ICal: how can I start from scratch?

I'm having recurring and persistent problems with iCal since I bought a new Mac Pro and migrated my user files from my previous computer (G5, which was also running Leopard).
At first, alarms weren't working. I read several threads here and went through a lot of troubleshooting and finally got that working again.
However, iCal is still very slow and buggy. For example, when I create a new to-do and click on the "due date" checkbox, it takes about 10 seconds for the check to appear. The spinning beachball is a frequent sight, and everything from creating new events to setting due dates and calendars takes five times longer than it used to when I was using iCal in Tiger.
I created a backup of my iCal file, and manually exported my calendars for extra protection. Then I used AppZapper to completely uninstall iCal and all related files, and I used Pacifist and the OS X DVDs to reinstall iCal. Then I imported each calendar individually.
This didn't work. iCal is still so unresponsive it's almost unusable. If there were another alternative out there that worked with my iPhone and other applications that sync with iCal, I'd be using it. But because I depend on those other apps I'm stuck with iCal, and I need to make it work.
Is it possible that one of my calendars is corrupted and causing problems? What else can I do to find out where the problem lies?

Harlan83,
to start from scratch, you’ll need the pair of model-specific grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro. You can purchase a replacement pair of DVDs for your model MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit.

  • SSAUDIT .alg and .atx files are out of synch. How do I start from scratch ?

After upgrading Hyperion Planning from 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.1, the .alg and .atx files that are generated when SS Audit is enabled are now out of synch. How do I start from scratch again ? Stated differently, the row numbers in the .alg file no longer correspond to the .atx rows. How do I "reset" these files so they start again in row 1 ?
I know this must have happned to someone else so I thought a solution could be easily googled and found. I can't find it anywhere.

Stop the application and delete the files. If you want to just keep the changes from the last backup, change in the essbase.cfg SSAudit to SSauditR and then when you do an endArchive it will delete the files and start over

  • How can I start from install disc without shutting down Mac?

Sorry. that last post wasn't so clear. I started the computer without a password, but I think when I was trying to set my own password I may
    have re-activated the old one.
I'm afraid that if I shut it down I won't be able to restart it?- (for starting over from install discs)
    What Have I Done?
This is a hard one. Can anyone help?

Put the disk inside the slot.
    Hit the restart button.
Hold down the c key as your computer is booting.

  • How can I start from a CD if I can't get the CD tray to open?

My PowerMac won't start. I want to insert a bootable CD into it, but I can't get the CD tray to open. Pressing the CD button on the keyboard does nothing.
I remember on the old iMacs with a CD tray, you could push a paper clip into a hole to get the CD tray to open. Is there anything like that on a PowerMac? Or any other tip that I can use so I can open the CD tray?

    Hi, Dunestrider -
    Try this -
Restart or boot, immediately press the Option key and keep it held down. That should bring up Startup Manager, a bright blue screen with icons for available boot volumes.
If the CD drive is empty at this time, press Command-. (Command-periodkey) - this is an instruction to the Mac to open the tray. Then insert your disk and wait a bit for it to spin up and get read.
Old style Startup Manager - then click the circular arrow on the left - this instructs the Mac to rescan buses. Your bootable CD should then appear onscreen. Click it and then click the straight arrow.
    New style Startup Manager -

    - you will probably need to restart after the disk is in, holding down the C key to force a boot using the CD as the boot volume.

  • Confusion...how do I start from scratch with Airport?

    Hi!
I have scoured the boards but am now confused as to what I need to run express using my Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 (purchased last May)? I haven't done anything wireless to date so I am clueless.
I guess I'm confused by the following issues...bear with me:
    1) Since I have "no information" listed under airport card in my about my computer selection, I have figured I need an airport card, am I right? Which one would I need?
    2) Some posts have said that the airport card has to be installed by a certified mac person. I read instructions online and it looks pretty straightforward to me. I am confused about some of the posts saying that self installs can ruin your machine. I have installed cards with my old g3 and survived the process.
    3) My goal is to hear itunes with speakers all around my house. I am assuming that the base station is only necessary should I wish to connect to the internet all over my house. Just to listen to music, I should only need the card and the express station, not the extreme?
It takes me a while to get into the new century's technologies...
    Thanks for any help!

Yep, you need an airport card. A recent card should do.

I installed mine without any problem. I suppose if you haven't done this before, you could do some damage.

Yes, you can use Express for this. How are your speakers setup? If they are connected to your stereo, you'll need to purchase an AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit. Or you can connect directly to powered speakers (using the Stereo Connection Kit). Of course, if you have separate speakers in each room, you'll need multiple setups. This might help explain how it works.

  • Ical how can i restore from time machine

I have tried to no avail, even been to Genius bar today, they did not know how to do it in Lion. Lost all my calendars and events, please help if you can.  Only thing available under retore is the app, which is not what is required it is the data.  No one seems to know how to do it, is there a point to Time Machine, can restore files/docs etc why not data.  Same problem with Address book!

    The data is in ~/Library/Calendars
The folders have gibberish names; you can't tell which folder is which calendar, so you probably need to restore the entire folder.
But if you have your Calendars synched via iCloud, there may not be anything there, since iCloud is where the "real" data resides.

  • How do I start from scratch.

I think My I tunes are corrupt. Now that makes my Iphone corrupt.
My Itunes does not recognize my phone....
    What do I do?

First take your iTunes Music folder located at (Home Folder/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music) and move it to either your desktop or another location on your harddrive.
Next delete the complete iTunes folder located in (Home Folder/Music/) and then empty your trash. You can also uninstall iTunes and reinstall it if you like, this can be done just by also moving the iTunes Application to the trash. Now just download the iTunes installer from Apple and install.
Now once this is completed simply just drag the old iTunes music folder on top of iTunes and all the music will be reimported back into iTunes.
Edit: I forgot to say that if you dont have iTunes automatically storing and keeping your music in the iTunes music folder you will want to Consolidate your music library. You can also do this by going to Advance and then Consolidate Library.

  • Ipod gen 3 - how do I start from scratch?, ipod gen 3 - how do I start from scratch?

Hi, I am wanting to erase and restore my older Ipod 3rd Gen to it's original blank canvas, so that I can put some new music on it for my children to use (seeing as I have been using my iphone for the last year instead). I cannot remember the appleID that was associated with this ipod or any passwords.... What can I do???? I just keep getting an error message about not having enough access priviledges.
Can anyone help me in time to do this for Christmas???
    Thank you.

Hello petag, and welcome to the Apple Support Communities! All you have to do it plug the iPod into a computer with iTunes installed. Then, press cancel anything that pops up. On the left sidebar of iTunes, you will see the name of the iPod. Click that, and then click restore to defaults. Hope this helps!

  • How can I reset/refresh Mail and start from scratch in Lion?

Just completed the upgrade to Lion last night.  On Snow Leopard I had been using Thunderbird as my mail client, but I'm interested in seeing what the upgrades in Mail look like and will do.  Before Thunderbird I did use Mail, so opening the app brought up all my old settings, smart boxes, etc.  I want to start from scratch as though I had never used Mail before - how can I reset it to "zero"?  Can I, or do I need to just manually delete the accounts, folders, boxes, etc. and then re-add them?
Thanks for the help and advice.

  • How to start from scratch?

My G40 2388 is running slow although I have increased the memory. I spoke to a computer sales person who did not try to sell me a new laptop but said that it could help to make backup of all documents etc and then reinstall everything and start from scratch. Anyone has experience with that? Will it help? and how do I go about doing it? For instance how to I go back to the initial config. I do not have CDs because the laptop came with Win XP Pro installed from the manufacturer. I just want more speed and more space so I am open to other suggestions.
    Thanks a lot.

The "funny" thing (I spend most of a day figuring it out but still have figured it out so "funny" is not the right word) is that the G40 recognizes other USB sticks, but also that one USB stick works on other laptops so it seems to be that stick with this mashine that is the issue. I thought it could be the driver but when I try to update the driver it tells me that I have the most recent driver - albeit that it is dated 31 January 2001.
The problem is that I do not see the drive (F) and when I click on E (the USB is partioned) then I see E and F and then I click on F the mashine gives me this message: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on this computer. I have no idea which rstrictions it could be. I am logged in as administrator (only user). I have tried to restart.
I really find it strange. Maybe I should delete the driver and see what happens?
Regarding the restore point: When I look in add / remove programmes, I see several older upgrades of XP and I thought: Maybe if I remove those because I do have the SP3... but maybe that is the same as removing restore points??
TS files. They are in a folder I have made.. New folder2. It must have been a programme I installed, I just don't know which.. Some file names are: VTS_01_1.VOB (this one files is 1G alone..) and there are several of those.. do you have any idea what these files are for?
I hope I can get these problems solved...then I can move on with more productive matters

  • How To "Start From Scratch" and Build a Clean iTunes Library on a Portable USB External Drive?

A while ago I posted about my confused (and confusing) mess of an iTunes:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16183210#16183210
While dozens looked I guess eveyone agreed with me "what a mess" and moved on.
So ... someone at the Apple Store suggested that what I should do is start from scratch. But I'm not sure if I understand all the steps.  He said I should:
    * create a folder of all my songs and just the song files not all the other iTunes stuff -- copy all the mp3 and m4a files that I have in Music > iTunes > iTunes Music > Music to a temp folder let's call it "all my music"
    * launch iTunes and tell it to move to / always look at / whatever the terms my new portable external USB drive
    * click on file / add to library and tell iTunes I want to add that "all my music" folder to iTunes
At this point I don't care if we lose playlists, artwork, play counts and all that stuff.
    Does this approach make sense?
    Is there another way?
So how do I tell iTunes to only look to the external?  How do I get rid of the old stuff I have on the internal that is offering duplicates and phantom entries?  Do I need to delete iTunes and then download a new copy?  Should I delete the iTunes foilder? ...?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks!

    the simplest and working way.
go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced
On there change the iTunes Media Folder location to your external hard drive
Check that the rest of the preference pane looks similar to the following picture.
After doing so, on menu bar go to File -> Library -> Organize Library
This will force iTunes to copy all songs and playlist's to the new place and to build up a new database for the Library.
Empty or corrupted files will left behind on the old location.
After checking that all is on place and working at the new location, you may delete all files at the former location.
    Done
    Cheers - Lupunus

  • I just bought a new Macbook Pro and transferred my iTunes archive of music to it. How do I transfer the playlists from my other computer(s)? iTunes on the new machine wants to start from scratch.

How do I transfer playlists from my other Apple computer(s) to my new Macbook Pro? I think I have successfully moved the music (archive) but the new machine wants to start from scratch on the playlists.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
Essentially you need to copy over the itunes folder
    username/Music/itunes
Over to your macbookpro I suggest using an ethernet cable as it is way quicker. Put it in the same spot on the new Macbook Pro
    username/music/
This should bring over the playlists etc. Then just put the music back in from the archive

Had pse 8 on a Windows 7 PC with a catalog backup on an external drive. Now have a Mac with OS Mavericks. If install pse 12 or Lightroom on the Mac will I be able to use the old catalog backup or must I start from scratch.

If you made a full catalog backup using the organizer's backup command, and you did it to a removable drive, yes, you can restore it to the mac. A backup made on discs will not work, though.
