ICal Find no longer works

Ever since my boot drive filled a few days ago, Find no longer works in iCal.
The Find Details pane opens, but it's always empty.
I suspect some index or DB got corrupted, but have no idea how to reset/refresh/restart it.

Better get it "unfilled", your OS needs that space for Virtual Memory. Rule of thumb at least 15% free space.
Use WhatSize or OmniDisksweeper can help you find what's hogging your disk space.

  • Accessing NFS mounted share in Finder no longer works in 10.5.3+

I have setup an automounted NFS share previously with Leopard against a RHEL 5 server at the office. I had to go through a few loops to punch a hole through the appfirewall to get the share accessible in the Finder.
A few months later when I returned to the office after a consultancy stint and upgrades to 10.5.3 and 10.5.4 the NFS mount no longer works. I have investigated it today and I can't get it to run even with the appfirewall disabled.
I've been doing some troubleshooting, and the interaction between the statd, lockd and perhaps the portmap seem a bit fishy, even with the appfirewall disabled. Both the statd and lockd complains that they can not register; lockd once and statd indefinitely.
    Jul 2 15:17:10 ySubmarine com.apple.statd[521]: rpc.statd: unable to register (SM_PROG, SM_VERS, UDP)

Jul 2 15:17:10 ySubmarine com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.statd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
... and rpcinfo -p gets connection refused unless I start portmap using the launchctl utility.
This may be a bit obscure, and I'm not exactly an expert of NFS, so I wonder if someone else stumbled across this, and can point me in the right direction?

Sorry for my late response, but I have finally got around to some trial and error. I can mount the share using mount_nfs (but need to use sudo), and it shows up as a mounted disk in the Finder. However, when I start to browse a directory on the share that I can write to, I end up with the lockd and statd failures.

I guess that the Finder somehow triggers file locking over NFS.

  • Option-drag contacts to Finder no longer works in Mavericks

In all versions of Contacts and Address Book you could select multiple contacts, hold down the option key, then click and drag them into a folder, which would result in a separate vCard for each contact. If you did not hold down Option prior to dragging, all contacts were combined into a single vCard (eg: John Smith and 10 others.vcf).
I just installed Mavericks and now the option-drag method no longer works. As I drag the contacts to a folder everything looks like it is working as normal, except that when I drop, nothing shows up in the finder, the folder remains empty. If I don't hold down the option key, it works as normal and a single vCard is created for multiple contacts. Dragging one at a time also still works.
I would like to know if others are experiencing this as well. I assume this must be a bug, as without this ability the only way to export multiple separate vCards (that I know of) would be to drag them one at a time.

It's frustrating when Apple removes a feature you're used to using...  But when they close a door....
    Do the following:
    1) Open the Contacts Application and select all the contacts you want to export
    2) Open the Automator application and create a New Workflow
    3) Select "Contacts" from the Library panel at the left
    4) Drag the action "Get Selected Contact Items" from the middle panel and select "Get Selected PEOPLE" from the drop-down menu.
    5) Drag the action "Export vCards" from the middle panel and select "Export INDIVIDUAL VCARDS" from the first drop-down menu and select a destination FOLDER from the second drop-down menu. Just create a new folder on your Desktop and select it, you don't want to save directly on the Desktop as this will put all your individual vcards there.
    6) Run the workflow by hitting the PLAY button at the top-right of the window.
Optionally, you can save the workflow for future use, but the best practice would be to use the Get Selected Items and not the Get Specified Items, as the later would only export the contacts you already have there and not the new ones, I believe.
In any case, there's the window!
    Rick.

  • Show In Finder no longer working for dock icons

When I context-click / right-click an item on my dock, followed by the Options -> Show in Finder, it no longer does anything. It has previously opened the Finder and revealed the item, as it is supposed to, but now, it does not work. Has anyone encountered this and / or know of a resolution for it? Thanks in advance for your help

try logging out/in or restarting. if that does not help delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and log out/in. your dock, spaces and exposé will be reset to the defaults. see if it works now.

  • Lion 10.7.4 Finder no longer working

    Hi all
I am posting here as a last resort and i have looked at all the posts i could find on this and still no joy. I will outline what i have done to date below and hopefully someone here can help.
    The problem
Logged off two days ago and when i logged back in, whenever I tried to open finder to look at any drives, either internal/ external or files it just hangs with a "not responding". I didnt do any updates during the period on any software
Also programs like Itunes also hang with a not responding and dont seem . So i thought Firewall? Permissions? Hardware? Lion problem, User account config problem?. One other wierd thing that happens is the ethernet server connection keeps resetting. I can access the internet via web browser and software updates are fine. Firewall is open.
I have not updated software to 10.7.5 as i dont think it will solve the problem
So far i have done the following.
Disk repair/permissions etc - All ok
Disk repair /Permissions etc from install disk - all ok
Checked admin user and harddrive permissions and couldnt see anything there
Safe boot start up - Problem is not there and seems fine - So assumed user config issue or software
Hardware Check (Just in case) - All Ram OK disk images ok. Graphic card ok
Guest Account- logged in and problem exists.
Deleted user account started a new one- Problem exists
    PRAM reset-  problem still there
Rolled back to earlier version from Time machine - Problem still there
Reinstalled Lion from backup HD and problem still there.
I have not deleted Plists yet as im a bit hesitant but not sure if thats the problem
So as you can see appart from multi wiping the HD and a complete reinstall im running out of options and i was really wondering if anyone here could help

Ok a quick update after spending a bit more time on this and countless hours looking through the logs i think ive found out what the problem is
So deleting the Plists worked a dream and also reseting the permissions whilst in lion recovery mode also worked.
CMD R whilst start up, select utilities, open terminal & type in passwordreset. This will give you a screen but dont change any passwords. Just go to the bottom and reset the folder permisions of the users.
However in resetting all of this and reinstalling lion there is somehow now another  problems when i now try and access my NAS folder im getting these logs with MDS running hot but im not clear why spotlight is trying index an external NAS harddrive it would seem its creating probs with the Kernal but not sure , anyone else understand this better than me?

  • DVD burning no longer working.

    Hi there,
I am not quite sure if it is since the 10.4.9 update or the re-install I did a month ago, but DVD burning with Toast 7 or the Finder no longer work.
I can burn CD's with my internal NEC DVD RW ND-3520A drive and I can play DVD's just fine too, but when I try to burn a disc I get this error:
"Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (Error code 0x80020022"
I am using Phillips DVD-R media that I have used before, the firmware on the DVD drive is at 1.04 there is a new Firmware updater but you need a Win2K machine.
But the Firmware update has been out for a while and I have been burning happily until now.
Anyone on the forum have an idea as to what the issue is?
    All the best,
    Anil.

    Hi Dak,
Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately I have been using Patchburn for a few years now. I had to reinstall my system because of some dodgy software from Vodafone. I upgraded to 10.4.9 from 10.4.8, just like every good OS X user.
It burns fines with CD's it just seems to be a problem with DVD's, maybe it is a media issue, might try a few other brands and see if that helps. again thanks for your advice.
    Anil.

  • OT: Find function in Finder no longer Finds... Help!

I know this has nothing to do with Logic, but I trust you guys' advice... so here goes...
I tried installing this new HP printer driver, and it proved to be problematic (for various reasons that I'll spare y'all the details of). The most notable side effect of all of this is that a file search using CMD-F from the Finder no longer works. It will not find any matches for anything, not the letter "a", not "Logic", nothing. There's a little wheel that spins in the lower RH corner of the finder window itself while the search is underway, but all it does is spin.
Is this a harbinger of doom? Any thoughts or advice?

    Oh boy, iSchwartz-
I seen the same thing 6 ways to sunday with hp, first I had an hp all in one that doubled the setup manager and wouldn't install proper until I removed it from the hp apps. folder>utilities. Then a 48/90 scanner, this may be closer to your sitchu it used a file manager that completely disregarded my system prefs[energy saver schedule and processor speed].
So taking that manager out of application support>hp is probably close to what you've got to do look for needless plist files in app support or the hp apps folder.
I never get why hp is so sketchy this way, but it's common.

  • Notify no longer working with find friends app!

On find friends app the notify button no longer works and myself and everyone I'm trying to set the notify button has the latest update "6.1.2". Any one else having the same problem?

I didn't realize until I went to a class to lecture in front of a couple hundred students that what worked on Friday no longer worked on Monday.  (I upgraded to iOS 5 over the weekend.)  My iPad with lecture slides was plugged in 25 feet away.  I finally recruited a student to tap the iPad screen when I needed the next slide.  A nightmare.  What is usually slick and seamless was a wreck.
Here's my deal.  My remote app works fine at home where my iPod Touch and iPad are on the same wifi network.  At school they're on different networks for some reason.  Bluetooth doesn't work anywhere.  So Apple needs to find this bug and fix it.  I can't believe whoever is responsible for this didn't test this out before they released iOS 5.  Sheesh.

Ok so I happened to figure it out while on the phone to apple support. Even though the guy was very nice, I think I knew more than him! He was explaining very basic resolution principles I played about. I had the second option in displays resolution. All I did was unplug the HDMI cable, click on 'best for display' then plugged the HDMI in and my resolution on the normal monitor changed to the normal blue, then went black momentarily and then changed to a strange resolution but another window appeared that said SONY BRAVIA HDMI at the top! Hey presto! Don't know why it didn't do it yesterday - I probably left the HDMI cable in or something! Oh well. Problem solved!

  • ICal sync from iPhone 3G no longer works with both MacBooks?

    Hi Group:
I've got an iPhone 3G, a previous gen MBP and a white MB, all running the latest software updates. For the past several months I have been able to enter iCal events on my MBP, sync to the iPhone using iTunes, and then sync the iPhone to the MB. For some reason I can't guess, that no longer works, and iCal events are not being transferred from the iPhone to my MB iCal app. Did this happen with the iPhone 3.0 software update (the timing seems about right)? I called Apple Care last night and they said only a .Me account would return that functionality, but denied this had anything to do with the iPhone 3.0 update. In fact, the rep said it never should have worked in the first place.
FWIW, here's the error messasge iTunes generates:
"iTunes could not sync calendar events to the iPhone because an error occurred while sending data from the iPhone."
That's the exact wording, and it doesn't really make perfect sense, either. So, is there a workaround for this, or a third-party app, perhaps? Did Apple make this change just to sell more .Me accounts? Finally, is there maybe an automated way to sync the iCal events between the MBP and MB across my Time Capsule network? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
    Dean

****, that was a brilliant solution. To be clear, what was happening is that I could no longer sync calendars from the iPhone to the MB, but never lost that ability on the MBP. I would not have guessed your solution, as I've never even opened the iSync app, and had no idea it was in any way involved. Thanks, and I wonder if there's some way Apple could add this solution to their database for the Apple Care reps?

  • Finder's 'Search Contents' no longer working

I used to be able to use this to search for keywords in text files. Not the file-name, but the actual contents within the text file. It's no longer working. I'm wondering if perhaps FileVault is the problem? Can anyone else cross-verify this, or suggest possible solutions?

    OS Lucinity wrote:
Also, .as files are actionscript docs.
Unfortunately extensions alone are not always unique file type identifiers, especially short ones that may have had origins in the "dot plus three" restrictions of DOS. OS X uses multiple criteria to make a 'best guess' at the file type, including filename extensions, Finder info, & even OS 9 style type & creator codes if present. It compares this info to type identifiers in application bundles registered with launch services (which determines which if any apps appear in the "Open with" Finder contextual menu popup & the choices in the "Get Info" window).
Thus, what Finder shows for "Kind" can vary depending on the applications installed & the metadata associated with the file at the time of creation or re-saving it.
Also, some apps include mdimporters in their bundles or installers. It may be that the mdimporter of the 'parent' app of the actionscript docs (if included) isn't playing well with the latest Leopard update, or that the file type isn't being recognized by launch services properly. (This is a simplification of a complex topic that frankly I do not completely understand as well as I would like.)
Anyway, it may be that an update to the app, reinstalling it, or rebuilding the launch services database may cause the contents of these files to be indexed again without need of a third party importer. Or, the third party importer may be a simpler or more effective solution for you.
I wish I could be more definite about this, but perhaps someone else with a better grasp of the topic can suggest the best way to go.

  • Group calendars on 10.6.4 client machines no longer work with iCal Server

After updating 2 client machines to 10.6.4 I realized my group calendars no longer work in iCal.
I get "Server Responded With an Error" on all my group calendars, on both machines.
Preferences>Accounts>Server Path reveles the server path has reverted back to a GUID "/principals/_uids_/GUID string/" .
I change it back to "/principals/_uids_/wiki-GroupName/" and get it working again, but if I quit iCal and restart it again reverts back to the GUID.
I've trashed all calendars in ~/Library/Calendars, and the Prefs. I also tried "/principals/wikis/GroupName/", but again it reverts.
I booted to my 10.6.3 clone and have no problems with the group calendars there.
    (I'm running 10.6.4 Server)
Is anyone else having this issue?
    Any ideas?

Are you asking for an example of how to use calendarservermanageprincipals? While the tool is designed to help you configure privileges on resources and locations, it works fine for users. So I created a new user in Workgroup Manager to represent my Marketing department's calendars. I named this user "sharedmarketing".
Then, I wanted to give staff read-only access to the calendar and give Marketing write access, so I executed these two commands:
    sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --add-write-proxy groups:marketing users:sharedmarketing
    sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --add-read-proxy groups:staff users:sharedmarketing
I then imported the content from the Marketing Wiki calendar into this calendar and that was it!
If I logged in directly to the sharedmarketing account (not necessary), and looked how the account was set to be delegated, it properly showed group names:
There is no way to configure it like this using the iCal GUI, and this was I always felt that the management of privileges was the biggest obstacle in setting up iCal Server in this proper, supported fashion.
Then, from the client, I can naturally access those group calendars:
This is SO much easier to setup and maintain as each user only needs to have their ONE iCal account configured and they can just add the necessary groups, which is WAY easier than supplying users with crazy wiki-calendar URLs.

Not the same symptoms, but I noticed that after a few days of running great, odd things started happening on my iMac. The first thing was that when I would boot the Mac up for the first time in the morning, it would boot into single user mode. I have the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, so I know there's no way keys are being held down.
The other symptom was that Microsoft Outlook 2011 would hang on launch. It would get stuck on the "Setting Up Identities..." phase. Rebuilding the Outlook database would help until the next time I shut the iMac down.
Also a couple of times it got to the Desktop after a boot, but not everything was working correctly and some startup items didn't load.
The iMac also kept booting into single user mode on the first boot.
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion, and I thought that fixed both problems, until the next morning. Now I just don't shut the Mac down. I can close Outlook, and it launches in a couple of seconds.
So it would appear that something is becoming corrupt when OS X is shut down. If I don't shut it down, it's fine.
