ICal defaults to all-day

Migrated to Mountain Lion and now I find that iCal always defaults to All-Day for new events. I've seen discussions here about using the Cmd-N keys to start a new event which you can then modify, but is there not a setting we can change in Terminal to modify this behavior?

Quit iCal, and try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Since that Library is now hidden, you have to use the Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart and check iCal for functionality.
Also go to System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/re-set the appropriate "Region."

Ical default to all day

ical use to default to times for appts. Now it when I put in a new event it automatically sets it as an all day appt. I think this happened when I upgraded to Lion. Any suggestions as to how to get back to defaulting to a timed event?

In Month view iCal now defaults to all day. Put a time in the description to make it a timed event (something like "Meeting at 2pm").

How do I get ical to stop defaulting to "all day"
for events?

That happens if you double click to enter a new event while the calendar is displaying a whole month.
Instead of typing "Meeting" [Return], type "Meeting 9:30-11:30" [Return], and the event will be entered with the title "Meeting", a start time of 9:30am and an ending time of 11:30am. You still have to double click the event if you want something other than the default alerts.
If you like the default meeting length, you could just type "Meeting 9:30" or "Meeting at 9" for a default-length meeting with the default alert time and type. It appears that you need the ":" or the "at" to make sure iCal recognizes a time instead of a plain number.
The gist of this answer appears in other threads, but I think Apple does a poor job of documenting the change in behavior between versions. I did search the help files without success before googling, which led me here.

How do I change: when I double click on a day to add a new event it defaults to All Day and Busy

iCal 5.0.2 (1571) Is there any way to change this? I can't do it in preferences.
This is a real pain. To make an event for a specific time I have to double click again, uncheck "All Day" and then put in the time for the start of the event. Even then, if I put in the start time, the end time remains at 6:30 PM, so I have to change that too.
If I really do want an All Day event, why does it sometimes default to Busy, rather than always to Free?
The old iCal was far superior in this regard; double click once on a day and the add an event dialogue box appears, defaulting to a time close to when you were making the event, and, if my memory serves correct observing the preference I set with respect to default length of the event.
I'm aware that Command N gets me a new Quick Event, its a bit better in that if the event i enter opens the big "add an event dialogue box", it has defaulted to an hour long event. But, if I click on a day, and then hit Command N, the new event is put in Today, and not the day I had selected. It also defaults to All Day, unless I put in a time for the event in the Quick Event box. Why would I do that when I know I want to enter info into a number of fields, and doing so is easiest from the big dialogue box. If i don't enter a time in Quick Event, or enter a day, I still have to double click the event that was created by Quick Event to open the big dialogue box, and start fresh entering everything. So, I find Quick Event's implimentation cumbersome, overall ending up with more keystrokes and clicks to enter the details I normally enter, than the old iCal.
So, if someone knows how to change the double click behaviour back to the old way, or how to get Quick Event to open the dialogue box on the day i have already selected, any help will be appreciated.
Also, is there some way to get this feedback to Apple? Support SiteMap doesn't show a link for feedback.

I have sort of the exact same problem. Extremely far away from user friendly
I have an second issue as well: When I hook off all-day it comes up with an 8 hour event!
And then if I put in a late start hour it pushes end time to next day due to the 8 hour event suggestion.
All in all this gives a lot of changes just to enter an event.

I learnt from your input to use this fuction. At least that comes up with a one hour event as default.

Here are some Lion iCal event entry tips:
1. Click Add at the top of the iCal window or press Command (⌘)-N.
Events are added automatically to your default calendar.
If you want to choose a different calendar for the event, hold down the Add button (+), and then choose a calendar.
To change your default calendar, choose iCal > Preferences, click General, and then select a calendar from the Default Calendar pop-up menu.
2. Enter a name, date, and time duration for the event, and then press Return.
For example, you can enter “Super Bowl Party Feb 6,” “Movie with Rebecca on Friday at 7pm,” “Soccer Game on Saturday from 11am-1pm,” or “Breakfast with Jon,” and then press Return.
If you don’t enter a time duration for the event, iCal sets the event’s duration to 1 hour.
If you don’t enter any time information for the event, iCal makes the event an all-day event.
If you enter “breakfast” or “morning,” iCal sets the event to start at 9 a.m.
If you enter “lunch “ or “noon,” iCal sets the event to start at 12 p.m.
If you enter “dinner” or “night,” iCal sets the event to start at 8 p.m.

No iCal alert on "All day" events in Lion :-(

When creating an "All day event" in iCal in OSX Lion the event is not preset with an alert as it used to be in Snow Leopard. That is frustrating as we now have to this this manually.

How? I doubleclick an empy space in the top area underneath the leather to make an appointment. This then becomes an All day event but when I edit it I see that the alarm is not set. I have to do this manually. Only hour based events will get the default alert set.

ICal imports Palm all day events as 2 day events - easy to fix?

I want to make the switch from Palm desktop 4 to using iCal 3 but I've run into a problem. When I import the vcal exported from Palm, the iCal makes all of the all (one) day events into 2 day events.
Is there anyway to fix this so the all day event displays only on the day it was set for in Palm?
I'm hoping I don't have to do all of these by going back to my oldest events and changing the dates by hand because I have almost 9 years of data in my Palm calendar.

Just to update what I've been trying without success.
I exported the Palm datebook as .csv file. I then edited any entries that began and ended the same day without any times, i.e. the one day all day events, to begin at 12:01am and end at 11:59pm. Then after backing up my Palm user data and prefs, I erased my Palm data and reimported this .csv file into Palm desktop, then I reexported it to a vCal and imported that into iCal.
It made a mess out of things because I discovered some of these all day events also repeated. I'm not sure what to do with repeating events.
I tried going into iCal and manually changing the events but then I end up with many duplicates if they are repeating.
I exported the iCal data and opened it in Text Wrangler. Then I exported the calendar from Sunbird. It seems like the iCal is adding an extra "end date" that isn't in the file when I import it into Sunbird.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I noticed that the issue only happens to specific user with specific computer. Please do the following checking to narrow down the issue:
1. please update the Outlook client with the latest patches and service packs.
2. disable using Exchange cached mode and check whether the issue happens in Online mode in this computer.
3. Start
Outlook in safe mode to have a try.
4. Perform a clean boot
in your Windows for the new machine.

A multi-day/all-day event in the iCloud calendar does not show up in iCal if the "all-day" box is checked

When I establish a multi-day event on iCloud but do not check the "all-day" box it shows up just fine in iCal as an event that exists on each day along side the other events that occupy those dates. However, when I check the "all-day" box when editing the event (in either calendar) the event completely disappears from the iCal calendar (it shows up across the top of the iCloud calendar in the "all-day eventt" line. On my iPhone, there is no change in appearance (the event shows up on each day).
Anybody have a clue what causes this? Maybe just a "feature" of iCal beta?

This is exactly what's happening to me. I've been able to recreate this on a Touch also with OS4. It's not occuring on OS3. I've only been able to recreate the problem on July 30th and August 1st calendar dates for some reason. It may be happening on other dates also but I havn't been able to find any.
To recreate the problem go into day view on the calendar. Go to August 1st and create a calendar entry. Then touch the left arrow to go back a day then touch the right arrow to return to august 1st and your entry is invisible. It's still there because if you go forward a day then go back a day it shows.
I've been using list view only now to avoid missing these invisible entries.

ICal repeating old all day events...?

I had seen duplicate events, but this is so weird!
Some all day events such as birthdays are shown like 10 times the same day at the same hour, just like that...
When trying to delete copies to see if keeping one copy the problem solves, there seems to be more duplicate than graphicaly shown... so i cant delete all the duplicates...

Any ideas???

Exact same problem here. December 13th of 2010 has an infinite number of all-day birthday events on it. No matter how many I delete, new ones keep appearing.

Ical limitation with all day events

I fill up my calendar quite a lot with all day events. The space allowed for the events is limited so some events don't show. There should be a stretchable bar to allow visibility or not.
I wonder how to pass on this suggestion to Apple.

Agrr, I couldn't find how to delete this question. As often when i get to ask a question i get the answer. My events don't disappear, they are there and there is a scroll bar that shows when i scroll in the all day event part.

Ical accepts and all day invite, but shows 12AM start time and no end time.

When I receive a calendar invite for several days and the invite should read as an all day event, it shows up as a meeting at 12AM. I have reset the region, and the time zone, but this is still an issue. Has anyone else have this problem and if so, how do I resolve it?

Open the System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats tab and change the Region from Custom to your local one.

on lion ical defaults to ALL DAY, can I change that? in the past it defaulted to one hour appointments, what happened to that?

Unfortunetely the only way is to uncheck the box each time you set up an entry. I trust enough feedback from users will convince Apple to change that in the future.

the default - "all day" or "time based" - depends on the view in iCal. In month view the default is "all day",
in week view or day view it is a time interval, if you use "File -> New Event". If you add the event by double clicking into the calendar, it will depend on the section you are clicking - in the all day section you will add an all-day event, in the time-grid you will enter an event with start-end time.
