ICal hangs on launch

I recently changed some hardware in my computer, and after I rebooted, the clock was reset to 1969. iCal was set to launch automatically on login. I reset the clock and later rebooted. When iCal launched again, it showed today on the calendar, popped up an empty alarm, and became unresponsive. It now does this every time I launch it, just sitting there with the spinning beach ball. Is there any way to fix this?
As a last resort, can I just throw out my current calendars? Where are they stored? I did a command line 'find' command for everything ending in ".ics" but that didn't turn up a single document.

willowdemayo,
Try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find that Library folder, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart.
Next, make sure that you are not connected to the internet. Then go to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Use the same method as listed above to get to the correct Library Folder. Log out/in, or restart and check iCal for functionality.

  • If iCal doesn't launch/display properly

Some general things to check for and do when iCal won't launch or doesn't display calendars/events/todos properly in Tiger. Try these things in order and make sure you understand each step fully before you start it :
    0.
    Backup your iCal data.
If you can, open iCal and go to the File menu and choose Back up Database... to save a copy of your calendar data to your Desktop, just in case something goes wrong.
(You should be doing this regularly anyway
    1.
Is the problem with the Application or your user's data?
Make a new user account on your computer, and log in as that user. Open iCal as the new user. If you are still having the same problems it is likely that the problem is with the application and you should re-install it, if not the problem is with the data and you should move on to step 2.
To re-install iCal you will need your Tiger installer disk. On the installer disk go to System> Installation> Packages> (you'll need to scroll down to see the System folder). In here there is iCal.pkg, double click this to install iCal.
If this fixes your problem there is no need to do the following.
    2.
    Refresh your preference files.
There are some preference files related to iCal in your user's Library > Preferences. These are called:
    com.apple.iCal.alarmsCache.plist
    com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist
    com.apple.iCal.helper.plist
    com.apple.iCal.plist
Quit iCal and move these files to your desktop. When you start iCal they will be re-created in the Preferences folder with the default values as needed. This does not affect your calendar data, just preference choices.
You should go into iCal preferences and make any changes you want to your preferences after doing this.
If this solves your problem delete the copies on your Desktop, there is no need to do the following.
    3.
a: If iCal launches and you can see the calendar list:
    Check the calendars in turn.
In iCal uncheck all the calendars in the list. You can do this by Command-Clicking one calendar's check box.
Then do the following with each calendar in turn: Check the calendar's check box and see if your problems still exist. If iCal seems to be ok, then uncheck the check box and select the next calendar. If the symptoms still exist then this calendar is probably corrupted.
If you find a corrupted calendar in iCal, select it in the calendar list and from the File menu choose Export.. and export a copy of the calendar to your Desktop. Still in iCal, from the Edit menu choose Delete to remove the calendar from iCal. Then from the File menu choose Import... and select the 'Import an iCal file', find the calendar file you saved to your Desktop and import it.
    Go to step 4.
b: If iCal does not launch or you can't see the calendar list, it's a bit more involved:
Using the Finder to remove the data and replace it in turn.
Make sure iCal is not running, then go to your user's Library > Application Support > iCal> Sources folder, and copy this entire folder to your Desktop.
Go back to your user Library > Application Support> iCal> Sources. In this folder there will be one folder for each of your iCal calendars. These have long alpha-numeric names. Open these folders in turn and delete the file corestorage.ics in each one.
Open iCal. It should launch now, but there will be no events/todos and each calendar will have an exclamation mark by it.
Close iCal and repeat the following for each folder in iCal's Sources folder: (I found this easiest to do if you open both Sources folders next to each other in Finder's List View) From the copy you made to the Desktop, move the corestorage.ics file back into the correct folder in your Library> Application Support> iCal> Sources, and open iCal. If iCal is launching and functioning ok then the data in this calendar is good and you can move on to the next calendar.
If the symptoms you originally had have returned, then this calendar is corrupted.
With the corrupted calendar, move the relevant corestorage.ics file back to the correct sub-folder on your Desktop> Sources folder. In this folder will be a file called Info.plist. Open this file in a text editor, and look for the line that contains <key>Title</key>. The following line contains the title of the affected calendar between string tags (e.g. <string>Home</string>). Open iCal and with the calendar of this name, click the red exclamation mark and choose 'Reset' from the resulting dialog. Quit and re-open iCal. In iCal, make sure the same calendar is selected in the calendar list and drag the corestorage.ics file onto iCal's main window. (I got warning dialogs about unsafe alarms - I went with keeping the alarms.) This should clean up your calendar's data.
    4.
    Reset sync history.
If you have sync-ed your calendar data (either with .Mac iSync or third party apps.) there may be a corruption in the data stored by Sync Services which will be passed back into iCal when it syncs next.
Open iSync and from it's preferences select 'Reset Sync History' and in the confirmation dialog choose 'Reset Sync History' again.
I hope this will be of help to anyone having these types of problems. This (obviously) is not intended to be complete solution for every problem you'll come accross in iCal.
Please, feel free to post and correct my errors.
    Thanks
    John M

    Hi Nancy,
    > When I go into LIbrary>Application Support> there is now no ical.
Hmm, looks like you are having some problems there. (You are looking in the Library in your Home folder aren't you?) Were able to make a backup .icbu file as I suggested in point 0 above? If so you might want to open iCal and select File> Revert to Database Backup... and revert to the data you had before doing this, and start over again.
Otherwise, do a Spotlight search for 'iCal' and look at all the folders returned titled iCal. The most likely explanation is that you have inadvertently moved the iCal folder from your user's Library> Application Support to somewhere else on your harddrive. If this is so move it back.
Where exactly were you in the process? You say step 4, that is about re-setting iSync.
You say you moved the 'corestorage.ics' file to the Trash (and then emptied the Trash). Are there still corestorage.ics files in every folder in Sources on your Desktop?
    > I still have the sources file on my desktop.
Keep it there. You might want to re-name it 'Sources Old'.
    > when I click on the desktop sources folder and try and go into plist it is coming up as an itunes doc and attemptint to open with itunes
You seem to have plists associated with iTunes for some reason. To see the file's contents Control-Click one of the plist files and choose 'Open with' from the contexual menu and open it with TextEdit.
Please let me know how you get on.
    Best wishes

Long story short: Simply get CC for teams. At 500 bucks a year it's a steal and those 5 licenses in the base package (or was it 10 even?) cover all your computers, at least the 3 ones you mentioned. For system requirements refer to the individual product pages.

  • IPhoto 9.3 hangs on launch

    Hi,
I have a problem opening iPhoto and I've exhausted every diagnostic measure I can think of.
The problem is that when I launch iPhoto it hangs.
If I open it normally it tells me I need to update my library and presents a dialog with 'cancel' or 'update'. At that point it hangs- I can't click either of the options.
If I open it holding down OPTION then it asks me what library I want to use.... and hangs without letting me select an option.
If I open it holding down CMD-OPTION then it presents me with a set of diagnostic options...and hangs before I can select any of them.
I have tried repairing permissions & verifying the disk- no problems found and still hangs on launch
I have tried removing the plist preference file out of the ~/Library/Preferences folder- still hangs on launch
I have tried deleting the iPhoto 9.3 app from the Apps folder and reinstalling it using the Mac App Store- still hangs on launch.
There's no message in the console about iPhoto crashing. It's obviously not a photo library problem as it crashes before it even opens the library and it can't be the app itself as I've re-downloaded it. I presume something external to iPhoto is having an issue but I have no way of finding out what that is.
Anyone got any good diagnostic steps I can take?

Hi, not sure if your able to help me, but I have the same problem with iPhoto.  I suspect, like u did, it hass something to do with another app.  Mail crashes every time I try and open it too.  alas restarting my mac has not helped.  Any ideas???

  • ICal won't launch in Leopard

After installing Leopard earlier tonight iCal won't launch. Whenever I try to open it I immediately get an "unexpectedly quit" error message. I've repaired the permissions in disk utility but that didn't seem to do anything. Any help would be much appreciated. I depend on iCal.

Look for files in a com.apple.ical...plist format. trash them and restart iCal.

  • Developer Server 6.0 hanging when launched from Netscape 4.6

Hi, simple question to ask about OAS and Developer Server.
My Developer Server 6.0 hanging when launched from Netscape 4.61,
    I am currently running...
Pentium PII 200Mz running NT sp5
Forms Server version 6.0.5.31.0 (Patch 3 applied)
    OAS version 4.0.7.1.0 (Patch applied)
    Jinitiator 1.1.7.18
    Netscape 4.61 browser
I have all the latest versions of everything that is available,
    I have followed the instructions.
I successfully connect to the OAS admin utility and have setup
all the virtual to physical directory mappings under the default
listener www. I successfully start all website OAS services.
I have Forms server successfully started up as a process
    listening on port 9000.
I have two statics html files created:
    a) with Jinititator 1.1.7.18
The very first time I connected to this static html file it
installed Jinitiator as expected. The Forms server splashscreen
    then appears.
Jinitiator then starts up successfully, no errors appear in the
Java console. This has proved I am talking to the listener and
my virtual directory mappings are working.
At this point there is a lot of disk activity and then all
stops, the splashscreen remains and appears in the discussion
    area:
    FRM-9999 cannot access "koala.ilaco.gov.bo:9000" and
    a series of java exceptions
I am pointing to the correct java directories (I think)

message on the status bar saying...

    Can you help ?
If you know the answer, please let me know as soon as
    posible.
    Thanks for the answer....

    My server configuration is:
Compaq PC, with Pentium II, the software is:
    - Windows NT, with Service Pack 5
    - Oracle Application Server, v.4.0.7.1.0 Enterprice Edition,
    pathset 1
    - Developer Server v.6 patchset 3

Now, I can connect with this process, with the following line:
telnet koala 9000. The listener is working now.
I tried to work with my (NonCartride-static html)forms60 form on
WEB without Jinitiator, but I couldn't.
With Netscape, in the status bar: Applet
    oracle.forms.engine.Main can3t stop ERROR
With IE5, I get the splash screen and after the forms is hanged.
    If I use Jinitiator:
With Netscape, in the status bar: Oracle Jinitiato: applet
oracle.forms.engine.Main inited then form is hanged.
With IE5, I get the splash screen and after that, the screen
freezes and looks like the form is hanged.
    Any further suggestions on this?

  • Ical will not launch (OS Mavericks)

    Hello
I am using OS Mavericks (10.9.1) on my 2009 MBP.  I tried opening iCal today (as I normally would, by clicking the icon in the dock).  The icon bounces once and nothing happens.  I tried finding a solution online. One user suggested removing the Preferences plist for ical, which I did. Still, iCal did not launch. Then, another user suggested removing ical and reinstalling.  As I have the disks for Snow Leopard, I reinstalled iCal.
When I try to launch iCal from the Application folder, I now receive the following message:  "You can't use this version of the application "iCal" with this version of OS X.  You have "iCal" 4.0."
Now what?  Any suggestions? Many thanks!

To clarify, if you're running Mavericks, there is no iCal. It was replaced by Calendar.
The Calendar app in Mavericks is not the same app as the iCal app in Snow Leopard. And, as you've already found out, the iCal app from Snow Leopard won't run in Mavericks.
If you deleted the Calendar app form Mavericks, the easiest way to get it back would be to re-install Mavericks. The correct app for Mavericks is Calendar (version 7.0).
You have also posted your question in the 10.7 Lion area instead of the Mavericks area.
I've requested the Moderator to move your post to the Mavericks area.

  • Photoshop cs5 hangs on launch when loading brushes

Photoshop cs5 hangs on launch when loading brushes.  I have to do a hard reboot and reset the preferences.  In the past 2 days I have had to do this 3 times.  I have the latest drivers.  below is my hardware.  I am also running lightroom.  I did not have this issue until after I installed the latest updates from the adobe website. Does anyone have any information on a fix for this problem  Thank You for your time.
    Nancy Cuppy

    That's interesting...and troublesome.
I did some research on it this morning and found it was happening dell computers (maybe because there are lots of Dells!) and there is no one answer, as there is no common connections.
Have you rebooted again after the f8>last known...step? Does it boot ok? One problem is that check disk did not clear after running and there is a fix for that.
Did your computer come with Win7 installed? If so, I would contact that computer's support and see what they say.
That it started ok in "last known" is apparently unique as I found no reference to that. Normally one goes to Safe Mode and see if it starts ok, and if it does, then steps to clear the restart problem can be implemented.
The fact that no problems showed up at the first check is a good sign.
I hesitate to offer any other solutions as there are several, including actual Registry mods but that I wouldn't do.
Perhaps others here who experienced this as well could jump in.

  • ICal won't launch after 10.5.2 upgrade

my iCal won't launch after 10.5.2 upgrade. it won't even give an "unexpectedly quit" message, it pops up then quits, then nothing. This happened immediately after the upgrade today. I got the leopard disc out and did an archive and install then it worked perfect, no issues, then I did a software update (since I was back to 10.5.0), and installed the 10.5.2 security upgrade, now iCal will not launch, am I the only one with this problem?

I had the exact same problem -- doubled events and could not edit anything. I flushed the cache as describe in some more detail here: http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/2506/iCal-problem-with-Leopard-Upgrade and everything started working just fine.

  • CS3 Contribute hangs on launch.

    Hi,
Our dept. supports several users who use Contribute CS3 on a
daily basis. I've been working with one user who has been having
issues launching Contribute. Upon launch, the splash screen will
show and then hang. On occassion, when he tried to connect to a
site, it will hang. This is an intermittent problem. When it does
hang on launch, the process may or may not be shown in task
manager. When it doesn't, the only option is to reboot the pc.
I have been troubleshooting the issue, but haven't found
anything as of yet. The one thing that I have noticed, is that when
Contribute launches, there is a message on the tool bar that says
"connecting to server". Can anyone out there tell me why it's
connecting to a server and what server that may be on launch? Is it
the server the end user has configured, is it checking for updates
from an Adobe server? etc... I know Contribute is a different beast
than DW, but at least in DW, you have to choose a site to connect
    to first.
Since this happens on launch and also when he tried to
connect to his server, I'm thinking the problem is related. Is
there a way to stop the "connecting to server" on launch, to try
and determine if that is indeed the problem?
Thanks in advance for any advice, thoughts, suggestions, etc

I've found further data on this problem, which may or may not
    be related.
I'm having a recent problem with Adobe Contribute CS3 for the
Mac. It appears that adobe Contribute CS3 will slow down to a crawl
and become unresponsive if it cannot connect to Adobe's servers on
startup. Even if I blow out all the preferences and support files,
"starting fresh" with no connections, this hang occurs.
    Netstat shows:
    Active Internet connections (including servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address (state)

    444M
even after Contribute has been running for several minutes.
It seems that Contribute tries to connect to Adobe, and Adobe
    hangs, and therefore Contribute hangs.
Is anyone else experiencing this or does anyone have any
insight on how to resolve this?
Starting up "offline" is fast, with no problems. This only
    occurs in "online" mode.
    Thanks!

    Hi all-and Happy Holidays.
Just got a new iMac and been trying to use iWeb, but it hangs on launch every time. It gets to loading the templates and I get the beach ball spinning and have to force a quit.
Any clues? Here's my sys. configuration:
    2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    1GB memory
    250GB hard drive1
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory
    Thanks for any help

Quit iWeb, go to Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.iWeb plist file and then relaunch.
If that doesn't do it, repeat the above, do a restart of your Mac and run Disk Utility to repair permissions and try again.

  • MAX hangs on launch

Recently, for no apparent reason (no recent software or hardware install/uninstalls) I found that MAX 3.0 was hanging whenever I tried to access the "Devices and Interfaces". I tried swapping around the test equipment, stripping down to a single instrument, and even swapping GPIB-USB-B units. I found that "Interactive Control" worked fine, but nothing would make MAX work.
I uninstalled all my NI software, rebooted, reinstalled, and now MAX hangs during launch; it doesn't even get to the main interface window.
Are there files or registry keys that may be corrupt? System is Win2K SP4.

    Hi jsproul,
Try downloading the latest NI-488.2 drivers from
    http://digital.ni.com/softlib.nsf/websearch/74B5B3FF1122C90F86256F4F00781783?opendocument&node=132060_US
This version installes version 3.1 of MAX. Be sure to uninstall your current version of NI-488.2 first and that MAX 3.0 is uninstalled.
    Good luck,
