ICal became unexpectedly "Read-Only"

iCal unexpectedly became "Read-Only". This is on my main computer that I do all my work, which gets synced through .Mac with home back-up.
What the heck happened, and more importantly, how do I fix it?
(I have already tried restarting and repairing permissions, to no avail)

Hi,
If you haven't already, it might be worth trying deleting the preferences.
Close iCal and go to your user Library/Preferences and delete these files:
com.apple.iCal.alarmsCache.plist
com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist
com.apple.iCal.helper.plist
com.apple.iCal.plist
Best wishes

  • Is ical "sharing" always read-only?

I assist an MIT professor who uses the ical software, and I use Windows XP. I need the ability to edit his calendar by "suggesting" a meeting that he can either accept or reject and that is clearly "from" me. Is this possible? If it is, how does the software deal with issues of synchronizing--i.e., if I suggest a mtng on a calendar that hasn't yet been synced up with his Palm that day, will his calendar automatically catch new conflicts when it is synced?
I read the thread posted about users sharing a synced calendar, and it doesn't sound promising. Any new ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Isadora

The answer to your basic question is that an iCal that is published by its originator is always read only to those viewing it - either on the web or as a subscription in iCal.
If you use Outlook, you could try making your suggestions in the form of meeting requests (perhaps in a dedicated calendar on your 'side'?)
There's an explanation about what happens at the iCal end here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iCal/2.0/en/wr41.html
I can't be much more precise because I don't have the Windows equipment to verify how well this works.

  • A mounted drive became as read-only file system.

I have a 3 TB partition on a 4 TB LaCie drive connected via Firewire 800.  Up until a week ago, the partition was dedicated to TimeMachine.  Since only 682GB of the 3 TB was used, the other day, I copied three directories of 500 mb, 25 gb and 45 gb to this partition using CarbonCopyCloner.  Now several things have happened.
    1.  Time Machine reports the drive is read-only and fails.
    2.  Get Info for the partition and the four directories (fourth on is the sparse bundle ceatec by Time Machine) are reported as read only
    3.  I am unable to delete the directories I copied or any files in them.
Anyone know what went wrong and how to correct it.
I should mention that the partition is formatted as Mac OS Extended and the Drive is partitioned as GUID Partition Table.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

You mustn't copy files to a Time Machine disk. Open Disk Utility, select it and repair the disk

  • How do i shut off the read-only mode in iCal?

I don't what happened but suddenly I cannot add any new entries to my iCal. I get a error prompt that says, "READ-ONLY CALENDAR - You cannot change events or To Do in a read-only calendar." How do I disable this read-only feature so I can use my iCal again. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hyun, I suspect you just need to select another calendar in the panel on the left (eg Home). Subscribed to, and iCal Birthday calendars are read-only.

  • Automator plug-in added to read-only calendar in iCal

I was trying the 'Tiger Tip of the Week' about creating an Automator workflow saved as an iCal Alarm plug-in. Unfortunately, it added it to the 'Holidays' calendar, which is read-only. I found where the plug-in was saved in my library and deleted it, but the 'Boston Globe' event was still on my calendar. Luckily, I was able to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to the US Holidays shared calendar and make it disappear, but what did I do wrong? I didn't have any options available when saving as a plug-in.

One way I've gotten around some weird problems like this in the past is to export my calendars to the Desktop, and then re-import them back into iCal. I'm not sure if this will work for you, however. You also might try backing up and restoring via File->Back up iCal... . Hope that helps.
Edit: if the problem is related to a calendar you've published, Apple offers these suggestions (from iCal Help):
    ■ If you want to change events on a calendar that you published on the Internet, but you’ve deleted the calendar from your Calendars list, you need to re-create the calendar with all its events, give it the same name as the published calendar, and then publish the new calendar. The new calendar will replace the previously published one.
    ■ If you can’t change an event for which you are the organizer, or you can’t change the attendee settings for an event you’ve been invited to, make sure all your email addresses are listed on your Address Book card (the card marked “me”).

  • SL Read Only Group Calendars in iCal?

We've been using the wiki-based group calendars for a bit with SSL and/or Kerberos AD logins. Now I have a request that:
    *Only some people can read.
    *Only some people can read/write.
    *Using AD credentials (Win2k8)
    *All via iCal on 10.5
I found how to set users/groups to Read Only in the Wiki interface, but when that happens, it never takes the login credentials. When used as an account(http://servername:8008/principals/wikis/groupname/), it won't take. When used via Subscribe to Calendar (webcal://servername:8008/calendars/_uids_/wiki-groupname/calendar) it won't take. (The subscribe info comes from the wiki interface "i" box.)
    What am I missing here?

No, at the time I am writing this the topic is not answered. Simply applying the 10.5.6 combo update did not work for me when I had this problem.
This did NOT work either - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1906?viewlocale=en_US.
    This is what worked:
    0) make sure both iCal and Mail are closed, and it might not be a bad idea to temporarily shut off any syncing software you may have active
    1) start with the calendar folders from Tiger that are located in Users/{yourusername}/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources, the ones with crazy names like "2E28E612-467E-4981-975E-D07A31AC39C4.calendar" which contain files" called "corestorage.ics," "Index," and "info.plist"; if "all" you have is an iCal backup library (.icbu file), then you can go to a Tiger machine, restore to that iCal, and then take the above calendar folders from it
    2) copy the calendar folders to the desktop of your Leopard machine
    3) read this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1196389&tstart=0) down to the posts by Thierry Girard
    4) do what he says with the text editor, but you can use TextEdit, and look for either the SEQUENCE:-1 or the PRIORITY:-1. Set either one to just 1 (remove the negative sign); I had some value related to a MICROSOFT this or that, and I did not change it at all.
    5) take the edited calendar folders from your desktop and move them into /Users/{yourusername}/Library/Calendars
    6) start up iCal; at this point, I was in business
    I hope this is helpful.

  • ICal changed itself to Read-Only

This has happened several times now. My iCal calendar that I work in every day to plan my appointmants, to do list, etc. suddenly in the middle of adding an appointment tells me that I cannot add anything because it is a Read-Only calendar. It will no longer allow me to add apoointments, events, to do items, or anything else.
I checked my prefernces and found nothing changed. I restarted and shut down and restarted.
The last time I got an update, the problem disappeared until today.
Anyone have an idea what is going on?

You have one or more read-only calendars in the left sidebar—generally, these are subscribed calendars—and one or more of them is selected. More than one of your calendars in this list is enabled, and you're seeing many events from separate calendars in a single view.
Remember that visually, all of these calendar views are layered. The one selected in the sidebar should be the one you want to enter data into. If a read-only is selected, the disallow message will appear.

  • ICal Read Only

I've spent quite some time looking through the discussions but can't find what i need.
I am a new Mac user. I just purchased the Tiger version & have only had it for 2 days. After setting up the essentials, I went to try iCal today but discovered that it is a read only file. (I've looked at Ownership & Permission in iCal Info).
I didn't subscribe to any sort of calendar (which seems to be a suggestion that arises repeatedly). This came with my machine & i really don't see much point in having it on there at all if i can't use it!!
Any suggestions? There's bound to be some way to fix this . . . and i sure would like to know how.
P.S.: Other than this "little" glitch, I love my iMac & am glad I switched!

Have you tried to create a new calendar? If so, are you able to read and write to new new one?
You mentioned that you checked the permissions for the calendar file. How did you do this, and what did you see?
The reason I ask is that you mentioned that you are a new Mac user, and permissions are handled a little differently than in Windows. The calendar files are located in the iCal folder inside Application Support in your user library. (home folder > Library > Application Support > iCal). The folder names inside the iCal directory won't make much sense, but if you only have one calendar, it should be pretty easy to find.
Make sure that the calendar's folder and all of the files inside of that folder are read & write for your user account.

  • Tried to backup iCal now it's a READ-ONLY calendar! Help!!!

I tried to backup my calendar before I attempt to install the Missing Sync to link my iCal to my Blackberry..I ended up getting a calendar with Most of my entries duplicated and now my calendar says its "read-only" so I can't modify it..I TOTALLY depend on my calendar for my livelihood and can't afford to lose my calendar data for the last 3 years....Can I undo what I've done?????? Thank you! Trishann

    Trishann,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I tried to backup my calendar before I attempt to install the Missing Sync to link my iCal to my Blackberry..Can I undo what I've done??????
How did you backup your calendar, i.e. what do you have for an iCal backup.
How many calendars do you have?
    Are any of them subscribed/birthdays?
iCal Help Topic "If you can't change an event or calendar" says:
If you can’t change an event or calendar, check the following:
If it’s a calendar to which you’ve subscribed, you can change the calendar name but you can’t change its events or to-do items.
If you were invited to an event, you can change only your status for the event, the calendar where the event appears, and the event alarm.
You can’t change or delete events on the Birthdays calendar. (To show the Birthdays calendar, select “Show Birthdays calendar” in iCal preferences.) To change the birthdays that appear, open Address Book (in your Applications folder) and make your changes there. For more information, in Address Book choose Help > Address Book Help.
    Open Address Book
If you can’t change a single event’s time zone or the iCal time zone, time zone support may be turned off. Choose iCal > Preferences, click Advanced, and then make sure the “Turn on time zone support” checkbox is selected.
If you want to change events on a calendar that you published on the Internet, but you’ve deleted the calendar from your Calendars list, you need to re-create the calendar with all its events, give it the same name as the published calendar, and then publish the new calendar. The new calendar will replace the previously published one.
If you can’t change an event for which you are the organizer, or you can’t change the attendee settings for an event you’ve been invited to, make sure all your email addresses are listed on your Address Book card (the card marked “me”).
If you do not get any answers here, I would recommend that you contact Missing Sync Support Center for help.

  • Set Mobile me read only ical

I would like others to be able to log into my ical through mobile me as read-only and not have any access at all to the other applications such as contacts idisk, email, etc.
Is there as way to set MobileMe for this type of usage?

    < Edited by Host >

you can do that by calling class method CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_SET_ATTRIBUTES exporting parameter READONLY
note: this will work only in the foreground, it is not possible to do it in a background job

  • Table became read-only

I have an Access interface to an Oracle 10g database so that our analyst can enter data in from spreadsheets. Recently, one of the tables that she's working with became read-only when she deleted the existing table in Access, and re-imported it from Oracle. She's done the same to other tables, and is still able to write to them. I went in and checked her rights in the OEM, and she has the same rights across all objects. I'm trying to log in under her userid in SQL*Plus, but when I try querying from any of the user tables that she uses, its telling me that the tables/views don't exist. But if I select table_name from all_tables, it does show the system tables and other tables as well - just none of the user tables. Is there anything else I can try to figure out what's going on here?

Access will only allow read-only on Oracle tables unless the primary key is identified in Access. 'Edit' the table and identify the primary key.

  • ICal is Read Only

    Hi,
My Birthday iCal has somehow become "Read Only". How this happened, I have no idea.
Short of deleting it and starting again, has anyone had this problem before and found a solution"?
    Many thanks
    Cheers
    Roger

    Hi Austin,
Thank you for the response. Actually, I did not have any entries in the calendar. I was trying to create a birthday reminder but could not change it from the "Read Only" mode. Finally, in frustration, I deleted the calendar and created a new one. This one was OK.
Again, my sincere thanks for your help.
    Cheers

  • Hard Drive / Volume (DroboPro) has suddenly became read only!? I think its due to a permission issue and i cannot correct it

Bit concerned, my iMac seemed to crash yesterday... when i restarted the iMac .. i got the following message:
OS X can’t repair the disk “DroboPro.”
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can
At the time the iMac crashed, i was downloading some files over the web... and at the same time importing a movie into iTunes. I believe it was iTunes that possibly crashed first... it seemed to be taking longer than normal to import a movie into iTunes, but left it running and went and ate dinner. when i returned, i couldn't wake the machine from the screen saver. it appeared to have locked up. I had no choice but to hard-reset the imac. when it rebooted, the external drive (drobopro) was in read only mode - i can read from it but can't write to it.
I have been initially trying to trouble shoot this as a DroboPro issue - but that drive seems fine. most of the reading i have done points to a permissions issue which is something in OS X that needs fixing.
I found these support articles on the drobo website
    1) http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/det...d-only-and
    2) http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/det...ld-i-do%3F
Per the first article, I tried using drobo dashboard app to shut down the drobopro, then restart my imac and then bring the drobopro back up again to clear the permissions issue. that didn't work. (I actually tried that twice)
When I go into disk utility on the imac, and click on the drobo disk... i cannot click on the repair permissions button, its greyed out. i can click on verify disk... when i readthe details that come up.. in red it says Invalid Node structure, The Volume DroboPro could not be verified completely, the File system check exit code is 8; Error: The disk needs to be repaired, click Repair disk.
i checked the tools in drobo dashboard and according to drobo dashboard the disk is healthy. its about 50% utilised; so definitely no space issues. i have 4 x 2TB disks in it and setup i a high redundancy mode so actual available space is about 5.4TB, and there is 2.62 TB available.
I then looked back at the first article again - and it says to get cocktail disk utility. i got that and went to PILOT tab as suggested, but the only option is to repair permissions on Mackintosh HD.  so i went ahead and repaired the permissions on Mackintosh HD, but that hasn't fixed the issue either. The last options seems to be to do a super user move via the Apple Terminal, which i am a little apprehensive about doing - so  i have avoided that.
Drobo support suggested i try DiskWarrier - i have downloaded that app and tried to repair permissions using that. again i can only run that on the imac disc, but that doesn't work either!?
I am stuck now, what shall i try? look forward to see if anyone can help.

Ok, so I have to apologise for that fact that a minute after making this post I managed to fix the problem...
Blew the dirt from the connector port. Really...? You ask...
This sure did fix my problem and after doing some more hard searching through the forums here looks like it fixed others too.
Dirt in the connector port meant the iPhone thought (for some reason) it was connected to a dock or such, thus removing the controls.
Anyway, cheers and hope this might help someone else.

  • TM drive became read-only, only to be fixed by Verify Disk ?!?!

Could one of you experts out there please explain this to me. My small brain can't wrap my mind around what happened -
Yesterday I had to restore my system from a TM backup. After this, I decided to erase the TM drive and start backing up fresh. I did this, and for the past 5 hours, Time Machine has been happily backing up to this newly-erased partition.
However, just a few minutes ago, I got an error message from TM. It said that the backup couldn't be completed because the volume was "read only". I couldn't believe this, so I checked out Get Info, and indeed it said that I only had read access to the volume that Time machine's been writing to for the past 5 hours! I found the KB article HT3275 that said to do a Repair on the TM drive. But Repair Disk was grayed out; only Verify Disk was lit.
I checked around further, and couldn't come up with what caused this change in permissions, so I decided to do the Verify Disk just to see if there were any HD errors, but the partition came up clean. But then I couldn't believe my eyes - the Repair Disk button was now active! I switched back to Finder and did a Get Info on the TM partition, and it was back to allowing me Read/Write access!
How could a Verify Disk operation cause the permissions to change from Read Only to Read/Write? The only system operation I did during those 5 hours of good TM backups was to change my Computer Name and uncheck "Use dynamic global hostname".
Please, one of you Time Machine/OS X/UNIX gurus explain to this feeble mind what occurred here. I really need to know so that this won't happen again.
    Thanks.

I have a seagate external hard drive formated to ntfs. I have been using it successfully with arch until recently. Now when I try to add files to it it refuses. I tried changing the permission back with
    sudo chmod ugo+rwx -R /media/FreeAgent\ Drive
But, it returned a "Read-Only file system" error for every file. I'm not sure what caused this, any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help.
