ICal events window

The background on the events window is black, making editing quite difficult. Where do you select preferences for this?

This issue has been addressed in at least nine topics without a solution: Blacked out dock icon & more (4 Aug 08), iCal Misfunctions (19 Jul 08), Get Info Background Color Problem (19 Jul 08), ICAL colors (19 Jun 08); iCal looking messed up (17 May 08), iCal Events window (22 Mar 08), Event Info Box Reversed (17 Feb 08 - archived), ical inspector screen is black... (29 Jan 08 - archived), iCal info windows are black (8 Nov 07 - archived).
This thread has the most posts.
My symptoms:
- The event info window (double click on an event and the details pop up) has a black background making the entries unreadable until I click on the fields.
- iCal opens with Home calendar checked (my only calendar), but the calendar is empty until I uncheck it and recheck it and then the events show up.
- New calendars do not show until the application is relaunched. (Same with calendar deletions.)
- Icons are missing...for example, the Thumb Tack icon on the button to open and close the To Do drawer.
- Transparent, nearly in visible, iCal icon in the Dock.
I trashed all the iCal related .plists, caches, and even the program; replaced the calendar - exported and reimported it; reinstalled the iCal program using the original Leopard disk; reinstalled update 10.5.4 - both combo and single versions several times; did all the above in various sequences.
One of the 10.5.4 re-installations fixed the transparent Dock icon.
The Console log captures between 150 and 300 entries when I launch iCal - indicating that a lot of images aren't loading right - which would seem to correlate with the symptoms. (Excerpt below).
I would appreciate any ideas for a fix.
cheers,
emil

  • Hi, where is the new event window in ical??

Hi, what I'm trying to do is to repeat an event every week for the rest of the year in ical, so I read one post which had a picture of the new event window pop up. Where is that new event window??? It doesn't pop up for me.
    Here's what I do:
    1. I click on File, then New Event.
    2. A highlighted portion where I can write in text shows up, but then I don't know where the option to make the reminder a repeated reminder comes up.
    I have Mac OS X Version 10.5.8, I believe.
Or...how do I jiust repeat an event without going to this?? I'd just like to repeant an event.
    Any help??
    Thanks in advance,
    Bonnie

All right, never mind, I found it myself!!! You gotta double-click (press twice on mouse area) on the highlighted portion of the text that shows up on a date.
    Thanks for reading this!!!

  • How can I adjust event window size while in day view on ical?

How can I adjust the all-day event window size while in day view on ical?  I have thee all-day events, but they're just a little too big to simultaneously appear without having to scroll up/down the all-day event section.

{Ctrl + Scroll wheel} does a Page Zoom and that setting is saved domain by domain.
'''View > Zoom > Reset''' while you're viewing one of those zoomed-out pages in the SmartZone.

  • Lion 10.7.2 On both mac book pro and iMac, both with Lion 10.7.2, obtain repeated iCal event notifications from calendar or address book.  Cannot turn these off.  They repeat several times per session and every time computer is used.  How to diagnose this

Lion 10.7.2 On both mac book pro and iMac, both with Lion 10.7.2, obtain repeated iCal event notifications from calendar or address book.  Cannot turn these off.  They repeat several times per session and every time computer is used.  How to diagnose this?

First, uninstall "SuperTV" (whatever that is) according to the developer's instructions. It isn't working and it's filling the log with noise.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Ical events re-sort themselves in month view.

We have 50 clients, all running ical on snowleopard, and all connecting to a server running OSX server 10.6.4.
On the clients, especially ones with busy calendars, when you edit an event on any day, other events will shift and re-sort themselves. All day events at the top will switch places, one above the other.
This is a problem for busy users. They will end up clicking on the wrong event since the sort just happened as they move their mouse pointer and went to click.
Sometimes it's on a completely different day that the re-sort takes place. i.e. I click on an event on monday the 20th, make a note or change, and when I close the event window, I'll see two or three events on other days flip-flop.
This is happening on multiple clients, various macs, so it's not related to one bad install. Users are starting to complain.
    Has anyone else seen this?

    Yes--this is driving me crazy!
    Anyone have any advice?

  • In mail "create new ical event" has stopped appearing in ical

Please help! I love clicking on data in email to bring up the "Create New iCal Event" box, and using it to put new events into my ical calendar. But recently when I "Create New iCal Event" from an email, and click "add to iCal" the window closes but the event doesn't show up in iCal. I can still add events by clicking on a calendar date in iCal and typing them in, but the link between Mail and iCal seems to be broken. How can I fix it?
Could this be related to how Firefox recently broke? Foxfire will not save bookmarks any more, either, I click on "Bookmarks," then "Bookmark this page". The window closes but the bookmark does not save. Also, the forward/backward browser arrows no longer work on Foxfire.

Could you be more specific? What happens (or fails to happen?)

  • Link an email to an iCal event

I would like to link an email message in Mail to an iCal event. Under Lion, the only way to do this seems to be to drag the email out of Mail and into a separate folder on the hard drive. Then drag the icon of that mail message to the url section of the event in iCal. Surprisingly, there does not seem to be any way to make a direct link between a message in Mail and an iCal event. If so, this is quite a major oversight and I am keen to know if others are concerned and/or have any solutions to propose.

    Ben,
Open the event in edit mode. If you double click it and the buttons 'Edit' and 'Done' appear you need to click 'Edit', if the only button is 'Done' it is already in edit mode.
When you drag the email over the grey event edit window a plus icon with a green background should appear. Drag it until the cursor is over the word 'none' next to where it says 'url'.
If it works the text 'none' will change into a hyperlink saying 'Show in Mail…'.
Let me know how it goes.

  • HT202297 I can't drag my ical events over to the reminders list.

I can't drag my ical events over to the reminders list (that's not there anymore) like I used to be able to do. Why?

What version of iphoto? If it's iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?
    Iphoto 09 or earlier
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window +should+ open with the file selected. Does it?

  • In new event window how do I change the auto settings?

As an example of this question, each new event window always has "all day event" checked, how do I change this to be automatically unchecked?

    catknox,
Are you using Lion iCal? If so, iCal now uses data detectors for event creation. The "Month" view automatically creates an all day event unless you enter a specific time.
Here are some event creation rules from the iCal Help Center:
Click Add at the top of the iCal window or press Command (⌘)-N.Events are added automatically to your default calendar.
If you want to choose a different calendar for the event, hold down the Add button (+), and then choose a calendar.
To change your default calendar, choose iCal > Preferences, click General, and then select a calendar from the Default Calendar pop-up menu.
Enter a name, date, and time duration for the event, and then press Return. For example, you can enter “Super Bowl Party Feb 6,” “Movie with Rebecca on Friday at 7pm,” “Soccer Game on Saturday from 11am-1pm,” or “Breakfast with Jon,” and then press Return.
If you don’t enter a time duration for the event, iCal sets the event’s duration to 1 hour.
If you don’t enter any time information for the event, iCal makes the event an all-day event.
If you enter “breakfast” or “morning,” iCal sets the event to start at 9 a.m.
If you enter “lunch “ or “noon,” iCal sets the event to start at 12 p.m.
If you enter “dinner” or “night,” iCal sets the event to start at 8 p.m.
To set any other event options (for example, to set your event to repeat, add an alert, or invite others to the event), make your changes in the event’s editor, and then click Done.

  • Continuing alerts for iCal Events after canceling

    Hello everyone,
I suspect what I'm about to describe is a bug, but hopefully I'm wrong and there is a setting for this. For any iCal Events I have, which are typically listed as all day events, I get continual reminder notifications even after CANCELLING.  Anyone seeing this?  Is there a way to stop it or do you think this is a bug.
FYI, I do have calendar turned on for iCloud, but not reminders.  This happens on both my Macbook Pro and my iMac.

OK...I've found the culprit and an easy workaround.  First, Desktop Manager for Mac is the problem.  If you set any event alert reminders in iCal to "Message and Sound" you'll get both the message and the sound on your Mac, but Desktop Manager for Mac mangles this somehow when the event is synched to the BB.  The event makes it over, but when the event is selected on the BB and opened, the alert is set to "None".
To fix this, simply change all event alert reminders in iCal to "Message" (without the sound) and re-sync using Desktop Manager now the events on your BB have the same alert parameters as in iCal and their alerts now popup when scheduled and they have an audible sound.
Come on, RIM...Mac users deserve better than this.  It took you 12 years to get us a real (well almost real) Desktop Manager, so now give it the same features as you provide in the Windows Desktop Manager.  But since I know nothing in this forum ever makes it to RIM...we'll have to hope they figure this out on their own.

  • Ical events widget

I posted this both in here (since i have a 12") and in the mac os x widget forum
has anyone used the ical events widget? it makes my computer REALLY hot and i'm wondering if it's just my own isolated case. processor goes to 140 degrees with it on. i checked activity monitor and saw that ical was using 60+% of the processor and was also labeled unresponsive even though it was working fine. so i force quitted, deleted the widget, and my cpu temp drops to 117. anyone else have similar results?

THANKS a brody. You made me think hard on this and now I remember what I did with help from http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050422172929402&query=Widgetondesktop.
This is what you have to do to get the functionality I was enquiring about.
    [ Quoted from http://www.macosxhints.com ]
    "Open the Terminal and type
    defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
and press Return. Then logout and log back in again. Now debugging mode is activated. To get a widget off of the Dashboard and onto your desktop, just do the following:
Activate Dashboard by pressing F12 (or whatever key you've assigned to Dashboard).
    Begin dragging the widget.
Press F12 again, before letting up on the mouse button.
Drop the widget wherever you want it.
You can do the same thing in reverse to drag the widget back onto the Dashboard. Also of interest: while a widget is frontmost, you can press Command-R to reload it. (This may be necessary if a widget is buggy and gets messed up somehow.) There's even a nifty Core Image-based twirl effect to accompany the reload.
This isn't really a hidden hack; it's the official way of working on a widget before it's done. However, it's extremely useful -- there are certain widgets that you'd just rather see and use all the time, instead of only in Dashboard mode. Note that the widgets float above all windows, so this trick is most useful if you have some spare desktop space. To disable this mode, repeat the above command, but replace YES with NO, and then logout/login again. Note that you can also restart the Dock to make the changes take effect (the Dock controls the Dashboard)."

  • Help creating an iCal event workflow

I'm trying to create a workflow where I run & a window pops up so I can add the details & then it adds the details to iCal.
I was trying to use the 'New iCal Events' action which when run display a window where you can enter the details, but it won't work properly for me. If I run it from Automator the details I enter are added correctly to iCal, but if I run it from the workflow I saved (as an app) the details I enter don't get transferred to iCal.
Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

don't hope too much. automator bugs haven't received high priority in the past. you might want to look for a workaround using apple script.

  • My Ical events disappeared how do I restore with time machine/mountain lion?

I recently installed mountain lion.    Today my ICal events disappeared and I can't restore them with time machine.   What happened?   How do I fix it?

Did you try rebuilding the library's database file as follows:  make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Exported/emailed iCal event failed to install

I recently experimented with exporting an iCal event and then attaching its file to an email. I mailed a copy to myself to see how it would look on and work with a recipient's machine.
When I received the email, I double-clicked on the attached iCal file icon. Instead of simply importing into my calendar, the application went "wild", spewing out a lengthy series of error messages that made no sense to me, except to consistently refer to my various calendars that I maintain as iCloud accounts. The material result of dismissing these error messages was to add duplicate events ad nausem to my iCal calendar, wreaking havoc.
This serial process continued until I closed iCal, went to iCloud on my System Preferences and removed all of my iCloud calendar accounts. Then, I turned iCloud back on and all of the current calendars reinstalled themselves without the errant duplicates and without further mischief.
Can anyone tell me what is going on.
I am running Lion OSX 10.7.5 on my iMac.

    Hi Russell,
    What’s the situation now?
There would be a cause that the upgrade is running background, so a retry would fail in this situation.
You can check the action log  in C:\$Windows.~BT\source\panther\setupact.log
Check the time line to see if it is running for upgrade.

  • ICal Event Handling And Exchange

Okay. I'm having problems figuring out how iCal in Snow Leopard is handling meeting invitations. When I get a new meeting invite in Mail.app and I double-click on it, it creates an event in iCal. If I open that event, the popup gives me the option to click on "Maybe", "Accept", or "Decline". If I click on "Accept" the event window goes away and iCal comes back up.... but it doesn't appear to save my response. If I click on the event, it still shows me the same button options. This would all be fine... except for the following issue....
As long as an iCal event is in the "invitation" state, I can't change the event from it's default local calendar to the Exchange calendar. I can move it around within local calendars, but the Exchange options are not available from the pulldown menu. If I create a new event manually, then the Exchange options are available from the pulldown and I can move events to it just fine.
I can't figure out how to get invitations (1) accepted and saved as accepted and (2) moved to the Exchange calendar.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I've found a work-around that SORT of lets me function for now:
    1) Right click on the event.
    2) Select "Create Duplicate"
    3) Right-click on the new duplicate.
    4) You can now select your Exchange calendar to move it over.
    5) When you try to select the OLD event, iCal will REQUIRE that you send a notification out to the meeting invitees. This is ENTIRELY too inconvenient for me (as I work for Government and Army Colonels do NOT want my meeting spam) so I click on EDIT and then remove all the invitees and then save. This gets around the requirement to send the notice.
    6) THEN I can select the OLD event on my local calendar and delete it.
This is FAR from a good solution as it requires me to lose all the meeting attendee information AND there's something broken in the requirement to send the meeting notice out again for the duplicate.. but at least I can get events onto my Exchange calendar for now.
