ICal Bug: Disappearing Meetings

I am posting in the hope that someone else can validate and help me solve a problem I have been having sporadically with iCal. I have done other searches and see that people have complete vanishing calendars but this seems to be a more subtle form of the same issue.
Problem: Meetings will vanish or disappear from my Calendar.
Factors: I have two macs, synced through .mac. My home computer and my laptop. Both running 10.3.4. Both running the current versions of iCal and iSync. I generally have iCal running on both computers at the same time, but I only update one at a time (since I only use my laptop at work and my desktop at home)
I haven't been able to reliably reproduce it which is the frustrating part.
It seems that between closing iCal and restarting, it will loose meetings / meeting information(for example, it will show "New Event" but be missing the name and location information), which makes me think that there might be problem relating to sync -- that something from one computer is overwriting the new one with "no meeting" so it is getting erased. It shouldn't work that way, but I cannot explain it any other ways.
It has happened enough that I now have to go in and check repeatedly to see whether a meeting is still there. It is very frustrating as the missing meetings have made me miss calls or appointments.
I have checked to make sure I haven't accidentally put it on a different day / time (I am 99% sure it is not user error)
Details:
Mac OS 10.3.4
iCal: 1.5.2
iSync: 1.4
The meetings are only with myself - I don't usually invite other attendees.

A similar thing happened to me recently. An entire calendar ("home") completely vanished, not just a few entries. I had recently added some birthdays to the calendar and the next time I opened up the program. Poof, all gone. I'm going to have to avoid the program until this problem is fixed. I can't have important information across an ENTIRE category vanish like this. It could be devastating if too much info months in advance gets put in there.
I don't synch it up with anything, so I don't think that's what caused the problem. I did enter each birthday address with an "eternal" setting. I wonder if this is what corrupted it so badly? Too many birthdays times infinity?

  • Some iCal events disappear when in week view

    Hello all,
I recently had a double agenda booking. Today I found out why:
In week view some iCal events disappear... When i switch to month view, they reappear.
So, depending on the view i have open time slots. Not very reliable.
Anyone know what i can do to return to solid bookings again?
    Best regards
    Fred

Same problem here. I just imported everything from my old MacBook to my new one using Time Machine. My events appear in the Month view but not in the Week or Day views. So I went back to my old MacBook, created an iCal backup file, and emailed it to myself. Opened it on the new machine, restored from the backup file, and . . . same thing!
Very strange!! I need my daily events to be visible. Any help out there?

  • ICal unexpectedly disappeared

My iCal unexpectedly disappeared and when I tried re-installing iCal, I got an error message of "iCal cannot be installed on this computer."
I have not problems before too with various programs such as Virex and even installing Tiger.
I was told by apple service centre in Hong Kong that the Hard Disk meant be corrupted and I think they erased my hard disk before installing tiger again.
and now the same problem resurfaced but with iCal.
    Please Advice!

Lorenzo, your not alone. I too have the same problem and have been reading these threads in an attempt to find a solution. So far no luck. I too have had problems since installing Tiger but iCal was stable at first. I have recently installed Virex 7.7 due to the problems the earlier version had with Tiger. As a last resort, I will uninstall Virex again. The only other strange behaviour that I have not been able to remedy since Tiger is the Calculator can only be quit from the dock. I don't think the two are associated but it would be interesting to know if your having this problem too.
    Jim.

  • ICal app disappeared?

I've been using iCal for a couple of years. Yesterday - in completely normal usage - my iCal application disappeared. Or rather then iCal app icon now looks like sheet of paper with pen, pencil and ruler forming a letter A.
I currently cannot access any calendar information.
Guidance on how to restore my iCal application - and my calendar data - most welcomed.

Topic closed. Copied iCal application from another mac. Solved problem.

Why does the first iCal notification disappear as soon as I open the Apple cover? It disappears so quickly that I cannot read it!

Right now (and for quite some time!) the community pages are a real PITA.  Trying to link the two did not bring the nice behavior of the Forums to the Community, but rather brought that stench over here!

  • Ical events disappearing on OSX Lion

I actually have three issues, and these appear to be quite common issues with OSX Lion users:
    1. When I receive email calendar invitations (attachments come in as .ics) I can open the .ics file, accept the event and it goes into iCal for about 5 seconds, then disappears. This only happens on invitations that are sent to me. Events I creat are stable, no issues.
    2. The time zone is way off. The events are most frequently coming from an outlook server in my same timezone but the times are usually about 7 to 8 hours later in iCal than stated in the .ics attachment. If I send an acceptance, the time that goes back to the inviter is the incorrect (7 to 8 hours later) time and it causes confusion.
What's worse is once the iCal invite disappears and I go back to their email invite to re-populate iCal with the invite, it queues up another "Accept / Maybe / Decline" response. Time is still incorrect.
Any thoughts on how to fix these issues for good?
I am using gmail as my main calendar so it syncs with my phone calendar. I am not using MobileMe. I have an iPad 2 and have the same issues with the iPad OS.

  • My Ical events disappeared how do I restore with time machine/mountain lion?

I recently installed mountain lion.    Today my ICal events disappeared and I can't restore them with time machine.   What happened?   How do I fix it?

Did you try rebuilding the library's database file as follows:  make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphone ical icon disappeared from screen-how to get it back?

My ical icon disappeared from my main screen on my 4G iphone. I can still access the calendar by using spotlight so I know it's on the phone but how can I replace icon?

Stock apps can't be deleted, so either its been moved to another page or placed in a folder. If you're positive you've looked on every page & in every folder and still can't see it, do this: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout. See if you see it now.

  • Ical bug: updates to outlook events with iCloud sync do not work

I have a bug that needs to be submitted to Apple Developers. I am not sure that this is the correct forum, but here goes.
I have a calendar that syncs from my Mac to iCloud. If I get a calendar invite from someone using outlook, everything works fine. I accept the invite and it is added to ical (6) and syncs with the iCloud calendar.
Now if I get an update to the invite - especially a change of time, the local version on my mac updates to the changed event. Up to now everything is fine, but as soon as iCal syncs with iCloud, the iCloud server thinks that I am trying to change an event that someone else is the organiser of. It then disallows the update. This in turn pops an error up on my mac - 'The server responded: “403” to operation CalDAVWriteEntityQueueableOperation'.
I have looked for workarounds/fixes but believe that none exist and that this is a core bug with iCal/iCloud sync and the way it tries to prevent updates to meetings organised by another party.

    Hello vmepani
maybe I can suggest to you a way to circumvent the problem.
Why are you keeping a local Calendar copy under "my Mac"?
I do have my calendar shared through iCloud between my Mac Mountain Lion, the iPhone and the iPad (both alread IOS7) but don't need to keep any local copy of it in neither device. Anyway I'm able to see the calendar on each device even if I'm offline.
That's way I never had the problem you mentioned.
Not sure if this would work for you as well.
    cheers
    gg

  • ICal bug subscribing/publishing between Leopard and Tiger?

It seems there is a strange incompatibility between iCal 2.0.5 (Tiger) and iCal 3.0 (Leopard).
I work for a company where 10 employees share their calendars through a private server.
Everyone publishes his/her calendar and is subscribed to all the other calendars within the company. So effectively, everyone sees his own calendar in iCal as read/write and all the other calendars as read- only.
Last week 3 machines were upgraded to Leopard and since then trouble started.
Now, when someone on a Leopard machine creates an event and invites someone who is on a Tiger machine, the Tiger machine can accept the invitation but as soon as it is accepted the event disappears from the Tiger calendar.
As soon as the subscription to the Leopard calendar is removed, the event reappears on the Tiger calendar.
The results are the same when a Tiger user invites a Leopard user on the Tiger machine.
I tried this both with a private server and dotMac.
Does anyone have the same experience and perhaps a solution to it?
Right now the only solution I see is to upgrade all the machines to Leopard.

Although I don't have a solution, I share your pain. I had less problems with iCal even before upgrading to Leopard.
What I can find across forums discussing bugs in iCal for Leopard is that, for the moment, there are a lot of small annoyances regarding alarms, compatibilities and inability to edit items without causing it to crash, amongst other topics.
The frustration level is growing as no sign of help seems to be come from Cupertino until now, the best help is on the forums, by power users themselves.

  • Calendars disappeared- meetings visible by clicking a view-can't add new

Hi All- Any help appreciated! Here are the symptoms:
    1. When I open iCal the calendar is blank- no calendars on the left and no meetings on the day/week/month views
    2. If I click on one of the views all of my meetings show up but the calendars on the left are still gone
    3. I can type an event and pull down one of my calendars but when I hit enter the entry is not visible.
    4. Clicking in the blank space where the calendars are supposed to be has no effect.
The only thing I can point to in terms of a possible cause is installing the latest version of MarkSpace Missing Sync 5.0.2 after which this happened.
Since the only recent backup of my calendar was on my Palm TX, I synced to a different Mac (my iMac G5) and backed up to .Mac. When I try to get my calendar back via DotMac I have the same problems outlined above no matter which computer (G5 Dual or iMac G5) I use.
I even erased the whole disk on my iMac and reinstalled Tiger and apps and after syncing to DotMac my calendar is still messed up. I've also tried throwing out all events and related files bringing iCal back to the default with blank "work" and "personal" calendars like when you first install. After syncing with either DotMac or Palm TX the calendar looks fine until I try to click on a calendar or make an entry and then I'm back to the same problems.
I should note a couple things. First the calendar on my Palm TX seems to work fine on the Palm and I have since uninstalled Missing Sync 5.0.2 and gone back to the previous version I know to be reliable but if I sync the Palm calendar I still have the same problem.
If anyone knows a way to save my calendar I'd be grateful!
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I was on the phone with Apple Support for over 4 hours on this issue with two different techs. The case number is #55863808. It is still wide open with no resolution. I am convinced it is a combination of Apple's published API's for third partiy programs to interact with iCal combined with Mark-Space's implementation of those APII's. Once whatever is being corrupted in your user library gets corrupted, there is NO FIX, at least so far. Hopefully, if others are experiencing this problem, they will report it here. Rest assured Apple is reading this thread.
    We know the following:
    1) If you create a new user account, and log in under the new account and launch iCal, it works fine. So, it's apparently something that gets corrupted in the user library AFTER a Mark-Space Sync.
    2) Doing an archive and re-install of the OS does NOT solve the problem.
    3) iCal continues to work normally "beneath" the problem. For example, you can add a calendar and then go highlight an event and assign it to the new calendar you just created. (Of course, since you can't actually SEE the new calender you can't delete it nor can you re-name it.)
    4) When you delete an event, it does in fact delete it, but the display does not update. You need to change the view (i.e. move forward/backward a day/week/month and then come back and you'll note the your deleted event is no longer being displayed
    5) Likewise, the display doesn't update when you try to restore a calendar or subscribe to a calendar, yet both actions actually work. You'll think the software is locked up becuase the dialog boxes don't go away, but the action has taken place and finished already. The menus don't work, but if you go to the dock, you'll note that the program does NOT indicate that it is not responding and you can simply quit and relaunch.
Let's hope Apple does what they've promised and forwarded the case to a senior levelengineer who has access to the program developers. This is quite clearly a major bug that needs to be acknowledged and addressed by both companies.

  • ICal Alerts Disappear (synching with Google Calendar)

I'm synching three Google Calendars to iCal: two work accounts and a personal account, all running on Google apps. These calendars are all synched to my iPhone as well. I have the default alert setting in iCal set at 10 minutes. The problem is that the alerts don't seem to be synching up to Google calendar.
I noticed that none of my alerts were happening. After being late for a couple meetings as a result of this, I investigated. Here's what I've gathered.
The default alert don't seem to stick.
Additional alerts created in iCal don't stick either.
Alerts created on my iPhone stick and synch up to Google Apps just fine - they show up in the Google Apps web interface as expected. However, these alerts dont' synch down to iCal.
The problem is universal across all three accounts.
Unlike the ongoing "can't delete events via iCal" issue that's well documented (and incredibly still not fixed) there's no mention of an alerts synch issue on the CalDAV known issues page.
I had originally set up the Google accounts to have no default reminders added, so I wouldn't have to deal with the extra email/SMS reminders. I have now added a ten minute reminder to all these accounts as a workaround. Now, when I create events in iCal, the ten minute reminder sticks. I have no real idea how this works, but it's as if when synching, iCal sees that Google Apps has a ten minute reminder as well, and there's no conflict. However, if I change the reminder interval, it just disappears. Also if I add a second reminder, say 40 minutes to remind me to leave to drive somewhere, those simply disappear as well. It seems like the correct behavior would be to pass up whatever reminder is set in iCal to Google Apps - that's not happening.
This is happening in iCal 5.01, running on OS X 10.7.2. Really frustrating - anyone have any ideas on how to fix or further troubleshoot? Thanks!

So I got to researching again today, because the utility of calendars is greatly reduced without functioning reminders.
There's a thread over on Google Groups that started in December about this very issue. There wasn't much helpful info until two days ago when someone posted about types of alerts and support between Google and iCal:
If you set the default reminder in your google calendar preferences, when you add an event in ical, the default reminder shows up.
In google I selected "pop-up" for my default reminder type.
When you look at the type of reminder that is set in ical, if you had selected "pop-up" in google, you'll see ical calls it "message".
I've always preferred to use the "message with sound" option in ical. So I tried changing my default alarm within ical.
The reminder/notification/alarm disappeared when I changed it to "message with sound".
When I added a new reminder that was just a message, it showed up, and didn't instantly dissapear. It also synced with my google calendar as expected.
I can live without the "boink" sound when my alerts pop up on screen, so long as they're popping up and not disappearing. Hope this helps some, at least until it starts working like it used to.
I had looked at the type of messages supported, but assumed that "message with sound" would simpy become "message" which is a "popup" to Google. Seems like that would be a more elegant handling of message incompatibility - "translate" the alert to a similar alert type, instead of just dumping it. Lame.
Anyway - this is good enough. I don't care as much about the sound as simply having reminders again.

  • ICal bug!

Didn't know where to post it so I decided to post it here. Not a major bug, but a bug nevertheless. Maybe someone here wants to check it out on their iCal so I get a sense if it is touching just me or anyone else.
    Follow all steps:
    - open iCal in weekly view.
    - click on a day differen than "today".
    - click on "today" on the upper left side (where "today" is written ).
    - click on the red dot to "close the app" without really closing it.
    - reopen iCal by clicking on the icon.
Now you should have the today button greyed out, no matter which day you choose. The only way to have it back is to close and reopen iCal.
No data loss, nothing... Just a little bug I found in iCal.
I run Mac OSX 10.5.4 on a MacBook Pro 17" no plugins, nothing installed. Software is in italian.
Anyway: others get the same result? (just checked it again to be really sure it is indeed not working, and it's not..)

Has a real solution to this bug been found yet? It has been on going for me and has become annoying. The only way to get the "today" button and the search feature to work, is to quit iCal and start it again.
    Very annoying.

  • ICal content disappeared but shows up on MobileMe and iPhone

    Hi!
I wanted to post a "question" and the "answer" because I've spent a couple of days on forums and testing and trying and restoring and ... well you get the picture. Here were my symptoms:
I have a MobileMe account. (ALL calendar data could be seen)
I have a personal iMac. (NO calendar data could be seen)
I have a work iMac. (NO calendar data could be seen)
I have an iPhone. (ALL calendar data could be seen)
I'm using MobileMe services and syncing all data between all four devices. (not to mention my wife's iphone)
    *THE PROBLEM:*
The problem was that for some unknown reason both of my iCal applications at work and at home suddenly disappeared. No data could be seen in either one. I figured something went wrong with a sync and I would just check my iPhone and MobileMe site to make sure all data was still there. YES all data was there - WHEW! Now, I would just manually sync my data and transfer all data from cloud replacing computer iCal data. No problem. I received no errors, clicked on iCal - nothing. Again-all data on iPhone remained nothing showed up on my work or personal iMacs. Confused, I decided to call up Apple's support for iPhones. I spoke (texted) with Michael M somewhere in Canada (very nice gentleman - did a wonderful job walking me through over an hours worth of ideas) but to no avail. We finally decided that I needed to use my Time Machine backup to get iCal to a "working" condition and upload all data to the cloud replacing everything from that scenario. This also did not work. Something got corrupted somewhere.
    *THE SOLUTION:*
I closed iCal and marched on over to Users/myuser/Library/Calendars/
and moved (didn't delete yet 'cause I was scared) EVERY folder into a "new folder" on my desktop. I then reopened iCal and WALLA - it began syncing immediately. Everything finally showed up. I sure hope this helps someone out there. If you would like a transcript of what me and the iPhone/iCal tech tried - I would be more than happy to forward that info on to you. My e-mail is jdunk(at)mac.com.

    Hey Timothy,
So there is two Contacts icons on the iPhone?
The iPhone 2.0 software adds a Contacts application to the iPhone.
    Try restoring the iPhone.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305744
You can also try downloading the application in iTunes and then syncing it to the iPhone.
