunderbird) and puts only the name of the Smart Group into the To: field, not the actual addresses.
If I try to actually send the message, I get the error that (name of group) "is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the email."
What am I doing wrong? How can I get it to paste the actual addresses and not just the name of the group? I looked at the Edit Distribution List window and all the addresses are there.
    I'm using OS X 10.5.7, Address Book 4.1.2 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.22.
    Thanks in advance.

What is the exact message you get when sending fails -- does it say there are one or more invalid addresses, or what?
Having a name in the list without email address or possibly one separated by comma between last and first might result similarly in an invalid address, and Mail will likely refuse to send to any. But if the message is from the SMTP, that might depend on the provider's policies for that.
    Ernie
