ICal (Calendar.app) - Is My Current-Time Marker Missing? Feature Dropped?

Hello iCalers,
I recently made the switch to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard. I was quite a fan of iCal in Snow Leopard—it was one of the reasons I downgraded to Snow Leopard from Lion—but since I have a newer computer that doesn't allow Snow Leopard, and I've got Mountain Lion set up pretty well for me, I'm sticking with Mountain Lion.
My standard view for things in iCal is "Weekly." In Mountain Lion's incantation, I don't see the red marker that scrolls downwards, the one that corresponded to the current time. I'm wondering: was this feature dropped in Lion/Mountain Lion, or is mine buggy, or is it an out-of-the-way preference somewhere? I peeked in some .plists and com.apple.iCal files—I laugh that Apple still calls it "iCal" at the programming end—but I couldn't see any obvious mention of that time-of-day marker.
Any ideas?
I liked it a lot—enough to open a discussion about it!

Thanks John M,
It indeed worked when I made a new user account, so I trashed and deleted my <user>/Library/Calendars folder, as well as <user>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ical.plist—(backing them up elsewhere beforehand, in case something terrible happened), then re-set-it-up. (Holy cow it's easy to work with iCal after iCloud—literally seconds when it used to be at least a couple of minutes using Google Apps caldav or making an ical backup file and restoring calendars + fixing buggy events). It seems to be all good now.
A few times in my OS X history I've had issues come up where something is busted and I make a new user account that demonstrates that it's not busted universally. I hadn't even thought of doing that this time. Thanks for the idea!
May your days be merry and bright!

• Does anyone besides me find it odd that calendar.app assigns a start time for an all day event?

Does anyone besides me find it odd that calendar.app assigns a start time for an all day event?

Hi SharpBud,
The date for all day event stored in SQL in GMT time, the start time for an all day event returns the start time in GMT time, which is not the current time most likely.
This is a confirmed issue, as a workaround, I would suggest you to use a calculate column for the event for the column, using the following format:
IF(TEXT(([End Time]-[Start Time])-TRUNC(([End Time]-[Start Time]),0),"0.000000000")="0.999305556",IF([Start Time]=ROUND([Start Time],0),[Start Time],DATE(YEAR([Start Time]),MONTH([Start
Time]),DAY([Start Time])+1)),[Start Time])

• Blue TODAY banner on monthly iCal calendar doesn't indicate current date

Why doesn't the blue TODAY banner on monthly iCal calendar on iPad indicate current day? (I.e., today is Wednesday Feb 8 but the blue TODAY banner is still on Tues Feb 7) . I'm syncing to my other devices with iCloud. This problem only happens on the iPad.

Duh... My contrast settings were messed up and I couldn't see that today's date was highlighted.

• Calendar app stuck on another time zone.

I left Nigeria for Kansas, U.S. that's 6 hours behind so I changed the time settings on my phone to KS time zone but the Calendar app on my 3GS doesn't seem to understand that. When I create an event for, say, 8 PM today (to be notified at that time), I get a notification at 2 PM today—6 hours before the intended time. It's like Calendar thinks I'm still in Nigeria. I've been all over Settings and I can't figure it out.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

There is more than one place to change time. If you set the time to local, you need to go into Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar>scroll down to the bottom under calendar and set the time zone support there for the local time zone.

• Why does calendar app icon show current date, but weather app icon does not?

i.e. At time of writing this post, the calendar app icon shows "Sunday 16" but the weather one always always always shows "23 degrees"
Is there a way of fixing this inconsistency in the UI?

I now realise that this has been asked previously, only the 'previously asked?' search didnt' pick it up for me.
Yes I understand the issues about how 'live' it needs to be, but surely you should have the option of picking this? Most people are connected 'all the time' anyway, so so what if there is a tiny bit of weather data flying about?

• Why does my calendar app show me Adelaide time?

When you look at an appointment you have entered on you Calendar, whether on desktop or iPad,there are 3 views: 1) what you see when you open the app which might just be one word 2) a slightly more extended view when you touch or mouse click on it or 3) a detailed view if you click/touch again.
I have no problems with views (1) or (3), but (2) puzzles me and occasionally has me quite worried: it tells me Adelaide time. For example, for today the square reads "Practice" - that's fine. I know what that means. If I tap/click twice it will tell me correctly Practice, Perth Morris Men, 7:00-9:00pm, Nedlands Girl Guide Hall. Wonderful. However, if I only go the intermediate step and only tap/click once, I get "Practice, Wednesday 5 Mar, 9:30-11:30" plus some letters that I interpret as Australian Central daylight saving time when I stop to think, but that is after my initial panic. NOTE: today's example is not a panic job because it's a regular thing so I know the details anyway, but with other dates I can't be sure - who reads ACDT or whatever? Not only that, but the reminders come at the wrong time.
Now, my computer & iPad clocks are correctly set for West Australia and the location is set correctly too as far as I can see. Anyway, my iMac has never left my study, so why do both machines think they're somewhere else? And why only with the calendar app?

I'm not sure what Time Zone Support is. Time Zone is set automatically from the Time Zone page of Date&Time. There is no option for turning it off. It searches out the nearest city - it correctly guessed Perth, seeing I live less than a kilometre from the centre of the city - I don't know what to correct.

• First time user - missing features

Today I tried Muse. Actually not to develop a website but to prototype a website.
First of all, I was impressed how fast and easy it is to build a website prototype with Muse. As a designer Muse will help a great deal to provide better layouts to clients as well as developers.
But I also came across some severe limitations:
1
It is not possible to use all installed open type fonts on the computer.
I see a high potential for designers to use Muse for prototyping.
Designers want to use the corporate fonts of their clients.
There has to be a way to incorporate all fonts installed on the system.
Also it should be possible to render with all fonts installed.
To create an image out of installed fonts should be an extra when publishing a site but it should be possible to use all available fonts. In my particular case the Foundry Form Sans Open Type Fonts did not work!
Also, people use webfonts that are not available at typekit. There are many more foundries.
In addition to my comment above it should be possible to use any webfont.
2
Responsive Design
That's definitely missing
3
Embedding videos
I was shocked that one cannot embed videos.
There should be widgets for that available. Ready to go in Muse.
4
Baseline Grid
Yes, I am an old school Designer. I design Websites in InDesign because I have all control over typography. Therefore Photoshop and Illustrator seemed always weak to me. Muse could change this. First, I would need access to all my fonts and second I want to have a baseline grid!
5
Guides
Like in InDesign I wish there would be to possiblilty to duplicate and insert with an offset! Then I can create quickly additional grids with guides without placing guide by guide...
I really hope someone in charge is going to read this and these suggestions will find their way into the product. I am sure, Muse can also be a wonderful prototyping software.

I'll let someone with more experience respond to the details, but in general, the challenges you're facing aren't so much limitations of Muse, but limitations of web design overall. Websites don't yet have the ability for such detail as in the print world. Take for example your request for a baseline grid. The challenges involved in displaying webpages "accurately" across so many factors, including browser choice, monitor resolution, page size, window resizing, page zooming... not even starting with all the mobile devices out there... but all these factors make such precision nearly impossible at this stage of the game. So, something like baseline grid, may line up easily on YOUR monitor during the design and creation, but there is virtually no way to ensure that the design will look anything like that across all other possible media. (Unless you create something for print, PDF it, and embed THAT on the page.)
Designing for the web is a much different animal. Hopefully ONE day it will be more standardized as print has become over the hundreds of years. Until then, Muse does a pretty darn good job, in my opinion. The fact that they've translated web design terminology into print terminology (line-height vs leading) is a great first step!
That said...
I'd love a step and repeat!! Good suggestion on that one! ;-)
Responsive Design is also in the works, I believe.
You CAN embed videos from youtube and vimeo. There is a widget in the widget library > social for either of those services. If you go to the Adobe Muse Exchange (there is a link on the Library tab inside Muse), there are more video widget options to download and install.
Lastly, regarding fonts, many of the adobe type kit fonts are available, but you should also have access to your own system fonts. Not sure why they wouldn't show up for you? But Muse will render as images any text containers using non-web fonts.
Hope this helps...

• Is anyone else having problems syncing an external calendar app (Easy Calendar) with iCal using iCloud for syncing?

Prior to upgrading to Mavericks, I would use iTunes to sync my two calendar apps--Easy Calendar (from the app store) and the native iCal and of course, I would wind up with the same calendar events on both calendars after syncing. Since upgrading to Mavericks and--per Apple instructions, using iCloud to sync--I can't sync the two calendars. At this point, I'm thoroughly confused about where I can go to find/see a backup of my non-iCal calendar app that's on my iPhone. I'm beginning to think that if I don't use Apple's iCal, I can't back up or sync my calendar events using a non-native app such as Easy Calendar. Is that correct?

I, too, had long waiting times. Here's what worked for me.
As I went through some of my Pages and Numbers documents, I got warnings that there were sync discrepancies (differing versions in iCloud and on my iPads and laptop). So, I removed everything from iCloud Drive using my laptop (saved to local folder). I let my iPads sync so they removed all the iCloud-based documents. On the laptop I went through and forced everything to the latest file format (latest Pages and Numbers on Yosemite) by re-saving, then copied everything back into iCloud Drive. My iPads both updated within seconds and everything now syncs quickly.
Don't know if eliminating sync discrepancies is the solution, but it seems to have worked in my case. Hope it might help others.

• Show TIME on iCal Calendar

is there a way to get my monthly view on Calendar app to show the TIME?
i am printing these out and viewing them on the computer and it is a bit aggravating to have to click on the actual item to find out what time the entry is.
isn't there a way to show this so it is seen /on/ the calendar entry?

• Subscribing to iCal calendars

MacOS X 10.7.2 + iCloud. Apple maintains a list of calendars that you can subscribe to using the iCal calendar app. I've been trying to subscribe to the US Holiday Calendar in iCloud but every time I do that iCloud eventually deletes it. If I use MobileMe, I get two copies of everything in the calendar.
How can I fix this?

Greetings,
This question would probably be best posted in the MobileMe or iPad or iPhone forum as you are not using the iCal application on a Mac.
That said let me take a crack at your question:
__MobileMe does not have an interface to subscribe to published calendars.
__iPhone -- Go to Settings > Mail/Contacts/Calendars/ > Add Account > Other > Add Subscribed Calendar
__iPad -- Same as iPhone give or take. Search for "subscribe" in the iPad manual: http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPad_UserGuide.pdf
Hope that helps.

• IPad calendar app

Is it possible to create multiple calendars in the iCal calendar app on the iPad?

Not direct with the iPad's Calendar application.
The iPad is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer for contacts and calendar events. The contact Groups I've created with the Address Book on my Mac and the different calendars I have with iCal on my Mac are available and kept synchronized with the my iPhone's Contacts and Calendar applications, and the same applies to the iPad.
Long story short, this is done with the supported application on your computer used for syncing contacts and calendar events.

• IOS 5 Calendar app current time bar off after time switch

Here is a issue I have recently noticed. Yesterday we had time fall back one hour. On my Macbook, Iphone 4, and Ipad2, the system time is showing correctly(the time in menu bar on the Mac, and in the top system bar on iOS). On my two Ios5 devices however, in the "Calendar" app, the little bar with the red dot (i refer to as the "current time bar") still shows one hour ahead. So for example the actual time in Los Angeles, CA right now is 3:19 PM but in the calendar app on both Ios devices it shows as 4:19 PM. Keep in mind that the system time is showing 3:19 PM on both of these devices. I logged into the http://www.icloud.com web site and it shows correctly. On my Mac book running MacOSX 10.7.2 everything shows up ok (both system time and iCals current time bar). I am connected to Wi-Fi and 3G. I do have time zone support enabled on all devices, but turning that off did not help anything and I don't see how that could be causing this. What is causing this? Is this a bug in iOS5? Please let me know if you are experiencing the same issue so we can have Apples developers fix this bug. Thanks have a nice afternoon.
The issue:
The "Current time bar" in iOS5 Calendar is showing up one hour ahead after time switch as of yesterday (11/5/2011 Los Angeles, CA)
What I know:
System time on Mac, Iphone and Ipad shows up as the right time
Current time bar in iCal on MacOSX 10.7.2 shows right
Current time bar in Calendar on icloud.com shows right
Common posts:
This post seems to be experiencing the same issue.

I'm having the same issue... the time is right on my phone, however the time-bar is showing DST (one hour ahead). I've restarted the phone... checked my iCloud time zone, etc... even tried turning on/off the Time Zone support not only for the phone but also in the Calendar... nothing.
So in the end, correct time but the time-bar is incorrect. I hope this is just a bug that needs fixing by Apple...

• What is a great calendar app? Currently using iPad standard app but doesn't show times

I am looking for a calendar app that links to outlook exchange on my iPad. I am using the current standard app on the iPad and it doesn't show the times. Any suggestions?

Howdy squeakyred2,
If I understand correctly you are getting the alerts from the events that you are creating on your Calendar app, but they do not show in the app once they are created. It seems to me that the calendar you are adding them to may not be checked, thereby making it hidden. To check this, first open the Calendars app and tap Calendars at the bottom:
Calendar at a glance - iPhone
Then verify the calendars you have showing. It should look similar to this:
Use multiple calendars - iPhone
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
All the very best,
Sterling

• Calendar app and calendar notification not in the same time zone

Hi,
I just update my macbook pro 13' retina to Yosemite.
I sync my calendars account (gmail, icloud and exchange) with the calendars apps to have all my event in the notification bar.
I just see that the event are not at the same hour (see picture)
Today, in Europe we change from the summer to the winter hour,
Is it the reason why ? is it a bug ? Am I the only one ?
Thanks
Thomas

I have a similar issue. Events sent to me from Outlook users or created by me in Outlook 2011 (on my Mac) appear 13 hours later in iCal both on my Mac and on my iPhone.
It seems that iCal in both OS X 10.10 and IOS 8.2 are defaulting inbound events to GMT or UTC time zone despite time zones on both devices being set to my time zone in NZ which is currently GMT/UTC +13.
It would appear that you are in Europe. Is your time zone by chance 1 hour different from GMT/UTC??

• TS4337 How do I stop iCal from automatically converting manually entered times into entries on my hourly calendar?

I use the monthly calendar view in iCal.
I enter an event as such: "lunch with mom @ 3" so I can just look at my monthly calendar at a glance and see what time things are.
In the latest update, it now automatically strips that entry of "@ 3" and converts it to the hourly calendar, which I never use or want to look at, adding a layer of clicking between me and the info I need.
Is there a way to turn that off? Or do I just need to find a new calendar app to use and/or never update any Apple software again for fear of them changing the features I use?

Try lunch with mom at 3 instead
I tried and the text was not stripped and the event was entered at the correct time
