ICal freezes when attempting to change any appointments

I use iCal @ my business to schedule all of my appointments. Recently when I have tried to adjust any of the previously scheduled appointments iCal freezes and locks the entire computer up. If anyone has any suggestions that would be amazing, seeing as I have to use iCal on a daily basis this is a HUGE issue. I have downloaded and installed all updates and restarted the computer numerous times.

In searching I tried a couple of other things... mainly turning off .mac syncing, turn off the birthday calendar, unsubscribing all of my calendars and un-publishing my calendars. None of this worked either. I tried to export my calendars and was able to export some of the calendars and it froze on a couple exports.
I got frustrated so I called applecare today and they ran me through a battery of tests:
1. Opening ical in a newly created account and playing around with it that way. Everything worked fine in there. I imported a couple of calendars that I could export, as I stated above, and they seemed to be working fine too.
2. Back on my account I deleted the "cache" folder in my Home>Library folder, the "calendar cache" files in Home>Library>Calendar folder (I had 3 of them), and then deleted the "com.apple.ical..." preference files in the Home>Library>Preferences folder (I had 3 different ical pref files). Then started up ical and had the same freezes as before.
3. Removed the "Calendars" folder from Home>Library to my desktop and then started up iCal. All of my calendars appeared in the calendar menu on the left, but no events were added (except for some subscribed events that obtained the events from the internet). Adding new events to each calendar worked fine and I had no freezes either.
The apple guy came to the conclusion that something was corrupt with the content itself not the program or the system. This really ***** because since the move to 10.4 or 10.5 they changed how calendars are stored in the Calendars folder. It is no longer just stored as a .ics file but a bunch of alpha-numeric folders are created that have no real identifying characteristics to decipher which calendar event is which.
He suggested I install an older calendar folder from my a .mac update (no good because it has updated since the freezing began), or use Time Machine. Thankfully I started using Time Machine awhile ago and have several backups of my calendars folder.
So I took a backup from before the freezing happened... 3 days ago. I have lost a bunch of entries that I am trying to reenter right now. But so far everything seems to be working alright. I will update when I get everything back up to normal.
I am also deleting my entries to my calendar that occurred 3 years ago to try and weed out some of the old events I don't reference to anymore. I hope this post helps you out.

  • Appleworks freezes when attempting to change a data base field

In a data base I created, trying to change a number in one field will freeze Appleworks. A number can be entered, but any attempt to delete, add to or change the data in that one field causes a freeze. This does not happen in any other field in this data base, nor in any other document, as far as I know. This is a fairly recent problem, and did not occur when the data base was first created.
Is there a way to fix this without losing all the data in that field?
    Thanks!

    Hi Yvan,
I'm sorry, but your link did not help my particular problem.
Can I make a list of the "freezing" field and an identifying second field, delete the problem field, and then re-enter the data in a newly created field? Being efficient (read lazy) I was trying to get away from having to re-enter all the data. There are only 384 records, but the thought of redoing even one field is mind-numbing.
    Anyone else have a suggestion???
    Thanks!

  • Any ideas how to deal with "An error occurred when attempting to change modules."

Trying to use Lightroom 5; get this message every time I begin. "An error occurred when attempting to change modules," and that's all the further the app will go. Very sad, but WHAT IS THE ERROR? I've uninstalled and reinstalled it four or five times -- a couple through Creative Cloud/Application Manager and a couple by direct download .dmg. I've removed preferences, etc., reinstalled Creative Cloud Desktop, repaired permissions, appealed to the Lord, wished on a dandelion. Nothing.
Searching for the error I find no information anywhere in the last week or month, and beyond that nothing that applies to version 5.
I'm on a 2012 Macbook Air (Intel i5), OS 10.8.4, 4GB RAM, plenty of disk space and Camera Raw 8.1 installed if that matters.
    Little help? Thanks.

  • Another "An error occurred when attempting to change modules" error

    Hello all:
After using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom on Mac OSX trouble free for the past 6 months, I opened up Lightroom today and received the following error: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules." I had not made any changes in between when it worked normally and when the error started to occur. I beleive the last thing I did before this error occurred was to go into the Print Module.
Other information--I keep all my RAW .NEF files on an external Firewire (800) 750 GB drive. This is on Mac OS X 10.5 running Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.3 and also with 1.4.1. I'm running an iMac 20" with dual-core 2.2 Ghz Intel processors and 4 GB of RAM. I have around 25k images total.
When I noticed this problem, I was on Lightroom 1.3. I immediately upgraded to 1.4.1, which did not solve the problem. I have also tried many suggestions in the forums including uninstalling the application and removing the .plist file.
I thought I had come up with a solution by creating a new catalog, then importing the former into it. While this seems to work immediately after the import process, as soon as I close it, the problem manifests itself again.
More details that may or (likely) may not help:
    - Going to the Develop and Print Modules gives me no problems. However, when I click on Library, Slideshow, or Web, I see the error.
    - I upgraded my Mac to the latest patch level after observing this error to no avail.
So it looks like my choices are to create a new file and reimport every single time, or lose all of the work I've done for the past 6 months on thousands of images.
Can anyone please help???? I promise to post the solution when we fix this darn thing so others may benefit. I'd be happy to run through any troubleshooting that y'all would suggest outside of switching to a Canon.
    Thanks!!!!
    Matt

I'd first check for the existence of a file ending in .lock, which should be present when LR is in use, but if it exists when LR is quit, it can cause problems, and should be deleted.
    Please post back your results.

  • I have Lightroom 5 installed on my MacBook Air but when I try to open the program I receive the message "An error occurred when attempting to change modules".  I uninstalled, emptied trash and re-installed but I continue to get the same message.

I have Lightroom 5 installed on my iMac which I downloaded (uploaded?) to my MacBook Air (via wi-fi) but unlike the iMac, I'm unable to use the program on the MacBook Air.  When I open the program on the iMac and click 'file', (as people using the program would know) there are 21 options - import pics, export, etc, etc - however, in the version on the MacBook Air, opening 'file' gives me four options - New Catalogue, Open Catalogue, Page Setup and Printer - and with that comes the pop-up message "An error occurred when attempting to change modules".  Any ideas please?

A forum thread from 3 years ago talking about LR 1.x which had this problem seems to need permissions fixed or new folders created with the corrected permissions.  You might try doing a repair permissions for your user and/or run LR as an administrator user.  I am a PC person so cannot tell you exactly how to do that.

  • An error occurred when attempting to change modules Lightroom 5 CC

I've seen other users pose this question but haven't seen any solutions that work for me.  I get the error: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules" when I open up Lightroom 5 on one user, but on another user it opens up fine.  I've tried moving and trashing preferences, uninstalling and reinstalling the program.  It's the same whether I open an existing catalog or try to open Lightroom while creating a new project.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This occured after updating to Mavericks on a 2011 iMac.  All other Creative Cloud apps seem to have installed just fine.

    Hi 99jon,
Many thanks for that. Had been going through this list yesterday and now again today:
Ref  Solution 1: Lightroom is at its latest update
Ref  Solution 2: It's interesting how I cannot find the Preferences file anywhere on my mac. (new mac pro, OS 10/9.2) . . .
Ref  Solution 3: Lightroom doesn't allow me to do anything after the error message appears
Ref  Solution 4: don't have any Nik Software plug-ins
Ref  Solution 5: checked permissions and changed all to "Read & Write" - makes no difference
Ref  Solution 6: I don't have a different user account on my mac.
Not sure what else to do.

  • An error occurred when attempting to change modules.

Loaded LR on my iMac, tried to copy & use a catalogue from W7 P/C. Now get "An error occurred when attempting to change modules."  when opening LR. Tried a variety of on-line suggestions, HELP. NB too much hassle with all the other apps to start a new user with such as Adobe and Microsoft.

Hi, I¹ve been through it again to ensure I¹ve not forgot things. Completely
removed Lightroom and all files I can find, etc and reloaded. Some tedious
result. Step 6 is too time consuming at the moment for me, too many things
on the go since I¹m about to go on holiday and on return I shall need
Lightroom on this iMac. Any clues? This iMac had Mavericks from new,
uploaded to Yosemite and then loaded Photoshop CC, Lightroom etc and get
    this damned problem.
Reading around the web I¹m not the only one with this issue, to suggest a
new user a/c is a soft option without resolving the issue.
I hope an expert from Adobe can resolve this,
Regards, George (retired IT Manager and IT Systems Project Manager)

For such a big company .. there isn't any chat option to get to someone to talk to  !!!

Just because you are the only user on the computer doesn't mean you are the administrator.
Also, the fact that you are being asked to re-enter your serial number each time you start means that it is not being remembered because something is either preventing it from being written to you disk or (less likely) something is erasing it. This does suggest that you lack certain permissions to make changes to your computer. Not only to save your serial number, but to have access to the Lightroom files needed to change modules (they are just plug-ins within Lightroom).
Try creating a new user account and run Lightroom from there (making sure that it is part of the Administrator group).
To get to chat support, you have to choose the options:

    Thank you in advance

Actually i did check the site for similar questions and found one without unfortunately any solutions, therefore and as i am about to embark a vessel, due to my job Captain in Merchant Marine Ships, I re posted this matter hoping to have a solution from somebody in ADOBE keeping in mind that i never hesitate to make the purchase of the software believing that i would not have this kind of problems with a company such as ADOBE.
Thanks again and apologise if my post is duplicated, however i do need a solution.

  • 2011 iMac: An error occurred when attempting to change modules

    Hello,
Just got a new 2011 iMac.  Installing both 3.4 and 3.3, after completely removing all data, constantly results in "
An error occurred when attempting to change modules"
I've tried removing the .plist as others have suggested, but that has not worked.
    Any advice would be great.

    FIXED
    I did two things:
    1.  I deleted the files for "Portraiture for Lightroom".
    2.  Installed on a different computer and copied the "Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom" and ".../Camera Raw" directories.
    After reinstalling, it worked.

Lightroom trial doesn't show complete menu selections or import button.  Also get error message on launch:  An error occurred when attempting to change modules.  I am unable to find/see the following file to try renaming the SLCache and SLStore files:  System Library/Application Support/Adobe.  Any ideas?  I only have 16 days left on the trial and have been unable to get it to work on my Macbook Pro.  This is all I am seeing after Lightroom opens.  Thanks!

Thanks to both of you for attempting to help.  I finally figured out what was wrong . . . it was a Permissions problem.  Very frustrating, but after scouring the troubleshooting tips I finally found the one that solved my problem.  I had to add a User and give it Read/Write privileges to Lightroom.  The file I had to add the User to was Hidden on my Mac, so that added an even bigger challenge to the mystery.  Only a few days left on my trial version!  I hope I have time to try it out!

  • Why does ical freeze when I swipe?

About 90% of the time iCal will freeze up the whole system, except the mouse, when I use the two finger swipe between months. iCal freezes even with or without any events in the calendar and it happens no matter which User is loged in. I sync via MobileMe, but discontinued the sync and erased all events to see if that made a difference. It didn't. I've deleted iCal caches in the Library/Calendars & Library/Caches/com.apple.iCal folder thinking that might solve the problem. It didn't. I find it hangs when in Month & Year views. Day & Week seem to be ok.
I'm currently running a new MacBook Air that had Lion preinstalled when I purchased it. I did migrate my programs via a Time Machine backup when I set up the MBA from an iMac that was also running Lion. I'm out of ideas any sugestions would be helpful. Thanks.

To reinstall Lion without the disk, you're going to need to do a reinstall using Apple's new recovery mode called "Lion Recovery". You can read more in depth about Lion's recovery here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/161088/2011/07/hands_on_lion_recovery_mode.html
When I reinstalled Lion this is what I did - it took about 1.2 hours:
    1) Back up your computer
    2) Make sure you have a good internet connection because OS X Lion will be downloaded via the internet. It is about 4 GB in size, so it will take a while (45 min with a good broadband connection)
    3) Have your Apple ID/Mac App Store ID & Password handy - you will be asked for it
    4) Restart the machine while holding down Command+R untill you see the spinning wheel
    5) Navigate to Reinstall Mac OS X and click Continue.
    6) Follow the promps to reinstall. This will do an archive and reinstall meaning that when the machine restarts your system should look the same and nothing should be deleted. Just for insurance though, make a back up before doing the reinstall.
    7) Your computer should finish the install by itself and restart when completed. This should replace any corrupt files in iCal (or any other applcation for that matter) and you should be up in running in less than 1.5 hours.
Check out the Macworld article for more in depth information about Lion's recovery modes.
    I hope this helps.
