ICal: email alarm creation fails with error "You must add your own card..."

When I try to set an email alarm in an event in iCal, it gives an error that "You must add your own card and email address in Address Book to be able to use mail alarms." But I do have such a card in my Address book. E.g., I can use the "Go to my card" command from the Card menu in Address Book. I even exported then deleted my entry and reimported it and marked it as my card again and still iCal will not set a mail alarm for any events. I've also tried setting other cards to be "my card" and iCal still hates me. Help! I need this feature and used this all the time before it broke early this week.
Is there a way to rebuild my Address Book or something?

OK, I finally fixed it. I told Dot Mac to replace all contacts on my computer with the synchronized stuff out on the cloud. I don't know what someone would do if they didn't synchronize -- maybe it wouldn't have happened to them. Anyhow, replacing my contacts with the stuff from Dot Mac or Mobile Me or whatever Apple is calling it now worked.

Now iCal every time I want to send an email alert puts up this message: You must add your own card and email address in Contacts to be able to use mail alerts.
COME ON I HAVE DONE THIS OVER AND OVER TO NO RESULT.
    MACINTOSH WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
    UNHAPPY !

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal.

  • ICal/email alarm issue, please help if you can....

Hello. I am just starting to use iCal and have been setting email alarms to remind me of my iCal events. Here is the issue I am having, if mail is closed and the email alarm time has gone by, the email does not show up. Any ideas?
Another thing I noticed is that if I am on my computer, mail is closed, and an alarm time comes by - mail will open up on its own but an email never shows up in my inbox. Any ideas on this one?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Your problem is that the command you're trying to run includes spaces.
Spaces are used by the shell to delimit arguments, so when you say:
    script with command " sudo /Volumes/Adobe CS3 Design Premium/AdobeCS3/Setup.app/Contents/MacOS/Setup"
The shell sees this as the command 'sudo' with four arguments - "/Volumes/Adobe", "CS3", "Design", and "Premium/AdobeCS3/Setup.app/Contents/MacOS/Setup". It's no wonder it doesn't work.
You have a couple of options. One is to escape each of the spaces by preceeding them with a backslash. This tells the shell to treat the next character as a real character, not as a delimiter, e.g. "/Volumes/Adobe\ CS3\ Design\ Premium...". If you take this approach, though, you need to be aware that AppleScript also uses the backslash to escape characters, so you need to escape the backslash itself - the first one tells AppleScript to treat the second backslash as a literal, and so the shell sees the second backslash and can deal with the spaces:
    >do script "sudo /Volumes/Adobe\\ CS3\\ Design\\ Premium/AdobeCS3/Setup.app/Contents/MacOS/Setup --mode=silent --deploymentFile=/Volumes/Adobe\\ C3\\ Design\\ Premium/AdobeCS3/deployment/liteinstall.xml"
The other option is to use the 'quoted form of' a string. 'Quoted form' takes a string and makes it shell-safe:
    <pre class=command>tell application "Terminal"
set myCommand to "/Volumes/Adobe CS3 Design Premium/AdobeC3 blah blah blah"
do script "sudo " & quoted form of myCommand
    end tell</pre>
Depending on what else you're doing, you might also find it easier to eschew the Terminal altogether and just run the command directly via 'do shell script', but the same caveats apply.

Have you tried running the command multiple times back to back? It might just work. In this ticket someone also shoved `udevadm trigger` in between each try. I cannot vouch for this approach, but I cannot see any harm either.
Have the drives been used previously by ZFS? If so, maybe the labels are not in the expected locations. You might consider using dd to zero out the MBT/GPT manually. I know sgdisk -Z did not work for me in a particular instance that I had to replace a drive. Keep in mind that unlike a MBT, GPT is both at the start and end of a drive. The seek option of dd (as opposed to skip) is what you'd want.
Still, I know I've personally run into this issue before. It certainly can be frustrating. And it can feel like you're beating around a bush just to get it to work. Here is a fairly recent ticket with essentially your same issue.

  • When you must start your own thread and why people shouldnt have to

I just wanted to say that I get pretty annoyed when a Moderator is extremely rigid in their interpretation of forum rules.  Especially when it comes to telling people not to resurrect old topics.
If posting on old topics was bad, you should just close any topic with no responses for 30 days.  But you don't because that would be absurd.  Just because a topic has not had replies in 6 months does not mean the thread has run its course.  It may just be waiting for someone with more information, better information, or just better discussion.
You know why it makes sense to jump on another thread?  Because most users likely dont stop by to help others on a regular basis, I certainly don't, and forum moderator make up the bulk of responses and are not always the most helpful.  But I get notified when someone posts to a thread I am already participating in.  So it brings me back.  So if you have the same issue, or more info about an older thread, by all means please post in it, to bring me and everyone else back with new information we may have learned.   You instantly get an audience of people that know something about your issue.  And it makes threads more complete, because so many times threads just fizzle out with no conclusion until someone resurrects them.
I just want to throw that out there, because this is an MSI user forum, and I am sure a lot of users would like to avoid repeating themselves, copying old info from older relevant threads into a new one.   There is a reason you tell people to search, because there is relevant info already there, and if their issue is the same, then they should be able to add to that thread discussion.
Hijacking a thread is completely different, and should not be tolerated when your post is not relevant.  Resurrecting threads should not be discouraged if they still have travel left in them, because it brings people back and makes thread that you search for more complete.

It is always best to offer individual personal assistance with each OP's concerns. A large percentage of the time, the people that hijack or re-open old threads are just plain lazy to open their own, and often don't even have the same mainboard or exact same hardware. Two identical boards and hardware configurations can run and perform different due to variances in the actual components. To make matters worse, some give absolutely no system component information on which to base a suggestion or recommendation on anyway.

Rules are rules! What's the point of having them if not enforced? There is a distinct difference between 'rule' and 'guideline'.
Typical example of a hijacker! Doesn't even list the CPU they have! If it was up to me, I would make signatures mandatory at the time of registration! Too much time back and forth is wasted asking for it. Then, a common response is that they don't think it's relevant! Say what? It wouldn't be asked for if it wasn't 'relevant' to provide a better troubleshooting strategy.

  • So basically passbook is card star but you can't add your own cards in manually?

So if passbook is like news stand and you can only use cards that are in the App Store, then isn't it just like cardstar? Or Thin Wallet? Whut makes passbook SOOOOO special?

Part of the reason for such stuttery playback performance lies with the limitations of the single SATA connection (channel) itself. You see, SATA is not full duplex, but only half-duplex. That means that a block of transfers going in one direction must be completed before a block of transfers can even begin in the opposite direction. Think of the SATA channel (single connection) as a single-lane stretch of highway with traffic signals at each end. What's worse, that single disk must also deal with the Windows pagefile, the media cache, previews and various other things all going on at the same time. As a result, the effective performance of that single disk can plummet by a factor of six: That single disk, after accounting for all of the tasks it must perform at the same time as video playback, is left with only about 32 MB/s of bandwidth available for Premiere Pro.
In other words, that single disk is being severely overworked as it is.

  • Windows 8 backup (Win7 File Recovery system image) creation to NAS device fails with error 0x807800C5

    Hi,
I have a ZyXEL NSA310 NAS device on my network that I use for backups (as well as a media server). I have been very happy with it as, amongst other things, it has a gigabit Ethernet connection. I recently upgraded my home laptop from Win7 Pro to Win8
Pro. Under Win7 the NAS device worked perfectly as the backup target. I could back up file sets and - most importantly to me - create a system image on the device should I need to restore the system in the event of a full disk failure.
When I upgraded to Win8 it kept the Win7 settings and it looked like it was just going to work, then as it came to create the system image it failed with error code 0x807800C5 and message "The version does not support this version of the file format".
I have searched the internet and seen that others have had similar issues on Win7 and Win8 with NAS devices where they have had to hack the device to get it working - though it isn't clear that this has been successful for everyone. This isn't an option
for me as the NSA310 is a closed device and in any event I don't see why I should have to hack the device when clearly this is a Win8 issue (since Win7 worked perfectly).
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue so that I can create the full backups I require?
    Thanks,
    Phil

Thanks willis! I will look into the iSCSI route. A quick Google search and I can see some mention of the NSA310 and iSCSI so maybe it does support it.
One question: Have you ever attempted to restore a system image from a NAS iSCSI device with a Win8 Restore Disk? Is it easy? I just want to be sure that it is possible to do so in case the worst happens and I need to restore the entire image onto a
    new disk.
Hopefully Microsoft will fix the issue with the standard NAS setup with an update in the future, but I don't want to wait for it.
    Thanks again,
    Phil
Hi Phil,  No I have not had to do this yet, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work as the iSCSI disk looks just like a regular hard disk to the OS. I agree that Microsoft should fix the direct NAS support as the iSCSI approach does have the downside
of dedicating a fixed chunk of your NAS drive to the iSCSI disk that you have to choose when you create the disk whereas the direct NAS just uses the actual space currently needed by the backup. Also I had some trouble getting authentication (access rights)
to work so I left the iSCSI portal as open access - which is OK for a home solution but not a good idea in general. I will revisit this for my own setup and see if I can get it working but just wanted to mention it in case you have the same issue. It manifests
itself as not being able to connect to the iSCSI portal due to failed authentication when running iSCSI initiator setup.
