ICal in Tiger crawls like a snail

Since I have upgraded to Tiger, iCal takes forever to launch and quit (the dreaded spinning beach ball) and it's really very slow while it is running.
I notice upon quitting that it is "syncing" my changes, but with what (Spotlight?), I've no idea. Is there some background syncing occurring upon startup and during operation as well? Is there anyone else having this problem? There have been some other posts about speed, but I couldn't find one that dealt with these issues.
I also know that some have posted (in Panther) that iCals with too much info can be bogged down, but I never had that problem and don't think I have too much info/too many calendars.
If anyone can offer some suggestion or a solution, I would be very grateful.

Hello Shannon.
It´s me again.
And my iCal runs like **** again.
What have I done?
At installation I used "update". But my old System was about three years old.
Today I backed up the good stuff and tried the "erase and install"-Version.
Before that, I made a safety-or backup-copy of iCals Data. Mine says "Sicherungskopie".
And after installation I just told iCal to use the "Sicherungskopie", and now all my data is back.
All Birthdays and Dates. But, when I close iCal, no more waiting time! It just quits like a snap!
Well, I really don´t think this is a solution for everybody, since you can´t restore mail-pop-accounts...
Actually, the whole thing is faster....
And thx Jason for your 2 cents.
Have fun with your machines, folks.

HI, Sorry for my BAD english, I'm Italian. I have an Iphone 4s.. four day ago, I upgraded my IOS from 5.1.1 to 6.1.1 (thinking that 6.1.1 was mature). This is WORST decision I was made. WIFI it's unusable. iPhone it's connected, but doesn't navigate.... or navigate like a SNAIL.
I'm a computer technician and cisco CCNP... after some speedy try, I was able to use WIFI with WEP and not with WPA....
Best result was with an 802.11/B AP  with 128bit WEP (no problem at ALL).......  I think there is a problem IOS - WPA and 802.11G AP...
I hope this can help some user...... for me it's absolutely USELESS info because all my customer uses different AP with different encription so I CAN'T use anymore my phone.... I switch to galaxy sIII until apple resolve this issue.

When I open ical, the calendar looks like an old desk pad vs what is shown in the manual or on-line tutorials.  How do I change the view (i.e. background) not the month/day/week view but the background template?  The default in the manual is good.  Software is current - Lion.

    Kelly,
Try: MacNix: Change Mac OS X 10.7 Lion iCal and Address Book Skins from Leather to Aluminum.

  • Why is my 3g tethering like a snail

why is my tethering through usb so slow(like a snail)

Depending on the 3G network in your area, probably because 3G isn't exactly speedy compared to standard residential Internet speeds.
You probably wouldn't notice much with normal daily usage of the iPhone, but when you try to use that bandwidth for things you're used to having a fast connection for, you'll see right away how slow the cellular data network is.

  • Does iCal has alert feature like in Mac Calendar?

Does iCal has alert feature like in Mac Calendar?
In the Mac Calendar, you can set a alarm for an event to send an e-mail at 15 minutes before event. Is it possible to do same in iPad iCal?

I know it will pop up an alert message, but is it possible to get it to send out an e-mail message instead? If it is possible, could you tell me how to do it in the iPad? I seem to be only able to make it pop out a message but not able to make it sends out an e-mail. Thanks.

  • ICal using Tiger/Panther Help?

    iCal using Tiger/Panther Help?
I’m sure this is a stupid question but I’m trying to import my iCal info from home to work and back. I have Tiger at home and Panther at work, is there a simple way to import and export and update? I’ve tried thought email and had know luck, it comes thought as raw text. I’m sure there a simple way to do this! Thanks Scott F.

    Henry,
Click on your selected calendar, then Click the Info button on the lower right side of the iCal Window, and the window which opens will allow you to change the color in the color window drop down menu which is located in the upper right hand corner of the Info Window.
Just drag them to change the order.

  • Leopard runs like a snail and broken legs

Is this new Leopard supposed to make things faster and easier right? I have problem with this version on a BRAND NEW iMac bought last Saturday and slow. This morning it took my system 5 minutes to boot up. It happened to my older iMac g% which i thought maybe it's older iMac. It's not, it happens to my NEW iMac too.. What is going on? Sometime the system just hang during booting..i have to force and actually unplug the power cord to have it turn off. I install Photoshop Elements 4.0 and also hang and it works like snail, worse than Photoshop CS3. Can i get both my machines back to Tiger without having to completely reinstall?

    Karsten,
Can we assume that the machine specs listed in your (current) profile are those of the machine in question?
If so, things are right on the edge of usability for Leopard. My wife's G4 iBook has a 1.25 GHz processor, and I would consider Leopard's performance there at the lowest end of acceptable. Drop that processor speed to 1 GHz, and I think I would go nuts.
Your machine does have at least one advantage, however. First, it will be using a faster drive, on a faster bus. That helps. Perhaps more important, its RAM can be upgraded beyond the capabilities inherent in the iBook (I think). This will be the area to concentrate your efforts.
An "Erase and Install" might help things, but you really should focus on upgrading the RAM as far as you can. 1.25 GBs of RAM is simply not enough for Leopard! While it might suffice for the OS itself, any applications that you run will be squeezed almost beyond usability, as you have found. If possible, install at least 2 GBs of RAM (probably the maximum for this machine). This will provide enough physical memory for both Leopard and the majority of applications you might run, and it will leave a bit extra for a cache of "Inactive" memory. This category of memory use will greatly speed the launching and response of applications that have already been run since the last start/restart.

  • ICal with Tiger and Leopard

    Hi,
I have a PowerMac G5 running Tiger 10.4.11 and a powerbook pro laptop that runs Leopard. I cannot seem to have iCal work on Tiger: it keeps crashing after a few seconds, after sync starts asking to review conflicts. On the laptop with Leopard, there is no problem. Do you know if this problem can be resolved?
I tried to remove the Library/Application Support/SyncServices directory and redo the syncing but it does not work.
    Thanks for any help,
    marc

I have a problem that may give you the answer, though if it's correct it's not an answer you would like. I don't have iCal on my machine. I reinstalled the OS a few months back and I guess it didn't go with it. There was an installer in library/receipts in a package form, but the installation wouldn't go through. By the way, I'm running 10.4.11. Anyway, I went to Apple's download site and found that the only iCal they had on the site was for 10.3.9 at the latest. There was nothing past that to download. I'm thinking perhaps if you don't have the same iCal you did when you bought Tiger/your new computer, you're running a version that's not supposed to be on that version. Now I just have to find a copy of the program for Tiger. If not on Apple's site (and I tried versiontracker), then I don't really know where. That's really all I can think of.

  • Lion ical - i don't like the template after upgrade lion i want the old one how can i change back the old one

i dont like the new look of ical after upgrading lion.
i cannot see the small month calendar in the right bottom corner.
and i dont like the brown colour on top.
but it seems there is no way to change.
how can i change it back like the look before upgrading lion.

I have no solution, but I agree.  I also want the mini calendar back at the bottom left......

  • ICal for Tiger - Colors etc.

I'm a longtime Mac user and finally caved in and had to upgrade to a new one with Tiger last Summer.
I cannot for the life of me understand if the iCal that came with this is really the only version of this, as it is so sparse, it just seems unlike any other beautiful Mac app....
I am running iCal 2.0.5 With all my searching on the site, I see examples of pre-Tiger iCal and Leopard iCal that all show tons of colors, ways to see events and the current day different from each other on your calendar, yet my version has no such option. The only thing I can do is change my whole calendar to have EVERYTHING be red or black or whatever, which is crazy!
I see one poster here is talking about having so many colors "eye-candy" that it annoys them. What on earth am I missing here????
How does iCal go from version 2.0.5 to 2.5 (Leopard) with no other versions in between?
Please help! This is driving me crazy!!! I used to have Now Up to Date which let me have all sorts of graphics, banners, fonts, etc so I can see what day it is, etc., but that is no longer available for new Macs.
    Help help help!
    Thanks ! LOL!!!!!!

    lilskye,
You can color code calendars by selecting (clicking) the calendar in the source pane. The use the (⌘ + I) keyboard shortcut and you will be presented with a sidebar window that allows you to choose the calendar color in the upper right hand corner...but I suppose you already know that.
In order to display different colors you should split your calendar into categories (separate calendars), such as Home/Work/Holidays. Then drag the appropriate events to the desired calendar

  • Dual 1.8 is running like a snail :(

I was running panther and then installed tiger over top of it and a couple months later it was running really slow so I reformated it totally and it's still running really slow. I check the disk image at it said it was fine and I've run onyx and I have swept my RAM. I dunno what else to do. Any help PLEASE?

If you want a fast system this is what you do:
1: Buy a copy of Mac OS X Tiger, the upgrade version isn't as good. Also buy iLife '06 as it's not included on the Tiger disk.
2: Buy a bootable Firmtek SATA PCI card
3: Buy a 10,000 RPM 150GB 16MB cache Western Digital internal SATA drive.
4: Use present large drives for storage of files or buy whatever.
5: You'll need a 250GB external drive to clone the boot drive later.
A: Backup your files to a file drive, including the iTunes, User/Library/Mail & /Safari folders. Disconnect this drive from the machine and any others.
B: Install the Firmtek PCI card per instructions, you might need a SATA cable to connect the SATA port on the Raptor to the PCI card. The native SATA on the PowerMac can't properly handle the new drives. It might work, but it will give you problems.
Install the Raptor in the bottom slot (screws are near the drivebay) if it's operating temperture (apx 100ºF) is less than your file drive. The heat sensor is near the roof of the drivebay so a hotter drive should go on top.
C: C boot from the Tiger installer disk and select Disk Utility from the menu, Erase W/Zero format HFS+ the Raptor. Come back in a hour or so.
D: Install Tiger on the Raptor, reboot and go through the setup, using your same username as before. Ignore Migration Assistant totally.
E: Get online and Software update to 10.4.7+, install iLife and update.
F: Download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner, Disk Utility Erase w/Zero option the 250GB external drive (hook up via firewire 800 for fastest results)
G: Repair permissions on the Raptor, enable "make bootable" in CCC prefs and clone the Raptor to the external 250GB drive. Don't run or do anything while the cloning process is going, disable all sleeps/screensavers beforehand. When it's done, repair permissions on both drives. Disconnect the clone.
H: Visit your drive makers sites for driver updates before hooking up any older drives. Now install Tiger compatible apps from fresh sources for best security and reliability. You might have to install your former boot drive to cherry pick off a few apps and things you've missed.
I: Once the Raptor is up to snuff, clone it to the external 250GB like before and disconnect.
J: What you want to do is keep your Raptor slim for speed, so keep your space hogging files that can be opened from any drive on a drive that's not the Raptor, place them in new folders, don't mess with your "home" folders.
K: For iTunes, replace the newer iTunes folder with the older one. Rename your Raptor boot drive the same as the older boot drive. This way you match up the pathnames in the iTunes.xml file. (else Find&Replace correct the pathname using TextEdit) Open iTunes and your playlists should be preserved.
L: For Mail and Safari just replace the folders.
M: If everything is peachy, go ahead and clone again. You can hold option to boot off the clone if you ever need to repair/recover /reverse clone you boot drive. So check your clone after your done, to make sure it's solid. you might need it someday.
You should see a remarkable improvement in your computers performance.
If you don't have enough RAM to cover all open apps and files, then get more.
If you don't have a decent video card, I highly suggest getting the X800 from ATI before they are all gone (AGP)

  • How can I import iCal from Tiger directly to Lion?

I am told by Apple tech support that it is not possible. That seems to me very lame. Any workarounds? Do I need really three or more machines with Tiger, Lion and one or more in-between systems to do it?
    Thanks for any help.
If no option is available then I want to leave the feedback that this should really be possible. I should think Apple has accopmlished things much more difficult than this.
    Best wishes,
    George

    Greetings,
If you have the .ics files which contain your calendars from Tiger (Home > Library > Application Support > iCal) you can try importing them into another calendar program / server and then re-exporting them.  This may make them readable by the new iCal.
    Program to try: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/
    Or
    Import them to Gmail:http://support.google.com/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=37118
and then Export them back out: http://support.google.com/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=37111
    Cheers.

  • ICal on Tiger won't start. No crash message.

    Hi all,
I installed Leopard on an unsupported 800Mhz G4 iMac. It worked fine but the airport card wasn't supported, so I decided to revert back to Tiger.
So, I did an erase and install, to give me a brand "new" clean system. After the install I downloaded the software updates.
Then I did a sync, replacing all the data on the computer with the data in .Mac. Everything works fine: mail, address book, bookmarks ... BUT ... iCal now won't start. The icon bounces 3 or 4 times, then it stops without another word. Looking in the console log shows that iCal hits a "white space" or "white page" error (I'm not at my machine ATM)
Anybody got any ideas how to cure this? Can I do a reinstall to repaie iCal?
    Stuart

    Stuart,
.Mac has been suffering maintenance pains since Oct 19, 2007 5:51 AM.
If your problem is related to .Mac sync, and you do not have any other backups, it may be difficult to resolve until .Mac is fully functional.
In the meantime experiment with removing the iCal Plist. This can be accomplished by quitting iCal and dragging the com.apple.iCal.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior. You can delete the iCal plist file on your Desktop.

  • Booting tiger - seems like finder hangs up

    Hi,
I'm working on a PB G4 for a year now. Orginally it waws shipped with Mac OS 10.3. and everything was working great, like I'm used to from apple.
Since I installed Tiger last week, I face the following problem:
Suddenly Finder seems to freeze after booting the PB. Which means the PB starts as usual, passes the Mac OS screen. When the Finder should show the menubars, the dock and everything on my desktop only thing that appears is the spotlight-logo in the upper right corner. If you move the mouse there, good old beachball appears and nothing happens.
I tried a few things: first I booted from the Tiger-Install DVD, using the Disk utility to repair permissions. But this didn't help. So I installed Tiger completely new. After 2 days the problem is there again.
I also tried to boot Tiger holding the shift-button, also no help...
Does anyone have the same problem? or better: a solution to that problem?
    Thanks!
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Matthew,
the first installation I used was "Archive&Install". I wasn't really convinced to use that, ut I talked to a few colleagues and noone faced problems, so I decided to do so. I was suprised that it ran that good. (In the past I had problems using "Archive&Install" from Jaguar to panther for example.)
As the booting problem appeared the first time, I thought "okay, Erase&Install would have been better". So I created an .dmg of the HD, and choosed "erase&install" from the setup-dialogue. After installing, I opened migration assistant to get my applications back from the image-file I put on the server.
This worked well and I imported my mailboxes and everything else.
Then the system ran for nearly two days and the same problem appeared.
I disconnected everything from my powerbook, even the 20" cinema display I'm using as 2nd screen. But that didn't help.
Your hint with Norton seems helpful. Indeed I'm having Norton on my HD... Could you give me a hint how to remove that perhaps in target-mode while I connect my PB with another Mac?
