ICal Default Alarm Settings - Change?

I use iCal for most everything, and i would like to change the default settings on the reminders.  Currently, it defaults to ALL DAY, on the current day and no alram...as i prefer to see all my reminders in the morning, i would like to change the default to something more conveninet....any idea's on how to achieve this???

.....And while you are responding to McCaffertee's issue, which I would like to resolve as well, also tell us how to change  the default alert sound from Basso (the most annyoing one) to something else.
Thank you.

  • ICal default alarm

I have iCal preferences set up to automatically create an Alarm 15 minutes prior to the scheduled event. When an event is set up as "all-day", the alarm will go off at 11:45pm the prior day. This makes total sense on why Apple does this and it is pretty obvious that a user can change the alarm start time. However, if my preferences have been set up that my day starts at 8:00am and ends at 5:00 (my work day), wouldn't it make more sense that an event that you create as "all-day" default to an alarm start time of 8:00am (user start time preference) and not at midnight. Why would I want an alarm to go off at 11:45pm when I'm in bed sleeping? It would make more sense for the alarm to go off at 7:45 am (15 minutes prior to my day start preference).
is there a defaults write com.apple.iCal setting that I can change to make this happen?

No response from anyone from Apple on this. I did find that you can tell iCal to set a default alarm +- minutes. So If you set an all day event and want the alarm to go off at 8:00 am, you would go into iCal preferences and set default alarm to go off -480 minutes. That works good for all day events but the thing that stinks is when you go to set up a new event that only lasts from say 4:00pm - 5:00pm, this default setting will set an alarm 8 hours AFTER the time. Not what you really want. So, the answer I'm afraid is to go into each event that you need an alarm set, and change the alarm time manually. I'm hoping this will change in a future update due to the many MS people that don't like this default setting.

  • Ical default alarm time

Every reminder I set in ical pops up with a default time of 11:45 p.m. Every time I have to change it. If it would use a default time of 9 a.m., many times that would work fine for me unless it is a specific meeting. How do I change the default time ical gives me?

The original post by Saluda Judy is almost exactly my question, except my issue -- which I believe is related to if not the same as the ical question -- is the default alarm time for TO DOs. When I create a 'to-do' in imail or directly in ical, and give that to-do a due date, then set an alarm for that to-do, the default time for the alarm is 11:45 pm the day before the due date. I would like to change the default time to something other than 11:45 pm the day before so that when I set an alarm for a new task, the alarm time is 8:00 am the day of, or whatever I decided to set my default to. I'm tired of having to change the alarm time for every to-do for which I create an alarm.
And to reiterate; I don't want to create an alarm time by default for each to-do. Rather, when I choose to create an alarm time for a to-do, I want the alarm time to default to my desired time (8:00 am, for instance).

  • DEFAULT alarm settings?

I see that there is an option to have iCal default to a single alarm for New Events.
Is there a way to control the pulldown for the second event? These are all screwy when I do the pulldown for a second or third alarm:
play sound 'basso' one minute before
play sound 'tink' one minute before
play sound 'submarine' 15 minutes before etc
    Thanks.

Ok, I figured it out. It apparently DOES store the last 5 alarm settings, it just doesn't display them. You know, because that makes sense. So just click Alarm and set it to anything, then click Alarm AGAIN to edit the alarm, and the list should show up. It's an extra step, but its better than having to input all the info every time.

  • ICal default alarms modification

    Hi all!
I've had my Macbook for a while now, but I'm just starting to use iCal regularly. I was wondering if there's an easy way to set it up so that when I create a New Event, there are two default alarms already in there.
1 - an email reminder one day beforehand, and
    2 - an alarm 2 hours beforehand.
    Thanks in advance!
    Dan

Yes this is definitely not well thought through by the ical developers, i've been sending feedback messages about this to apple for about a year now. I only hope enough other people do the same so they do notice it at some point.
Not only is iCal missing the option of adding more default alarms to normal events, but also birthday calendar! How the heck could they not think of that?
Seems like we'll just have to wait for this stuff..

  • Why doesn't iCal remember alarm settings for to-dos?

In iCal on Tiger, something I appreciated was that when I set an alarm for a "to-do" item, it remembered the last several choices I had made for alarms. This made setting an alarm quick, as I often use the same settings.
However, with Leopard (at least on my computer) I have to manually enter the alarm every time and there's no drop-down list of recently used choices. There does seem to be such a list for events, but not for to-dos. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a setting I can change, or is this a flaw in the program?

But Firefox's implementation is much nicer since it seems to remember the zoom level for each domain you visit.
    Hi Thomas...
There's a Safari extension called, "Zoom by Site" that might work for you.
"ZoomBySite replaces the built-in zoom in Safari with a version that automatically restores the zoom level for each site with the settings from your last visit. This relieves you from having to Zoom In a few times each time you visit those sites with tiny fonts."
    Here's how to find it.
Click Safari from your Safari menu bar top of your screen. From the drop down menu click Safari > Extensions..
    Select Productivity on the left.
When you find Zoom by Site click Install Now.
To access that extension, back to your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.

  • ICal default launch settings

Is there a way to set iCal to open on the current date by default?

I don't know of a way to set the option you want. Maybe someone else does.
I do know a workaround: click on your Notification Centre in the top right corner of your computer's display and click on [today]

  • Default alarms changed.  Why?

For many moons since, my iCal default alarm in Inspector has been to send an email to me, which is what I wanted.
Recently and with no known action by me, (I cannot with certainty say when but perhaps with the upgrade from OSX.6.5 to OSX.6.6?) the default alarm in Inspector has changed to Sound / Basso / 5 hours before.
How can I get this to go back to my preferred email default and why has it suddenly changed?
I've looked in Preferences and can see no way of changing it, nor can I find anything which I might be able to change elsewhere.
    Many thanks in advance.

May I trespass on your collective good will and resurrect this query? It's still driving e nuts!
Another thread (here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12785168&#12785168) talks about changing the default alarm sound, but I want to change the default alarm type.
I'm very nervous about altering "standard" files as I'm highly likely to screw things up, so can anyone help me change the Alarm default to email rather than an alert sound?
Given simple instructions (+very very+ simple!) I'm prepared to have a go at editing things, but only if they are really really simple and understandable by a lobotomised amoeba!
Until an update a while back, email was the [my?] default, but it's now Basso sound which is absolutley useless for my needs.
I know I can change it manually every time, but that is a right royal pain in the fundament and I often forget.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Change default alarm

Hi chaps, when I add an event to iCal it's alarm for email defaults to 15 minutes before, I always change this to 1 day before, is there a way of changing the default please ? Regards Roger

See here for BBEdit, however you don't need to be editing the plist file using an advanced text editor to do this.
The terminal has a defaults command that allows to to do this without messing around your preference files with a text editor (to my mind a sure recipe for disaster if you don't know what you are doing).
    Quit iCal.
    Open the terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
Copy the line below (changing the word Tink to the name of the sound you want) into the Terminal window and press return
defaults write com.apple.iCal 'Default alarm sound' 'Tink'
Open iCal, new default alarms should now use that sound.
    Best wishes

  • Ical defaults

Is there anyway to change to default alarm settings for ical events?
Can I customize it like in the desktop and make an alarm come 10 hours before instead of a day etc.
It would seem you should be able to do this as lots of times I want to be notifed the night before for something happening the next morning and the time frame does not work into the given options.
    BF

What you see here is what you get. There is no further customization available.

  • How do you set/change the default alarm TYPE in iCal?

I like to think I'm a power user, but this one I just can't figure out.  The question/problem is: How do you sent the default alarm TYPE in iCal?  The problem is illustrated in the picture below in the blue circled area.
Specifically, whenever I set a new event in iCal, it defaults to this window with the default alert being "Default (1 hour before)."  The one hour before is fine, but the problem is, WHAT is the default?  It seems to be just a sound, but that's not good enough to actually alert me of anything.
The goal I'm trying to achieve with this post is to determine how to CHANGE the "default" new event alert FROM "Default (1 hour before)" TO one of two alerts that I actually find useful:  I want MY "default" new event alert to be either "email" to the primary address, OR, "Message with Sound".
    Any ideas, folks?  Thanks.

Understand.  I am in the edit mode for my contact.  I see all the contact info.  There is no right click or other means to change the DEFAULT address that autofill uses (it also is first to appear if I type my name in an e-mail). For instance for a group e-mail you can change the default addresses of each contact by control-clicking on the group in Address Book. I can't seem to make the default change in my v-card.

  • How can I change the default alarm for events in ical?

    How to change default alarm

I've been curious about this issue as well. I think it would be nice if there were more options to select the default alarm... from within the preferences themselves. Even being able to choose how many days before vs. always figuring out how many minutes are in multiple days.
While someone has found a method for changing the sound to accompany messages, users are still not able to select the type. I prefer message only (no sound), although I supposed this is the same as the current default minus any sound. I tried blank and "" entries for 'Default alarm sound' in the .plist file with no success (blank reverts back to Basso, and "" just didn't work).
I wonder if there are some other items that could be listed in the .plist file to offer more choices such as "Default alarm type". Is there a way to figure out what key variables/values iCal uses for? Someone must have figured out that iCal will look in the .plist file for a 'default sound value'. I'm guessing that there are more of these values that could be set by the user.
A similar question - it would be nice to be able to set the default alarm time for all-day events. I suppose it doesn't matter all that much since 11:45pm probably means I'll just get the message the next morning; I still guess I'd prefer something like 8am though.
    Forgive the novel...
    -John

  • Possible to change default alarm from "Message with Sound" to "Email"?

I was wondering if there is a way to change the default alarm when creating an event in iCal, from "Message with sound" to "Email". The option is not available in preferences, and I was just hoping that there might be a way to change the default, using Terminal, and if not, perhaps there is another way. If anyone knows of a way to accomplish this, I’d sure appreciate it.
Thanks very much for your help.

Your not alone - I'm also looking for a solution to this problem.

  • Default alarm on ical?

How can I set the default alarm setting for an event in iCal to none?

no you can't delete the 'native' apps (the ones that come with the ipod). some of them you can turn off in restrictions, (under settings, general) - the others you have to learn to ignore, i move mine to the last page so at least they're out of the way.
