ICal Calendars have disappeared

I opened iCal today to find that all of the information was gone. I looked in Users/~/Library/Calendars and was shocked to see it empty. After some investigation, I figured out that iCal seems to be saving calendars in a new place: Users/~/Library/Application Support/iCal.
So my best guess is that when I downloaded an iCal update, it changed the save directory, deleted the old calendars, but didn't successfully bring them to the new spot. I'd really appreciate any thoughts or comments.
I highly doubt if I can still resurrect them at this point, but I'd like to at least understand what happened and warn people to back up their calendars.

I run this with cron every night. The crontab entry is
1 1 * * * /users/austin/Library/Scripts/CalBack
but you could equally well have iCal run it from a recurring alarmed event - if you weren't worried about iCal loosing its files! The script keeps backups up to MaxBackups days old - adjust the value to suit. If you happen not to notice a problem the first day or two, you restore an older backup!

  • Why are my iCal calendars randomly disappearing with all their corresponding events?

Why are my ical calendars randonly disappearing? I updated to Maverick, but one disappeared before I did that update. I have 10 different calendars, each identified by its own color, example: "work" calendar is yellow, my personal calendar is green. Every month or so, one randomly disappears without my even being in the program or changing anything. Along with the calendar ALL its events are gone as well. None of those events show on my iphone, imac, ipad or macboook pro. They just vanish, along with many appointments I have scheduled, and their directions and info. Im SO FRUSTRATED! Im ready to go back to paper.

Got it fixed cal got set for icloud on my iphone. now I can choose them in itunes.

  • ICal event have disappeared after upgrading to Lion. Please help!

After upgrading to Lion, pre-existed calendar events (Newer ones) have disappeared. How can I recover?

    Greetings Alex,
If you have a backup of your computer from before you upgraded then you can restore the data from your backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
--- Let us know if you have a backup and if so, what type it is and we can tell you how to restore your calendars.
--- If you don't have a backup, consider starting one following the article above ASAP.  Anyone with information they care about on their computer should have a backup.  It is a hard lesson that every computer user learns at least once.
If you do not have a backup from before you upgraded:
    1. Make an iCal backup so you don't lose what you have currently:  Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
    2. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove all files and folders that start with this phrase)
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove all files and folders that start with this phrase.)
---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
---NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion:
    4. Open iCal and see if the events you are looking for magically reappear.
If the events don't appear and you don't have a backup or have the events on another device like an iPhone or iPad then your only other option would be to use data recovery software or a data recovery company to try to get the data back (although it might be easier to just re-create the data as best you can).

You can contact a local Apple Authorized Provider to see if they offer data recovery services: http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
There are many nationwide / worldwide data recovery companies out there.  Here are a few examples:

  • Individual calendars have disappeared

    HI
All of the individual calendars I had set up within iCal (should show in the left panel) have disappeared and when I open iCal all the days are blank....no events or appts. are there! If I click on the 'search results list' button a list of all my appts. comes up. If I double click on one appt. or event for each month then the entire month gets filled in again.....until the next time I close ical and restart. Then it's blank again. So I know my appts. are there but the calendars they were in are gone. I don't have a backup within iCal....tho it is backed up to .Mac/MobilMe. I'm reluctant to sync it again as I'm afraid it will just remove them all from the web site and then I'll have nothing.
Do any of you have any idea how they disappeared or how I can get them all back again since all the events are still "there" someplace and are still color-coded according to the calendar they were in?
I also sync with my Palm LifeDrive via The MissingSync and I sync on my iPod and with MobilMe. I don't know if one of those syncs changed iCal or not but iCal on this main computer is supposed to be the one they all sync to.
Any help getting the calendars back with the info still in them would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi all
I guess I'm having the same problem described by Raven.
When I launch iCal, I get an empty list of activities, no calendars at all, and no events as well.
Here it is a screenshot just to show you what I see:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3295/2828367350_e1c8f2c38c.jpg
If I try to export/import the iCal database, the import/export dialog window just shows up for a second and it disappears immediately.
I tried to delete the "calendar cache" file found in \myself\library\calendars (but not the calendar folders named in a incomprehensible way since I hope to recover all my data!) and when i launch iCal it says "rebuilding cache" but then I get the same empty screen.
I created a test user and I launched iCal so to check if it works and it does, so I still hope that it's possible to correct mine.
In case someone has some tips or suggestions, they're more than welcome!
    Thanks

  • ICal calendar data disappeared taking with it Entourage calendar and Mobile

I installed Snow Leopard on Friday on two Macs which are both registered on Mobile Me. My iPhone is also synched via Mobile Me. Just looking at my calendar in Entourage today(Monday) the events started disappearing. I opened iCal and the calendars were blank. I then went to Mobile Me and the calendar was there for about thirty seconds before it disappeared. Lastly, I booted my MacBook and the iCal calendars were empty as well as my iPhone. I tried to drag Calendar cache to the desktop and restarted iCal, but still empty. I have no archive calendar. The address book is fine and intact. First question - what happened? and Secondly, is there an archive available on Mobile Me that I can retrieve? Is this Snow Leopard related? I live by that calendar, so I need to get it back. Any suggestions?

    Hi Darryl
I'm presuming you don't have Time Machine turned on, so you can't go back to find your previous calendar. If you don't, sadly I can't think of a way of retrieving it.
If you still have your address book my advice is to back that up straight away. (File, Export, Address Book Archive).
This is something that's happened to me before (prior to Snow Leopard). Mine began when I started getting double events in Entourage, when I decided in desperation after playing around with various options to delete the Entourage calendar in iCal, I did something to completely confuse the two systems and I could not get Entourage to re-recognise iCal. I read somewhere other threads that what I had to do was to turn off the synchronisation between Exchange and iCal for several cycles (several days) then reset it to sync again and be patient. I eventually got it back but remain paranoid and regularly take a back up of iCal (File, Export, iCal Archive). I haven't found a way to completely avoid the synching problems that happen from time to time like double events and not always synching. So I just back up regularly, take screenshots of calendars as well, and regularly check, turn synchronisation on and off while making decisions to override either Entourage or iCal when I turn it back on, and occasionally manually correct info. For me the problem is definitely tied up with the link to Entourage - if I turn of that synchronisation with iCal, then MobileMe works flawlessly. But i need the Entourage exchange calendar to be synchronised for work, so have to live with the flaws.

  • Some of my calendars have disappeared

Does anyone know how to restore calendars? All but one of my calendars have just disappeared from my iPad 2. Help!

I am what sounds to be the exact problem.
About a month ago I started to notice that some of my pictures were randomly acting up. The thumbnails still appeared in iPhoto, but when double clicked, an error would occar. I tried reverting to original and that seemed to work, even though I then needed to re edit the once missing pics. But since then, all of my pics have gone "missing" with the thumbnails still appearing. I tried to revert them to the originals again, but that doesn't make a difference any more.
How can I get my pictures back and prevent this from happening again?
On another note, I need to transfer my photos from my PC to my Mac Book Pro. I do not have an external drive or a router to use. I am buying an iPod Video and will be using it to tranfer my iTunes from my PC to Mac. Can I use it to tranfer my pics? I was using Picasa on my PC, how would I transfer them. I will need detailed instructions as my PC keeps screwing up, so I know I am doing it right and if it doesn't work, it's not me.

  • Contacts and Calendar have disappeared from iPhone

All my contacts and calendar entries have totally disappeared from my iPhone on 20.5.09. My free trial of MobileMe was due to end on 20.5.09, so on 17.5.09 I cancelled my subscription (didn't really use it). The only backup of my contacts/calendar was on MobileMe. Is it just a coincidence that my information has disappeared on the same day as my subscription ran out?!
    Message was edited by: KkAaTt

When turning on over the air syncing for Contacts and Calendars with a MobileMe account on an iPhone, all contacts and calendar events on the iPhone are erased first and replaced with your MM online address book and calendar events. After the initial transfer from your MM online address book and calendar(s), contact info and calendar events are kept synchronized between the two.
Your MM online address book and calendar events are designed to be kept synchronized with the supported application or applications on your computer.
When a MM account is cancelled, the data on the MM "cloud" is no longer available.

  • ICal calendars keep disappearing

I maintain identical calendars on both of my computers, keeping them synched via .Mac. Recently all of the calendars disappeared. Events and To Does appeared for the current month, but I was unable to change between months. Soon the whole thing quit working.
I restored one set of calendars from Time Machine and got it working. After adding in the new dates that dropped out in that process, I copied the entire Calendars file (User/Library/Calendars) directly over to the other computer. That worked—for one day. Now all the calendars are missing again from my laptop, and it's right back to where it was.
Also, as part of that process I replaced all the calendar data on .Mac with data from the working calendar, just in case there was contamination from problem stored on .Mac.
What's going on? And is there is a fix?
    Thanks.

    gswank2,
What's going on? And is there is a fix?
I just made this post to another user, but it bears repeating.
    I recommend that you read:
    1. How to reset .Mac Sync
    2. How-To: Truly reset your .Mac sync data
My primary advice is to ensure that you use the backup feature on iCal before you try anything else. If you are using different versions of OS X/iCal the menu commands will be slightly different, but the comfort of having a good backup is "Priceless."

  • Blackberry Z10 will no longer Sync and Sympatico Contacts and calendar have disappeared

Two weeks ago my sympatico email stopped on my blackberry. The email was uninstalled and reinstalled and the contacts and calendar disappeared and the phone stopped synconizing . When the email is loaded on another Z10 the contacts and calendar come in. The issue appears to have happened after an update.Restoring the phone to factory settings did not help. I can get all other emails to load including contacts and email. Does anyone have a solution other than getting rid of this phone.
Sympatico does not appear to be an issue as I can load the email on other blackberry devices and have loaded it on another Z10 with no issue.
I have made called to Blackberry and they keep pushing me back to Bell but based on the tests above it seems to be a Blackberry issue not sure how to resolve and frustrated.

    Two thoughts.
When you did the factory reset the wise thing to have done would be add the email and test before restoring and reinstalling apps. If the problem is corrupt settings or data, you might end up restoring the problem. Testing beforehand gives you an whether or not the stock software install is ok.
If you didn't test with clean device, I would do a security wipe or repeat the reset to factory and test.
If you did test on clean device, then I would do a clean OS install, and test.
In my opinion the issue is software, one way or the other. You may want to go straight to clean OS install.

  • Calendars have disappeared

I have 4created calendars in iCal: Personal, Work, Social & Projects. I opened iCal for the first time in two weeks to discover the calendars exist in the top left corner, but appear to be empty i.e. no entries! The 8 calendars I subscribe to e.g. Apple Store in London, are fine.
I looked in ~/Library/Application Support/iCal which has one folder named 'Themes'. This contains 12 folders (the same number as the entire total of my calendars, 4 are mine, 8 are subscribed) named with a string of numbers, ending in .icaltheme. Each has a resources and contents folder, whose only content is a metadata.plist file.
Has anyone any idea where the contents of my calendars might be? I'm starting to get a bit nervous!
    Regards, Dan

I'm running 10.3.8 Panther and haven't dragged files from anywhere to anywhere!
However on running a 'Find' for .ics files I discovered a 'Calendars' file at ~/Library/Calendar. This contains all 12 calendars. However the four I'm interested in (my ones) all have a size of 4K. Somehow, all four got deleted, (or moved but not by me)
I'm loathe to move anything as I'm confident I have moved nothing in the first place. Oddly I met someone a few days ago who said the same thing happened to him on upgrading to Tiger. This I have not done though. Only updated latest Safari, iTunes, QuickTime and a few security releases in the last month.
Ah well, I am resigned to having lost the data. Why it has occurred I have no idea.
    Regards, Dan

  • Calendar not syncing on iOS 7, now calendars have disappeared.

    Hi all,
Just recently I noticed my Calendar on my iPhone 4 with iOS 7 was not syncing correctly.
My Mac and iCloud.com are correctly in sync.
After following the troubleshooting steps (iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Calendar) I got to the stage where I deleted the calendars on my iPhone as part of the process of turning off my iCloud calendars, and turning them back on. I had backed them up, and they still work on my Mac and iCloud.com.
Now I have no calendars on my iPhone, and can't seem to add any new ones, or get the sync to work. Ive tried all the steps in the troubleshooting.
Has anyone experienced and solved anything similar?
    Thanks!
    Jon

If you haven't already tried, save your photo stream photos to your camera roll on your phone, then delete you iCloud account and sign back in.  To do this, saving your photo stream photos by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tapping the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow), then tapping Save to Camera Roll.  Then go to Settings>iCloud, scroll down and tap Delete Account (which only deletes it from your phone, not from iCloud), choose Delete from My iPhone and provide your password when prompted (your data will still be in iCloud).  Wait a minute or so, then sign back in (your data will download back to your phone).  Then test your calendar syncing again.

  • All my events in my calendar have disappeared after it updated! Please help!

Thunderbird updated and now all my events are gone! I updated lightening, but the events are still missing. I have a blank calendar..
    My Thunderbird is 31.1.1
    My lightening is 3.3.1
    Thank you

We solved it. You know on the left hand its written calendar, and then under its written the name of the person/calendar. Well it was saying that, that specific calendar was momentarily unavailable. we double clicked it and it gave us the option of activating the calendar so we checked marked it. When we clicked ok or save it asked us to connect to our google account. After doing so we checked our calendar on google and found all of our events. Turns out we were lucky that thunderbird was saving the date we entered in gmail as well. We were never able to retrieve them on thunderbird, we had to retype everything. Sorry i am recounting this from memory so i might not be describing this 100% accuratly. I hope this helps you!
