ICal/Entourage sync question

Sorry, this might be long. I use Entourage primarily, with a Palm device; my husband uses iCal with a Palm device. I'm trying to figure out a way to get my calendar and his calendar syncing so that we can see each others' appointments.
Here's where i am now: Entourage syncs with iCal. I publish my iCal to www.icalx.com; he subscribes to that calendar (and vice versa.)
My question: I have my Entourage preferences set to have Entourage events override events in Sync Services, rather than merge (I was getting lots of doubled events before I chose this option.) If I download his calendar onto iCal on its own calendar (NOT on the calendar called "Entourage") will it either disappear (b/c Entourage events will override in the sync) or eat up my data in Entourage?
And...does anybody have any easier ways to do this? AppleTalk doesn't work and we got tired of exporting and emailing them to each other every morning to reflect updates. (Man, somebody should write an Apple Script to do that!) And I don't want to pay $99/year for a .Mac account just to do this.
Thanks, and sorry for the length.
Heath

Entourage only syncs to iCal with the "Entourage" calendar. So, in iCal, you can have several other calendars in addition to the "Entourage" calendar, and Entourage will never touch them.
So, if you download your husband's calendar from icalx, you will not lose it when Entourage syncs w/ iCal.
Also, you will be able to publish your "Entourage" calendar to icalx (via iCal) and he will be able to subscribe to it in iCal no problem.
However, it is going to be more work for you b/c you can't set iCal to subscribe to a calendar and have that same subscribed calendar sync w/ Entourage. Out of the box this option isn't available.
So, as far as free options go, you could:
1) Use iCal for calendaring.
2) Manually drag in the .ics file into Entourage each time.
3) Create an applescript to assist with this (one idea would be create a "husband" category in Entourage, and use an applescript to import the .ics, assigning it the "husband" category. Each time you import a new .ics file the applescript deletes the old items in the "husband" category).
If you are willing to invest some time in it, applescript is worthwhile to learn and you will find excellent help in the applescript forums.

  • Ical newbie sync question

I have a macbook 2 GHz intel core 2 duo, with 2gb of ram, running mac os x 10.7.1.
I'm a long-time mac user, but total ical newbie....in that I've never really used this feature much in the past.
What I'd **like to be able to do is use ical on my laptop & sync it to my [semi] smart phone, a samsung SGH-A877.
*SPECIFICALLY* I need appointments made on my cell phone to be sync'd to ical, and vice/versa, and then be able to print out a 'report' from ical as to the month's activity. I'm sure this is very very seamless for iphone users, but the buy in $$ for an iphone is prohibitive.
So, I need to know 2 things:
    1. Can I do what I want to do with my existing phone? and if not...
    2. Can I do what I want to do with a *different phone, but not iphone or any of the other top drawer big bucks phones?
    Thanks.

  • Ical entourage sync

I recently upgrade my operating system to Mac OS X 10.6.1. Since this upgrade I can't sync my entourage calendar with my ical and my IPhone. I have tried the following with no success: unchecking the sync feature in all the apps, Rebuilding the entourage database, importing the events from entourage into ical.
Any thoughts on what is happening?

    Hi:
I'd like to sync Entourage with iCal also BUT I want iCal as the primary calendar.
I'd like to see ALL the data on my iCal synced onto Entourage.
I have iPhone, iMac, and Macbook; all with mobile Me running.
The iCals are all up to speed but Entourage calendar only has the few events from iCal that are from the entourage sub calendar.
    Any help?
    Thanks,

  • ICal/Outlook syncing question on a PC/Mac

So I have a mac at home (synced with video/music/ical/photos) and a PC at work with my work Outlook calendar.
I was impressed to see that I could sync outlook at work without breaking my connection to my mac at home. However, what I don't like is that the touch will also push my ical calendars into my work outlook on my PC. I'd rather keep home and work separate. Does anyone know how to merge calendars on the touch, but prevent merging on the computers themselves?

    Hi Scott,
I have had a few growing pains working out what to do on this exact subject and I am slowly getting there.
I am still working on it and will update as I proceed but I think I have the start of an answer. Most of the settings that can achieve this are within the iPhone and you need to ensure that these are set correctly to achieve what you want. At the moment I am changing these whilst my iPhone is connected to my Macbook G4 which is the computer I set up the iPhone with O2 the service provider in the UK when I got it last week.
I have MobileMe and work email account set up on my iPhone that are pushing email fine and dandy.
Here is the important bit, on your iPhone go into settings>mail, contacts, calendar>work email account. You will see the choice of ON or OFF for mail, contacts, calendar. Check these are all ON for your work email account and this will sync all the relevant Outlook data with no problem. Choose OFF for contacts and calendar on your personal email account and this will give you what you want. I currently have mail and bookmarks selected on my personal account this gives me the stuff I want on my iPhone.
You can then set up the other sync items through iTunes on the computer you normally sync the iPhone with.
At the moment, this looks like your iCal and Address book on your mac will remain empty but I will keep playing with the sync settings in iTunes until I find the way forward.
Still waiting for Apple to come up with a "private" setting for calendar entries like always happened when I added calendar events to my Nokia E60. I don't want work seeing what is going on there really. Unless, of course, there is another setting that I am missing for this.
    Cheers

  • Duplication of events in Entourage/iCal from syncing iPhone

Okay, I am sick to death of this..... I have all the latest software - Entourage 8, OS 10.5.5, iPhone 2.2.... When I sync, iCal is not smart enough to recognize that events in Entourage are the same events... and Entourage is the same way, so I have ended up with as few as three and as many as 35 of the same event on a given day. I have changed every setting I can find. Also, although I've told iCal to delete tasks & events over 30 days old, it's not doing it.... so the cycle is perpetuated and I end up with MORE of the same event on my calendar.
does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? And why in God's name won't iPhone just sync with Entourage without the middle man of iCal and Address Book?
    Thank you!

Okay, here is what I've found.
First thought two disclaimers: 1. I am no tech support person - by any means. 2. I'm not even sure if I can recall how I corrected this since I had to go back and forth in so many settings so many times (spending 80 minutes on the phone with a tech support buddy of mine).
    But, here goes:
iPhone has to use iCal to sync with Entourage. It's a work around, it *****, but that's the way it goes.
So open iCal and make sure that there is only one Entourage calendar that has been created (there should be a list of calendars with check boxes on the left side), if there are two or more, delete the extra ones (right click, choose delete). I think that if you look in Entourage preferences and under Sync Preferences ever clicked 'sync to iCal' off and then on again, you may have created a second Entourage calendar in the process. When I was doing this, I accidently deleted the original Entourage calendar that I had and the one left over was actually empty - which may have helped me in this process to start 'fresh' and perhaps stop the constant loop of repopulating events between iCal and Entourage.
Make sure that in Entourage preferences under Sync Preferences 'sync to address book' and 'sync to iCal' are both clicked on.
In iSync Preferences, I had to reset the sync history there and start all over again then hit sync on iTunes.
Leave iCal preferences alone. They should be fine.
If ever told there is a conflict in your syncing the calenders, choose Entourage over iCal for all (if this is an option - at first for me, it wasn't and only iCal and iSync were listed as options until eventually, somehow, one popped up with the options of both iCal and Entourage).
If/when given the option to use Entourage as the primary source, iCal as the primary source, or merge the two, choosing merge should allow you to either update your phone or Entourage and have it populate the other. Choosing 'entourage' will only allow you to update entourage and have your phone sync, but not the other way around.
The worst part of all this? I've found no work around to delete the extra events listed in Entourage. You still have to delete the new ones by hand, one by one, even if the above fix works.
I can unfortunately pretty much guarantee that I've missed several key points, verbatim language, or even a modicum of logical steps in the above, but again I was going back and forth so many times that I can't even begin to tell you how best to solve this in a linear manner. I'm hoping that this provides a little direction, maybe you post a follow-up question (or eight), and then I can provide a few more tidbits to hopefully get you back out of this miserable loop of re-populating events.
    Good luck!

  • Entourage and iCal not syncing with iPhone

I have been having a problem lately. I get many calendar entries over email from my parents and I get them on my phone with only the name of it as the subject of the email and I can't approve it over my phone. One of my questions is am I able to approve or deny them over my phone and then sync it to my computer? Also my MobileMe free trial expired and I don't want to purchase a real trial. My calendar entries will not sync to my phone for some reason. I have iCal and Entourage synced but it won't go onto my phone. And when I plug my phone into my computer to sync, it only says my calendar can be synced with MoblieMe and won't give me an option to change it. (Extra info: I have a second generation iPhone)
Thank you so much and I hope people are able to help me.
    Cheers.

So I got on the phone with APP today and it turns out iCal was pretty messed up.
A bunch of the files for iCal were missing (com.apple.iCal.plist) and such.
    Simple solution in the end:
Completely delete iCal (delete the icon from your applications folder) and reinstall iCal using your latest operating system disk (in my case, the OS X 10.5 disk). All my calendars, etc, where happily there after I reinstalled iCal.

  • How to clear all details in iCal before syncing with Entourage?

Deary me! I have been back and forth to iCal and Entourage trying to find which would be best. I have decided that Entourage will suffice - although not perfect by any means. In the meantime I have completely jammed up my iCal and daren't not try syncing Entourage yet otherwise I will never understand it and my iphone will be full of toot! Anyone know how to clear all details in iCal before syncing with Entourage? (Happy Sundays!!)

Answer .... delete all calendars in iCal but leave the Entourage one there! Don't delete that as there will be big trouble!

  • Can't get entourage and ical to sync

    Hi,
I've had a macbook for a while but got an iphone 3gs last week and I'm just trying to set it up. My addresses and contacts seem to be syncing to my iphone OK but not my entourage 2004 calendar. I have gone into entourage preferences and ticked all the synch boxes and when I open ical I have an entourage calendar but none of my appointments are on there (the only thing that is are public holidays and birthdays?).
When I tried to sync entourage with ical he just hung so I thought this may be due to number of entourage calendar entries. So I went onto entourage and changed it so that anything over 12 months old is deleted but now I have checked and I still have all my calendar entries on entourage from 2005 so that hasn't worked. How can I delete the old calendar entries?
So as I understand it in order for my calendar to be synced on my iphone it has to go through ical (even though I don't use that on my Macbook). As I can't get entourage to sync my calendar with ical I can't get my calendar onto my iphone at present which is a real pain.
Would I be better looking at mobileme or something similar or do I just need to setup entourage and ical differently?
As you can see I really need some help! All advice very gratefully received.
    Cheers
    Ergo

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING - BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA IN ENTOURAGE.
You can delete everything in iCal by deleting the calendar (Entourage or Personal or temp or whatever Calendar is there). You can delete everything in Address book either by highlighting all the contacts and hitting delete or by deleting the Address Book folder in Address Book.
The key in getting them to sync properly with Entourage is deleting all the preferences in your Library folder under <your user>. Delete anything with Microsoft Entourage in it. I also deleted iCal preferences and Address Book Preferences.
I also found it necessary to go to the Office folder and delete the sync services folder.
Also go to Entourage sync services and turn OFF syncing with iCal and Address Book. Exit Entourage.
Go to your application folder, isync - reset sync history (button at bottom of screen).
Then bring up Entourage, sync services, and reactivate syncing with iCal and Address Book.
Everything should work. I have been struggling with this the last week or two. I've had innumerable exchanges with MS who have said anything with syncing is not their problem it's an apple application. Through these discussion boards I pieced together all of the elements above. But be sure to back up anything you want to keep before you do any of this.
It should work. It did for me (at least last night and all day today). Good luck.

  • Entourage Sync with iCal & Address Book - Fixed!

Finally found a solution that really works.
    Background
I had the infamous issue of trying to get Entourage Calendar and Contacts to Sync with iCal & Address book for the purpose of syncing with iTunes on my iPhone.
I've had most of the symptoms listed on this site.
It only syncs one way, Entourage Calendar shows up in iCal, but it's blank, Entourage Calendar does not show up at all in iCal, but contacts show up in Address book.
I've read nearly every post about it and tried all the various fixes listed, but none of them worked, or at least not consistently.
    My setup:
OS X 10.5.5 MacBook Pro (latest updates)
    Entourage 2004 (latest patches)
(If your using Mobile me, log out before you do this)
Here's what you'll need to do:
    1. Backup your Main Identity which contains all your entourage info, email, contacts, calendars, etc. (Just in case you goof something up)
It's located in your home user account ~User/youraccount/documents/Microsoft User Data (Backup this whole folder)
If you don't know all your email credentials such as username, password, smtp, pop info, jott it down as it will save you some time later.
    2. Launch Entourage and uncheck the Sync Services. Quit Entourage and all Office Apps.
Also you should archive all your entourage data if you want to copy it to the new setup.
Archive the contacts and Calendar Events separately.
    3. Launch iCal and manually delete the Entourage Calendar (if present) Quit iCal.
    4. Now open your documents folder and locate the folder named Microsoft User Data and rename the folder to Microsoft User Data Original
    5. Create a new OS X User from the System Preferences... Accounts
    6. Logoff your current user account and login to your new user account.
    7. Launch Entourage and enter your email info.
    8. Now create a single calendar event.
    9. Go to Entourage Preferences, and check the Sync Services. (click OK, etc.)
    10. Wait 5 minutes, then launch iCal and you will see the Entourage Calendar with your single event.
You should also see your contact that was created when you setup email in the Address Book.
If this worked you've isolated the syncing problem to a corrupt file in your user account or corrupt data in your entourage account.
You can go back to your original user account and delete all the info from entourage to see if you had corrupt data in entourage, (youd did back it up first, right?) or you can follow the procedures below to move all your stuff over to the new login account.
Now you'll need to migrate your data from your Old login account to your new login account.
(I've tried just moving the new Entourage identity back to the old account, and it didn't always work)
The easiest way to move data between accounts is to login as root.
To enable the root user, Go to Utilities, Directory Utility, and under the edit menu, select enable root user, enter a unique password, later you can disable root login when your all done)
Logout of your new login and login as root with the new password you just created
When it prompts for a username type "root". If you don't have that option click the Other login and then type in root as the username and the new password.
Once your logged in as root, be careful as you can pretty much trash anything without any warnings.
Now Open your original user folder located in ~User/youraccount as well as the new user you just created
    (not the root account)
Open the folders side by side and drag the contents from old to new:
    Desktop
    Documents
    iTunes
    Movies
    Music
plus any other info you need.
Log back into your new user account, and run a repair permissions from disk utility.
Launch Entourage and enter a new event and contact. Then wait a few minutes and verify that it made it over to iCal & Address book.
If it did, and it should have, you can then import your entourage archives, do contacts first, then wait a few minutes and verify it shows up in Address Book, then do your Calendar events and verify.
When everything is syncing between entourage and iCal/Address Book you can connect your iPhone and enable syncing.
    A few important notes:
-If you have Years worth of Calendar Items in entourage, you will most likely run into problems, so archive your old Events and only restore that which you need.
-You may also need to retrieve old application preferences.
-Once your sure you've got everything, you can delete the Microsoft User Data Original folder that we renamed and put in your Documents Folder.
    Hope this helps somebody out.

Entourage calendar does not sync as you are expecting, with iCal.
Turn your Entourage sync services on (to sync your calendar) and you will notice in iCal a new calendar on the left, called Entourage. Mind has a purple color to it, for example.
Now, in iCal, create a new appointment and assign it TO the Entourage calendar. Now sync, and hey presto it shows up in Entourage.
This is by design, Entourage does not sync ALL of your iCal calendars, it will only sync the Entourage calendar which is created in iCal.
For example, I have Home, Work, Personal and Entourage calendars in iCal - appointments I make with my Home, Work or Personal calendar will not appear in Entourage, period. Only appointments made in iCal using the Entourage calendar will appear in Entourage (after a sync).
Likewise, appointments made IN Entourage Calendar, are sync'd to iCal and are only visible if you show the Entourage calendar in iCal - (it's switched ON by default, but can be switched off by un-ticking the calendar in the left pane of iCal).
    Does this make sense?

  • ICal with Entourage Syncing

Hi, Can't sync iCal and Entourage calenders. Had this working but upgraded (hah!) to Outlook for Mac and now going back to Entourage won't sync.
iCal external sync is crashing daily according to crash log.
Have tried deleting syncs and starting again. No joy. Entourage shows in iCal as calender but no data.
    All software up to date.
    Simon

Hello, Julian, original macrat and LizKual ~
I have the same problem as macrat and Liz.  Syncing (I'm not talking about iSync; I'm talking about Sync Services) between Entourage 2008 and iCal was working just fine until March 16.
Initially, the Entourage calendar, with all its entries, disappeared from iCal.  But with some help from the folks in the Microsoft support forums, I was able to get the Entourage calendar to show up again on the list in iCal's left-hand column but, unfortunately, still without any events.
I've been plugging away in the Microsoft forums ever since.  Can you believe this?!  I haven't been able to use the calendar on my iPhone since March 16!
    See:
    http://www.officeformac.com/ms/ProductForums/Entourage/17016/0
    http://www.office.mvps.org/troubleshoot/syncservices.html- ss2
    http://www.office.mvps.org/syncservices/ical.html#calsync5
    http://www.office.mvps.org/faq_topic/duplicates.html
I have done every relevant thing suggested on these four pages.  I still don't have any Entourage events showing up in iCal (although Entourage 2 is on the list of iCal calendars) and now I have a massive number of duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates, etc., appearing in my Entourage calendar.  The only thing on the above-mentioned pages that I haven't yet tried is Syncrospector. (I bought Xcode and then discovered it was probably included as part of Snow Leopard.  Oh well, I'm soldiering on, even though I'm in way over my head.)
Do you know whether someone has already assembled the code needed to get Syncrospector to eliminate the masses of duplicate calendar entries that Entourage 2008 stands ready to send to Sync Services?  Such info — or, even better, a link — would be much appreciated.  :-)  I've been preparing for this undertaking, but at this rate it could be another two months before I succeed.
Of course, even after I get rid of the duplicates, I'll still need to find a way to get Sync Services to communicate between Entourage and iCal — which is its job, after all. Suggestions on that point would also be welcome.  Maybe Sync Services is choking on the duplicates and that's why it's not sending anything to iCal.  If so, then maybe Syncrospector will take care of both problems.  I can only hope.
    Thanks very much.

  • ICal & Entourage 2008 sync

I know that this isn't a Microsoft support forum but I'm hoping that an Entourage user out there may have some insight.
I have Office 2008 on my MacBook Pro. Under Preferences/Sync Services, I have the box checked to sync my Entourage calendar with iCal. But it doesn't work like a sync, it works like an over-write - meaning that the Entourage calendar is over-writing events in iCal, not syncing them. For example, if I add an event to iCal, it shows up perfectly there. But no matter what I do in Entourage, it does not show up in that calendar. But then if I add an event in the Entourage calendar and re-sync, that Entourage event shows up in iCal but the event I had added to just iCal (the one previous that didn't make it to Entourage) disappears in iCal.
    Has anyone had any success?

    Sue,
Wish I could offer some good advice, but the easy syncing of iCal and Entourage 2008 so far has been impossible if not a nightmare.
When you go to import in Entourage and iCal is NOT listed as "another application", we are in HUGE trouble.
A real shame that in today's world of "New Media" and PDA's like iPhones and Blackberry that the two billionaires from Apple and MS did not provide us with easy and simple export/import/sync tools.
Maybe they should rename Office 2008 to Office 1984

  • Ical and Entourage Sync

I set Entourage to sync with Ical so that I can sync my calendar with my iPhone. It worked at first then it stopped. Now when I set Entourage to sync with iCal it indicates that an entourage calendar is present in iCal but everything is blank. Not sure if this related but this started happening after i downloaded iPhone 3.0 and did my first sync with the phone.

I had just the same issue - sometime after installing iPhone OS 3.0 my Entourage Calendar in iCal stopped syncing, though the calendar in Entourage remained intact and continued to sync with the Exchange server. After going through all of the "sync services reset" protocols I could find, I finally got it to work by clearing the Entourage Calendar Cache. Before doing this, turn off "sync services" in Entourage preferences and make sure your Exchange calendar is synced with the exchange server because this will erase your local version of the Exchange calendar. Next, "control-click" on the calendar folder icon (this is the calendar icon with a green circle with a white check mark that appears when you expand the arrow to the left of your server account name at the top of the left column of a calendar window - above "Folders on My Computer"), select "Folder Properties" then "Empty" cache. After you do this, your calendar data will disappear and repopulate from the exchange server. This took a while for me. Once the data reappeared, it became apparent that there were some duplicated recurring events that were cluttering up the calendar even though not previously displayed. I fixed these, then turned "sync services" back on in Entourage preferences. The "Entourage" calendar in iCal repopulated after a few minutes and I was back in business. To clean things up, I also had to delete a couple of extra "Entourage" calendars in the iCal list that had no events. Don't know if this will work for your problem but it fixed mine. Good Luck.

  • IPhone, iCal and Entourage sync issue

When syncing iPhone, my iCal is updated correctly, however the updates do not make it into Entourage. But when changes are made in Entourage, they make back it into iCal and iPhone
In iCal, the iPhone updates go into a calendar named "Calendar", the Entourage updates go into a calendar named "Entourage". These two calendars appear to be created as part of the sync process.
It appears when syncing, Entourage is only pulling up the "Entourage" calendar and ignoring the "Calendar" calendar, which contains my iPhone data. iPhone appears to pull in both calendar's data.
I've used the merge data selection when asked about syncing.
Any thoughts on how can I correct either Entourage or iCal to upload all calendars into Entourage?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Sync 2 macbook pros / iPhone / iCal / Entourage

I can't seem to get the right settings. I have a work MacBook Pro, a Home MacBook Pro and an iPhone. The work MacBook Pro has Entourage on it. When I sync all these together I end up with duplicated iCal appointments. Like it will tell me 3 or 4 times I have the same appointment at 3 on Monday. How do I set up all the iCal, Entourage, iPhone and both macs so this duplication is eliminated. Thanks in advance.
